What’s a modern habit that everyone has normalised that future generations will look back on negatively?

tell me, for example smoking used to be so normalised and had no negativity
Layeredrugs@reddit
Vaping.
Grouchy_Location9756@reddit (OP)
true, i think were starting to wake up to the consequences however but a lot of kids struggle with it
Funny-Strawberry1351@reddit
i mean yeah, nicotine dependency is tough to deal with. but hardly life ruining.
Remote-Ad5853@reddit
Don’t agree, it will never be anywhere near as harmful as smoking, it’s no secret of what the harms of cigarettes are and how they derive from combustion and particular chemicals.
Because it’s less harmful than smoking, it will be viewed through the lens of having a huge impact on reducing the number of smokers
Kapika96@reddit
Vaping.
It should've been treated the same as smoking from the very beginning!
Kimbob1234@reddit
All of the cigarettes, vapes and those pouches they sell should go. Awful things.
TheBeAll@reddit
No way. The problem with smoking was second hand smoke, vaping doesn’t have that.
iceblnklck@reddit
Yeah but you can’t deny that people vape way more than they ever smoked so it’s not exactly the epitome of health itself. They’re as bad as each other.
Funny-Strawberry1351@reddit
they’re not though. please educate yourself on a topic before you spread commonly incredibly easy to debunk misinformation.
iceblnklck@reddit
‘Commonly incredibly easy to debunk’ - vaping is not good for you at all.
TheBeAll@reddit
Smoking coats your lungs with tar, I’m not going to say vaping is health effects free but it’s a lot better than that.
iceblnklck@reddit
Yeah and vaping causes popcorn lung. It’s not something that you can say ‘oh that’s better’.
TheBeAll@reddit
Can. Pretty much everyone who smokes will die of it
iceblnklck@reddit
So you’re advocating for vaping? I went cold turkey 8 months ago and I’m telling you that they’re as bad as each other. Just because there’s more data on smoking doesn’t mean vaping is some health alternative. Get a grip.
LeTreacs2@reddit
I stopped nicotine 6 years ago and vaping and nicotine gum was absolutely essential for me to stop smoking.
Don’t fall into the trap of thinking your experience is universal, because it isn’t.
iceblnklck@reddit
Not saying everyone has to go cold turkey. Do you need a stepladder for that reach, petal? Your experience is also no universal.
LeTreacs2@reddit
It was an example of how our experiences differed to highlight the point that your statement of “they’re just as bad as each other” isn’t right. I used this example because you used your personal experience as a qualification to back up your opinion as right, when in fact, it isn’t.
It’s not a reach if you understand how to read petal
I know my experience is not universal… that’s why I made the point…
TheBeAll@reddit
Im advocating for people being able to do what they want. Your anecdotal experience is worthless. All we are is an island that bans everything that people don’t like. Next you’ll ban smells from restaurants, or ban dogs for barking too loud, or ban the sun for being too bright in the sky. Get a grip and just let people do what they want.
iceblnklck@reddit
Nowhere did I say ban, princess. I’m saying that neither is good. Your opinion is hyperbolic and worthless if you aren’t going to respond in good faith.
Remote-Ad5853@reddit
No it doesn’t, not high street e liquid products made legally. The big Popcorn lung scare in the USA was been found in people who used illicit THC vapes with the presence of some sort of vitamin e. There was another flavouring causing a scare but this has already been banned here for some time. It wasn’t a novel or new risk.
So you can absolutely look at legally produced e liquids and be confident it is safer than coating your lungs in tar
iceblnklck@reddit
Safer is not the same as healthy. There’s also been popcorn lung in the UK, but that doesn’t fit your love for a vape I guess.
McKendrigo@reddit
"you can’t deny that people vape way more than they ever smoked"
You can, because it's not true.
Back in the 1950s in the UK about half the adult population smoked, and the percentage was even higher in men.
iceblnklck@reddit
People vape more often than they smoked. Because it’s easier to get away with using it a lot more than lighting a cig. Mentioning the 50’s was absolutely irrelevant to what I actually said.
McKendrigo@reddit
You appear to be claiming that people vape more than they used to smoke. I pointed out that, no, categorically not true because people used to smoke at a much higher rate in the past than vape today.
Facts aren't irrelevant just because they don't back you up, mate.
iceblnklck@reddit
You still aren’t understanding what I’m saying. People that go from smoking to vaping will often vape more than they smoke. Because they can vape much more freely than they smoked. No bloody mention of how people smoked seventy years ago.
This is not a hard concept to understand.
McKendrigo@reddit
"You still aren’t understanding what I’m saying."
Because you're struggling to articulate what you mean by "people".
It took you, what, 3 or 4 attempts before you made it clear what you meant by "people" (people today versus people in the past? People who switch from smoking to vaping? People who smoke compared to those who vape?).
Don't fudge what you're trying to say and then blame other people for not understanding your word salad.
iceblnklck@reddit
I’m not struggling, I made it very clear to you again on the second comment. It isn’t my fault that your comprehension is shit.
Remote-Ad5853@reddit
You’re implying this is a big health issue. It’s not necessarily. The concern with nicotine has never been how much nicotine a person consumes but entirely the health effects from inhaling a cigarette.
Nicotine isn’t a particularly harmful drug to be addicted to or consume. What makes you think this is a big worry?
iceblnklck@reddit
I’m saying that one isn’t better than the other. Are you okay?
Kaapstad2018@reddit
