Natalie Portman is pregnant at 44

Congrats to her! I’m still getting used to being the age where getting pregnant is starting to be “out of the norm”.
cashews_clay15@reddit
Godspeed girl. I had one at 36 and I’m tired.
der_innkeeper@reddit
Right.
But did you have $150,000,000 to help out?
SenseAndSaruman@reddit
It still takes a toll on your body.
Sayhellotoanewday@reddit
She’s super thin too. I am not a doctor but it always seems to take sorting out of the really thin ladies to have babies. Like the nutrients have to come from somewhere. I’m sure she has a great nutritionist but still…
Anyway, good for her. Hope she has no worries and a healthy baby. She always seemed like an alright one for the Hollywood types.
milkcake@reddit
This is a very strange thing to say.
Coriandercilantroyo@reddit
This makes me so curious about women like Victoria Beckham who never seem to gain weight apart from the womb.
madogvelkor@reddit
I believe it, the plus sized women I know who had kids seem to have had an easier time with it and bouncing back than the skinny ones. Though the athletic ones seemed to have it easiest.
Mysterious_Movie3347@reddit
I was about 120lb when I got pregnant with my son and was 118lb 2 days after having him. I was young at 22 but it broke me. I ended up not being able to breast feed cause I just wasn't healthy enough to. I hated every single moment of being pregnant, main reason I never had another child. Love my son, but Nothing could make me be pregnant again, yet alone at 44!
ailish@reddit
My sister had her first at about the same weight, and she's 5'9". Always naturally thin. That whole pregnancy and the labor was so hard on her, and she also couldn't breast feed. She did have another child, but she was about 20 lbs heavier and it went a little more smoothly.
I'm the same height, but I'm more like 150 - 160. Never had kids though.
Anemones_In__Spades@reddit
I also had one at 22, hated being pregnant so didn't have anymore. I'm pretty pleased to be so young and "done" with childrearing. 🥳
bendybiznatch@reddit
I was much smaller than that and recovered fine.
Mysterious_Movie3347@reddit
Good for you? Do you want a cookie?
bendybiznatch@reddit
Just sayin’ I don’t think the claim it’s rough for skinny chicks specifically holds water.
donnadoctor@reddit
Registered Dietitian, hopefully. In the US anyone can call themselves a nutritionist.
the_ballmer_peak@reddit
I've always thought that terminology seemed backwards, but I agree you've got to look out for it.
Love_for_2@reddit
Because she's vegan.
cashews_clay15@reddit
Yeah, this. I was on complete bed rest from 14 weeks to 36 weeks, and my uterus prolapsed resulting in a hysterectomy and bladder repair. You’re considered advanced maternal age after 35, and man did I feel it.
pogulup@reddit
My mother was 40 when she had me. The day I came she bled so bad they didn't think either one of us was going to make it. We were rural and it was a long Amber Lamps ride to the hospital that could handle it. We made it.
She decided to have my younger sister as my mother was a 40s baby and knew what it was like to grow up by herself. So at 41 she got pregnant again. Her doctor was livid. He had told her not to even try after what happened with me. Luckily, my sister was born without an issue.
the_ballmer_peak@reddit
During my wife's hysterectomy they found that the doctor who performed her c-section had stitched her bladder to her uterus.

WHAT
PureObsidianUnicorn@reddit
Good GOD that woman has organs made of steel, mad respect to her for existing through that pain, I’d be ready to hunt and kill the dr
the_ballmer_peak@reddit
He was already dead when we found out.
PunishMeBaby@reddit
I didn't read that as regarded and I laughed louder than I should have.
Boogaloo4444@reddit

Tristram19@reddit
More like SOB. Poor lady!
PureObsidianUnicorn@reddit
Karma said dr man, u not gon enjoy the fruits of your labour but for 6 months. I like that for him.
Inside-Project942@reddit
I just had my 10th bladder surgery following my c-section...13 years ago. Neurogenic bladder caused by a botched section. I now have a supra pubic catheter and am on my 4th Interstim spinal stimulator. It's one of about six neurological conditions that have occurred, stemming from my c-section. Life is tough, but our son was born healthy and strong--as a Mom, that's what has pulled me through every single day!!🙏🏻💙
jennifer_m13@reddit
You k ow after three babies I’ve thought about doing a bladder sling but you know what? I’m good.
Congrats to her but she looks like a Martha in Handmaids Tale here.
Rare_Background8891@reddit
This is my fear. Hugs to you.

