Do you remember this Richard Pryor movie?
Critics weren’t a fan and as adult I can see it is problematic but I loved Pryor in it so much! And the title “I just want to be your friend!”

Great flick!

I always loved Richard Pryor in movies. He was such an authentic, lovable presence. Remember Brewster’s Millions? Stir Crazy? And he was very forthright and honest about his struggles in life. I remember watching an interview with him after his freebasing incident and feeling nothing but empathy even though I had nothing in common with him. Contrast him with how history has unmasked Bill Cosby. For all his posturing and self-righteous preaching the man was a horrible monster.

Watched this movie about a month ago with my teen. We talked about how one of the running jokes was how afraid the main character (Richard) was of the police. How that's really not a joke, because we all know the truth now, that wasn't commonly shown in the media - that POC have a very good reason to fear the police. See, my teen son is also a POC. I've always 'passed'. We're Ojibway, and son is also Inuit. In Canada, the Indigenous people are afraid of the police.

There are some movies from decades ago that I would rather have the memories of watching them than see them again. This is why I am not seeing Monty Python & The Holy Grail on the big screen for it's 50th Anniversary; I've seen similar classics over the past few years in theaters and the jokes just didn't hit me the same way as they did later in life.

I saw this in the theater with my grandmother. Afterwards, she told my parents the "Master Bates" joke. I told them that I didn't get that joke at all. "That's good," my grandmother said, "it will make you go blind." That was when my dad lost it.

One of two movies that I will never watch again. Our brand new mall with its fancy 5 screen theater opened in the early 80's. I'm guessing since they were new it was hard to get the contracts for film distribution going. This led to a one year period where the only two movies shown in our small town were Tootsie and The Toy. I was 13 or 14 and cannot even think about watching either one again😄

Best one was the drive-in double feature with War Games and Trading Places.
