What social media is our age group using now?
Posted by thebookofswindles@reddit | Xennials | View on Reddit | 182 comments
I took a long and necessary break from social media and now I can’t seem to orient myself around what’s left.
I’m especially interested in what can establish or help maintain offline relationships. If you know, please let me know!
brattybabyc@reddit
Reddit is all I have the patience for, and some days…
VisiblePlatform6704@reddit
It's so sad they broke Facebook. I used to like seeing what my pals from other countries were up to. I made several of friend in my 20s/30s because I lived in different parts of the world.
Now everything is 10 second video crap from "influencers" I dont care about
Lensgoggler@reddit
Same. It's one of the reasons I still have Facebook and Insta - I have no other means of contact with my overseas friends and acquiantances. I'm mostly on Reddit.
Kramereng@reddit
Same reasons for me - my foreign friends. Just hit up my Balkan bud I hadn’t talked to in yrs and his old # was no good. Took a minute but he responded on fb, which he also rarely uses, updated me with his number, and we reconnected. So I’ll keep fb for that. Never really used insta and don’t care to.
Reddit is great but you have to unsubscribe from every default account and then find your niche communities. Default Reddit is trash but when you curate your feed and subs, it’s no different than old school message boards.
I still will check default subs like r/news, r/worldnews, r/movies, r/television, etc., however…
Pro-Tip: I don’t join any such default subs otherwise my feed would be insufferable. Instead, I add shortcuts to the Reddit bookmark bar for quick access. Keeps my feed full of niche interests and free from noise.
nudave@reddit
Hey great news. They’re in the process of breaking Reddit, too!
Hidden account history just as LLMs are getting good will be the death of this platform.
ASingleThreadofGold@reddit
Yup, that was a huge mistake and will eventually drive me off of this platform too.
96dpi@reddit
Not trying to argue with you but it's way worse than that. It's mostly rage bait, AI rage bait, ads after every 2-3 posts, posts that are unsponsored ads, and don't even get me started on the comments.
tryingisbetter@reddit
And I am getting so sick of the bots on this site too. It's so bad.
archiekane@reddit
Also, same content on repeat for karma farming.
Anglofsffrng@reddit
Same here.
Purple-Protagonist@reddit
bex_nh@reddit
It’s all I have left! Deleted my FB and IG accounts back in Jan ‘25 and then deleted my TikTok account this Jan ‘26.

This one.
nuggetbailey@reddit
Just reddit now, I walked away from fb and Instagram several months ago and I don't miss it at all. The rage bait, ai, suggested crap and ads sent me over the edge on both.
crematoryfire@reddit
I do Reddit and Discord. Everything else seems so performative/annoying.
tijuanagolds@reddit
Never got he hang of Discord. And I'm a major PC gamer since Doom.
tehgimpage@reddit
why do yall make it so complicated for yourselves? its just a normal chat program like every other chat program. there's voice rooms and text rooms divided by subject. it's not hard
Boring_Pace5158@reddit
I’m praying for the revival of MySpace and Friendster. Maybe a Geocities comeback
Imaginary-Bunch-460@reddit
I made a GeoCities reference today and got blank stares back from nearly everyone. No one believed that websites had a visitor counter at the bottom or a request to “sign our guestbook”.
obscurecloud@reddit
Onboarding this brand as a customer led me to their site. View it on a computer for the full experience. You won't be sorry. Gave me angel fire vibes but well done.