minxwink@reddit
WHAT THE FUUUUUCK
Resident-Pattern4034@reddit
Ha!
Called it. In 2017 I predicted the term “geriatric pregnancy” would be considered a slur; that the Overton window would shift so much that doctors would be forced to stop saying it.
The very medical terminology has changed. “Advanced maternal age.”
Fascinating. Off to collect my winnings, using this as a reference, thanks.
comeupforairyouwhore@reddit
Geriatric pregnancy.
itsjakerobb@reddit
They don’t call it that anymore. Advanced Maternal Age is the new term.
comeupforairyouwhore@reddit
I didn’t realize it changed. My soul was crushed when my gyn told me I would be considered geriatric if I got pregnant in my late 30s.
mariposa314@reddit
I imagined my uterus turning to stone and then crumbling into dust when I first heard that I was geriatric maternal age.
NonsequiturSushi@reddit
When did that change? I know they were still using "geriatric pregnancy" about 5 years ago.
comeupforairyouwhore@reddit
I wonder if this is a country specific thing. Most people here are saying it was called a geriatric pregnancy for them. Kudos if it did change because it was a shock to hear.
itsjakerobb@reddit
I’m sure it varies from one doctor/practice/hospital to the next. Some are quicker to pick up on changes, others more stuck in their ways.
I’m not sure who the relevant standard-setter is here. The DSM?
40wiggles@reddit
Not the DSM as it’s for psych diagnosis.
itsjakerobb@reddit
Okay, I wasn’t sure.
Mammoth-Cod6951@reddit
I mean, biologically it is. It's not the ideal time to have a baby - for the mother or child. Lots of complications, chances of autism and downs is higher, and recovery is rough. Sad truth
Battle-Any@reddit
I'm early 40s and had twins 3 years ago. Both terms were used.
ecd000@reddit
Advanced maternal age gravitas was what my records said when I had a baby at 41
gfvddds@reddit
Still listed as geriatric in my health records. 👵
Martin_Aurelius@reddit
They don't call it that anymore (to your face).
CTMechE@reddit
Seriously, it was the "patient-facing literature" that changed first.
Extra_Inflation_7472@reddit
She falls out of advanced age to geriatric at that age. 🤣🤣
CommanderAmander@reddit
During my pregnancy 2 years ago it was documented as geriatric.
ken830@reddit
Hopefully by the time we're decrepit, they'll find a new term to save us from being decrepit.
herrcollin@reddit
"Just had a baby. AMA."
KeyFeeFee@reddit
When I was 39 my pregnancy chart called me an “elderly multigravida”. Elderly. At 39. I was shook.
Kittypie75@reddit
I felt the difference physically having kids between 35 and 39. My friend just had her first at 46.
Otherwise_Weekend327@reddit
I have had kids at 20, 25 and 28, and the difference between 20 and 28 was astounding. My hips were tired with that third one. I had a lot more lightning crotch at 20 though
ineffable_my_dear@reddit
Our bodies are so wild. My first delivery at 23 was a breeze but the recovery kicked my ass, and the second delivery at 35 was a nightmare but I felt fantastic afterwards.
And I don’t know the physiology behind those butt zaps but I experience them randomly (not pregnant) and my son and husband get them, too! They’re the worst when driving. 🤣
Infamous-Goose363@reddit
I recently met a woman who had her kids at 22 and 41. She’s 58 with a 17 year old. The fatigue just thinking about it hit me hard.
Mysterious_Carpet752@reddit
Uhhhh what is lightning crotch?! ⚡️🌩️⛈️
Otherwise_Weekend327@reddit
A really sharp, quick pain that jolts your vagina (or sometimes butthole) for no reason. I would just be standing there and get a zap. I've only experienced it while pregnant.
CTMechE@reddit
(male) but I went off antidepressants after 18+ years and started with the oft reported "brain zaps."
I've never heard of lightning crotch, but ... even if I could get pregnant, I think I'd take the brain zaps!
Mysterious_Carpet752@reddit
Oh my. Oh dear.
MermaidMertrid@reddit
Read this in Piglet’s voice.
Mysterious_Carpet752@reddit
LMAO.
AstralChrysanthemum@reddit
😆
TeutonJon78@reddit
Likely Jr pushing on your pudendal nerve from the inside.
AstralChrysanthemum@reddit
I’ve had this, too, while not pregnant, as have many women, apparently. Comments about it seem to attribute it to endometriosis, just fyi. I’ve never been diagnosed, but wouldn’t be surprised.
cashews_clay15@reddit
It likes to hit when you’re in public
minxwink@reddit
This gives me sm hope 🥲 ty for sharing this and about your friend. I’m 37 and in grad school and need to align with a partner when the time is right. Love to know that kiddos are still an option at 46 🫶
positiveblapshemy@reddit
This made me clench up and cross my legs. I'm 36 and can't imagine doing it again now. Women are incredible. Best wishes to the new mom and her little one.
SweetGrassGeranium@reddit
Oh my darling! How are you these days?
Turbulent-Agent9634@reddit
You're considering advanced at 35 because western medicine is inherently sexist. 35 is just fine.
cashews_clay15@reddit
I’m not “considering” it. It’s what it’s commonly called. I didn’t make it up 😂
Turbulent-Agent9634@reddit
Oh shit. You're a 1% commenter... no wonder you tried to use my spelling error as a way to ridicule me...
Turbulent-Agent9634@reddit
I know you didn't make it up. But it's not true, it stems from medical beliefs of the 1940s.
Turbulent-Agent9634@reddit
But 150,000,000 would cushion that ute a fanny load!
cashews_clay15@reddit
This is nonsensical you try hard
Turbulent-Agent9634@reddit
Okay boomer
ailish@reddit
Ahhh why did I read that? 😭
Muzoa@reddit
My sister went through something similar, and I remember it being a very difficult time for our family. I hope you live a long and healthy life 🙏🏽🖖
altiuscitiusfortius@reddit
But if you can afford to not work, to hire 24/7 nannies and housekeepers, i expect it's not much harder than being not pregnant at that age
Taskmaastricht@reddit
Meh. Not as much as being poor
GarranDrake@reddit
Absolutely, but that money HELPS. Assistants, chefs, nurses, medicines
YoungWrinkles@reddit
Yeah of course. But the wealth allowing for childcare, nannying and a chef will help I’m sure.
Fight_those_bastards@reddit
It does, but being fantastically wealthy definitely has its advantages. Like not having to worry about how much the hospital is going to bill you after insurance, for example.
FreshStartNoBan@reddit
BASED. Lol
Ok_Honey_2057@reddit
Star Wars money AND Marvel money.
NerdyTeacher77@reddit
So we both have 7th graders, huh?
Kimber85@reddit
I had twins at 40. Half the time we couldn’t get their naps synced so there was literally no way for me to get anything done around the house or even grab a cat nap. It was literal hell.
Now that they’re four months old it’s starting to get better. I only drink fourtcups of coffee a day instead of the entire pot, lol.
ScreenSensitive9148@reddit
I had my first at 44. We’re doing great!
Dashcamkitty@reddit
Yes I had my first at 41 and it's fine. I was far too immature to have had kids in my twenties!
SeeingPhrases@reddit
If I'm going to have kids it will be around your age. Were you able to do it naturally?
Mysterious_Rope_5642@reddit
I’m mid 30s dude and to think I could have had kids in my 20s terrifies me.
quaketoys@reddit
Saaame.
wes00mertes@reddit
When did you have your last?
LatroisSharkey@reddit
Same! Glad to see I’m not alone
moonshinedesignSD@reddit
Same with 34 & 38
carrieberry@reddit
I had one at 26. He 23. I'm still tired.
jollygoodwotwot@reddit
I think there's a bit of a correlation= causation bias going on sometimes with older mothers. We assume we wouldn't be tired if we were 10 years younger but most mothers are tired, period. I just wasn't tired at 27 because I didn't have a kid yet.
My husband once said I would have an easier time than my friends with pregnancy and childbirth because I was in such good shape. I was like, no, they would also be in great shape if they hadn't been raising kids for the last 5 years.
ketamineluv@reddit
I was nowhere near as tired parenting in my twenties as I have been in forties. I’ve joked “when we were younger we had the energy to play with our kids and no money and now we have the money to pay ppl with energy to play with our kids”. Like we obviously still play but nowhere near the stamina.
Mother_of_Kiddens@reddit
Do you still have mom brain? Mine are 5 and 2 and I’m convinced mom brain lasts until death.
carrieberry@reddit
It got marginally better but now I have menopause brain 😩
Wolf_Parade@reddit
I had no kids and am exhausted so hats off sister.
RalphMacchio404@reddit
