Mid life crisis ?

Worked jobs since I was 15, the only reason I have been let go has been for other people’s personal reasons, and it’s happening again at 47, I’m tired of this shit.

Yup, I was just laid off in October. Gunna be 49 soon. No severance, no package, no PTO to cash out. Worked there 5 years and they fired me at the end of my shift. I’m so tired.

What social media is our age group using now?

TikTok - I like searching for political content to see what’s happening all over the world Reddit - still the primary app I use. I prefer text-based platforms because most trolls are too lazy to read and respond. Instagram - RARELY. Only for posting my art because my own website gets no traffic and it’s required if I’m in a show.

I hated that show as a kid, fast forward to the early 2000’s and I move a block from the “full house”houses. I get asked almost daily (for 24 years)where they are. This show has been a life-long curse.

It's now a challenge to watch a movie like we used to.

Same! My buddy had a VW bus he’d let us drink and smoke in and blast Rage Against the Machine/ NIN or Tupac/Dre. He had a pile of sharpies too. We’d get loaded and scribble all over his van.

Work a bunch, hang out with my trans/queer friends in the limited spaces we have, make weird art for myself and try not to let the absolute chaos of the world drag me to hell. Bars ain’t so bad! Just don’t get carried away with the excessive drinking (I say this as a drinker and a bartender) The world is a strange place, make all the connections you can that aren’t harmful to you or anyone else.

Fellow xennials what did you go to college for and what is your profession now?

100% I’ve got a lot in friends in tech/Biotech and they are starting to feel the crunch. The big difference is they had steady jobs with pretty good salaries, perks, benefits and severance packages. Is non-tech people got none of that shit and when Covid hit I got $107 a week in unemployment until they finally increased the benefits. Now I’m at a job that barely pays me minimum wage with no benefits or PTO. This country blows. *awkward smile*

I feel ALL of that. I’m originally from Washington. Moved to the Bay Area in 2000, went to college in SF from 2006-2011. My plan was to get some kind of gig in San Francisco then move to Oregon (Portland or Bend) and then settle down in a smaller less competitive city. Headhunters would literally come to my senior class telling us about all these amazing jobs. I was so ready and excited. Then boom, recession. I got laid off from my 10 year union job in healthcare, couldn’t find any work in planning and had to beg for bar/restaurant work. It took a YEAR to get a job in SF. A friend of mine who went to Cal Berkeley and got a Masters in Microbiology had the same thing happen, he worked at a gas station for 2 years before he finally found a gig in his field. Me… still mother effin bartending. I’m 46, broke (making the same money I made in 2001) exhausted and the system has beat every ounce of motivation out of me. Yay!

Me too, with a BA in Urban Planning. Every single non-profit lost its funding and every government agency froze all hiring. Now, it’s all Ivy League grads that get the jobs in Urban Planning so I just gave up entirely. I’m a bartender with $72,000 student loan debt (original loan was $32,000. Thanks predatory, high interest loans.

prissyknickers@reddit

Okay, I am too. I’m smoking ( an actual smoke, gross) in front of my apartment building, with a frozen pizza tucked under my arm. I don’t have kids but I think most of us understand how meaningless things are feeling. The world is trash, all we can do is carry on as good people. If it makes you feel any better, I bought a DVD player to get “off the apps” but I’ve had Buffy the Vampire Slayer Disc 3 wedged in there for 5 days and I’m too scared to operate. Cheers!
