Is there a fire risk from buying an e-scooter and charging it at home/work?

Folding ebikes are far too expensive. 2.8 miles of mostly flat is a pretty easy commute for a normal bike. It's a bigger risk with the cheaper end of stuff that doesn't meet UK safety standards. I'm guessing anything you buy from Currys probably will meet UK standards (assuming they haven't done the "marketplace" thing like some other retailers and you're not buying it from some other random party via their website). LiFePo4 batteries are safer but heavier and more expensive so probably wouldn't be used in a scooter. For safety I would avoid charging a big battery while I was sleeping, and would consider charging it in an outbuilding/etc if possible.
