Why Does El Duderino Hate The Eagles?
Posted by ExtraYogurt3208@reddit | lebowski | View on Reddit | 292 comments
Is he upset with early members being replaced and considered them a “compromised second draft”, or we just don’t know?
Kylestache@reddit
Well Dude we just don’t know.
The real answer is The Eagles over time became a very commercialized, corporate status quo band. The Dude is anti-establishment, and The Eagles are the music of the establishment.
That’s why he prefers Creedence (I wouldn’t hold out much hope for the tape deck though). Everyone nowadays knows CCR as the music of the Vietnam War, but that’s because the band was anti-establishment and sang about the repressed frustrations of many Americans at how the war was going and how it was run by the elite while the common man was sent off to die.
Those rich fucks. This whole fucking thing. I did not watch my buddies die face down in the muck so that this fucking strumpet…
IKnowPhysics@reddit
Even the manager of the Rolling Stones hates the fucking Eagles. From Rolling Stone on T Bone Burnettt gathering the rights for the songs in the Lebowski soundtrack:
"A tougher get was Townes Van Zandt‘s cover of the Rolling Stones’ “Dead Flowers,” which plays over Lebowski‘s closing credits. “[Former Stones manager] Allen Klein owns the rights to it,” Burnett says. “He wanted $150,000.” Burnett begged Klein to just come down and watch an early cut of Lebowski. “It got to the part where the Dude says, ‘I hate the fuckin’ Eagles, man!’ Klein stands up and says, ‘That’s it, you can have the song!’ That was beautiful.” For the record, Burnett agrees with the Dude (“[The Eagles] sort of single-handedly destroyed that whole scene that was brewing back then,” he says), but the line infuriated Glenn Frey."

Yeah, well…that’s just your opinion man

Townes Van Zandt rules! I think he’s possibly the most underrated country artist of all time. He’s not nearly as popular as he deserved. Go listen to Mr. Mudd and Mr. Gold and Waitin’ Around to Die.

If you like Townes Van Zandt, there's probably room in your heart for Billy Joe Shaver, too.

Funny thing is, as a Louisianan, I consider CCR just as much a sham as later Eagles. CCR is from California, and the whole "born on the bayou" thing was a sound they borrowed when they couldn't find success in their original format.

Kylestache@reddit
Yeah CCR and their rights holders have always been very cool with the music being used in Vietnam films because more often than not movies set in Vietnam are about how awful it is to be there, so over time they became the soundtrack of the war more or less.
Aggravating_Bat3618@reddit
Saul Zaentz still wouldn’t let them put the songs on the soundtrack.

The man in the black pajamas is a worthy fucking adversary, dude. What did the Eagles have? 'Take it Easy'? 'Hotel California'?

TheReadMenace@reddit
Yeah Eagles took the Laurel Canyon sound (Joni Mitchell, The Byrds, CSNY, etc.) and got rid of any edginess. They were a pure corporate rock band made up of carpetbagger studio guys. The Dude would have surely taken offense to this since he would have been in that scene in the 60s.

CmdrRikerBones@reddit
When Jesus is first introduced, the song played is "Hotel California" by the Gypsy Kings. This is diegetic, meaning the song comes from a place where the characters hear. Jesus listens to The Eagles music, and Jesus is The Dude's enemy. So, my head cannon is because Jesus "can roll", The Dude gets intimated/anxious when he hears The Eagles.
dtuba555@reddit
Is it diegetic, though?
labirdy7@reddit
Well dude we just don’t know. but probably not—a bowling alley no matter how cool is not playing the gipsy kings cover of hotel california.
CmdrRikerBones@reddit
when the Gypsy Kings are playing, Jesus Rolls a strike. At the next downbeat, he pauses, and then dances in rhythm to the music. The camera pans over to The Dude/Walter, and the music ducks while they discuss how Jesus can roll. I suppose the diegesis can be open to interpretation.

