I use it most days, mostly at work. Generally for coding, sanity checking technical things, or giving me prompts when I’m trying to troubleshoot something. They’re quite good at being a personal sommelier.

What is this being built by Milton Keynes Area?

Yeah but with a dozen worker deaths, forcibly removing people from their homes, and zero regard for environmental damage during construction. We probably have gone too far the other way, but we really don’t want to be building like they do.

Do people actually earn £50-60k, or are they outliers?

Yeah but it’s a 2-3 year contract, and then you likely have to start over, in a new location, with no guarantee of a better salary. And you’re stuck in that cycle until you’re in your mid-late 30s. In my experience, very few postdocs have additional income. There’s no time for it. But maybe it varies by field. Tenure also isn’t a thing in the UK, so I’m not sure why you’re mentioning it.

If you account for part-time workers, tradies not reporting income, and illegal employment (e.g. 10 people sharing an Uber account), those figures will change significantly.

Science doesn’t pay well. £50k is the new £30k. Averages are very misleading, so £50k might sound high but it’s pretty standard for an educated/skilled full time worker.

They don’t suffer from scope creep. The police and ambulance services are increasingly having to fulfil roles that should be provided by social care, while also dealing with the issue that a worse economy (i.e. less budget) means more demand.

Too expensive. During conversion they discovered that no two airframes were the same, with fuselages even varying in length by a few feet. This made it ridiculously expensive as every conversion became bespoke.

This is the correct approach, it’s against the law to open post not addressed to you. Just write “Not at this address - return to sender” on the back and pop it in the letterbox. I’ve done this and eventually the letters stopped.

What is a reality or truth inside your industry that should be more widely known to the rest of us?

Nobody really builds anything from scratch. You build on top of existing public tools, which themselves were built on other public tools, and so on. All of the levels of this need to be kept updated for security/compatibility, so you are continuously dependent on a long chain of tools that are maintained by other people.

Screen protectors aren’t really necessary. They are damaged much more easily than the actual screen, which makes you think they’re offering protection when they aren’t.

I don’t think they’ve become more common, but you might notice them more often because police forces are stretched thin. They sometimes have to use the unmarked cars for response because it’s all they have available.
