A food combo that you liked, but everyone else thought was strange?

I don't know if this was a thing that was experienced by anyone born before the 90s, but did anyone, for whatever reason, create a food combination that was really weird when you were a kid? I don't remember why, but in my early childhood, I decided to combine peanut butter and mayo as sandwich fillings. Yes, it sounds disgusting, but I was obsessed with it. It was my comfort food amidst the chaos at home and in school. My mother understood it because she had a weird comfort food of her own. It's bologna with ketchup on a slice of white bread. Sometimes she gets cravings for it to this day. She's an older boomer (1950) and her childhood was terrible.
Did anyone else have a weird comfort food when you were a kid? No judgement here.

Oreo cookies dipped in French Onion Dip. This was before sweet and salty became a thing.
Dangerous-Buy5986@reddit
Peanut butter on hotdogs!
BoldBoimlerIsMyHero@reddit
I went through a phase where I put peanut butter on everything. It wasn’t necessarily good on everything but it also wasn’t bad on anything I tried.
MattyBoomBlattyYo@reddit
Wrap the hotdog in bacon, cook it, then add the peanut butter 🤤
seanymphcalypso@reddit
I love Mac n cheese on my hot dogs, but now I’ll have to try a bacon wrapped Mac n cheese dog!
WheelLeast1873@reddit
as a kid one of my friends introduced me to Pepsi and milk.
For a short time I enjoyed it.
Secret_Entry1840@reddit
White bread. Ham lunch meat. Doritos. Crush sandwich flat. So yummy.

Sliced apples and queso
orange728@reddit
Ice cream with powdered Nestles Quik, My dad taught us that and everyone I tell it to thinks it's gross except for one random reddit user who said her parents made floats with Quik and 7up. I don't like hot fudge or chocolate syrup, it has to be the gritty texture of the Quik or plain
d3amoncat@reddit
We did that as well. We did it because we didnt have the money for both ice cream topping and chocolate milk mix. And even the quick was a treat
Snowfall1201@reddit
Something similar but Ovaltine on top of ice cream. It’s so good and essentially malted ice cream
Somethingisshadysir@reddit
Bean burrito with dill pickles. I still eat this regularly.
Cisru711@reddit
If I was left home alone for lunch, I'd make an "everything I will eat" sandwich. So pb&j, ketchup, mustard, cheese, any lunch meat, maple syrup, etc.
I can't say I particularly liked them, I think it was more about the freedom of choice. Also, I did not tell anyone else about it.
hot_mess_express13@reddit
I was given weird looks when I dunked fudge stripe cookies in lemonade but reading some of these...I feel absolutely normal
beautybirdy@reddit
I enjoy chocolate chip cookies dunked in lemonade! Similar vibe.
brzantium@reddit
This isn't too weird, but I was basically raised on PB&J. When I was 4, I would put my pretzels or Doritos (nacho cheese) in my sandwich. I had almost forgotten that. Now I've got a kid and all these dusty memories are flying off the shelf. I was making myself lunch the other day (PB&J of course) and we happened to have a bag of pretzels in the pantry (not a regular thing for us, they were free with something else I was picking up at the store) so I put a handful on my plate. I stared down at my lunch for a second, then my 4 year old self took over, I peeled open my sandwich and scooped the pretzels onto it, and then sealed it back. My wife saw and asked what I was doing. I told her "this is the way", stoically took it to the dining room, and ate in peace.
beautybirdy@reddit
I do this but with potato chips. I also dunk my sandwich in apple sauce. Memories of my childhood packed lunch.
RQEinstein@reddit
I feel like this thread belongs on r/stonerfood
acebojangles@reddit
I put creamed corn in my mac and cheese.
Longjumping-Code7908@reddit
Buttered, salted popcorn (not microwaved!) in a cup of milk. So good!! Grandpa was from Iowa but I don't know if that's where he got the idea from. It was (& remains) delicious!! Kind of like a savory cereal. Don't knock it until you try it.
Feisty-Ad2448@reddit
As a kid I would make butter and BBQ sauce sandwiches.
My brother would eat raw beef sausages dipped in worcestershire sauce
frodo28f@reddit
Grilled cheese with yellow mustard. Either dip it or spread a thin layer before toasting.
Butter and jelly sandwiches. Not peanut butter, regular dairy butter.
Lettuce sandwiches with miracle whip, salt, pepper and sugar
Liverwurst sandwiches with butter and brown mustard
Crowley-Barns@reddit
“Butter and jelly sandwiches” haha.
Fun cultural difference: In the UK sandwiches always have butter. It’s how you make a sandwich. You butter two slices of bread and then put the filling in.
When I studied in the US my American roommate was blown away. You put butter in your sandwich? I was similarly blown away WTF you think a sandwich IS you numpty?!
He was also intrigued by my electrical hot water jug thing. I asked if he meant my kettle? No, the electric thing! (In British English kettle means electric kettle 99% of the time, not the Victorian-era stovetop pot.)
Jam sandwiches (we don’t have jelly in the US sense) were a staple when I was a child. They’ve probably gone out of fashion a bit. I haven’t heard of people eating them for a few years. Maybe because I’m not a child anymore though!
vlazuvius@reddit
I do that grilled cheese just with pickle for good measure.
My grandma did tomato sandwiches, not lettuce, but otherwise identical. Always on wonder bread.
frodo28f@reddit
Oh I love tomato sandwiches with mayo and cheese
speck_the_ride@reddit
Always had a tube of koegels braunschweiger in the fridge at my grandmas. We'd eat it on crackers with pimento cheese.
frodo28f@reddit
Oh I do that as a treat sometimes. The doggo loves it
MashedPotatoesDick@reddit
Ketchup on tacquitos.
electrodog1999@reddit
Peanut butter and alfalfa sprout sandwiches are amazing.