My wife had one when she was 32 and me 35. Hes 11 now. We are still exhausted.
caramelcoldbrew@reddit
My last was at 36 and went from post partum right into perimenopause. Fuck being pregnant at 44.
NINeincheyelashes@reddit
Dudeee same…wtf
Mother_of_Kiddens@reddit
I’m 42 with a 2yo who is still breastfeeding. I haven’t had a period since she was born and I wonder daily if it’s prolactin or menopause.
Professional-Basis33@reddit
I have never crashed as hard as I did when I went from pregnant and breastfeeding hormones to perimenopausal. I was a weeping basket case.
caramelcoldbrew@reddit
Omg yes! I breastfed for nearly 5 years total between two kids back to back and only stopped because I broke my leg and put on narcotics. Stopping breastfeeding cold turkey was really hard on my hormones and really fucking hard for my baby. I’m still emotionally scarred from that time in my life.
Ischomachus@reddit
Yeah, that was rough. And then my thyroid went haywire for good measure.
Battle-Any@reddit
Oh, hey me!
Rogue_Gona@reddit
I'm wondering if this was an "oops" perimenopause baby for her 😬 I'm 43, in the throes of peri now, and I cannot even fathom having a child at this point. I can barely take care of myself lol.
_Sunshine_please_@reddit
I'm in my late 40s, and had some stomach issues a while back, the staff at the hospital did about 4 pregnancy tests despite me telling them I wouldn't be pregnant, and one of the staff members told me that she personally knows several people who've had natural surprise pregnancies in their early 50s. One even had two consecutive pregnancies in her early 50s. Apparently it happens more often than we may assume.
littlemuffinsparkles@reddit
Happened to my great grandmother! My great uncle was only two months older than my mother. 😬
neonblackiscool@reddit
What a nightmare B
_Sunshine_please_@reddit
Yes! Someone I knew years ago had unexpected twins post 50. Her youngest at the time was 18, and her husband was already a lot older. Such a shock.
Platt_Mallar@reddit
My daughter's bff is about 20 years younger than her siblings. Her parents are closer to my parents' age than mine. Hell, she has a niece who's only a year younger.
neonblackiscool@reddit
That seems like torture to me. How does her body even hold up?
_Sunshine_please_@reddit
They made a decision to change their whole lives and move closer to town, because she wasn't prepared to bring up two more children in the isolated situation that she had in the past (Australian outback basically). I met her when the twins were around ten, and she was pretty fit and strong then but I can't personally imagine the toll it would take on your body physically, and especially with twins!
highway9ueen@reddit
Oh that would be my fucking luck…
Sea-Significance8047@reddit
Started at 38 and would like to have 3 so gods willing I’ll be pregnant at 43. Everyone has a different timeline. Some of us wanted to do more life before having our kids.
Rogue_Gona@reddit
Oh for sure. And I know she's got kids with her ex. So it's not like she's been childless this whole time. Could've just as easily been her decision too. To each their own. I wish you the best of luck on your journey.
neonblackiscool@reddit
Good point. Highly likely.
neonblackiscool@reddit
Child free here but if you told me I had to be preggers at 43 while I’m sweating up the bed and crashing out from peri rage, it would end me. I only considered it briefly in late twenties.
freshpicked12@reddit
Same. Had my daughter at 39 and my hormones never recovered.
GlassAndStorm@reddit
OMG same
Phil_Beavers@reddit
38 when my kid was born two years ago. In my 40’s now and can confirm. I sleep wherever whenever. So tired, but love it. Glad we waited until we could afford it, but it has made us both feel our age for sure since we both work full time.
IdaDuck@reddit
We were also 36 when our youngest was born. She was a total surprise. Love her but we’re the old parents at her activities and events. She starts middle school this fall.
12Whiskey@reddit
We’re the same age. I had my youngest a few days after I turned 37 and she starts middle school in the fall as well. I’m waiting for someone at the school to assume I’m her grandma 😅
quietCherub@reddit
Oh geez, I’m waiting for that too. Right now, I’m young enough to not get too many looks, but I’m going way grey and not looking forward to other kids making fun of my daughter for the old momma. :( I’m 43 now and she’s 6.
charutobarato@reddit
I think this is kind of regional dependent maybe? Where we are most of the other elementary school parents are in their late 30s to mid 40s. I assume people focused on careers first, then came kids.
Kittypie75@reddit
First kid at 36 is pretty darn average where I live!
Golden_Enby@reddit
My little sister went through that. Mom had her had 38. Sister got picked on at school for having "old" parents.
danielleiellle@reddit
I feel like maybe baby Portman won’t primarily be known in school as the one with the old mom
cashews_clay15@reddit
Exactly! I’m pretty sure I’m older than his principal. And all of his friend’s parents are younger and I don’t feel like I fit in at almost 50.
DjNormal@reddit
My wife had her first kid at 36 and her second at 47. I have no idea how she’s still going.
casdoodle527@reddit
38 & 41 and I have my days where I’m absolutely exhausted, but testosterone cream has helped a ton
Mother_of_Kiddens@reddit
I had my second at 40. Now I’m 42 with a 2yo. SAVE MEEEEEE
barefootincozumel@reddit
I am a year younger than her and genuinely can’t imagine. I’m tired too. My baby will be 18 in a few months
HootingSloth@reddit
Felt this in my bones. We were both 38 when the second was born. Still dreaming of a day without exhaustion.
_lippykid@reddit
The trick is an army of nannys and boarding school
napalmnacey@reddit
I had my baby in January and I’m 46. It wasn’t easy but it was surprisingly straightforward.
VK56xterraguy@reddit
As a 44 or old as well and two kids already, no thanks.
Ok-Worldliness2161@reddit
That was my reaction too. I felt bad for her to be having one at that age. At least she’s rich though. I’m sure that helps
Hydrate-Luxuriate@reddit
I’m 44 with a 4 and 5 year old…..thanks Covid. I guess I’m tired like every other parent 🤷🏽♀️
Marduksmugshot@reddit
Last at 39 and I feel that. She has enough money to get help so there is that
morrisboris@reddit
I had my third at 33 and I’m so tired.
Muddy_Wafer@reddit
38 and he’s 5 now and I want to take a nap 100% of the time.
Acrobatic-Giraffe991@reddit
I’m sure she will have nanny’s lol but holy cow I’m 43 and there is no way I could do it all over again.
Pheeline@reddit
I had mine at 36 also and am also tired, lol. These days it's the perimenopause though.
Luckily for me, the pregnancy was actually super easy. I had gestational diabetes but that was easily controlled with a proper diet. No morning sickness, either.
We just have the one kid, also. I really didn't want to go through the infant and toddler stages again with another, lol. Our darling Chaos Gremlin, about to turn 11, is enough child for us. 😆
SeattleRainMaiden@reddit
I had my first at 34 and don't understand how people have energy for more than one bc I'm running on fumes all day every day.
grayandlizzie@reddit
I had one at 35. I'm 45 and she's 9 turning 10 this summer. I'm still tired. Can't even imagine having one at 44
ailish@reddit
Well, she has the money for several nannies and cleaning people. Also, people to cook for her and drive her places. She'll be fine.
Suitable_Wonder5256@reddit
Friend had one at 41.
Apparently, medicine these days are pretty advanced.
I imagine medicine for megamillionaires is even more advanced.
Ok_Stranger_9520@reddit
All of our friends had kids in their mid 30s, and let me tell you, they’re exhausted and never want to go on vacation now. Don’t blame them. I’m happy we had 30+ years of fun memories before hahaha and they’re all still close and we love their kids but it’s different now.
Far-Pie-6226@reddit
I snorted. Can relate
Human_Ad_2426@reddit
My first was at 38 that was pretty okay. It was my last kid at 42 that made me realize there's a world of difference.
Falafel80@reddit
I had one at 41 and I wish more people had talked about how exhausting it is at this age. All everyone talked about was that it’s harder to get pregnant and there are higher risks for certain issues.
Upvoteexpert@reddit
42 and I’m tired too!
Electrical-Scale5006@reddit
36 with a four year old, I don’t think I will never not be tired again. My bones creak when playing with my kiddo.

