I saw a B-52 go from level into a nose dive and back to level over the Bay Area. I think it was Blue Angels. Unreal to watch something that size move like that, but it can!

My dad's a deadhead and he likes the Eagles. But he has a keen appreciation for why other deadheads would have such a strong opinion to the contrary. He knows almost nothing about the movie, but he just told me my aunt was represented by Bill Kunstler when she got arrested for occupying administration buildings. I also like the Eagles, but I am a member of the square community.

Interesting. I picked up on the fact that I like their country, even though I hate country, and I like rock, so I like their rock. But I do hate pop pretty passionately. And that’s the stuff I like best from the Eagles. I Can’t Tell You Why, Witchy Woman, One of These Nights… One of the best bands of all time. Maybe second best after the Beatles.

Is there really nothing in the movie about this? My dad is a deadhead. I asked him once about why the Dude wouldn’t like the Eagles, and that’s the explanation he provided. My dad is also from Southern California and was born within a few weeks of the real life “Dude” (Coen Bros friend) and Jeff Bridges (who are both from SoCal as well). His sister was one of the “Davis 8” who got arrested for occupying administrative buildings owned by the UC system. The copycat sit-ins around Apartheid, not the original sit-ins about ‘Nam. He’s not a particularly big fan of the movie, but it may have been playing at the time—or I may have inferred it all this time and included that fact when presenting him with the question.

He hates them because he’s a Deadhead. The Eagles are the antithesis of the Grateful Dead. The Dead were into improvisation and experimentation, whereas the Eagles would play the studio version of their songs at live concerts. Buncha squares is more like it.