I have one now that nobody seems to believe is good.
Eat Korean BBQ
Take a piece of chocolate cake and use that to soak up the extra juices and sauce from your plate when you are done.
It will be the best bite of chocolate cake you have ever had.
shinobi-dragonninja@reddit
My friend would go to McDonald’s and scrape ice cream off the cone with fries and eat it like that. Hot and cold, sweet and salty. I thought it was weird
Butter_toaster@reddit
This is pretty common actually
Abject-Twist-9260@reddit
It’s the best in a Wendy’s frosty.
Lanky-Lavishness-299@reddit
I always dip my fries in a milk shake.
alwaystheocean@reddit
This was a big thing at my school growing up. All my friends did it.
Golden_Enby@reddit (OP)
I knew a lot of people who did that. Tried it once. It was okay.
Donnie_Barbados@reddit
Nah man round my way everyone did this. It was the best!

Cheeseburger with peanut butter, onions, and mayo.

Buttercup squash on top of a toasted bagel. I would always use the leftover squash for bagel sandwiches.
rynliz@reddit
OJ + cranberry juice
Kraft Mac and cheese with ketchup
Toast with butter and maple syrup (poor man’s french toast)
Golden_Enby@reddit (OP)
OJ + cranberry juice sounds delicious, especially if the cranberry juice is tart.
Lanky-Lavishness-299@reddit
Cheddar cheese with peanut butter. It's ridiculously good.
rangeghost@reddit
Grew up with the Cheese Crackers with PB between them, so this combo tracks.
Lanky-Lavishness-299@reddit
Always stoked when I was able to score a pack of those, I let myself have them now and again or just dip my cheez-it into the Jiffy PB.
Intrepid_Potato9524@reddit
Yesss! I love Kraft singles dipped in peanut butter.
spinereader81@reddit
I loved pineapple cream cheese and raisin sandwiches. I never thought that was weird, but some girl in my class seemed to think so.
Golden_Enby@reddit (OP)
My mom used to make cream cheese and raisin sandwiches. I never liked raisins, but that combo was good.
JMU_88@reddit
When I was a kid I enjoyed chocolate ice cream with blueberry topping. It was delicious.