When I had my colonoscopy, they did a pregnancy test. The nurse was like “it’s negative” and I was like “it better be…”
PhoneJazz@reddit (OP)
Gotta love being in that narrow age window when a pregnancy test is required at your colonoscopy 😂
Pleasant_Fruit_144@reddit
Meanwhile, I went in for an IUD insertion a few months after having a baby. They did the procedure and I was like "um... shouldn't you have done a pregnancy test first" They looked stricken & were like "oh yeah, you're right" had me take one after. While I was in the bathroom doing it I heard the doctor yelling at the nurse that did the insertion 😬
KissingBear@reddit
NOT NARROW ENOUGH TBH
krankity-krab@reddit
my mom is late 60s, has been in menopause for well over a decade, and they still made her take a pregnancy test before her colonoscopy! (and charged her for it too, of course.. 😒)
EineGrosseFlasche@reddit
Well, you simply can’t take a woman’s word for something until she’s paid you twice! 😕
SatanicPanic619@reddit
My wife went in the morning for out patient surgery and had to take one. OK, fine, whatever. There were complications so we took her back to the hospital in the evening. They made her take another fucking pregnancy test.
_dead_and_broken@reddit
In 2007, when I moved to Florida, already pregnant, and I applied for medicaid, they made me take a pregnancy pee test at the medicaid office (not a doctor's office!) despite the fact I was 7 months along. You could clearly see that I was with child, I was very thin, and the belly was huuuugggeee. But they still insisted I take the stick test right then and there.
imnotohfuckingk@reddit
I had a freaking hysterectomy and they still made me take one because I had one ovary. Ummmmmm…
NoneOfThisMatters_XO@reddit
What?? Ok that’s insane.

