Stealth with folding wings seems like a first.

This will win the tender. Boeing won’t get both - it’s always been the way for American aviation. Everyone gets a handout, to keep the industry afloat.

This is such a trope, but have any of you considered that the Navy will literally never accept an inferior aircraft (particularly one inferior to the USAF) out of concern for the industrial base. Doing so is tantamount to putting national security and pilots lives at risk. The Navy wants the best they can get. The industrial base is other people’s problem to deal with.

sofixa11@reddit

Is it actually the Navy that is choosing though? In the past they have been forced to collaborate with the USAF (F-111, F-35), and there are direct Congress passed laws that force them (and the air force) to do things and have specific capabilities, regardless of real need (like the A-10 or having guns for shore bombardment). The people who's problem is the industrial base can very well force the Navy to pick over it.

The F-111 and F-35 were both joint programs to some degree, meaning the decisions were forced to include views of different services and of overarching defense leadership. Just like the Navy (presumably) had no say in the F-47 design or requirements, it is unlikely that the opposite happened either. However it is totally possible for DOD leadership to meddle in Navy decisions. The acquisition system is structured so that for the largest programs the Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs (obviously a joint position) validates the design requirements and a senior leader (often the Deputy Secretary of Defense) is the final approval authority for granting a development or production contract. The Deputy Secretary could consider things like industrial base health that might tip the scales towards one company if the competing designs are essentially tied on the merits. But like another commenter said, the Navy would raise hell if they were forced to go with a subpar design for political or economic reasons. Plus, the losing company would have some ammo for a contract protest.

Boeing's military contract record hasn't exactly been stellar lately either.

This hasn’t been the case since Chrysler's Abrams contract in the 70s.

merlin_34@reddit

Northrop has the B-21 and Sentinel ICBM, which are both enormous programs with many more years of development and production. So they definitely have enough work to stay busy. Hopefully that means this competition will be judged more on the merits of each design rather than concerns about the industrial base. Keep in mind that Lockheed is the prime for BOTH of the only 5th generation fighters the western world has ever built.

Something A-politically approved. The Airforce's F-47 is named Phoenix. Which is kind generic of a name.

With how good modern missiles are, maneuverability doesn't matter. Elevators, canards, rudders, all reduce speed, range, payload and increase signature. Full Dorito is the new meta.
View on Reddit #84029584

peteroh9@reddit

The NGAD has canards.
View on Reddit #84035743

Emperor-Commodus@reddit

We don't know if it does or not. All the renders are just renders, some renders show canards and some don't, and there is some speculation that what appear to be "canards" on some renders are actually fixed leading edge extensions. The Air Force is very vague on whether it has canards or not.  I personally don't think it will have canards, and if it does I think that's pretty silly.

Iran is a LONG way from dumb, they could legitimately have a manned space program if they decided to. The lil q here shows they understand the principles, but don’t have the oodles of cash to make it a reality. Also, fire their marketing department

Depends if President needs funding for different project he wants to pursue. Which is dumb since it's taken decades get designing of the aircraft to where it is now. It would take more decades to get back on track for proper replacement for the F/A-18.

The F-35C is just entering service. Do they foresee the need for a long development period before gen 6 become operational?
View on Reddit #84025528

edgygothteen69@reddit

It will operate alongside F-35C for a while. The Navy will replace the F/A-18s with the F/A-XX, and those super hornets are getting long in the tooth.
View on Reddit #84031372

ThrustTrust@reddit

The 6th gen fighter will be purpose built to operate in a drone heavy battlefield. The 35 can be adapted and is underway already. But the 6th will be designed from the ground up for that mission.

F-47 was the winer for NGAD which replaces the F-22. F/A-XX is for a replacement for the naval Super Hornet.
View on Reddit #84021485

No-Cherry-3959@reddit

Are you thinking of the Air Force’s NGAD? Boeing won that one, but the Navy’s NGAD (F/A-XX) hasn’t had an announced winner yet.

Incredible they are out of the running for both F-47 and F/A-XX. I hope we get a Northrop Grumman plane for the Navy so there are 2 different contractors.