For real ? I’d say second hand vape is worse. I’m constantly walking through thick cherry flavoured clouds of smoke
TheBeAll@reddit
Second hand smoke gives you lung cancer. Second hand vape is like an air freshener.
Glozboy@reddit
Vaoing will be found to be cancerous. Guaranteed
Funny-Strawberry1351@reddit
nicotine has been wildly researched for decades, it’s not harmless obviously, but it is one of the least harmful substances in cigarettes.
nicotine has been used safely in the uk since at least the 1980s.
TheBeAll@reddit
Lmao, according to literally 0 scientific literature over the past 20 years.
McKendrigo@reddit
I despise vaping, but there's no chance that first or second hand vape is worse for your health than tobacco smoke.
The biggest health concern from vaping, IMO, are people getting needlessly hooked on nicotine. There are reports of school kids and young people being so chronically addicted it affects things like their studies.
Funny-Strawberry1351@reddit
it isn’t. nicotine is one of the least harmful things in a cigarette and isn’t the thing that causes cancer or any of the problems that come with smoking. like the tar, carbon monoxide, the many carcinogens.
vaping obviously isn’t harmless, but it’s insane how this Reddit thread is trying to put vaping and smoking anywhere near the same threshold of danger for your body. nicotine is incredibly addictive though.
mrhippoj@reddit
People who are around people who vape are still inhaling the fumes, otherwise they wouldn't be able to smell it. There's not enough long term data yet to assess how dangerous second hand vaping is.
TheBeAll@reddit
It’s water vapour. Second hand vape isn’t a thing.
Vaping has been a thing for 20 years now. That’s plenty of data.
mrhippoj@reddit
Water vapour with all the same toxins that go into your lungs. If it was just water vapour no-one would do it. And 20 years isn't a lifetime. I suspect vaping isn't that bad but people acting like it's proven completely safe over the course of a 70+ year lifespan are lying to themselves
TheBeAll@reddit
You’re a fool if you’re comparing all the tar and poison in cigarettes to just the nicotine in vape.
20 years is plenty of time for a scientific analysis of the effects of vaping. Your suspicions aren’t grounded in scientific fact.
mrhippoj@reddit
You are not even bothering to understand what I'm saying. I literally said that I suspect it's not that bad. I'm just saying that to claim it's harmless and just water vapour is dumb, which it is, and you are.
But okay, 20 years is plenty of time, let's take a look at the studies then
All of which support what I've been saying - not as bad as cigarettes but definitely not harmless.
Just because you like vaping, doesn't make it magically fine.
kipperfish@reddit
But it's not just water that's being vaporised.
I'm on the side of "vaping is better than smoking. But neither is better"
I'm a smoker currently trying to quit. Without vapes. Because the last time I tried with vapes, my nicotine craving skyrocketed because there was no "limit" on vaping. A cigarette ends and you go back inside, a vape you just stand there and keep puffing away.
mrhippoj@reddit
This was exactly my experience. You can vape indoors and it's nicer than smoking, which meant I did it constantly where I'd only smoke one every couple of hours
Kapika96@reddit
Nope. If that were true they could've just banned smoking in public places, or around others. No need for the taxes, health warnings, and phasing out.
It was a problem, not the problem. The addiction and health concerns were definitely problems too, and apply to vaping as well.
TheBeAll@reddit
We should actually let people do what they want. If someone wants to drink themselves to an early grave we should let them, as long as it doesn’t harm anyone else. With smoking it does.
Taxes and health warnings is just a way for the government to save money. Vaping doesn’t lead to nearly as much money spent in the NHS on treatments so it’s not as bad for the government either.
Kapika96@reddit
I don't disagree that people should be allowed to do what they want.
But advertising vaping should've been illegal from day 1 and it never should've been allowed in buildings, trains, etc., it's still a disgusting habit. So like I said, it should've been treated the same as smoking.
TheBeAll@reddit
It’s water vapour.
Funny-Strawberry1351@reddit
why should it be treated the same as smoking? it’s no where near as harmful or dangerous.
treating vapes like cigarettes will only put smokers off from quitting smoking.
Remote-Ad5853@reddit
Not at all, it’ll be viewed for its smoking cessation abilities and they will recognise its involvement in plummeting the number of smokers
LeTreacs2@reddit
I smoked for 14 years, vaped for 4, and now I’m nicotine free for 6 years.
I can say with confidence that without those 4 years of vaping that I’d still be smoking today.
Thin_Pin2863@reddit
1000%.
It's useful for people stopping smoking, I think we all agree about that, but the sheet volume of people who are constantly vaping but would otherwise never have engaged with nicotine products is a national shame.
Remote-Ad5853@reddit
That isn’t actually straightforward to measure tho! There’s plenty of people who vape who’ve never smoked, but we can’t know if they have been “diverted” from smoking or are people who never would’ve smoked in a vape free world
mka_@reddit
But in fairness if vaping hadn't been normalised, I think we'd still see kids smoking. It's two sides of the same coin.
RudeHelicopter4662@reddit
I expect people will still be finding ways to get mildly high even though it damages them in some way.
Vaping and cigarettes will be viewed in the same way we see the Victorians widespread use of opioids (e.g. to keep children quiet), but future generations will have their own bad habit.
I’d put gummies on the list. As someone who had difficulties with cannabis in my teenage years, I’m shocked every time I see a gummie advert from respected YouTubers.

