I do 37.5 hours over 4 days with Mondays as my non-working day. It gives me a 3 day weekend every weekend which I love. I do 08:00-18:00/17:30 Tuesday through Friday.
For a few years I did a Suez pattern
It rotates over 28 days, and you do blocks of 4/5 12 hour shifts (days followed by nights) followed by 4/5 days off.
Then if you booked the right block of 4 shifts off, you would get 14 days off work for 48hrs holiday allowance.
The worst bit was the halfway swap from days to nights...
But I much prefer longer but fewer work days! Although I do now work 8-4 Mon-Fri..
Currently two long days and two short days, off Wednesday + weekends.
The long days are quite tiring but never work more than two days in a row, so it works well for me
> Seen some jobs on boats, 12 hour shift everyday for 14 days then 2 weeks off! Imagine stacking holiday pay, could easily get a month off fully paid!!
Depending on where that is (and industry), your holiday allowance may be consolidated into the normal two weeks off. That said, for UK coastal/ferry/offshore it's also not unusual to have 2 additional weeks off per year but that is usually part of a leave rota with everyone else on board so you don't get full flexibility on when to take it. If everyone has young kids then school holidays are definitely a premium period. Often the leave schedule will be set up for the full calendar year in advance if it's a fairly stable/permanent gig.
If living onboard, the 14 days on often turns into 15 as you need to be on board for 336 hours until the other crew comes back, and then travel to/from the port. Joining/leaving times can also be at odd hours and if you need to travel far/early/late could involve finding local accommodation for a night each time.
You can also "lose" a day or two either end between winding down after coming home and getting ready to go away again. Not to mention those two weeks away are quite a bit different than just being out for the day at work, you *will* be missing family events, birthdays, weddings etc. if they are not actively planned around your working schedule.
Actually work wise, the 12 hour shifts aren't too bad, that typically also includes an hour for lunch and other breaks. And with effectively no commuting on board, most of the 12 hours off is yours - you could easily get 10 hours sleep most days.
It's worth remembering that many positions may require night cover and so you do nights on a rota, which like any night work takes it's toll and getting used to.
Lol. Imagine having a regular work pattern. This week I'm doing
Mon | Tue | Wed | Thu | Fri | Sat | Sun
---|---|----|----|----|----|----
Off (after a night shift) | 0800-2200 | Off | 1300-2200 | 0845-0600 | 2200-0400 | off
My industry is not condusive to regular patterns
Circumstances.
when I was single, long stints of long hours with more days off. I used to do 5 days of 12 hour shifts, 2 days off, 5 days of 12 hour shifts then 5 days off. Those 5 days we always amazing.
When I had kids. Mon-Fri 9-5 just makes life easier. Society is designed a lot around schools and childcare.
I have the weirdest but decent rota. Average 30hrs a week on a 3 tier rota with earlies (7am - 14:30) latest (14:30 - 21:30) and nights (21:30-07:30). Nights do 4 on then 7 off then 3 on then 2 off then onto my late shifts which are like 2 days on then 3 off then 2 on then 4 earlies with a few days off then a weekend of lates then a couple days off then 4 earlies. That's just a quick breakdown too there's variations to it each cycle.
Gives so good days off but the night shifts are horrible plus it's tiring changing pattern
Genuinely 9-5 works for me. In order to get decent rest I need the consistency and due to health issues cant do long days. So 9 to 5 means I can work and still have energy to enjoy my life outside of work.
I’m torn on 9-5, I like the regularity, but hate how weekends come and go.
My ideal would be 3 x 12 hour shifts 6-6 Tues-Thu. Not really compatible with most businesses though!
I work Tuesday-Saturday 2pm-10pm and lowkey hate it. Some of my colleagues do 4 days 12-10pm, which is maybe better but we don't have any vacancies for that pattern so I can't switch... I think my ideal work pattern would probably be a solid 4 days 9-7 so I can get that shit out of the way and still have some evening to work with, plus 3 day weekend.
Ten til two with an hour and a half for lunch, alternate Wednesdays.
Paid for 40 hours a week.
I’m working 8 - 5 Monday to Friday for the first time in my career, and I don’t mind it.
For me, the key is knowing when my days off will be months in advance, but I don’t care if they’re weekends or week days.
Three ten hour days a week. You take a hit on total pay but end up with a four day weekend.
Currently I'm doing five six hour days which is great for the school runs but doesn't feel the same in terms of being able to get stuff done
I’m a 9 to 5er now.
Used to be a GM of a busy restaurant circa 60 hour weeks, different start finish times, sometime 16 hour days. And long stretches.
After about day 7/8 in a row I would start to getting really out whack, sleep, eating schedule was absolutely fucked, I’d get very emotional, very sensitive. It wasn’t healthy at all.
Which is what always put me off the ships, even know the money is great.
A lot of people that thrived in that kinda environment now.
I think I’m just a person that requires more regular down time.
And personally I couldnt do anymore than the 9 to 5 I do now.
