Who actually buys e85 fuel?

Posted by nicerakc@reddit | cars | View on Reddit | 309 comments

I have a 7.3 Godzillia in a 2023 40ft Toy Hauler Motorhome and it does NOT take E85, I’d love to use it as the beast could use more HP on hills especially. I could use Premium but when you fill up an 80 gallon tank that $1 extra per gallon really bites.

Non-Stop is specifically qualified in the Cannonball rules to exclude anything but SHORT fuel stops. If you can get food while fueling then cool if not you are going to be hungry. The Tesla recharge stops clearly violate the terms and sprit of the rules.

You have to refuel that’s a given but it’s pit stop just a few minutes not a long stop of several hours. Pit stops are OK by the Cannonball rules. But every one of them is quick as possible. Driver changes means pulling over to the side and 15 seconds later rolling with a new driver.

I disagree, it depends on battery depletion vs speed. If it is linear aka 120 mph for an hour on a charge vs 2 hours at 60 then by the time the slower car gets there the faster car has charged and it making miles while the slow car charges. So in 3 hours the faster can has gone 240 miles and the slower can 120. If you can figure out the perfect spot when the time and depletion are optimal then you set the cruise at that speed and take a nap. Of course you also have to plan stops at SuperCharger locations so that screws with the optimal calculations. Hammer down as hard as you can is the Cannonball idea,so having to stop at specific spots to charge you really cannot do that. A lot of the Cannonball cars were modified with huge gas tanks so only 2-3 fill ups were needed.

He shows a tax loss as small CASH basis landscape businesses on Schedule C which offsets a lot of the taxes from his day job. Next year he has less taxes withheld at the day job and has great cash flow. So he can work hard AND smart both.

How about giving all the Wrangler 4Xe’s either a newer better battery or buying the lemons back? It’s insane to patch battery design issues with software that will just detect the problem, brick the vehicle and say install a new battery which is the exact same battery as just failed!!!!

Stellantis Is Spamming Owners' Screens With Pop-Up Ads for New Car Discounts

Maybe my Jeep is too old (2022) but I’ve not seen a single ad on my screen. Then again I don’t have any of the Jeep subscriptions activated either nor do I buy map updates (Car Play + Google/Apple Maps are much more current). Maybe that’s why? I got the same “extra $1500 discount” via email yesterday.

I think it’s Stellantis lawyers over reacting to a far far less than 1% chance of this happening. But the pushback from owners is brutal, a lot of others are going to be jumping into private lawsuits, I was already contacted by a firm. Yes there are probably measurements that will tell something is going wrong, the last software fix found my bad battery and it was a 2+ month replacement cycle. Fortunately I was able to get a paid for rental. But unless they come up with a new battery design the problem never goes away it’s inherently in the design of the ONLY battery they make for the 4XE. And with no new production coming I don’t see Stellantis spinning up a new design and manufacturing costing millions and a year plus of time. I think they just need to do a buyback and write it off perhaps some litigation with Samsung to recover some of the costs.

4xe issue fix will be just like before, a software update to “detect the problem”. I don’t see how they can detect a bad separator with software and if the cells start touching and arcing a CEL might just be followed by a Fire. I just got a new battery in mine and it’s recalled now. WTF, you put a bad battery in as a replacement for a bad battery? my 4XE Jeep part has had only 2 issues in 37K miles a steering rack went out and a bad 12V battery, Both known issues. Had about the same number of problems per miles as my Subaru has had. I wish I had bought the gas model even though I’ve gotten GREAT mileage on the 4XE just running local errands.

LOL!! Is he going to put in a GPU(s) to process the data (what data is that?) into something meaningful? Or is it going to need to be Internet connected to do the processing elsewhere? You don’t need an AI to tell you that you are about to run out of gas or something is wrong, we have these things called gauges and idiot lights for that. Is Ford collecting and analyzing data on your driving habits to sell to your insurance company to “pay” for the costs of the AI??

Yep, we are a car and plane nation. In the NE trains work pretty good but not anywhere else, distances are too large as well as the fact tracks are shared with freight trains which get priority which makes them slow. I can’t figure out why it’s more expensive than flying however.

I have an L2 home charger that runs on 50A single phase 240V, three phase to the home is not common in the USA. You would need a transformer for each phase on the pole (or ground enclosure) and a different panel and meter. It’s just not practical in the USA.

600 KwH is 600,000 W is 804.6131 HP per Google..Translate 600kwh into watts then watts to HP. That’s the stored power that technically could be used but how much over how long will determine the mileage. As someone who owns an hybrid Jeep 4xe if I run on battery only and drive 90 I might get 10 miles vs driving 50 and getting 25 miles. Of course I drive a brick so other factors come into play as well on determining mileage. I’ve not seen how EV and battery mfgs translate battery capacity into miles per charge.

that 7.2MW is equal to 9655 HP now lets see them get that power to the ground. Not to mention the electric delivery system to the charger would likely need to be 3 phase and the charger is basically a transformer in your back yard. Far too dangerous for real world use in auto.

Honda Asks Nissan to Become Subsidiary

What makes Honda think Nissan CAN be turned around? A top to bottom purge of management and a lot of investment would be needed plus likely 5-7 years of time. Does this makes business sense or is the Japanese Government asking Honda to step in and save face of a major Japanese brand going out of business? It’s more complicated that it seems.

what actually happens to a car if you put diesel in a gas tank or vice versa?

Posted by Timely_Run_2368@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 74 comments

twiddlingbits@reddit

Diesel fuel pump nozzles are too big in diameter to put diesel in a gas tank, that’s done deliberately by gas stations to prevent that problem. The other way around is quite possible. In cold climates some truckers will run a few gallons of gas in the diesel to prevent gelling. But we are talking about 1-2% of the fuel volume. Up to around 10% would be OK, excess wear may still occur in the high pressure fuel pump and other places as gas doesn’t lubricate like diesel. Over 10% you are going to need a lot of repairs, if the HP pump remades and sends metal thru the engine you could be looking at needing rod and main bearings at least. $10K plus type repairs. That’s not a prank it’s criminal.

What makes the Dodge viper so dangerous to drive?

Posted by Negative-Night5247@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 743 comments

twiddlingbits@reddit

Agree, loose (over steer) is fast if you know how to drive it. When you lift off, you can downshift or downshift and touch the brakes to setup to hit the apex of the corner, then after apex, throttle up but not 100% immediately as that will break the rear loose A loose car requires a experienced driver who can feel what is going on with the car. Suspension tech has come a long way especially in shocks so cars now are more stable, then add traction control and it makes it where almost anyone can drive it fast which becomes a problem in itself. Then the car is faster than the reaction/thinking time of the driver which is probably a worse situation.

I would imagine the Cowboys franchise has already paid off their part from naming rights, other events, tours and of course souvenirs and ticket sales.
