Do you notice people getting self centered in older age?

Dramatic-Ad-4607@reddit

Thought i was the only one and it really bothers me because i keep so much to myself because i feel like nobody who im close to wants to hear when i want to talk about my worries and issues but people in my family always talk AT me not with me. Its all about them and how they feel and their story and when i do speak about what i want to talk about its "hmm yeah uh huh oh thats like me with so and so the other day" and goes on to their own topic about their story and issues. Mum is - 57 Uncle - 55 Nan is - 76 Mother in law - 55 also And then these people wonder why me and my husband arent "talkative" or we "keep to ourselves" when its not that at all we just gave up trying and decided we can just rely on one another and other close friends who actually want to listen to us and talk WITH us and not AT us.

Do you track your weight in KG or stones & pound?

UK based people who have opted out of organ donation... why?

Posted by Acrobatic-Bed414@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 709 comments

Dramatic-Ad-4607@reddit

(Also the high moral ground people who are fervent about organ donation place themselves on really irks me, as displayed in this thread). Exactly how i feel. When my grandad lost his sight many years ago me and my mum both begged the Drs to take one of our eyes (we were naïve and just trying to find any solutions) to help him see.. my mum il never forget cried "but i have my dads eyes look its the same colour and everything please take them" but his eyes were completely destroyed and it would not of helped him. I wanted to give my organs all of them my eyes included all of it to stop people from feeling that feeling we felt but my experience with the nhs the past few years and the cold nasty attitude that has come out of it and the stories you see from people who wanted to donate has really put me off. I have not opted out yet as im still very much wanting to help people but can i trust those in the nhs to do this the right way and no leave my family devastated and not lie and say im gone so they get my organs regardless if i put through or not. Il most likely get hate now and attacked and told i shouldnt be allowed a organ if i need it and all that shite but it doesnt do anything but push me further away from wanting to donate. I dont trust the NHS especially right now. If it had of been a good few years back id be happy to do it but now ? i cant trust them.

Is the word "fanny" a slur?

Posted by reuben_ggmu@reddit | AskABrit | View on Reddit | 472 comments

Dramatic-Ad-4607@reddit

People need to stop being a fanny its so silly.. as a woman with one i use this "insult" a lot with friends and family and its never in a negative way. Husband jumps at a spider ? "oh ya fanny" (even though im a hypocrite and im shitting myself in the corner) Aunty complains its too cold despite it being 18 degrees "oh stop being a bloody fanny" So not its truly not a "slur" and i hope we dont start getting even more sensitive to words that are used in banter ways. We are adults we should be able to tell the difference

Right ? I couldn’t believe it either. I don’t expect people to bend over backwards for me but when I’m met with “aww go on stroke them they want you to stroke them” and I say no I get the “oh your weird you hate dogs” like no I did stroke one dog just to be nice and my neck and hands came out in a rash and I was sneezing and my eyes were red. Got asked “oh what happened ? Is that because of the dog ? Oh what are you like”  The way people just expect you to be ok with dogs regardless if you’re allergic or not is annoying. I love animals despite being allergic to many of them but I literally can’t pet them or have them lick me otherwise I’m sneezing and itching all day.

My work allows people to bring their dogs to work. One of them has a big dog and he is snappy. 3 weeks ago i walked into the hall and he was laying down in the path i was going to walk across and as i approached and said "let me pass mate come on" i didnt reach for him or anything he growled and snapped at me. His owner said "he doesnt like if you stand over him or go to pet him" and im like ? im not going to crawl on the floor and i didnt reach to pet him as im allergic to dogs. But despite this our boss does not do anything about it. So every time my co worker brings in his dog now i try to avoid both him and his dog and everyone elses dogs so im not sneezing or covered in rashes. But ive now got to worry about his dog being "snappy" and it puts me on edge at work because hes a big dog. When i bring up about being allergic to dogs or worried about this one dog everyone looks at me like im evil and hate dogs when that simply is not the case.