Same. My oldest is almost 30.

I have one kid. We spent $$$ and time trying to have another. Unfortunately, it never happened. I’m her age. And if I got pregnant now, I would LOSE MY MIND. That ship has sailed, I’m content, I wouldn’t even remember what to do with a baby and would NEVER be able to fall back asleep again after midnight wakeups. Woof. Godspeed, lady
grayandlizzie@reddit
Same. I'm getting my IUD replaced in June. Going to keep it until menopause. My baby is almost 10 and I'm done

Dulcinea80@reddit
Same... Same...
KireekBlackhound@reddit
And thus I am reminded that me and my wife are almost her age and couldn't have kids. IVF has been a bitch. If you have any young millennial friends around the 35 year old mark, tell them to wake the fuck up and go have kids yesterday.
"Some people don't want kids". Fine, I'm not talking about them. I'm talking about all the fence sitters who deep down know they will want to but are essentially postponing it for a variety of, at the end of the day, stupid reasons. You CAN fix everything else "wrong in your life" later, at the same time as raising a child, or after they grow up and leave the house. You CANNOT unfuck your fertility after 38.
sounds_like_kong@reddit
I’m sorry, we tried for 7 years before we were lucky to have some success.
I will be offering to pay to have my girls eggs frozen for them when they hit college age.
KireekBlackhound@reddit
Don't "offer", tell them it's happening and "thank me later".
Oh and parents of boys? Same for sperm. Freeze that shit, guys can get into accidents or have fertility issues for a million different reasons.
There is literally no downside to this.
Kids ends up being 40 and telling you "see??? I didn't need that done!" either because they had kids naturally or they are still against having any, they ask for the material to be destroyed and nothing happens.
But if they end up in my situation, trying for years for one and failing, they will sure wish they had that failsafe.
FAYCSB@reddit
Tell them it’s happening? There is literally no downside? Have you done IVF?
KireekBlackhound@reddit
I was referring to the freezing of eggs or sperm as a safety measure in case of infertility in the future, for young adults. It is something that all parents should consider for their (young adult) kids.
IVF is not an easy process, guess what would make it easier.
Having your 20 year old DNA frozen.
And yes, if it wasn't clear, been doing IVF cycles with my wife for years.
FAYCSB@reddit
But you’ve not actually had to physically go through the process that is required to have your eggs harvested and frozen, correct?
KireekBlackhound@reddit
I watch my wife do it every time we do this shit. And I am sure she would appreciate if she had done it ONCE at 20 years old, and had a dozen healthy 20-year-old eggs than do it 5 times so far and get literal chromosomal anomaly riddled embryos galore, PRECISELY because the procedure is a burden to her body. You know what makes it a bigger burden? BEING OLDER WHEN YOU DO IT AND HAVING TO DO IT MULTIPLE TIMES. It also doesn't help that every failure fucks you up emotionally too.
You know how I know this?
She told me and tells me and yells it to herself crying every time we have another failed attempt. Get off the soapbox trying to "gotcha" me with the usual "no uterus no opinion" bullshit or the "you're not the one going through it" fuckery.
But yes, I am sure that taking hormones and having an anesthesia once when you're 20 would be a MUCH HARSHER EXPERIENCE for someone. Get fucked.
FAYCSB@reddit
For the majority of people, they would go through all that effort—for nothing. I’m very happy I don’t freeze my eggs, because it would have been for wasted effort, time, money, discomfort, etc. Because I don’t need IVF. Of course in hindsight she wishes she did it earlier. That doesn’t make it nothing. That doesn’t mean there’s no downsides.
sounds_like_kong@reddit
Weird take. Here is the truth, waiting even until your 30s results in a much more likely chance you’ll be dealing with egg quality issues or PCOS. you are right, 80% of people probably won’t have an issue but, as a parent, I would gladly pay the $15-$20k or whatever it is now to say to my kids, “go experience life, get that amazing job or whatever it is you want, if you you find love later in life and decide you want a kid, here are some high quality eggs from when you were young in case you have trouble conceiving”.
FAYCSB@reddit
There’s nothing wrong with that kind of offer! What I don’t agree with is pretending it’s a walk in the park and that there are NO downsides to pumping your body with hormones or the idea that it’s appropriate for a parent to tell their young adult/adult child that they’re going to do it.
KireekBlackhound@reddit
Ah yes, the true to life "I never needed my car insurance policy, so insurance is a scam" bullshit. Life will inevitably prove you wrong about this way of thinking eventually, and you WILL wish you prepared better. But hey, who am I to talk. Have a good day.
Roni_Pony@reddit
Sorry it sucked for you. I did 2 fresh rounds and a frozen transfer in my 40s. I know exactly what it is.
Roni_Pony@reddit
Clearly. He's suggesting 90% of the IVF effort. I'm not sure how doing it at a younger age would be easier unless he means a greater chance of viable eggs. And maybe more of them in a single round? Don't know. Regardless, good luck convincing a 20 year old that this is a good idea.
FAYCSB@reddit
He’s not going to convince them. It’s not an offer, he’s telling them it’s happening.
Glasseshalf@reddit
Tell them it's happening and thank me later? Ew.
KireekBlackhound@reddit
Because having your genetic material for your own future use or discarding it if you decide you don't need it is very bad for you right? I'm sure it violated your right to... bodily autonomy or some other shit, yes? Imagine being so far up your own ass you can't even see first hand experience (and regret) advice for what it is.
RanaEire@reddit
Never thought about this... Food for thought!
Thanks!
highway9ueen@reddit
Didn’t meet my husband til late, and wasn’t able to have kids. Managed to get pregnant once and lost it.
KireekBlackhound@reddit
I'm... I'm so sorry for your loss. We never even got that far, every batch of embryos so far was tested with severe chromosomal anomalies so we haven't even gotten to the point of getting one transfered... and yet every time we are devastated hearing that essentially none of them made it...
I can't even imagine what it would be like to get to a pregnancy and then a miscarriage...
God, that is so cruel... I am so sorry...
highway9ueen@reddit
I’m sorry for all of your struggles as well! My embryo I lost was tested (I had a missed miscarriage, then d&c) and had major chromosomal issues as well.
KireekBlackhound@reddit
If this isn't too personal a question... how are you guys coping? I feel like me and my wife should give up, but she's really not ready to...
On the one hand I really want a kid as well, on the other, I see what this is doing to her and I don't want her to keep experiencing it..
I guess my question is, have you guys moved on?
Is that even possible?
snn1326j@reddit
I’m sorry, that’s so hard. I was one of the first wave of egg freezers about 15 years ago and was very lucky I didn’t need to use mine. I read that Natalie Portman’s dad was a fertility doctor so I wouldn’t be surprised if she froze her eggs at some point, especially once she learned her ex husband was cheating. Having a baby at 44 without intervention is not impossible, but I would say uncommon.
Roni_Pony@reddit
Here's the comment that makes everything click. My fertility doc said their protocol is to suggest the use of a donor egg after 42 (if I'm remembering correctly), so having eggs on ice just makes so much sense.
LeftHandStir@reddit
Yup. I got sober, got an MBA, and bought a house all after my kid was born. My wife was 36 when we got married, and we were like it's now or never.
thumbtackswordsman@reddit
Well your kid is very very lucky that you got sober, and so is your wife. However I would never advise anyone that is not sober or who is with a partner that is not sober, to have kids, because 90% of the time this doesn't end well.
LeftHandStir@reddit
Sure. But life doesn't work that way. I'd been gainfully employed my entire adult life, earned over $60k in 2015 dollars ($84k in today's money), and I was functionally alcoholic in a country that really accepts that. Do I wish that I could've done everything I did in my late thirties in my late twenties instead? Of course I do. But that wasn't my path.
thumbtackswordsman@reddit
Good for you, and I hope that you know how exceptional what you did it is. So the exception affirms the rule. I'm just saying that this is a huge gamble for a woman, and therefore is not something I'd generally recommend. A lot of men go from functioning to not functioning alcoholism, there is a very thin line between the two.
LeftHandStir@reddit
No doubt, and I appreciate your kind words as well!
KireekBlackhound@reddit
Oh how I wish I had someone give me my own advice at that age. Just a couple of years can make a huge difference.

