Aside from paying off your mortgage what would you do with £70,000?

Posted by iffyClyro@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 413 comments

CwrwCymru@reddit

Situation dependent but rule of thumb I'd use 10% to enjoy myself and then S&S ISA/Pension/Mortgage overpayment the rest. If you have any shorter term but "positive" spending that needs doing then I'd consider that too - house deposit, renovations etc.

It's seen as the dressing gown of the coat world. It also isn't helped that they gained popularity by people virtue signalling that they're outdoors people. Which tends to annoy people who are actual outdoors people. Don't overthink it. It's not a big deal and it's just pedantic gatekeeping at its core. Just be aware people see them as a bit "scruffy".

I've also owned 2 MX5's but if you get into a lotus then you notice the difference immediately. Caterham too but I feel this is a bit of an unfair comparison. This is why coilovers and a bit of boost is popular in the Miata community. Some people enjoy just a bit more of an aggressive setup.

Would you retire on £400 a week if you had no bills except utilities?

Posted by RS_Phil@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 551 comments

CwrwCymru@reddit

Sounds daft at first glance but if you're physically incapbable as you age then it needs to be a consideration in your retirement budget. £80 is a lot for grass (robomower) but then also consider wider gardening, cleaners, care, handyman jobs. Being old can be expensive in certain ways (and cheaper in others).

South Wales Police do particular days in the city centre where they confiscate and prosecute e-scooters and illegal e-bikes. I'm sure other forces will do similar. It certainly happens. 6 points, a fine and having your scooter destroyed iirc.

That's not true. Anywhere that the public is available to access is deemed a public place in law. From a legal perspective you are free to film in a shop, however they are able to ask you to leave and ban you. If you don't then it becomes aggravated trespass and is a now criminal matter. People shouldn't go around filming in shops but it's not a crime.

Is that weird to block my driveway like this?

Posted by MeijiSB@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 528 comments

CwrwCymru@reddit

He can't, it's a dropped kerb. You can report this to the council. Repeated reports might actually prompt a response from them. If he ever completely blocks you in, then it's a police matter. Highways Act 1980 prevents people unlawfully blocking access to a highway. You'll probably have more luck with the police than the council.

If you're analytically minded, have you considered accountancy? You can jump into a chartered training role with A levels, get qualified within 3-4 years (ACA/ACCA/CIMA) and then consider a top up MSc (cheap, remote, easy) if you wanted that graduate tick box (completely optional once chartered). You could be on a solid wage quite quickly and be in a good position by 30. The trade off is committing those years to the exams.

Posted by Fancy-Diesel@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 1136 comments

CwrwCymru@reddit

There are different classes of induction hobs. The cheap ones are a pain to use as they don't heat consistently or particularly evenly. The expensive induction hobs are fantastic though, the difference in consistency is night and day. It's one of those "you get what you pay for" things but don't discount induction if you've not used the nicer models.

Do drivers in the UK put snow tyres on their car?

Posted by pickindim_kmet@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 60 comments

No, no real need in the majority of the UK. Most drivers use summer tyres all year round, although now all-season tyres are actually performing pretty well they'll likely become more common. Decent all-seasons would likely be the best tyres for the UK on most cars.

Do you get roadside police checks in the UK?

I've only seen it around Christmas time when they have drink driving campaigns. Essentially they set themselves up in the village car park and flagged the occasional car down for a roadside breath test in the morning. Outside of that you have to be doing something obviously wrong, or have a police marker on your car to be pulled over by the police.

What about not setting complicated policies on Reddit that can be poked at but understanding that many addictions cause unnecessary pressure on public services that are often subsidised by others. It's unhelpful to ignore the negative impacts on a public system because it makes people feel uncomfortable. It's then up to people smarter than I to draw the line as to what to support.