As someone who’s been mocked for my accent (I’m not even scouser I live over the water no shame just I’m not from the city) I really love and appreciate this comment.  Me Irish grandad used to say about the posh accent “the gobshite sounds like a gobshite with stuffed cotton down his throat and mucus constantly coming out of him”

Sounds similar to me living close to Liverpool with a “Scouse” accent tho Was also told by my R.E teacher (the irony) in a posh school in year 7 that “you will end up on the dole with 3 kids to different men”  Saw him again and shouted over to him “alright Mr Craig do you remember me” he did and looked ashamed .. told him I’d been to uni I’m married to my husband of 16 years now (got married last year) and no children doing very well for ourselves.  He said “oh that’s good I’m glad for you” and excused himself.

Went for a job a few years back in collage as a hotel receptionist. The fella interviewing me sounded very posh and after the interview told me “you have wonderful manners and you are very politely which shocked me” (he said this like it was a funny joke I should of also found funny) “but I can’t take you on as your accent would be off putting when people ring the hotel in the future, I hope you understand” this was for a hotel in Liverpool and despite me not being a scouser (from over the water) and this fella putting out interviews for people in Liverpool were many have scouse accents but didn’t want those accents in his hotel made me do a double take.  Just told him “well best of luck to you” and left. That was when I was 19 I’m 31 now and remember changing my accent depending were I was and who I was around to sound more “posher” as I felt quite self conscious for a while.  Had me sounding like Mrs bucket for years lol

My family is from Sligo so that part especially made me smile in your comment. But yeah you would think they would know that about Liverpool but the ones ive come in contact with either didnt know were pleasantly surprised to learn something new or were complete muppets like the one i mentioned. Got a lot of love for Ireland and the Irish and always will but never once would i claim i am Irish as i was born here in England and grew up around the culture here so i dont feel right claiming i am Irish. Its why its always baffled me that these Americans act this way. When that American mentioned wanting the Irish to pull a October 7th on us i saw that as pure evil because like you'll be wanting people to take out their own family members then as many families here are Irish.. also found it extra funny that they had "anti war" in their bio yet they are cheering and encouraging a make believe war with the English and Irish from the comfort of their home in America. Many Irish people i have met over the years when visiting back home have been nothing but welcoming and kind and a laugh. I think it would blow the minds of many Americans to see that because of whatever weird stories they have been told.

Ive been told by an American i cannot be irish (im half English half Irish never said i was full Irish) because the Irish wouldnt dare bed the english...told them im from Liverpool a very large Irish community city and they then said that is fake information and wished that the Irish would pull an October 7th on us. They are legit very strange and have a very weird fetishization of the Irish. This lady said she was irish because of her great great grandmother.. when i told her were my Irish family is from she said i made up my family XD was a proper baffling conversation

Of course and its not at all anything to do with classism everyone is just sensitive or enables all bad behaviour because everyone who i deemed a chav (usually someone who dresses a certain way speaks a certain way and lives on a council estate they automatically call them a chav) is of course a criminal.

I am a Canadian and I just found out you guys say you alright as a greeting. How do yall differentiate between that and seeing if some ones legitimately alright ?

Is Guy Fawkes night pro or anti Guy Fawkes?

"should the celebration of Guy Fawkes night be reconsidered in the light of current social and cultural mores in the way that Columbus day has been in the U.S., or nah." Big nah. Its really not that deep and serious and id much rather people not come here trying to suggest we change it. Its just a traditional night for families and communities to come together to set off some fireworks and hang around a bonfire eating hot dogs and a jacket potato (by me anyway) and having a good time. Tired of the "current social and cultural mores" being pushed into harmless things that we do just because some people think its problematic when it truly is not.

Why have you not married when in a long term relationship?