ChiefSampson@reddit
I really enjoyed Myspace. After everyone moved on to FB everything was so stale, and corporate.
frankreynoldsrumham@reddit
chubgrub@reddit
bebo anyone?
TiaHatesSocials@reddit
I deleted it all and Reddit is the only one left. But that too is going away eventually. It’s taking way too much time and it’s just brain rot. Like real brain rot. When was the last time u learned something here and felt good about spending ur time on it?
BigFatBlackCat@reddit
The more Reddit and Meta don’t care about bots and AI, the less I care about social media.
I could justify scrolling before but now that my feeds are 70% complete and total bullshit between AI, bots and influencers, I just don’t want to engage. So I’ve been focusing on getting away from screens as much as possible.
I only check Facebook to see if anyone died.
Hoodiebug22@reddit
Reddit. Because all the rest are sucking the life out of us. Social media is the reason so many people are so anxious and insecure now. It sells false narratives and misinformation more than anything.
thejamhole@reddit
Reddit, Twitter, and Instagram. But mostly reddit.
DarthFuzzzy@reddit
I'm on MySpace and aol
superhex12345@reddit
Just Reddit now. Probably checking out here too. Kind of over social media.
Coraline1599@reddit
I just bought a fountain pen and some paper. I’m going to write my friends some letters and mail them.
I am nit really expecting anyone to write me back, but that’s ok
That’s where I am at with social media.
monty08@reddit
I took calligraphy class in high school. fountain pens are a SKILL!
(its not easy ... often messy, you will have ink on your hands for days during the learning stages)
EatsCrackers@reddit
Huh, I never found fountain pens to be any messier. Maybe with a calligraphy nib it’s different, but bog standard fine tip? Nah.
PetuniaPicklePepper@reddit
We did calligraphy in elementary school and me and my artistic autistic BFF were obsessed.
TheGillos@reddit
You went back, back, back. Before Gen-X, Boomer, Silent, Greatests, Hell, even the LOST generation had communications like the telephone, telegraph, and radio!
You're more Amish than Xennial.
Coraline1599@reddit
Don’t worry, I still have to use a computer for work, Teams, Excel, the AIs, etc. those are not leaving my life any time soon.
I just realized I want computers as productivity tools, not a full lifestyle.
There is no tracking, no ads, no algorithms, no data being collected from what I write being used to sell me stuff. Which is nice to have that mental space for a bit of time every day.
Even if it isn’t as fast, or productive, or cool, I think it still serves where my nervous system is at these days.
InfamousCantaloupe38@reddit
That's a very healthy outlook imo, on to the Slow movement. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slow_movement_(culture)
this_knee@reddit
The snail mail has tracking … and ads.
It’s just not as apparent.
Remember “junk mail.” Those are … say it with me … ads.
And the usps allows you to sign up to have the picture snap shots they take of your, and everyone’s, mail, forwarded over to you too.
It’s allllll tracked.
stamata_tomata@reddit
The mail might be tracked but the contents of the letter are not, doubly so if you use Sir James Jays "sympathetic stain" invisible ink formula. If the ruffians manage to decipher ones personal correspondence well then it's time to affix bayonets to ones musket and cry tally ho and go to town
AbeFromanSassageKing@reddit
You, sir or madam, exhibit an exceptionally elevated perspicacity.
EchoTango77@reddit
I don’t know what you’re saying but I’m with you
Twnc@reddit
He’s not really after communicating. It’s more about the pleasure of writing.
matchalover@reddit
I started sending postcards to my friends every month, I am now getting monthly postcards from them too. I am obsessed with fountain pens.
EricRShelton@reddit
I got into fountain pens and nice stationery back when deployments to Afghanistan were still a thing. It just seemed so much more personal to send my wife than an email or text. (Data speeds for video chat were still iffy back then.) It’s a wonderful hobby!
What pen/pens do you have, and would you like any more? I’m going to Japan in a couple days for a short business trip and they have great line of “disposable” fountain pens I can’t find in the U.S. anymore. Platinum Preppy, iirc. I’m gonna grab some for myself and I’ll gladly grab a couple extra if you want.
Dunnersstunner@reddit
I've been writing people typewritten letters lately. They've all been thrilled to get them.
blamberr@reddit
Reddit?
whamburglar@reddit
I'd be very touched and happy getting a letter like that from someone! I think your friends would love the thought and effort.
ChiefSampson@reddit
Man I would be ecstatic if I received a hand written letter in the mail. Can't remember the last time that happened. It's a fantastic idea!
Funkopedia@reddit
Thank you on behalf of the post office.
Also check out Writing on the Wall: Social Media—The First 2,000 Years by Tom Standage. It's about older forms of communication that served the same function as modern social media. The similarities are quite eerie.
bridymurphy@reddit
I use to write letters to my grandmother before she passed. She loved them and we kept up to date with the comings and going’s.
lakebistcho@reddit
Hell yeah! My kind of social media.
Peanut083@reddit
Pretty much just Reddit these days. The only reason I still have Facebook at all is because I have a couple of community groups I’m involved with that share info through a Facebook page. But I pretty much go on Facebook and do a search specifically for the group, read any updates, then close the app.
I also occasionally use Facebook Messenger for DMs with certain people and groups.
JessBx05@reddit
I use Reddit and Facebook. FB mainly cause all my friends joined when it first came to Australia and we still use it for its original intent - keeping in touch with each other. I do get annoyed with the algorithms and incessant ads though.
Classic_Breadfruit18@reddit
Substack. Unfortunately there is not platform I can actually see what I want from my real friends anymore. But at least Substack doesn't make me get stupider every minute I use it.
luxtabula@reddit
I'm on everything but Snapchat and Pinterest.
Most people my age are on Instagram, FB or Reddit. Free have migrated to tiktok. Twitter and its clones are a weird realm to discuss.
Reddit is the only one where I have meaningful interactions. Instagram only works if you're incredibly niche and built up an audience. Same with tiktok. FB is just bizarre and not a place to chat anymore. I don't understand it, it seems like it's purposely stopping you from talking to others unless you're trying to argue.
YEMolly@reddit
Instagram & Reddit for me.
MoonlitBlossoms@reddit
Same. I spend more time on Instagram, but I enjoy Reddit.
Sandkat@reddit
All my hobby related content and friends are on Instagram so I use it quite a bit.
EarlGrey1984@reddit
Me too!
NutellaPC@reddit
Is YouTube social media? I don’t interact with the comments or the community parts much so I don’t consider it as such, but if it is, I use yt, Reddit, and Instagram. I kicked fb years ago and I know I should can ig too but I’m fond of Instagram for some reason.
I’ve tried to leave Reddit several times but I always feel cut adrift from current events and lost in a way that I don’t feel with other social media, so I always end up coming back. This degenerate place has fully Stockholmed me, I guess 😭
Illustrious-Lead-960@reddit

