What’s the last work-related question you had to go and find the answer to?

Almost anything to do with our company policies. When we set it up I bought a pack of policies that covered everything, bullying, equality, information security etc. all guaranteed to be compliant with legislation. I did scan through some of it, but generally it's just there unless someone asks a question. Really it's only the iso27001, holiday and sickness policies that anyone cares about

What are the less obvious things in someone's upbringing or background that can limit their opportunities later in life?

While very anecdotal, I see this living in Poland. I'm in Croatia at a campsite (chalets) and my children are playing with an English couple. They're complaining about how expensive going out for a meal each evening is, whereas we and most of the polish families are cooking almost all our meals

I don't entirely agree that it's natural disposition. I think it's more a product of nurture than nature and relies on one having parents who made you feel sufficiently secure

I came out quite well compared to my peers. About £800 in my account and £9K of loans. Chatting to my friends on average most were about £2K into their overdraft

I think you could write this off as a byproduct of wealth, class, education etc. but I think there's more to it. There is a sense of comfort that some people have even in novel situations because they have a toolkit of experiences to deal with it. Even if they out of their depth. Take for example someone going to a Michelin starred restaurant and not being familiar with it. One person has the social confidence to deal with their ignorance in a confident manner, asking questions and making jokes about their minor faux pas (and yes I did look up the plural form). The second becomes defensive and uncomfortable because they don't feel like they know how it all works.

Who can afford to smoke anymore?

What I really miss is smoking at work. Short breaks chatting with people from other departments with no sense of guilt as management were with you. Also smoking while waiting for things.

I work in IT. An answer so vague that it reveals nothing and doesn't envite further queries. If someone else working in IT asks for detail I can put them off with "Enterprise Integration Systems" which again is deathly dull but vague. If I need to kill it completely I can pull out the absolute guaranteed to end a conversation forever option. It's for parking systems

In the past, when we had more people, we did. I think it was well worth it even if it's not something I'm interested in. It was far more effective for team building than anything we ever organised. We did the usual sweepstakes and pools, along with putting matches on the TV if they were in office hours. We'd also sometimes do a catered lunch if it tied nicely into a fixture. We used to have the TV out for Wimbledon so it wasn't exclusively football.

Two factors 1. The people living there making a mess 2. The people living there needing council money for social provision, policing, education etc. leaving nothing for cleaning

Work leaving dinner - Do you attend for someone you've only spoken to in passing?

Posted by Faultylntelligence@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 28 comments

BeardedBaldMan@reddit

Who is paying for it? If it's work paying then I'll attend. Regardless of your intentions and feelings, by attending you look like a team player. You make appropriate small talk, don't drink too much and leave early on but not too early.

I had a friend who is lovely but she was terrible for that, especially as she'd be telling everyone what a lightweight she was and later would be loudly saying "One glass of wine affects me so much, I hope no one takes advantage of my state" while pointedly staring at the object of her affection.

What is front lawn Etiquette in shared flat?

It's a shared space with no clear rules. You either get everyone to agree to a timeshare system or you just join these people for drinks and music. I don't think you can reasonably expect people not to use their limited green space in this weather.

Has something changed with dogs?

Posted by Probablyatrollmaybe@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 72 comments

I remember dogs in the 80/90s being a bit different to that. Not in how you talk about them being treated but more along the lines of "we had him put down, he was eleven and showing his age" to which the response was usually "that's not a bad age for a lab and they don't want to be at the vets all the time"

The other one is when people visit and they want restaurant recommendations and are annoyed as you recommend another country's food. Sorry, but I don't want what I eat at home in a restaurant and that Italian place is really good.

I moved abroad and you see it on the country specific subs "I want to do what locals do". Why? I work, take my children to school and shop in the supermarket. You're not coming around to my garden for beer & sausages unless you're going to help mow the lawn or do some weeding.

The US does have more powerful sockets. They could have the NEMA 14-30 that would be installed in the laundry room for the dryer added to the kitchen. That gives up to 7.2KW

An electric kettle, usually plastic or metal. I prefer metal as they look nicer. They're so ubiquitous that we don't really think about it much when we buy one. They're all around 3KW so you pick based on look

What’s your approach to claiming expenses at work?

BeardedBaldMan@reddit

My policy has always been to claim for everything that could possibly be covered by the policy no matter how small. If I'm expected to be away from home then I'm not going to feel bad about hitting the expense limit for each meal or having the taxi driver waiting for me in the arrivals lounge

>Every year i go to Download festival, every year i listen to every band on the lineup to find new ones worth seeing I did that when I was younger. I'd go to Dot to Dot in Bristol, Great Escape in Brighton etc. and build playlists of new people. >The core of what i like has remained the same for 3 decades, This is where I'm not so sure. I've had some major shifts that have covered metal, grime, electro clash, electro pop, folk, celtic punk, jazz and currently quite poppy.

> the algorithms are typically very good at defining your taste I would appreciate it if they could tell me what my taste is though. Because when I'm asked "what do you like?" I no longer have an answer. I press play on a generated playlist and it seems to be a mix of stuff all of which I like. Or I find an [album](https://open.spotify.com/album/7ztYs1cGt5EkHppMFcvNtN?si=vqDolsygRv-zCqrh5czkfQ) which I think is amazing and listen to it on repeat for 40 hours. Which is why I wonder if I even have a taste in music.

> It starts out by giving you a basic understanding of things that are similar between English and your target language. How does it deal with languages where the similarities with English start and end at having nouns, adjectives and verbs? Especially those with more complex grammars where the grammar is something that you have to get to grips with even for A2 level

There's a big difference to giving one person some suncream vs eight, especially when there's a shop nearby. In that case I'd have pointed out where the shop is, especially as we tend to buy the more expensive brands.

Hi guys! My partner and I are completing on a house this week, what tips do you recommend or what do you wish you'd done when first buying a house?

Posted by TheLittleSquire@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 129 comments

BeardedBaldMan@reddit

This has worked well for us when moving house. Put all boxes in a spare room and just get your absolute essentials out. Then spend the next few days doing a deep clean of the house while its empty, create a snagging list while you're going it and fix small issues if you can do it straight away. Then do your unpacking into a properly clean house. When unpacking. If you're pulling something out of a box and you don't have a good idea of where it would go, what it would do or if you really want it. Put it in a box for getting rid of.