joshuastar@reddit
those octagon pizzas in the cafeteria always tasted so good with a little chocolate milk poured on top.
Longjumping-Air1489@reddit
Mustard and chocolate.
French’s yellow and hersheys. Still love it yum
calamitoustoaster@reddit
Hot dog with peanut butter and coleslaw.
vlazuvius@reddit
Not one I created, but an older kid (probably a stoner) who watched me turned me on to spicy pork rinds dipped in bean dip, and you had to wash it down with ruby red grapefruit juice. Delicious, but the people I showed it to later were all repulsed.
falkorsaveslives@reddit
Corned beef hash. I would smother it with pepper, salt it, drown all that in Worcestershire, and then add a touch of ketchup. With butter and toast. It was breakfast, after school meal, dinner.
JaniceisMaxMouse@reddit
I used to eat corned beef hash all the time. Then my cholesterol numbers stared to creep up. Now I’m thinking I’ll take my pill and try this combo.
Caliyogagrl@reddit
I used to pour grape juice on my cottage cheese. I loved it! I don’t know where I got the idea from.
speck_the_ride@reddit
Recently I started eating cottage cheese and potato chips. Heard it from a coworker. Thought she was pulling my leg till I went home and tried it, and yeah it's good.
LikelyLioar@reddit
My father puts jam on his cottage cheese. One time, though, I caught him adding a handful of Cheerios. When I asked him why, he said it "needed some crunch."
jocundry@reddit
I put Honey on my cottage cheese. It's great! The salty and sweet go well together.
twirlerina024@reddit
I never tried that, but we'd eat cottage cheese with canned fruit cocktail so similar vibe. I loved the contrast of the intense sweetness of the fruit with the bland creaminess of the cheese.
Caliyogagrl@reddit
Fruit and cheese is classic! Somehow it never occurred to me that I was doing that in my own way. Maybe not as weird as I thought, I was embarrassed to type it out at first.
Golden_Enby@reddit (OP)
That's the kind of weird I'm accustomed to. If you liked it, that's all that mattered. :)
speck_the_ride@reddit
In elementary I'd dip the plain salad lettuce we got at lunch in the chocolate pudding. I got some wierd looks for that one at the table.
cargobroombroom@reddit
Yellow mustard on cold pizza
Secret-Spinach-3314@reddit
Fresh bread sliced thick, with margarine and Trapist cheese, nuke it for 25 seconds, and boom, heaven. Thick crusted European bread is a must.
LikelyLioar@reddit
I went through a period of severe depression when I basically lived off something I called "the concoction." It was just Jiff creamy peanut butter and powdered sugar blended together.
I later developed a peanut allergy.
RustbeltRoots@reddit
When I was about 10, I put crumbled blue cheese on a toasted onion bagel. My mother was disgusted by the thought, but she tried it. She still makes them 30 years later.
twirlerina024@reddit
That sounds really good. Also that's a sophisticated palate for a 10yo! I hated blue cheese until I was like 30.
RustbeltRoots@reddit
It is good! It’s funny, I grew up in a very rural area, but we had great cheese. I was just mixing up ingredients that were available.
solomons-marbles@reddit
Tabasco & Old Bay on fries. Drench the fries in Tabasco then coat heavily with the OB.
marigoldilocks_@reddit
Peanut butter and mustard sandwich.
Before you come for me, the spicy mustard turns the peanut butter savory. You know how peanuts are used in some spicy dishes? Same principle. Try it, it’s pretty good.
OhTheHueManatee@reddit
Chocolate Milk and Dr Pepper. It tastes like the foam on top of a root beer float.
llamadrama2021@reddit
Peanut butter and butter sandwiches. Beans and butter sandwiches. And pasta sauce and butter sandwiches.
TiEmEnTi@reddit
I ate cottage cheese sandwiches as a kid. Still do occasionally. Just toasted white bread and cottage cheese. There's somethin about the combo of the warm crunchy toast and soft cold cheese...
Stook211@reddit
Ketchup and Mac n cheese... I still can't eat it without a squeeze of red.
BigRedMik@reddit
French fries drizzled with soy sauce and then dipped in ranch. It’s a flavor bomb
velouria-wilder@reddit
I always poured milk into my Chef Boyardee Spaghetti Os.
orange728@reddit
I always drink milk with spaghetti or pizza. Never directly on it, but the milk cuts the acid
tedsgloriousmustache@reddit
Leftover pizza is best served with a glass of milk. I never drink it with hot pizza, but with leftovers? Hell yeah. Dairy on dairy.
tedsgloriousmustache@reddit
Get a good white bread. Put a nice thick layer of Jif Crunchy peanut butter down. Grab that bottle of yellow mustard and lay down a healthy line of mustard on the other side of bread. Find that jar of dill pickle chips - go ahead and add a bunch of those right on the peanut butter. Put the two halves together and enjoy the greatest sandwich ever made.
wanna_be_green8@reddit
My mom used to put tuna and corn in our mac and cheese. I loved it but my friends didn't.
