What's better than one Mustang? Why two, of course!
Begle1@reddit
This has never seemed like something that should've worked as good as it did.
Wolffe_In_The_Dark@reddit
I mean, it's literally the capability of two Mustangs for the weight of slightly less than two Mustangs, which also means flight performance is slightly better than one Mustang.
It's so simple to the point that it feels dumb, but it works. The math maths. Sometimes the efficient choice is also the Kerbal choice.
TheLandOfConfusion@reddit
Okay hear me out… 3 mustangs
He-who-knows-some@reddit
Wing tip to tip to tip as a triangle? Or like the uhhhhhhh misseltoe? That one German project where a JU88 was given the Viking funeral…
Begle1@reddit
How about 4 in a biplane configuration?
johnpmac2@reddit
Box kite mustang
ctesibius@reddit
Or maybe three, with the third fuselage above and between the first two.
Algaean@reddit
Shut up and take my money already
dogandturtle@reddit
Yes
Wolffe_In_The_Dark@reddit
I mean, the only thing stopping you is airframe rigidity, but if you could solve that problem...
Cornishlee@reddit
Add more struts
comfortably_nuumb@reddit
Made of Unobtainium.
Captain_Lolz@reddit
Just use autostrut you newb
Gonun@reddit
Spotted the KSP player
KommandantDex@reddit
Best I can do is 2⅙ Mustangs.
Mythrilfan@reddit
To be fair, that could theoretically be said of any aircraft x2, but there are reasons this hasn't usually been done. 2x B52... I mean okay, that's basically the Stratolaunch Roc, but still.
MajorRocketScience@reddit
Was originally proposed for the space shuttle carrier, only got cancelled when NASA was given two 747s for free
antarcticgecko@reddit
Each half of an F-82 is significantly larger than a typical P-51, and the two types use very few common parts. I was surprised when I found out too.
Present_Sun_9318@reddit
Jebediah?
He-who-knows-some@reddit
Wow! I saw a goofy comparison pic of this and I had no clue they made a radar pod for the F-82, I’ve of course seen the gun pod and pick your poison on ordinance, but I couldn’t figure out the beluga whale pod it was equipped with in the overhead profile.
cbj2112@reddit
P-102 would’ve been a cooler name
Fun-Restaurant-4644@reddit
Two pilots one plane. Sounds like a video i saw a while back on the internets
NSYK@reddit
Looks at A-10…
Guys, I have an idea
CrashingTheApex@reddit
Ai, 3 engines, second fuselage has sensor suite instead of cockpit
YoungMasterWilliam@reddit
Was this ever seriously considered (and thus named), or is it just fan art?
Asking for a friend who wants to track down hi-res poster images.
CrashingTheApex@reddit
Ai art, prompted Gemini nano banana specifically
YoungMasterWilliam@reddit
Thanks
NSYK@reddit
With engine improvements perhaps they could have two higher trust turbines mounted on the inboard side to help with engine out control
Bombadilo_drives@reddit
The second cockpit is absolutely critical. Shooting bro a thumbs-up after a kill is the most important aspect of the platform
Atholthedestroyer@reddit
For twice the hits during a Blue-on-Blue?
MilsYatsFeebTae@reddit
“Why did that guy shoot up all the dirt on either side of our tank?”
DarthBrooks69420@reddit
'Sorry about that. We'll be sure to kill you along with the enemy next time '.
RainierCamino@reddit
US builds tank killer plane
Tank killer plane kills tanks
Allies mad
confused A10 pilot noises
KommandantDex@reddit
"Look, the job description didn't say what side the tanks had to be on."
Captain_Lolz@reddit
Can't do friendly fire if you can't hit shit
bearlysane@reddit
The F-82 solved this by putting all the guns in the center, plus the option of a gun pod with 8 more .50s. So now I’m envisioning it with one (or two? Three?) GPU-5/A pods. (Yes, I know, they were too beastly to actually work properly, but, this can be engineered around.)