Been in perimenopause for awhile, and cycles finally completely stopped 6 months ago. Its a no for me as well. Congrats for her though :)
Topwingwoman2@reddit
So jealous. I'm 45, and they are consistent each month. My mom had full cycles until age 58, and then they suddenly stopped. I'm ready to be done with this shit.
Falafel80@reddit
Don’t be. Perimenopause sucks and it ages you like crazy. Maybe it will get better once I hit actual menopause.
Topwingwoman2@reddit
My mom lucked out. She has gained no weight and has been within 5 lbs of her original weight since marriage (healthy BMI). She looks amazing. I'm lucky not to have wrinkles or gray hair yet, but after being healthy my whole life, I became obese about 6 years ago due to mental health, alcoholism, etc. I'm better now in terms of mental health, but trying to get the weight off sucks. I'm surprised my system has been so regular considering the abuse I've put it through. Everything is relative based on individual experience.
Falafel80@reddit
Well, what I mean is that in general loss of hormones tend to age people faster not just aesthetically and the body can take a toll but of course there’s variation among people. Hormones are used for a variety of processes in the body though. Did you know that perimenopause makes women’s cardiovascular risk increase to match men’s? And hormone replacement therapy doesn’t decrease the risk? Our mother’s generation weren’t even aware of all that perimenopause/menopause encompasses because it wasn’t researched or talked about.
Maybe I am wrong but I think going through menopause later in life is an advantage because it keeps your body running smoothly longer. But hey, if you want to become menopausal soon, I will cross my fingers for you!
BrewCityTikiGuy@reddit
My wife too. She has zero signs of perimenopause to my knowledge and she’ll be 50 this year.
Topwingwoman2@reddit
I don't have physical signs, but definitely have emotional volatility, but I've struggled with that my whole life. But, I've read so many hell posts about peri that it scares the shit out of me.
neonblackiscool@reddit
You don’t want these symptoms! Keep the period regular until you can’t.
Topwingwoman2@reddit
I know. But it has changed somewhat and is annoying as hell. I'm sure I have some of the emotional aspects of it all (and I'm a high-stressed person to begin with, I am a Drama Queen, which I hate).
_Sunshine_please_@reddit
My mother was also have regular cycles throughout her 50s, and I'm showing no signs of either a pause or stopping (in my late 40s). Fun times.
Ill-Percentage-3276@reddit
Same. I just turned 46 and my mom didn't hit menopause until she was like 55. I'd like everything just taken out at this point lol
Topwingwoman2@reddit
I think that brings its own set of problems though. I shouldn't complain about the alternative. My older sister (who just turned 47 this month) has Stage IV breast cancer, so her meds made her go through premature menopause. All the side effects with that look miserable, too. I feel we are damned if we do, damned if we don't lol.
sinisterfaceofwoke@reddit
Be careful with unprotected sex. I met a woman who became a mum at 55 last year. She thought she was fully done with her periods and it was too late by the time she realised. She looked knackered.

Anemones_In__Spades@reddit
My mom had no peri symptoms. The only side effects of menopause she's had arethr occasional hot flash and rogue chin hair. Prior to those, she always had easy periods and NO PMS!!
She has never been encumbered by hormones, and I envy her for it.
Meanwhile I'm finding out my PMDD is getting so much worse in peri. 😒
Rogue_Gona@reddit
I only found out after I pretty much had a mental break with reality caused by my worsening anxiety, that my mom suffered from the same thing during her perimenopause.
Gee, thanks Mom, it would've been nice to know that this phase of life worsens our already terrible (and shared) general anxiety disorder and panic disorder. Cool cool 🫠
neonblackiscool@reddit

gummi-demilo@reddit
My mom credited having my brother at 38 with staving off her peri another six or seven years, but that meant she later had a kindergartner and a college student at the same time who learned to walk on eggshells around her
ManateeNipples@reddit
Yeah we didn't know about peri in my house so it was like an epiphany when I learned about it as an adult, it made my mom and her stories about her mom all make a lot more sense
Gorkymalorki@reddit
I am same age as her, I have a 10, 11, and 23 year old. I can't imagine having a newborn at this age. The kids I have all are the perfect age for me right now. They like to have fun, but they are also pretty independent.

GoldenWaterfallFleur@reddit

Gorkymalorki@reddit
I am not judging her. She lives a completely different life than I do. She obviously thinks she is at a good age to have a kid. I am just saying that I wouldn't be able to at 44, but I also do not have millions of dollars to hire help. I am trying to wind down my life at this point. She is at a different point in her life.
Dramatic_Prior_9298@reddit
I'm not reading judgement of her, just people saying they wouldn't want to do it themselves. Different things.
ScreenSensitive9148@reddit

My people! 1982 here myself. One kid at 38 and one at 42. That last one I had to have iron transfusions and a CPAP machine. It was wild.
clutzycook@reddit
My biggest challenge this time was the insomnia in my third trimester. A good night was 4 hours of sleep. The night before my C-section, I only slept for about an hour. I had some sort of panic attack when they were prepping me and I can't rule out that they gave me some sedative because I zonked out as soon as they laid me down on the table and didn't know anything until I heard my daughter cry. She was a bit gurgly and my first thought was "someone had better suction that kid", until I remembered where I was and that was my kid, lol.
Particular-Crew5978@reddit
Sleep who sister?! So I was averaging about that much because according to my sleep doctor, I was having 143 events a night. Didn't get a CPAP until the eighth month. I had a sleep test with the first kid and they said I was fine. My doctor truly questioned that. Both births were traumatic. I can spare you, but last one I was in surgery four hours. They managed to save my uterus? At 42 they could've put it on display lol. My husband's snipped so I'm retired from making people.

That said, the little dude is the best thing to ever come from me or happen to me. It's crazy how your perspective changes when you have a kid. I know some people think it's offensive to say, but I really do think it's impossible to love someone/something on this level without having a child.

Metallifan33@reddit
Any advice besides getting in shape? That part is easy as I like running/cycling etc. also, I’m the guy 😉
SheRidesAMadHorse@reddit
It's fine - I had mine at 41 and my partner was 45. Our kiddo is five now and I'm coaching her first softball practice tomorrow. We're tired but not that tired.
carlitospig@reddit
Lol I totally misread this and thought you got a surrogate.
Oh my goodness, make sure you get the pregnancy body pillow. They’re great even if you’re not the pregnant one! 🥰😂
Metallifan33@reddit
No. We tried to have a kid a few years ago and lost the baby unfortunately and believe it or not, my wife got cancer as a result. A year with of chemo and another to recover from it all and we just want to give it one more try before giving up. Didn’t want to adopt, so using a donor egg and my wife will carry it.
ritarepulsaqueen@reddit
I'm sorry, hoe didd you your wife get cancer from the pregnancy?
Metallifan33@reddit
It was a molar pregnancy. Once we realized that the pregnancy was not viable, we wanted them to do a DNC, but due to abortion changes and us living in AZ, the doctors decided we should wait for a miscarriage (which never happened). Eventually we had the procedure done, but some cells from the fetus were left behind. Those cells metastasized and went into my wife’s lungs. It took a year of chemotherapy to get back to normal. The good news is, it is a curable cancer and she isn’t in remission.
carlitospig@reddit
Oh, my loves. I wish you the STRONGEST of implantation!!

