I remember England being like that and have fond memories of going to family mass on a Sunday morning in our best clothes, then going to visit grandparents, going home to have a traditional Sunday dinner with the family all sat around the table and then we'd play games before having a bath ready for school the next day. Many mums back then didn't have to work and could look after their home and familyy, do the shopping etc (if that's what they wanted to do). Unfortunately people cant afford to do that now. I spend sundays doing laundry, cleaning, food shopping, ironing....

What’s the worst place you have ever been on holiday?

Been to Egypt. Naama Bay is pretty much made for tourists and I liked it. But I would never go back. The men were appalling. They wouldnt leave me alone. The management seemed quite happy for them to be complete creeps so they don't hold back. I didn't even feel safe going to the bathrooms as the make cleaner stood outside my cubicle door waiting for me to come out. They're like dogs on heat. No respect whatsoever. Meanwhile their wives are back home for weeks while they are away working and treating tourist women like pieces of meat. Awful. Don't go.

Should I change my name on my CV or am I overthinking?

I work for the NHS (admin) and have seen the opposite. They seem so keen to show diversity that most new staff seem to be from an ethnic minority. However, I do wonder how some people got those jobs because they are clearly incapable and some barely speak English. They don't want to integrate or even speak to colleagues. One girl just sits in her coat scrolling through her phone and doesn't even say 'hello'. Before everyone jumps on me, no, this isn't everyone. And yes, we have tried to speak and be nice. I personally don't care where a co-worker comes from but I do wonder if some managers are putting diversity before capability? (For info, the scrolling lady in her coat was given the job over a very capable person in a lower band job). It is undeniable what we are seeing and mistakes are being met with 'aw, she's new. I don't want to look like I'm being mean' by team leaders. I've tried to help these ladies but for one reason or another I'm not having success. I don't actually know how they got through the interview. In the NHS, mistakes can lead to serious consequences for the patient. Has anyone else witnessed this?

Will my NHS employed partner be able to see a termination on my medical records?

Is he a GP or at a hospital? Hospitals have their own systems and records only. Only your GP has the full collection of records from different medical locations. Unless you tell some during treatment at his hospital then it wont be on your records there anyway

Ordered crumpets-are they supposed to taste like this?

That's definitely not a crumpet if it crumbles. They're not like an English muffin either. They don't have a bread consistency. We have them with lots of different toppings, butter, cheese, jam, chocolate spread, even icecream!

How do you manage the logistics of laundry without a dryer?

I'll be honest, it's a nightmare. I live in the north of England and we have so much rain. You can't hang washing outside oct-april (approximately) and even in the other months we can have cold, wet days. Our summer weather is not guaranteed at all. When it is warm and sunny I wash EVERYTHING!!! The rest of the time washing is on the radiaters, hung up everywhere and on airers. A dehumidifier helps. Dryers are so expensive to run due to ridiculous electricity costs. Gas is expensive too but at least using the central heating warms the house while it's drying the washing. When you have kids who's school uniform includes white shirts, they need a fresh one daily! They are forever hung up drying!

I got a non-related job after my degree bc I couldn't find one in law. I worked hard and applied for higher jobs and ended up with a great career. You are more employable if you are employed. In any job. Then you can think about your life direction. Lesser skilled roles can also lead to making more friends if it's in a group environment like retail. You'll feel happier, learn skills and have more confidence. Think of it as a first step rather than a backwards one. As an employer I would be happier interviewing a graduate who cleaned toilets than one who does nothing. One shows a strong work ethic, adaptability and commitment. The other.....

Do you think racism exists on the level of romantic relationship in the UK in 2025?

Posted by GreySofa1234@reddit | AskABrit | View on Reddit | 56 comments

xxbtmxx@reddit

I think it works both ways to be honest. I know everyone thinks that white folk are immune from racism. Or its ok and acceptable to discriminate against white people because in England they aren't a minority but we can still experience it as an individual. I don't have a type and have dated people who look nothing alike. I once fell for a lovely man who was black. We were really happy together, however his family were not! He was constantly told to find a nice girl of his own colour. They looked at me like dirt. Other black girls gave us abuse too. Told me to leave their men alone and stick to my own kind. I went to uni with a Muslim guy who told me his family would disown him if he had a white girlfriend or wife.

I was once Myrrh! As in gold, frankincense and myrrh....I don't even know what Myrrh looks like. I just had to wear a hessian sack! Obviously no lines or solo songs!!! A shepherd is way better than that. Maybe the boy shepherds need a girl shepherd to organise them? Weird decision by the teacher though.

It depends where you live, as people are saying. I think if you can afford to live somewhere nice, in the countryside, somewhere that has retained it's English identity, avoid reading the news, stay off social media and tell yourself it will all be ok, then move back. Otherwise it's depressing. Political unrest, high cost of living, housing crisis, protests every weekend, battles of which flags can be flown, high threat of terrorist attacks, a divided society, out of control teens, drugs, businesses and shops closing on a daily basis, useless PM, collapsing NHS. Oh and lets not forget the weather! It's so sad 😔

Is it common for British school children misbehave in public?

Posted by Relative-Character-4@reddit | AskABrit | View on Reddit | 390 comments

xxbtmxx@reddit

I'm british and proud to be british but our teens are bloody horrible. Obviously not all of them. The lack of manners, the language, the disrespect are all shocking. I keep my daughter on a pretty short leash when it comes to things like that. Other parents and teachers always comment on how polite she is and how lovely her manners are and I'm not smug about it because its nothing more than every teen should act. What I do think is that its very sad that she stands out for having manners and respect. The fact that it's a rarity and unusual enough to be commented on really saddens me. We have a great relationship but she knows if anyone ever told me that she'd been rude or mean then there would be big consequences. It reflects on me and I wouldn't stand for it. No rose-tinted glasses on me. Please don't let them upset you. Its not personal, they're just horrible teens. The joke will be on them when they poke fun at the wrong person.