Blackbird136@reddit
Tuna and bacon bits. I still do it.
orange728@reddit
My mom did tuna and peas. I still eat this sometimes
Ethel_Marie@reddit
This is tuna casserole and I still make it, but the mac and cheese is made from scratch.
MetraHarvard@reddit
Crazy...but it makes sense. I've had corn with Mac&Cheese, like at a BBQ restaurant. Also adding tuna would definitely kick it up a notch!
bmoneycat@reddit
Peanut butter and bologna sandwiches. I loved these!!!
jamesmango@reddit
For a brief period I would make a sandwich out of two Chips Ahoy (from the red bag) and a slice of Kraft cheese.
I would also separately eat the Kraft singles with a glass of orange juice.
Not sure what was up with me and the Kraft cheese.
twirlerina024@reddit
I used to dip goldfish crackers in orange juice. Good stuff.
MappingChick@reddit
McDonald’s chicken nugs dipped in honey. Tame compared to some of y’all.
Quixotegut@reddit
I'm still baffled that people think ketchup on Mac'n'cheese is gross.
blacktrufflesheep@reddit
Childhood "gaucamole" recipe: one mashed avocado, one large scoop of full fat plain yogurt, one scoop mayo, fresh chopped garlic, fresh chopped onion, and Tabasco sauce.
Use Doritos for dipping. Best flavors are Nacho Cheese, Cool Ranch and Taco.
Dream-Ambassador@reddit
I put sour cream on my top ramen and it was good. Especially with some cheddar shredded on top
Donnie_Barbados@reddit
I make my ramen tonkotsu style, where you beat an egg with a spoonful of mayo in the bowl then slowly add the broth. It really takes it to another level
Dream-Ambassador@reddit
Sounds delicious
ObligationJumpy6415@reddit
White bread, mayo, slice of kraft cheese, and Fritos (in the sandwich, not on the side). I still crave it sometimes, so good!
Beenooner@reddit
My mom put butter on saltines and made “sandwiches” with them. I would cook up frozen spinach and douse the hell out of it with white vinegar. I’d probably get an ulcer now.
ReggaeForPresident@reddit
Cottage cheese and applesauce
MisRandomness@reddit
White rice and ketchup. I didn’t know anything else, my parents were poor and this is how they made white rice have flavor.
Scarbarella@reddit
Peanut butter and Monterey Jack cheese on a ritz cracker!
elphaba00@reddit
Peanut butter and cheese sandwiches. Everyone in elementary school thought I was gross. 40+ years later, my dad still makes them, either as a sandwich or as a flavor combo on top of rice cakes.
irishtwinsons@reddit
Rice cake with a slice of cheese on top, melted for a moment in the microwave and topped with a dollop of ketchup.
EastTXJosh@reddit
Fritos with peanut butter.
sporkily@reddit
Flamin Hot Cheetos dunked in split pea soup. I wouldn’t eat split pea soup any other way.
Traditional_Entry183@reddit
My family always put Miracle Whip on tacos. I had no idea this was weird, because I never had tacos anywhere but my own home until I went away for college. Then people told me that I was crazy. However, I've introduced my wife to the idea, and its spread among her family now too, and several of the younger generation always eat theirs this way now.
PoJupiter@reddit
I watched this cartoon when I was a kid, and a character (not even the main character or a reoccurring character) was eating a Peanutbutter and Dill Pickle sandwich. I had to try it. It was so good. I will still eat it to this day, but everyone looks at me weirdly.
I also like grilled cheese sandwiches with Miracle Whip.
Throw-away17465@reddit
I ate sardine sandwiches at school lunch.
I was promptly bullied to dust immediately afterwards.
PracticableSolution@reddit
We’d put the blue cheese dressing from the wings order on top of the pepperoni pizza
MlsterFlster@reddit
Peanut butter sandwich with bacon bits. Fake bacon bits, like Bac-Os. Dad fed it to me, maybe as a joke. But it's honestly awesome.
OwlEyesNiece@reddit
My grandma always insisted you had to eat something “solid” with soup. To this day I eat canned chicken soup with a side of peanut butter on saltines.
My great grandma jumped on the rice cake fad in the 80s and I loved them, but she held the belief that “too much fiber” was bad for kids. She put butter on them, and then PB on top of the butter. It was amazing.
PencesHairFly@reddit
My younger (1988) brothers would dip soft batch cookies in ketchup. I thought that was gross, but at the same time would dip fried weenies, (hot dogs sliced into thin medallions and pan fried with butter), in chocolate syrup. Chicken nuggets got the same treatment. Another that I still do on rare occasions is Biscuits and gravy topped with homemade apple butter, when I was a kid it was brown sugar, but learned it from my dad and grandma who still do it today although they've switched to sweet & low or something similar.
Express-Cow190@reddit
I had a few that looking back are abominations, and others that are less weird IMO but everyone looks at me weird.
Pepsi and Orange Juice