tasukiko@reddit
I get reviews and thoughts on things here in Reddit. I post pictures of food and projects I'm making on Facebook. I chat with my friends via messenger and or text and in person of course. My besties and I got digital picture frames that we send each other pictures on of anything we don't want all over the world so basically anything with people's faces but I'm not sure it that counts exactly.
Designer_Government4@reddit
You’re on it. Pretty much Reddit exclusively. Instagram for my photography
mrnoonan81@reddit
The only thing left is arguing with people on Reddit.
stackpolio@reddit
No it’s not, you’re wrong. So absolutely terrifically wrong. Maybe the wrongest person in the history of wrong.
thebookofswindles@reddit (OP)
Sounds like you have a source to add. Do you? (sincerely)
stackpolio@reddit
Sorry OP, I was just fooling around. No sources here because I don’t know nothing!
I’m still on FB and Reddit, mostly for the hobby groups I belong to. Twitter is a dumpster fire. Reddit is too, mostly. I’m too old and reclusive to be bothered with Insta or Snap or TikTok or any of the other GenZ platforms.
If you have hobbies/interests/obsessions, try seeking a group of like-minded people on FB or Reddit.
Hope you’re able to find a group of people with whom you can have great community, though!
Negative-Wrap95@reddit
ash_erebus@reddit
Instagram is definitely more of a Millennial app than a Gen Z one
thebookofswindles@reddit (OP)

Your neck hairs must be cutting off circulation to your brain if you really think that's true. Even a feral child could point to the obvious flaw in your thought process - because it's at the end of the stick.
MungoJennie@reddit
I have a Facebook and Instagram, and this, I guess, but I never check fb and only post on insta about twice a year.
jadethebard@reddit
My real life friends are still on Facebook primarily, though it's far quieter than it used to be. I also use bluesy and obviously reddit. I have some friends on discord but honestly I don't really like using it, it's more my kid's platform.
Worried-Trade-6407@reddit
You're on it!
Mekroval@reddit
I use reddit, Facebook (yes it still has its uses), Messenger, Instagram and occasionally Bluesky.
Of them all, I use reddit the most heavily, but I find Facebook/Messenger the best way to keep in touch with old friends and family, and occasionally making new friends.
al_rey503@reddit
Mostly Reddit tbh.
DooficusIdjit@reddit
A great many of my friends pretty much quit all social media outside of professionally important stuff. Reddit is the only one I participate in besides a handful of hobby related discords
Professional_Use6852@reddit
I’m only on Reddit
webslingrrr@reddit
I believe we are everywhere, at least speaking from a younger xennial/elder millennial perspective.
Though, Facebook probably the least, of the major ones.
bedtimedoesntsuitme@reddit
TikTok and Reddit
tijuanagolds@reddit
Innertia seems to be pulling me towards Telegram for some reason. How is it any different fro WhatsApp??
DJmagikMIKE@reddit
Reddit is it. It goes down…I’ll just be done with anything of the sort.
sleepy_unicorn40@reddit
Same here. I'm over being on social media (minus reddit). I deleted my Tik Tok after they sold it. I deleted my Instagram and FB back in 2019.
BornTry5923@reddit
Only reddit and YouTube
Master-Topic-2989@reddit
Reddit is my go to these days. I still have a private IG/Threads that I look at sometimes. Lots of stuff happened in life and I had to block and/or minimize contact w just about everybody. I like being anonymous. Ok but do you guys remember Xanga??? That was my jam. 😆
handsoapdispenser@reddit
Bluesky is ok. It's like 1% the volume of twitter which is honestly great and just lets you do a reverse chron of your follows and no algorithm.
kittenpantzen@reddit
Bluesky is good if you keep it to where you're only seeing posts from people you actually know. Although, before the musk takeover, the same could have been said about Twitter.
lassie86@reddit
Threads is really good right now. Trying to enjoy it while it lasts.
There are plenty of LLM posts, but not as bad as Reddit yet.
bransanon@reddit
I feel like social media for our generation has been replaced by everyone having a small handful of group iMessage chats they're active in on a semi-regular basis.
LoudAd1396@reddit
I quit Facebook 2010 Quit Twitter after the Musk takeover Tried Spoutible, found it insufferable These days its just reddit.
WhosYourPadre79@reddit
Facebook is an absolute shit hole now. All politics, never see any post from my friends as it's all "suggested post" and the ads are the worst.
kittenpantzen@reddit
As a social media platform, Facebook sucks.
But, if you want to buy or sell used things, Craigslist has been DOA for years and Facebook is what killed it. It's also still used for hobby groups and events, but the biggest thing I use it for is marketplace.
LoudAd1396@reddit
I quit after I got an ad that was something like "ten things to tell the cops when you accidentally shoot an invader on your property". Had that account from the .edu period
Upon reflection it might have been closer to 2014. Who knows?
inevitablethursday@reddit
Reddit, Discod and online gaming. I have very little bandwidth for socials these days.

