You will never know every term or acronym. Next time you see him ask a question that is extremely specific to you, like a gaming term or something unique to what you do. He sounds like a guy who memorizes the dictionary.

If it were me and I didn't want to work with something complex or maybe just a little difficult to understand the way they do things, I would go Fortinet for the firewall and Azruba for the switches and APs. Palo Alto is more complex and Sonicawall has an interesting interface, to be polite. Good luck on getting reasonable prices?!

We bought a bunch of the entry level ones when they first came out and we had issues with the screens and hinges cracking. We sent the whole order back and got our money back. The Dell rep found some Latitudes and we saved a bunch of money.

I used to run a small MSP and had a client in a similar situation. Instead of abandoning the client I found a developer on Upwork who converted the app from Access to SQL Express about $500 and suddenly everything worked better and was stable. My client was socially networked and got me several new clients.

Printer Recommendation: Color Laser with support for 11x17

Posted by MTB_NWI@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 17 comments

silkee5521@reddit

Talk to a reseller of refurbished printers. We bought a Lexmark c950de pre-Covid and the printer just hit a million impressions. Toner is cheap and maintenance is easy. We bought a Xerox AIO two years ago that scans 100 pages for the title company for $1100 and they buy toner every 6-8 weeks from the same reseller. They service it for free because all the supplies are bought from them minus the paper. It's a lot cheaper than the Konica Minolta machines we had.

Started in 1998 at $8.00 an hour for a large company fixing printer jams, running cable, and getting yelled at by employees because things didn't work in Chicago. I didn't do any real computer work. Finally moved to computer tech in 2000 at $9.25. Moved to a medium company in 2005 doing similar work at $13.50 an hour, then left to a trade association in the suburbs in 2010 with regular hours, almost no overtime and a great manager. I'm now the IT manager making 90k plus bonus . I talk to the CEO or his assistant twice a month unless something is urgent. Money was not as important to me as stability with decent work hours. My family is the most important thing to me.

I had a similar setup at a converted factory. I went into the break room one day and saw all the HR stuff on the walls like the OSHA stuff. I found out it was free and had them send it to me along with anything else they were willing to send me. I stayed late one day and papered the glass with it along with some copy paper to fill any blank spots. It pretty much blacked out the office. I ended up placing a webcam outside the door high up so I could decide when to answer the door. It wasn't perfect and I had to make some adjustments but overall it stopped people from dropping by to just annoy me.

Fortigate vs Sonicwall

Posted by Baoontester@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 144 comments

silkee5521@reddit

I've been managing small companies for over 20 years and I use both Fortigate and Sonicwall. I'm old school with my approach to backups. Don't put anything in the DMZ or WAN if you don't have to. So no cloud backups or VPNs that are attached to the firewall. You're opening the firewall to attack. My mentor said to never trust software if you can use hardware to do the same thing. Not one of the companies I have worked for has ever been hacked. If you keep the appliances patched and configure them correctly you limit your chances of having problems.

Get the lawyers involved and references for 5 companies and check out at least 3 of them. Post to forums you trust and use to get more information on the company. Personally, neither I nor my CEO would ever sign a contract this one-sided for this much money.

What are the most in demand skills needed for Sysadmins in 2025?

Posted by Smxbang@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 359 comments

silkee5521@reddit

I started out fixing printers then desktops, and moved to servers. I then moved to Cisco equipment like routers and switches, then to their phones systems. The company got bought out. I switched to Firewalls and security. I got tired of it and learned cloud systems like AWS, Google Cloud and Azure. I now manage my own small MSP that manages 4 small trade associations with 2 staff which includes database management and some scripting. I've done other things so I could learn new things so I could keep up. I plan on retiring next year and do as little as possible with tech.

Do you bring your laptop on vacation?

Posted by dotdickyexe@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 717 comments

silkee5521@reddit

No laptop, no email, no phone on vacation. That's why we have backups and documentation and redundancies. However, they can contact the MSP we work with to get help. They get $500 to twiddle their thumbs. The worst problem I have ever had in 30 years is that the Internet went out for five days starting on December 23 and ending on December 27. If you do your job right and the company is compliant with what needs to be in place then you won't have problems.

I used to work with a guy who was a tool. He had a programmable keyboard so I bought an identical keyboard and reprogrammed it to play different farm animal sounds. After he completely flipped out 20 minutes later and walked away I replaced it with his. I walked away and laughed the rest of the day. He got fired a few weeks later after yelling at the CEO. Our work environment improved greatly after he left.
