I like Bluesky, it tends to attract a pretty nerdy audience with lots of niche interests. It hasnt been enshittified yet and its fun to hang out there

I don’t know about you guys, but I cannot keep up with pop culture these days. This is how I know I’m getting old. I guess I don’t care though. I know like a few musical artists that are current but for the most part when I hear new stars names I have no idea who they are or what they do.

I don't even bother, especially with gen Z music. A neice was showing me some Olivia Rodrigo song she loved and holy-moly was it absolute garbage. I kept my opinion to myself but if that's what passes for music these days thanks but I'm going back to my background videogame soundtracks

Funny story but I was home schooled throughout high school. When I first went to take the SATs for uni I saw a bunch of people wearing pajama bottoms just like this. They were so long they mopped the floor and the bottom hems were absolutely filthy. I was a bit appalled, TBH

For us it was more than we were super poor and two members of the family who will go unnamed were selfish and would eat all the leftovers overnight (usually leaving behind 1 tablespoon as "my portion") so if I didn't eat it all at once it was gone.

Customer service if that's the only option. But for personal phone calls? I think I made one in the last year, maybe 5 since the start of the pandemic! I have my phone set to DND and will never answer a call unless its from a contact, everyone else needs to message me first.

There also was an awkward phase after that (2008ish) where people'd say "bible" after every convo instead. "See you at the party! Bible!" IDK, maybe it was a regional thing. I think it meant something like "I swear/I promise" but it was a weird trend that only lasted like a year. One that I hope never returns, bible.

Same. I don't feel like the US is my home country, rather country of birth, but I will reluctantly admit that there are a few things that were better there. Texmex is high on that list.

I did it last night when I went solo camping. Then there were hunters shooting nearby in the woods and I got spooked and fled. So I guess I can also check off "night hiking" from my bucket list.

From my personal experiences: Dealing with the bureaucracy in your new country will forever be a headache (and pain in many other places as well). Triple double bonus points if you're not C2 level proficient in the language because guess what? All those govt forms use the big archaic rarely seen words that you have to painstakingly look up and try to decipher their ancient runes of meaning. You will lose your old home and never fully gain a new one. You may have legal citizenship but you'll never quite feel like anything but an outsider masquerading really well. You will become angrier or sadder at your birth country as time goes by. No one back there will feel the same and the rift will steadily grow. Like 420? In some places it's A-okay light it up, in others pick up a new vice. Fully understand the laws where you are. Trying to DIY any minor repair will become an all day task. Pro tip: find whatever your new country's closest version of a Lowes/Home Depot is. In Europe it's likely OBI or Hornbach (or many others). In other countries this will be multiple small shops. The chips will never taste right.

Her music wasn't my cup of tea or something that I'd choose to listen to, but I think she was talented and her image was "authentically manufactured" if that makes sense. I think if she'd lived she'd be at top tier A lister level musician now

How long have you been away from your home country, and do you ever plan to go back?

Posted by Island_Expat6625@reddit | expats | View on Reddit | 77 comments

Aeon_Return@reddit

We moved out in 2016 though we maintain property and citizenship in the US for financial gain and voting rights. At this point I don't ever planning on returning to live though we visit for 1-2 months every 2 years (to check on things and to vote). Otherwise that country is dead to me.

So, what form have you decided that your mid-life crisis will take?

On a global scale no because of rapidly falling birth rates will create a labor shortage. Some of that will be replaced by machines and AI but not enough and governments will need to bring in foreign workers.

People who've left the United States, what is your life like now?

Posted by SkyLyssa@reddit | expats | View on Reddit | 647 comments

Aeon_Return@reddit

We left in 2016 but had one foot out the door for several years before that. We still own property in the US that I'm hoping to turn into rentals. That and a desire for spite voting have kept me from fully renouncing my US citizenship even though I never want to go there and go out of my way to not buy or support anything from there. Now we're settled in Europe and it's honestly been the single best choice we ever made for our family. Life here isn't without its ups and downs but overall we're really happy.

What do you say when someone asks you where you're originally from and you don't want to tell them?

Posted by Aeon_Return@reddit | expats | View on Reddit | 86 comments

Aeon_Return@reddit (OP)

This is a great answer! And someone above also said that they're not actually asking where I was born but more trying to establish some common ground. So that's what I'm going to do, I'll stick with telling them where I currently live and then redirecting the conversation elsewhere. Thank you for your answer!

I did get some good answers, thank you! Yeah the rest is just reddit being reddit, it's very easy to ignore the answers that aren't given in good faith. I'm going to go with trying a few different things but likely I'll stick to "oh I'm living in X now" (and then immediately change the subject). Which is the truth but also doesn't disclose more than I want to share with a stranger. Thanks :)