Reddit, that's it. Who would have thought Reddit would be the only social media site you came to as an adult to talk to other "normal" people...Or are we just all the weirdos now?
thebookofswindles@reddit (OP)
We were definitely the weirdos now
InternationalRow1653@reddit

Facebook.

InternationalRow1653@reddit
I've never even heard of this blue sky before.
Aggravating-Bunch-44@reddit
Instagram for my kids who post on theirs and a few childhood friends (I am lethal on curating and navigating IG so a I don't get ragebait and consumerist bs)
Discord for current friends and hobby acquaintances
Reddit to learn and chit chat a little here and there on my current interests. I recently bought a dash cam bc of all the honest reviews with videos and learned how to install it. :)
Youtube to learn and for music. I don't use it for the social aspect.
space_wiener@reddit
Same as when I started pretty much. Facebook, Instagram, Reddit. Had TikTok for a business for a while but when you know who bought it, I haven’t been back.
I’ve tried to keep track of stuff on threads, mastodon, blue sky, etc. but it’s just too much.
ACorania@reddit
According to a search, Facebook, LinkedIn, is Instagram, YouTube.
I use YouTube of those but never considered it social at all. For me just reddit
AllDressedKetchup@reddit
Threads seems to be mostly Gen X and Millennials
ChiefSampson@reddit
Just Reddit personally, and You Tube if that's considered part of it. Never made a Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram, Tik Tok, etc.
taleofbenji@reddit
Text messaging is the only social media I use. The rest are intentionally designed to slowly suck the life out of you to turn you into an ad-viewing zombie.
Aggravating-Bunch-44@reddit
You don't use Reddit?
Significant-Rush-129@reddit
Reddit is pretty much it. I felt peer pressured to create a new FB after a full delete and long hiatus but I barely use it no. (And like many of us, I was a regular user of it in my 20s) Instagram was insufferable to me so that was very short lived.
engorgedfjord@reddit
I'm splitting my time between attempts to have face to face time, TikTok, Reddit, and Nextdoor but what I really want is to take a time machine and go back to Myspace
drupi79@reddit
tiktok a little bit for 3d printing content, reddit obviously, but I dumped everything else in 2018 and honestly quite enjoy the peace that came with it. also gave me a good idea of who my friends really were or not.
Obi_Wan_Benobi@reddit
I still have a Facebook account to stay connected with friends and family around the world.
And I use Blue Sky as a Twitter alternative since that went to shit.
Lulu_42@reddit
Reddit and Discord groups. I cut the rest off almost 10 years ago. I kept worrying that I’d miss the updates from people I’m not in frequent contact with, but it turns out I really don’t care what Cousin Sarah is eating for breakfast.
CSWorldChamp@reddit
Reddit. That’s pretty much it.
dragon_morgan@reddit
bluesky is actually pretty good. instagram has good other-people's-content, or at least the algorithm over there likes me and shows me nice stuff, but I don't post much. Threads is toxic af but sometimes I go on there and seek out ragebait just to feel something.