Birth control pills
Wise-Pay-8993@reddit
People are downvoting yet its known to have so many negative effects on women
Picnata@reddit
What negative effects? I am genuinely curious
Wise-Pay-8993@reddit
hormonal contraceptives are linked to increased risks of depression, anxiety, blood clots, libido loss, nutrient depletion, and other documented side effects in medical literature. It's a serious public health discussion.
itsfourinthemornin@reddit
So to note, I already struggled with depression, anxiety and other mental health and physical health problems, however using hormonal contraceptives sent me over the edge especially with the former two and other diagnosis's later down the line and looking back now, I should've been offered non-hormonal or other options (still should be, but that's another fight). Took me ages to balance out to 'normal' (for me) after stopping all forms of contraception in the end. Few people realise the havoc they can and do cause for many women.
Wise-Pay-8993@reddit
Your the only one here who gets its so many downvotes on my comment but so many men fail to realize how many problems it causes women.
itsfourinthemornin@reddit
Quite silly it's being downvoted, though I try not to make sense of this sub's downvoting anymore. Most cases I put it down to emotional react than logical, like reading further down about "anti birth control". You can point out flaws in things without being fully against them. Things can have both pros and cons.
While they have their benefits such as the obvious reducing the "risk" of pregnancy, other uses for medical treatment especially women's health and more they have just as many side effects and negative effects for people too. They just don't "agree" with me, my health is much more important!
Any birth control I've been given a prescription for on the spot, details to go get them there and then or booked an appointment instantly and few questions asked. I've repeatedly had to turn them down for a few years from my GP now, even with explaining and having a file in front of them. Yet for non-hormonal BC I had to fight to get, still had problems sadly. Now I'm having to fight for sterilisation - not only because I don't want more children but for my general health - which I've asked for multiple times over years!
Other-Power4321@reddit
Agreed, I’ve told my wife I’d rather just get the snip than her go back on them now we’ve had our children