MeetMeAtTheLampPost@reddit
I work in L&D, 45 is not that uncommon anymore. Sending you happy healthy pregnancy and baby vibes!
Metallifan33@reddit
Yeah… my wife and I made the mistake of “waiting till we were ready” (finish school, buy a house, etc. etc.) and we were 35 by the time we were able to have our first (and only child). We tried again for a second and it was unsuccessful. We don’t want to leave our only child by herself as an adult, so we are trying again. But I tell all the young people now, don’t wait!! Your body is made to have kids at 18 to 22… and it doesn’t care what the economy is doing.
ritarepulsaqueen@reddit
People should absolutely wait, having a kid by 22 realy increases the risk of a lifetime in poverty.
Metallifan33@reddit
Eh… all the people I know that had kids in their 20s while living in apartments are doing just fine today. My wife on the other hand almost died from a molar pregnancy and subsequent cancer at 38.

My mom had my youngest sister at 44 when my sister and I were 13 and 17.. (thought it was menopause… NOPE!) Baby Grace is now 25 and is a rockstar (well, PA-C… same thing in my opinion!) here’s to hoping!
Metallifan33@reddit
PA-C? Yeah, it’s scary, but it’s our last chance, and wanted to give it a go.

I'm more intrigued by the fact that she uses a Pixel phone. It's rare to see a celebrity use anything other than an iPhone.
SeaVolume3325@reddit
Looks like a Pixel 10 Pro (the current gen). I have the Pixel 10 Pro XL. I've had Google phones since 2012 with the Nexus 4. I would never have an iPhone and I'm American. But I'm also tech literate and work in the space unlike most Americans. Hence the uniquely American Apple fan club...
To be fair, Pixel has upped their marketing and if you look closely many American shows feature them on HBO or if it's Marvel. It's the official phone of the NBA/WNBA. I mean it's Google and now with Gemini\AI they are objectively lapping Apple in what's "hot". She should do a deal lol.
fuelvolts@reddit
Well, I use Macs and have all Apple house with iPads, Apple TVs, AirPods, etc. I’m in deep. But man they just all work so well together. Seamlessly using my AirPods with all my devices is so so nice.
I was Android guy too with Nexus and Pixel devices. Switched to Apple in 2020. Tried using a Pixel 10 Pro last fall and using an Android device in an all Apple house sucks. I guess that’s their goal but sure whatever.

All 7 of my aunts lived past 95 years of age. My mom is 72 and she looks 50. Not only is this inaccurate, it's a very mean and inconsiderate thing to say to someone.
Beginning-Life949@reddit
How long do the people in your family live? Ours lives well into their 90s. I don’t think anyone has passed younger than 85-88. Not everyone’s genetics is the same
therealraggedroses@reddit

therealraggedroses@reddit
How am I being a jerk? Just stating an actual fact? If you have kids when youre older youre going to be out of their lives sooner.
Thistooshallpass1_1@reddit
People consider everything before they have kids. This is even more true for older parents. The person you were speaking to certainly gave a LOT of thought to their age. They don’t need you to point it out.
You’re being an ass. So shut up.
made_in_bklyn_@reddit
I agree 100%. Had my daughter at 38 years old. If I started 10 years younger my child wouldn't have the life I'm able to now give her (not just financially, but also in terms of my own growth and mental health).
I'm 42 now, back into my career, my hobbies l,.and time with my friends. If you can swing it, I think having kids when you're older is the way to go.
stilettopanda@reddit
Daily fatigue and chronic pain got so much worse one I was on the downslope to 40. I can’t imagine being able to handle a newborn now. I had my kids from 28-33 and it worked well for me. Not too young (for me) and not too old. (for me)
auwtism@reddit
Except you'll be 63 when they're 18 and 75 when they're 30, so you won't be able to spend as much time with them.
rvasko3@reddit
Guess what? You can have your kids at 16, and there’s no guarantee you won’t die the next year. We only get what we get, that’s why the quality of the time matters more than the quantity.
rramona@reddit
Comments like these give me hope! I'm about to enter my 30s but due to a lot of trauma work I'm just not ready yet, nor in a stable situation financially and otherwise. And will likely not be for a while yet. It feels good to remind myself that there's no rush.
Past_Painter5707@reddit
Incredibly irresponsible. You'll be 63 when the last one turns 18. You'll be 70 before they are 30 that is insane. You've robbed them of their adult years to take care of their grand"parent" because you wanted to wait. That is if they don't have some sort of intellectual disorder from being a product of a geriatric pregnancy.
KimWexlerDeGuzman@reddit

40 when I gave birth to my first and if we try for a second, it will be within the next year when I’m 42-43. I love being an “old” parent.
Cimorene_Kazul@reddit
If I can give some advice as an adult child of parents who had me at older ages…be careful with your wills and directives. They were taken advantage of by bad lawyers and it’s left us in a real mess at a young age after both parents fell ill simultaneously. Update your wills often and make sure there’s someone to help your kids when they need them if you cannot.
Educational_Exam_225@reddit
I'm not sure any of this actually has to do with being an older parent, just general purpose good advice combined with some unfortunate luck. These days there's not that much functionally different from 50 and 60, and everyone should have their wills and directives sorted out once they become a parent. A single car crash can wipe both parents out.
Cimorene_Kazul@reddit
Yes, but in our case, my parents didn’t rewrite the will for when we were adults. It currently still treats us like children, and it’s caused a ton of grief.

YOMAMACAN@reddit
Yeah I was having kids in my late 30s early 40s. My only apprehension would be the age gap. My youngest is in 1st and I would not want to restart the baby clock. But that’s less about my age and more about the phase I am with the kids now.
Plays_On_TrainTracks@reddit
The key is to have kids when you're young and have no money and healthcare. See your early 20s when you dont have a career really going yet and you can barely afford rent and you need to rely on your parents to help raise your child because thats an option for everyone. Or atleast thats what people told me my whole life.