No-Count3834@reddit
Reddit and I see a lot of friends using FB Messenger, not so much Facebook itself anymore.
When I see people post or share funny clips and stuff, I see it in Instagram reels more so. Because otherwise it’s buried by commercials in the algorithm. I think with FB amongst my friends 37-60 it’s to keep up with concerts, where you can mark as going it untreated and social events we may be interested in.
I live in New Orleans, a music city so always community things going on and cool shows. Surprisingly most all my friends do not drink, but like going out to all the fun little things going on. The older you get, if you wanna do that stuff and are single… I think a lot of people in my friend group have realized health is key to keeping up with living life to its fullest.
johnb300m@reddit
Insta and Snapchat. And once in a while, Discord.
FineIJoinedReddit@reddit
For maintaining relationships: texting and Discord.
For general doomscrollibg, news, and pop culture, Reddit and Bluesky.
MsBlondeViking@reddit
Never used anything other than Reddit.
tres-vip@reddit
I feel like no one is actively using any social media platform anymore, because everything's gotten so incredibly shltty. "Enshlttification" in the truest sense of the word. It's been a year since I myself have posted on my own IG, and I used to post prolifically.
IvenaDarcy@reddit
I maintain offline relationships offline. No one I know does much posting on any social media. We all phased out that stage.
But I do enjoy social media to stay somewhat in the loop. Not with friends with a bunch of randos! Lol
spc67u@reddit

Miss_Molly1210@reddit
Reddit and Instagram. I love the reels, honestly. Lots of recipes, lots of generations bonding, lots of cutesy animals that I love but would never/couldn’t handle as pets.
JediNeo101@reddit
I still have a Twitter/X account. Although I never tweet and somehow have 26 followers, all bots. I keep because I follow a lot of sports writers/personalities and nothing is better for instant reactions during live sporting events. Also use it for sneaker info and during SDCC
I still have a FB account but I haven't logged in for years.
Reddit because I can find a sub for pretty much any topic.
nosleeptilbroccoli@reddit
I’m still hanging on to IG mostly as my own personal photo diary, I do t interact with people on it. I also still visit a few old school forums for classic car and boat knowledge. Facebook only for marketplace.

Reddit and one very important discord group for my SDCC habit.
Pankosmanko@reddit

Dr-Alec-Holland@reddit
I don’t touch that stuff. Reddit works because of the anonymity and different format, but eventually I have a feeling I’ll be done here too. Everything finds a way to enshitify eventually.
Melliorin@reddit
... reddit...
bangobot46@reddit
Reddit + Discord to talk to my kids + Signal for group chats with my friends. I still have FB because my work uses it primarily, but I just get on there, check work posts, and get off.
I have Bluesky but it just never really grabbed me. I don't really use it anymore. I don't have anything else. I wish I had a photo sharing place.
pushdose@reddit
Reddit. Too much. But it’s been invaluable for me. I’ve gotten a lot of business from Reddit. IG for my local friends only. The algorithm is terrible. And my beloved YouTube for learning everything for free.

Imaginary-Bunch-460@reddit
YouTube if you count that as social media… then Reddit and BlueSky. Twitter was my main social media for a decade, and I quit that a few years back when it became super awful. Did Facebook in college. I’m too ugly and self conscious for IG. Too old for Snapchat, BeReal, or TikTok. (Remember BeReal? That was huge for six months!)
RoyDonkeyKong@reddit
Group chats are where it’s at.
SorryForPartying6T9@reddit

AwkwardPersonality36@reddit
IG to follow brands/bands/performers & inspo (and my dog’s socials lol)
FB primarily for memories and family, barely anyone engages with what I post but I do it for posterity mainly anyway so idc
Reddit to engage
Beetso@reddit
Reddit is the only social media I use. I guess Instagram a little bit too, but only because people send me stuff.
-threefeetoffun@reddit
Reddit: Every day social
Facebook: I have 12 friends. They are all out of state. Easy to keep up with them.
TikTok: My best friend really wanted to show me anime videos.
Bubbly-Stretch8975@reddit
Group chats for close friends and family, instagram and Facebook for business reasons and acquaintances. I haven’t found a better way to advertise my small biz or find out about community events than those boomer and millennial hellscapes and I do not understand TikTok.