IansGotNothingLeft@reddit
Birth control pills are not for me, but they are used as a medical remedy for many people. Their use outside of contraception can be life changing.
Most medications come with long-term risks. And there's a benefit Vs risk type assessment for everything. For most people, birth control is safe, like other medications.
Do I think that the onus shouldn't always be on women to take precautions? Yes. But I'm in no way anti birth control pill.

GeordieAl@reddit
It really is getting terrible these days. Back in the 90's it felt like there was a real positive change happening, people coming together, walls coming down, and just a general positivity. But for the past 10 years the level of hatred, anger, and division just seems to be accelerating.
Diem-Perdidi@reddit
I do feel the same way, and I don't know how old you are, but I was a kid in the '90s, and I have to at least acknowledge the possibility that the reason I feel like they were an optimistic and positive time is because I was a kid then, and as an adult looking back on a (decent, normal) childhood, all one can remember is the optimistic and positive feeling that the whole world was out there waiting to be explored. One doesn't remember the shit one's parents were presumably worrying about, at least if they were doing their level best to insulate one from it, as was their duty.
CoffeeIgnoramus@reddit
It's always when economies struggle and people look for a culprit, but the culprit has to be different from them because people can't face their own flaws, so finding someone who doesn't match them feels like an easy fit for the role.
And then you get "leaders" who lean into that fear and confirm the bias. The difficulty is pulling people back out of that fear spiral they are in.
HideousTits@reddit
Not to be a Debbie downer, but this is how humans have always behaved. At every point of human history and all over the world. It’s not something which will change.
CoffeeIgnoramus@reddit
Although I agree, I would also add that the levels change drastically. Anyone who was adult in the early 2000s saw a UK that was drastically better at understanding and welcoming each other. Much more peaceful. It took a certain person to start sowing distrust and they are now capitalising on the crops they sowed.
HideousTits@reddit
Not to be a dickhead, but referring to your own lifespan experience in one part of the world when I referred to all of human history kinda misses the mark.

poptimist185@reddit
This will probably come about through environmental necessity rather than morality, because at the moment it’s definitely not a linear progression. Meat-eating rates have actually *risen* in the last few years, and many vegan substitute companies that were seen as the next huge thing have gone bust
Sasspishus@reddit
I agree, most likely due to climate change and the impacts that eating meat has on the planet