Yep, mine are similar ages. Not thinking babies at all. If anything, grandbabies.
DieAloneWith72Cats@reddit
We just became grandparents again. My oldest (28) has a 5 year old boy, he and wife just had a daughter in February.
The grandparent thing is nice because we can have the kids visit, then once we get tired it’s time for them to go home.
It’s very interesting to see the type of parenting your children engage in. For me, it was healing, we broke the cycle for sure. I am proud of the job we did as parents, but also deeply angry that my parents couldn’t be bothered to do better.
Side note: We wanted the oldest grandchild to choose a name for us, we didn’t want to force a name. I ended up “Bobby”, my husband is “Bappy.” Our grandson didn’t know what to call us and knew we were his “buddy” but he couldn’t remember the exact word. I absolutely LOVE my grandma name ❤️

I’m 46 and had a baby in January. It was an “oops” baby, but my husband and I had the resources to keep the pregnancy. It’s been so great and I am cherishing every moment. I was going through a lot of grief from my older children not being babies anymore and my bay years being behind me. Honestly thought I would never get this chance.
I love my new bubby soooo much. So do the kids. I wish Natalie Portman all the best.
theMightBoop@reddit
This must be a lie because there is no way she is 44 because that would mean I am even older.

Therealjimslim@reddit
I am (1983). I’m a late bloomer and really healthy and fit, go to Pilates 5 times a week, no body pain whatsoever and not in perimenopause. I had to work a lot on myself before I felt emotionally capable of taking care of a little human being. I am planning to start trying to have a baby when I am 46, so in 2 years. I’m a very positive and optimistic person and I think that’s manifested in my health and how I present. I am not “tired” like many people my age. Probably because I don’t have kids yet and I take care of my physical and mental health, I have the resources and time to do so. I am giving myself 2 years to find a stable partner who wants to do this with me, or I will use a close friend as a sperm donor.
FAYCSB@reddit
Have you had any testing done? It took me 4 years to have my last kid at 41. The fertility drop off is real.
Therealjimslim@reddit
Yes, everything checked out to be healthy and fertile enough. Of course they warned me about waiting. I’ve been routinely checking since I was 36. So I am not worried about it. Manifesting as well which seems to always work in my favor.

Going to be contrarian here… heck yes girl!
Had my last child at 43. She is almost 2. My wife’s co-worker gave birth a few months ago at age 44, she turns 45 in May.
I have no concept of what it is like to have a child in my 20’s (and nearly all of my 30’s). But I support each and every person who wants to become a parent.
My neighbor 3 doors down became a first time dad at 46, then had another at 49…..
Venetian_chachi@reddit
I’d drink a gallon of her pee just kiss where it came from.
I hope her pregnancy goes smoothly.
kathatter75@reddit
My ex told me that he realized he wanted to have kids when I was 41 and he was 45. We had other issues, but that was the decider. I was not going to have or adopt a child at that age. I never wanted kids, and I especially didn’t want them in my 40s.
So, we got divorced…and, at the age of 50, he adopted a newborn with his new wife. My mom and I laughed and laughed when he told her that he’d handle a crying baby by “getting her on a schedule.”
Anemones_In__Spades@reddit
Whoa plot twist - expected the new wife to be young and having the kids.

I’m 44 with one. I wish I had had 2 more years ago. But as much as I’d like more the answer is a hell no. I don’t want minor children at home in my 60’s
NachoSerf@reddit
My ex embezzled a bunch of money from his businesses to pay for his 47 year old mistress’s IVF. They’re now complaining about how they didn’t understand this meant they won’t be able to retire at 55 as they planned. And I’m just all…
Material-Strength-92@reddit
Also 44 with one. My only is about to turn 8. I wish I had another one at 39. Couldn’t imagine doing it now. My sister just had her 2nd at 42.
Inevitable_Pride1925@reddit
In many ways I’m single and the challenges of managing pregnancy without a partner are so significant. I was telling my sister that if it was easier I might have made a massive mistake. My daughter has reached that age where she just doesn’t need me as much and my phone is constantly giving me the little baby reminders.
I miss having her on my hip so much. At the same time I vaguely remember just need space and breathing room. Memories are weird…

Congrats to her but speaking as someone who had their kids "late" in the traditional sense (i.e mid-30s) all the luck and good vibes in the world passed over to her. Kids are for young folks. No way I could do that all over again. Nor would I want to.
rustyoldlemon@reddit
Just because you have a hard time with young children at that age doesn't mean everyone does. Speaking as someone who has had babies at 34 and 41, I love it and wouldn't mind having a third now that I am 43.
Mudcreek47@reddit
Never said I had a hard time, but biologically speaking there is a huge difference in energy levels mid/late 40s than there are at mid/late 20s or mid/late 30s. It's just biology.

Oof. 38 was hard enough over here. Although according to a TV show I saw they call it “advanced maternal age” now instead of “geriatric pregnancy”. Fuck those people it made me feel so shitty
Ut_Prosim@reddit
Somewhere between 38-45 your body stops producing viable eggs. However, if you had frozen eggs saved from before (or donor eggs) you could get pregnant later.
The clinic near me said they had one patient produce a viable embryo at 47, but that was the first time any of the doctors had seen that in their entire careers. Usually early 40s is the limit. IIRC the kid is a healthy two year old now, no issues.
Pregnancy is totally different than egg production. You can carry a baby at a much older age. The clinic near me has an age cutoff of 53 for embryo transfers. Any pregnancy after 35 is high risk, but in terms of carrying the pregnancy 40 and 50 are only marginally different.
No menopause isn't a big issue as the placenta produces the hormones needed. A post menopausal woman would need a few weeks of hormones before and after the transfer, but once established the pregnancy would be self-sustaining. The clinic had some patients who lost ovaries and they claimed that was no problem so long as they had some good eggs frozen.
You almost never see pregnant women in their late 40s or 50s because of the egg issue, but with frozen or donor eggs it is possible even later.

Isn’t that completely unsafe?

It used to be but proactive prenatal care has come a long way.

Slightly increased.

Higher chance of birth defects and autism, Lower if you've had kids previously, higher if dad is older.... So many factors in play here.
Mostly I'm 43 this year, my youngest is 10, I wouldn't want to have a baby in another year or two. That's just a no from me. My youngest will be 18 when I'm 50, and I couldn't be happier with that.

I mean maybe. More instances of twins and certain chromosomal stuff like Down's Syndrome. I would also say an older body may have physical issues as well.

Completely unsafe? No. Risks are greater, but still the majority of pregnancies after 40 are still uncomplicated

She’s rich, she has the best health care, she’s probably safer than a low-income woman in her 20s.