Dipping potato chips in spaghetti sauce
Happy_Confection90@reddit
I've never coaxed anyone else into trying it, but I like Junior Mints and Better Cheddars eaten together. Also, nacho cheese Doritos and M&Ms. I suspect that most people wouldn't dig cheese flavored chips and crackers paired with chocolate, but it’s good.
Aught_To@reddit
Cheeto Paws dipped in creamy peanut butter.

Mine is Doritos and peanut butter! Saw difference really but everyone else thinks I’m crazy.
tigerlilie43@reddit
Doritos with chocolate almond ice cream as the dip 🤤 or Doritos with strawberry cream cheese.
Dramatic-Dark-4046@reddit
I won’t eat a pbj without some nacho cheese Doritos on hand.
alwaystheocean@reddit

alwaystheocean@reddit
Peanut butter grilled cheese sandwiches. I used to make them when I got home from school some days, and I still make them now.
Ineedavodka2019@reddit
Those are good. Especially if you add some chocolate.
Dramatic-Dark-4046@reddit
I’ve had a pita or the such made with peanut butter and cheese grilled until it’s melty and so delicious.
alwaystheocean@reddit
Ooh, a pita would be excellent. I need to try that.
Attic-Music@reddit
Peanut butter and potato chips
Abject-Twist-9260@reddit
My mom was always dieting so when I was younger I had to eat her food choices but my favorite was the sprouts in a pita bread. Don’t ask me why but sometimes I still have it and remember the times with my mom.

Horseradish and hot dogs with A1.