obsession with the past, sometimes fake nostalgia. Especially from people who never even lived it
In some ways, it's understandable. Those born after 2002 have never lived through a period of economic prosperity or have ever tasted any kind of mild optimism and hope. They live through austerity, decaying urban landscapes, crumbling infrastructure, and stagnating wages all their lives.
But in other ways, I find it a little strange when teenagers are convinced that cars absoloutly peaked in the 1990s and early 2000s, despite never owning a car. Because some boomer made some real about an 80s or 90s Mercedes with Cherry Cherry Lady playing in the background.
There seems to be this gen-Z obsession with 90s, 2000s-era JDM cars. Which is funny because during that period, everywhere from car programs and magazines, lengthy online forums were full of heated discourse about the sh*t state of the present automotive industries. How all cars looked the same with their jellybean design. How reliability, plain functionality, is pedestrian and boring. How interior, peppered with buttons, looked ugly. worotan@reddit
Everyone’s avoiding mentioning us living unsustainable lifestyles that fund the politicians and corporations who see everything as just short-term profit, because anyone trying to regulate seriously is hounded out so they don’t prevent us having fun things.
Climate science predicted the rise of populist politicians who would taken advantage of the unrest by closing borders to refugees and starting wars for resources.
We’ve got that now. The other predictions keep getting worse.
The amount of energy plant food provides drops noticeably as co2 levels rise the amount we’re forcing them, for example. A warmer, wetter world is more suitable for viruses and bacteria than mammals.
So if we want serious politics, we need to be sending the message through our purchasing that we don’t want to be on a ride run by salesmen who don’t look past people being able to buy whatever they want, whenever they want.
But we are not. We think we’re getting away with it because we trust salesmen’s explanations of why it doesn’t matter, and anyone talking about is just depressing confidence.
I reckon that will be looked on as negative.
And if we don’t change, and start regulating ourselves so we get people who regulate behaviour rewarded by power rather than marginalised, politics doesn’t get better and more stable.
It gets a lot worse and unstable.
Why does everyone ignore climate change when they’re thinking about the future? Don’t you think it’s already having an impact?
pajamakitten@reddit
Because people are not good at thinking that far ahead, especially when they are more concerned about the immediate future. Not to mention scientific illiteracy and no desire to give up current lifestyles.

Shocking really how many people automatically drive for even 1/2-1 mile (away from say doing the weekly shop) which can be walked in 10-15 minutes for most people. My grandparents wouldn't dream of driving such short distances. Even my mum would refuse to drive the 2 miles to school. I remember hating it! Walking 2 miles seemed far as a kid.
But no one did. Every kid walked to school! People will say we live busier lives now. Yet we work less hours. Can get everything delivered to our homes. More WFH. Doesn't add up.
PurchaseDry9350@reddit
Average walking speed is 3mph, so 15 minutes for half a mile would be 33% faster than normal, let alone 1 mile
deathmetalbestmetal@reddit
Nah, everyone is aware of the externalities already, but still see it as being worth it.
theocrats@reddit
Many places dont have alternatives.
My village doesn't have a shop. Next village does, 2 miles away. Perfectly fine distance to walk or cycle to. However, there is no path. So to walk id have to walk on the road with motorists doing 60mph.
I want to bloody walk.
deathmetalbestmetal@reddit
That's great for you, but most people would generally much rather drive a four mile round trip anyway. People tend not to have an hour and a half spare to do a little shop.
theocrats@reddit
Oh sorry didnt know youre the spokesman for "most people"
Have a good day now!
deathmetalbestmetal@reddit
The NTS data is freely available for all to see. About 70% of journeys between 1-5 miles are made by car. Most people are patently not prevented from making these journeys because they, like you, live on a rural road with no footpath.
I have no idea what point you think you're making. Why would I be inaccurate about the cycle time?
theocrats@reddit
You purposely put a very slow estimate on walking time to convey a 2mile walk as long journey.
If the alternatives are there people will move away from cars. Its unfortunate that in many places it doesn't exist. When local councils attempt to implement LTNs or active travel, many motorists start frothing at the mouth. Screaming "war on cars" even though our entire public space is dedicated to one form of transport.
deathmetalbestmetal@reddit
You said it was two miles to the shop. That's a four mile round trip. The average walking speed is 3mph. You spend ten minutes in the shop.
Do you need me to spell out the maths or would you like to admit you were wrong?
The more you make the alternatives more like cars, i.e. faster, more convenient, more comfortable, more practical, more flexible etc., yes people will shift. The point I'm making is that the idea that people will look back negatively on what is patently the best overall solution for most people in this day and age, is silly.
Nobody is unaware of the externalities as with things like smoking, but they're seen as a worthwhile tradeoff.
civilised_chat@reddit
We’re obviously nowhere near as bad as the US but our public transport infrastructure needs to improve significantly before this happens.

