I wanted a legit bmx bike so bad. I had a blue light special version from kmart. My parents refused to buy me the mongoose of my dreams but did spring for spoke covers and a sweet set of frame pads so I was looking fresh in 1988.

I got a hand me down 286 in 1995. Had to write 10 page papers in the most basic text program and print on a dot matrix printer which almost maxed out the memory. And the frustration of trying to load a game that was on like 5 floppies only to get to the last floppy and find out there was an error in loading it. Which I got involved in tech earlier. Lol.

Even better, I was the youngest of three, by the time I was 9 or 10, in the summer I stayed home alone with very little supervision from my sister who was 3 years older because my parents both worked!

Mom was 1945, Dad was 1943. I am the youngest of their 3 - born in 1978, sister in 1975, sister in 1972. Just like I'm on the edge of x and millennial, my parents are on the edge of silent and boomer.

I'm a senior director at a medium size global manufacturing company. I have one more move in me. Maybe to vp if the job is right. I love it but it's stressful. Lots of travel, strategy, leading multiple teams. It's what I set out to do 15 years ago when I started my masters. But I'm not sure I want VP bc it comes with a whole new level of bullshit and less coverage between me and c-level. Money is great, I probably do 25 hrs of real work a week. I'm right where I want to be. I will say that I did weather a layoff at a PE backed company and that sucked. 3 months of no income and had to take a step back to an individual contributor role and that sucked. Hated it. Then made a leap forward to where I am today.

What would I do for a Klondike Bar today? Honestly, not much.

Saw him at Indiana University back in 1996. He was touring on his somewhat weird Star Turtle album. Best concert I've ever been to, to this day. Man played every instrument on that stage from piano to guitar to horns and woodwinds.

I messed with these more times than I'd care to admit!

When my mom would leave me in the car by myself, I would use this to melt anything I could find. Usually it was something plastic. Like the straw to my water bottle I used during soccer practice. Then is be surprised when she's get back, notice the smell, and all me what I was doing while she was gone.

Best wishes to you. I'm the kid that moved away, and today I had to get on a plane and head home. Of course, the woman I had to leave in hospice care was my biggest supporter and always told me go live my life, that's what she always wanted for her kids. Sucks tho.

Oh, they know. My mom has spent the last three years in a nursing home after a stroke meant she couldn't transfer from bed to chair so she was ineligible to stay in her assisted living apartment. After a 10 day stay in the hospital, I think every staff member and most of the residents came down to her room to welcome her home and tell her they loved her on Thursday. She's a special one. And will be remembered by all that had the fortune to meet her.

We just put my mom into hospice today. The weight of it hasn't fully settled in yet. First of our parents between my wife and I. I am emotionally ready, but fuck does it suck. Without a doub the greatest person I know. The world will be dimmer without her light shining in it.

Question from a zoomer to Gen X, where there "indoor kids" in the 70s/80s?

Posted by Gamewheat@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 1834 comments

I wanted to be. My mom had to bribe me with plastic bags of honey nut Cheerios and Jell-O jigglers to get me out of the house. But that's where my Nintendo was, mom!! The older kids in my neighborhood called me the 'one handed wonder' because I always had a bag of food in one hand.

Eighth grade I saved up and bought a pair of Air flights. In high school and college (college grad in 2000) I'd buy last year's model when the Eastbay sales catalog arrived. Nike Air More Uptempos still my #1. I was so envious of the kids rolling up every season in the new Jordans. Never got a pair when they were being released. Now I have 25.

I've traveled in a suit many many times. It sucks. Everyone you see in a suit on a plane hates it. We'd rather be in our sweats and Crocs too. Bringing our bed pillows and blankets on board like we're going camping. Or bringing that full bag of barbecue on board to eat as soon as we get in our seats. But we have to wear a suit because we're trying to go on as short a trip as possible to be home with family so we're doing the trip in a day or one overnight or running to catch the flight from our meetings. If you're wearing a suit on a commercial flight and not coming from or heading to work meetings, you're a sociopath.

Trust us, we know. I'd wager to say is taller, larger folks try to make ourselves as small as possible. I know I do. Sit forward, turn my shoulders, lean into the aisle as much as possible. Hell, anytime a guy my dude gets on the plane after I'm me, I'm hoping he doesn't sit next to me too! I travel a lot and it always makes me laugh the passive aggressive ways shorter people try to let me know they're mad I'm a giant.

Same. I'm 6'8", 320. Because of cancellations I got stuck in a basic coach window seat. 2 hour flight. My head hit the bottom of the overhead storage. I thought I was going to dislocate my hip. Full flight. I very nearly had a panic attack. I always book exit or premium economy to manage. But this flight was a last ditch to get home after 24hrs of delays.

This still happens. Every day. In 2019 there were 4x as many 'travelers' as 1990. Planes are fuller, more people traveling. I'd wager people that only travel for vacation don't typically see the weekday warriors on their NYC to Cleveland flights, but they're out there.

I spend a lot of time outside during peak sun hours... Golfing, pickleball, pool, etc. I always wear a wide brimmed hat. I wear SPF 50 sun sleeves when golfing or playing pickleball. I apply spf50 mineral sunscreen before I leave the house and reapply as needed, up to 4 more times. I have family history of aggressive skin cancer. And I'm pretty vain. I don't want more wrinkles. But I hate applying it and being vigilant. I see so many other people just not care. I envy them.

Get a good white bread. Put a nice thick layer of Jif Crunchy peanut butter down. Grab that bottle of yellow mustard and lay down a healthy line of mustard on the other side of bread. Find that jar of dill pickle chips - go ahead and add a bunch of those right on the peanut butter. Put the two halves together and enjoy the greatest sandwich ever made.

I have 22 pairs of size 15 Jordans. I'm 47. I wear like 3 pairs of them because most are uncomfortable as fuck. 1s are okay, 3s are okay, 4s suck, 5s are okay, 6s are okay, 8s suck. 9s are meh, 11s are a little tight. 12s meh. Anyone want to buy them? Lol. Like new except the 1s, the 3s and 5s! Foot issues suck. Wearing shoes that hurt is a bad idea in my experience.

We had central AC but my dad swore it was broken and didn't have the money to replace it. So we had a window unit in my parents bedroom, we all slept with the doors open to try to get some cold air. We hung a blanket down over the stairs to try to keep the cold air upstairs. For like 10 years. Then my mom said enough. Called an HVAC company. All we needed was fucking refrigerant...it was like $150 to fix it.

tedsgloriousmustache@reddit

I divorced younger than you, at 39, and I'm a guy, so I can't speak to what it's like for a 50 year old woman...but I can describe what it's like when you've decided to divorce, to leave an unhappy relationship and to stop pouring yourself into something that doesn't fill you back up. It's euphoria. I bet you're carrying thousands of pounds of mental baggage on your back...when I told my now ex that I wanted a divorce ALL of that weight disappeared. Giving voice to your feelings, speaking then so that they can become a reality - there's so much power in that. The rest of the stuff will sort itself out.

I want to hate Michael J Fox (and that's a credit to his great acting).