the Eagles single-handedly destroyed the 1960s scene. they took a rebellious, organic counterculture and turned it into a highly manufactured product. the Eagles stripped the socio-political drive from 1960s hippie culture, replacing it with prioritized radio airplay over message. a transition from the intimate, communal Laurel Canyon folk scene to a corporate, profit-driven industry. It's just "Eagles". Not "The Eagles" or "Los Eaglerinos" or "Their Eaglenesses." The band is adamant about that. Also their music, which is milquetoast, makes all of them, despite their status as professional musicians, look like a bunch of fucking amateurs.
CaptianBrasiliano@reddit
The Eagles were the lamest thing in your Boomer parents music collection. They were jocks/rich kids who realized that the counter culture had the drugs and women who might actually put out so they got good enough at music to get an in to that. They were scenesters.
Particular-Village91@reddit
We’re not talking about the guys who built the railroads here, but this is not accurate. The band that would become the Eagles was Linda Ronstadt’s backup band; the individual band members were, each in their own right, objectively fantastic session musicians.
And say what you will about the tenets of my Boomer father’s vinyl collection, at least it’s an ethos.
strange_reveries@reddit
All true facts, but also they were very slick, safe, commercial, dare I say bland soft rock ultimately, no matter how much twang they put on it. And I say this as a fan of some of their songs! It doesn't surprise me an OG '60s hellraiser like the Dude would feel how he did about them.

LawrenceSellers@reddit
I literally asked Gemini this question yesterday:
Why does The Dude hate the fucking Eagles?
In The Big Lebowski, The Dude’s legendary hatred for the Eagles isn't just a random joke—it’s a carefully crafted character detail that highlights the cultural divide between the 1960s counterculture and the 1970s "Me Decade."
Here is why the "Duderino" can't stand them:
1. Cultural Identity (Hippies vs. "Rich Hippies")
The Dude is a relic of the 1960s—a former member of the "Seattle Seven" and a draft dodger who values authenticity and gritty, anti-establishment vibes (represented by his love for Creedence Clearwater Revival).
• The Gritty: Creedence felt like swampy, blue-collar rock.
• The Slick: To the Dude, the Eagles represented the "corporatization" of the hippie movement. They were seen as a highly polished, commercially successful "soft rock" machine that took the edge off the counterculture and turned it into a smooth, radio-friendly product.
2. The "Lazy" Vibe
In the famous taxi scene, the song playing is "Peaceful Easy Feeling." For a guy like the Dude, who is currently being harassed by nihilists, a corrupt police chief, and a millionaire namesake, the song's breezy, "everything is fine" California sentiment feels patronizing.
3. Behind the Scenes: T-Bone Burnett
The film’s music consultant, T-Bone Burnett, actually hated the Eagles in real life. He was the one who suggested the line to the Coen Brothers. Burnett famously remarked that the Eagles "single-handedly destroyed that whole scene that was brewing back then," referring to the more authentic country-rock movement of the early '70s.
4. The "Hotel California" Irony
The movie features a Spanish flamenco cover of "Hotel California" by the Gipsy Kings during the introduction of Jesus Quintana. This serves as a final insult: the only time we hear an Eagles song in a "cool" or stylized way, it’s a cover performed by a rival, effectively stripping the original band of their own work within the Dude's world.
Fun Fact: The line actually helped the production budget. The Coen Brothers wanted to use a Rolling Stones song ("Dead Flowers") for the credits, but the rights owner, Allen Klein, wanted $150,000. When Klein saw a rough cut of the movie and heard the Dude say, "I hate the fucking Eagles, man!" he reportedly stood up and said, "That’s it, you can have the song!" just because he hated the Eagles, too.

He’s got the whole Cowboys thing goin’.
Bootsy_Frost@reddit
Cause they are overplayed and overrated.
Sweet_Shoulder6678@reddit
I thought the reason the dude hated the eagles was because the conan brothers wanted to use a song and got turned down
So they put that in as a rub against the eagles.
When ccr was asked if they could use music they were happy to give rights.
Mr-Dobolina@reddit
* Licensing an Eagles song, performed by The Eagles, would have been prohibitively expensive. The Gypsy Kings cover of “Hotel California” would have been a lot cheaper. As a songwriter with an ownership stake in his publishing, Don Henley could have prevented them from using the song, regardless of who was performing it.
* CCR famously didn’t control their publishing or masters at the time, so had no say in whether their music was or wasn’t used in anything.
* The Eagles made bath rock for those rich fucks to play for their strumpet wives. CCR, on the other hand, were the real deal.
* The Eagles ate the bar. The bar ate CCR.
Electronic_Set_2087@reddit
That feels really typical of the era. We kind of all hated them when they were full of drama. 🤣

Pleasant_Job_7683@reddit
Bcuz man theyre the Eagles, man
PieThat7304@reddit
The duality of man is a major theme in this movie and I always thought this was deliberately inserted as a joke.
Both groups were Californian, popular, influenced by the Bakersfield sound—basically catchy country rock. So it’s funny that Duder hates one and not the other.
Johnsendall@reddit
It’s also that the band really does suck.