Psycle_Panda@reddit
The 1970s just called and they want their idea back. It's actually been proposed a couple of times, resurrecting and upgrading the F-51 as a modern light attack aircraft.
Forte69@reddit
The Yak-110 is the same concept, but with a jet engine added for fun.
KommandantDex@reddit
This is the most Kerbal Space Program shit I've seen all day.
Banjo-Elritze@reddit
Enjoy the takeoff
KommandantDex@reddit
RATO - It's not just for C-130's anymore.
PL_Teiresias@reddit
Fun fact: F-82 and P-51 have almost no parts in common at all. I read one article that said only the tailwheel strut was the same.
johnpmac2@reddit
I always had this idea that it should be able to split in two and then join together again
comfortably_nuumb@reddit
Keanu Reeves voice: Whoa.
HarryTheHatGuy@reddit
They really should have called it the F-102
KommandantDex@reddit
You will NOT steal my Delta Dagger
Abandondero@reddit
North Korean fighter pilots must have lost crucial seconds shaking their heads and blinking because they thought they were going cross-eyed.
flapsmcgee@reddit
Im seeing double! Four Mustangs!
KommandantDex@reddit
"Why are there so many holes in my Twin Mustang?"
"Speed holes, they make the plane go faster."
RLoret@reddit (OP)
Always loved that joke.
Keyrov@reddit
They did squint a lot, that’s for sure
Forte69@reddit
The Yak-110 is similar to this, only there is an underslung jet engine in the middle.
JayGold@reddit
It must feel kind of weird to fly something like this. The offset cockpit means rolling the plane either lifts or lowers you, so you'd feel G-forces usually associated with a climb or dive.
D74248@reddit
They tested the positioning i. a P-38. (HERE)[https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fi.redd.it%2F6r7s2q2euph51.jpg)
The second cockpit went where the turbocharger had been. It did not have flight controls.
dsaysso@reddit
i heard they had issues which is why they stopped production
Algaean@reddit
Not so much problems, more that the Twin Mustang was produced at the dawn of the jet age, and was eventually superseded by more modern jet fighters. It was a perfectly capable aircraft with long range and good performance, just newer stuff came along.
Psycle_Panda@reddit
It had the legs to escort B-29s on intercontinental bombing runs, while early jets lacked the range. It was also useful early in the Korean war, as it could fly from Japanese bases and have decent loiter time over the peninsula before bingo fuel. The first victory of the war was scored by an F-82 over Gimpo.
FrenchMaddy75@reddit
Apparently they were concerned by this problem at the conception and did some test. It was not so problematic!
wattspower@reddit
That’s fascinating. I never thought of that.. a hard role to the right for the guy in the starboard fuselage would feel like a sharp drop
Thalassinoides@reddit
Looks like some sort of twin pod in the clouds.
postmodest@reddit
Is that an antenna in the cockpit? Is the pilot R.F. Burns?
speedyundeadhittite@reddit
Most likely a receiving antenna, the transmitting VHF one is on the other aircraft.
DavidAtWork17@reddit
"You're not flying, I'm flying."
"This is going in my report."
"No, this is going in my report."
Shaun_Jones@reddit
I get the joke, but if I remember correctly they removed the second set of controls from the night fighter version to make room for the radar operator’s station.
devilOG420@reddit
And also led the the p38 no?
speedyundeadhittite@reddit
No.
Dapper-Spot-7825@reddit
The F82 first flew in 1945; we already had the P38 at that point.
Potted_Cactus_is_me@reddit
What?
cloudubious@reddit
Complete with the Long Dong radar.
curbstyles@reddit
Not to be confused with the Apache Dongbow
LarryGSofFrmosa@reddit
If they went this far, they might as well consider integrating toilet onto ejection seats IMO lol
waldo--pepper@reddit
Putting the D/F loop within the canopy was clever.