Dramatic-Ad-4607@reddit

Been with my now husband for 16 years this may and we got married last year. For us it was just the timing. We were trying to pay our rent and other bills and in the end we realised we didnt need to do a massive fancy wedding and we could do a small one. In the end we were glad we waited so long because we had gone through so many stages of life together and hard times together it was almost like a test to see if we could survive it before we got married and we did well in overcoming some hard times in our life so getting married after that long felt natural and right. Many people mocked me for being engaged for so long and said he wasnt interested in my but they failed to realise my husband was the only one of us working for 9 years while i was out of work and he covered a large if not all of the bills so how could we afford a wedding ? our family helped us out (aunty is a chef so done the food, god mother is a hair dresser so done my hair, uncle is a dj, family friend sells wedding dresses and prom dresses for £120 and my cousin worked in the local pub that had a lovely area for the after party so we had a lot of help) and we finally managed to do it and i now work so everything is going (fingers crossed) well. We also wanted to "hurry up" getting married as my Grandad was slowly passing away from cancer so i wanted him to be here for the wedding (he couldnt come in the end as he was bed bound and passed away 8 days after the wedding) and be a part of it. I dont think it always means a bad thing if you take your time getting married and i hate the idea that your partner doesnt love you enough if they dont rush it.

This is the last one im getting in now regardless but if it doesnt calm down im getting it out sooner. I already have PTSD/Anxiety/ADHD and also MS so i cant afford for this to play with my mental health even more. Its just so strange that ive been ok on them in the past but this one seems way off for me. Wonder if its also my age maybe

31 now but your sister sounds just like me when i was younger. Got called a freak and weird because i would go up to girls and say "can we be friends" and would get ripped apart and battered. Kept trying to make friends but always ended with them not wanting to be around me. I met my now husband when i was 16 and hes been my only friend throughout life as every time ive tried to make friends it seems to never work out. I was diagnosed with PTSD at 13 then anxiety at 21 then at 30 ADHD and they wanted to test me for Autism but i turned it down as i was becoming tired of feeling weighed down like a pin board and feeling further and further away from being "normal". Ive come to accept that il always be on my own apart from my husband but it does still make me sad that il never experience having a group of friends like everyone else. Feels like im just a shadow blending in in the background and theres a wall between me everyone else i can see through it and so can others but im separated from the rest of the people its a weird feeling. In work i tend to try to talk to people but i feel like seen as "slow" and "naïve" and its easier to ignore me so i just read my books like i always do and find a corner on lunch. I hope your sister doesn't experience this and im sorry there isnt much i can offer in advice but it does sound like possible ADHD/Autism to me.

Me booking an appointment for 6:30 tonight due to back pain in the lower area that is making me feel sick and weak and im struggling with stomach issues and taking my husband with me because my drs only seem to take notice when my husband is with me were as when im on my own ive been told since i was 16 these issues im having are either my weight (ive gone from 17 stone 5 to 11 stone 3 now so im no longer over weight) IBS (feels way more worse than IBS) or they say its my mental health making me paranoid and worry.. Im not a mega feminst but when it comes to women's health and being listened to im a massive feminist in this case as far too many times have Drs both women and men dismissed women's health and problems and later its turned out to be something very serious.

Been off work both myself and my husband for a week and a half and we are both due back in on Monday so now im sat here with the sicky nervous sensation in my stomach because im going back to work ( its just a cleaning job and i love it but always struggle going back to work after being off so long) and thinking "I dont feel like i did all the things i wanted to do while i was off and now i only have today and tomorrow to do them" Me and the husband are going to play some UNO after dinner and im going to get back into my reading since im very behind and miss reading my books. Currently having a clear out of old books and selling them on vinted and then going to watch some YouTube while doing my word search. As much as im nervous about work i got my payslip today and seeing the money ive earned (this is my first job in 9 years was off due to mental health and didnt leave my home during that time) does make me want to overcome these nerves and keep working hard for our money. Also had a coffee and now ive got a bubbly stomach so off to the loo i go

Good point i never thought about some countries being unstable.. i still feel shitty that we have these but then i dont like the idea of some groups destroying history and rewriting it in those countries. Its a tricky one. Maybe we could document us giving them back like a catalog and pictures and everything and then make replicas with the dates of when they were given back and if that does happen were an unstable country has people who destroys them then we have the evidence that we once had the originals and that history cannot be rewritten then

It might sound childish but to me i think we wouldn't like it if this was done to us in fact many would be furious about it and also we can make replicas. If those countries take back their artifacts and destroy them or dont care for them the way many think they will then at the end of the day its theirs to do with what they want its not ours. If we have things that were given to us and we have evidence of this then fine keep those but many things were not given to us and should be given back. We have many things in this country we are discovering and digging up that can be placed in a museum and be proud of.