Watching reels / Tiktok / videos at full volume without headphones on public transport has to be one of the most unpleasant and antisocial forms of currently normalised behaviour. It's mindboggling that there are still no signs or warnings displayed anywhere to ban or even discourage this.
sampoo92@reddit
I don’t think it’s normalised, I think it’s just that people are scared to say something. Last time I told some school kids to behave on a bus hell broke loose and intensively worried a teenage girl might physically attack me. It definitely didn’t use to be this bad
bruvlowski@reddit
When everyone sees everyone else doing something without consequence, it's normalised. I live in Birmingham and catch buses daily, and I'd say 80% of my journeys are now accompanied by someone's phone playing shit at full volume. If they're near me, I'll ask them firmly to turn it down, and they always do. They're only doing it because it's been normalised and never told otherwise.

Passivity. "Why did they do nothing when _______?" will be a big one.
Also in the same vein: "Why did they think that___________?" because hindsight is 20/20.
We ask exactly those questions about previous generations; future generations will be asking that about us.
mrhippoj@reddit
I honestly don't think this will change. Most people do nothing. We all learned about the Nazis growing up and yet the far right still exists and at times like now, thrives. I think there will always be people that view the horrors of the past as something almost mythical that could never happen today, and people who will question whether they were really that bad, and both of those sets allow it to come back. Add to that the fact that the vast majority of people just want to survive and get on with their lives, hardly anyone really does anything about it

Caffeine. Its our modern day smoking.
It effects your sleep, your drinking, your eating and your blood.
You sleep less, drink less, eat more and your body adapts to having thin blood cells. As soon as you stop, the tower of cards you've just built collapses and it'll damage everything.
This is from experience, I drank 3 energy drinks a day for 15 years, I went cold turkey for 48 hours and the sheer pain I went through caused me to have permanent subtle vertigo. So I started caffeine again but slowly cut down, but you naturally want to eat more for energy so I gained 20kg in 6 months.

It’s the world most popular psychoactive drug and has been used for millennia lmao, it’s going nowhere
They tried that with the energy drink age ban which is widely considered a massive failure
Drath101@reddit
The energy drinks are shockingly addictive. I went cold turkey on smoking with relative ease. When I figured I was drinking too much I quit that for 9 months and came back to it with a much better attitude to it.
Energy drinks? Got into them working my vile shift job and I just can't beat them, even now I'm in an office job with a routine sleeping schedule. I'm on one a day but can't stop that final one

Using phones and devices while driving - yes, it's illegal, and you'll get a fine, points and if it contributes to a collision, or a breach of the road traffic act it can be treated as an aggravating factor, but lots of people still do it (if I'm driving, I usually set my phone to airplane mode).
Also, the proliferation of speed cameras - I read an article in Motor Cycle News 10 years after they were first introduced, and the chief constable that pushed for their introduction was disappointed with how it had been done - namely he anticipated them being an aid to traffic divisions, allowing them more time to focus on other road crimes, but what ended up happening was lots of cameras turning up everywhere and traffic divisions budgets being gutted and the money redirected elsewhere.
I think he made a telling point by saying that cameras can't stop a banned driver, driving impaired, with no tax, MOT or insurance, but someone late for work, or distracted by kids on the school run doing 37mph gets penalised.

Generally anything that is unnecessary but has health consequences eg excessive alcohol consumption.
Basically I think if alcohol was a new discovery, governments would prohibit it in the same way they have for drugs. Retrospective prohibition was tried in the US but the cat was already out of the bag.

Money.
Money is an ancient concept that helps humanity create stable societies. However it has a fundamental flaw. It creates poverty and equates power with wealth.
Future generations who have found a workable alternative to money will wonder how we ever coped without it.

I feel like that has the potential to just amp up until we are paying subscriptions for everything… don’t modern cars have subscription services for some of their safety features already? You pay thousands for a car and still don’t own it outright.
I don’t see the impetus for companies to move away from this model honestly. Why go for a one-off payment when you can get customers on the hook for years/ life?

There isn't a doubt at me that the animals selected for participation in this industry don't view humans as being equivalent to demons, and I think there will come a day when humanity looks back at what we did to these animals, the way we "processed" them, and all the machinery we built to do it to maximum efficiency with the complete disregard of the experience of the animal, and experience sickness and disgust.
