People moan about it but the weather here is predictably dull. Warm(ish) in summer, cold(ish) in winter. Never gets unbearably hot, I’m talking high 30’s to low 40’s (the last few days have been hot but it’s summer FFS stop moaning), winter might be cold and grey but believe me snow and -15/-20 is considerably worse (source - I have a house in Sweden). We don’t get tornadoes, we don’t have a monsoon season, it’s not consistently windy (unless you’re in the highlands).

If you can afford a gym membership you can afford a pair of £5 trackies from Primark. I’m not judging anyway, I just think skinny jeans are probably one of the most uncomfortable things you could wear to work out. It’s like pulling on a pair of leather trousers and doing a spin class

Do you, as a father, tell your son you love him?

Posted by CobblerSmall1891@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 579 comments

monkeyclaw77@reddit

Totally agree, the words are meaningless unless backed up with action. Spending time with your kids, being interested in the things they like, supporting their ambitions & listening without judgement are the keys to a good parent / child relationship…..having said that I also tell my kids I love them regularly.

Whereas now it’s only half like that, the rest has been redeveloped to appeal to the young professionals who now inhabit the area. Both states were an improvement on how it looked in the 50’s & 60’s when my mum grew up there. That was an actual slum.

Twice a month at most, usually a Sunday morning when I can be arsed to do one for the family - bacon (has to be streaky and well cooked) - beans - fried eggs - fried slice No sausage because my wife is foreign and thinks British sausages are a war-crime.

It was as if someone had taken the contents of an ashtray, soaked it in water for a few days, then extracted all the soggy tobacco ashy mess and dried it and re-rolled it into a filterless cigarette. I wanted to vomit after the first pull.

I haven’t paid for a new pair of headphones for years. Every time I’m approaching the end of the 2 year warranty period I log a complaint that the product has stopped working or the case doesn’t charge anymore. I’ve so far received 3 new pairs of decent Bluetooth headphones, the last two times getting an upgrade as the previous models weren’t in production anymore.

Yep I’m 47 and feel I absolutely won the lottery in terms of youth culture. Gigs, clubs, festivals, Ibiza, travelling Asia and Australia and still being able to buy a house, get married and afford kids at the end of it….i feel bad for the 20 somethings of today. Life should be for living, not scraping by.

Is British food more regulated?

Posted by VeterinarianProud644@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 1299 comments

monkeyclaw77@reddit

Yes, despite what social media will tell you American “food” is basically processed slurry with a fucking alphabets worth of additives & flavourings. Whilst there is a running joke that British food is awful we do actually have standards as regards the healthiness of food.

My wife's asked me to find British gangster films to watch, recently seen 'nil by mouth', 'dead mens shoes', which she's loved. What's next? Must be British.

Posted by boicymraeg@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 305 comments

monkeyclaw77@reddit

Gangster Number 1 is a film that gets overlooked but has a fantastic central performance by Paul Bettany. The Firm & ID whilst not strictly gangster films (rather they are films about football hooligan gangs) are both superb representations of that aspect of British culture, both are far superior to the more widely known Football Factory IMO The original Krays movie starring the Kemp twins is good, I’ve not seen the Tom Hardy so can’t compare.

What would you like the UK of the future to look like?

Posted by Cakeyhands@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 69 comments

monkeyclaw77@reddit

A stable health service Sufficient housing stock to allow young people to get on the property ladder whilst also providing sufficient levels of social housing to negate the need for private landlords to fill the gap. A transport infrastructure that reduces the need to rely on cars. High speed connections between all major cities and good regional hub transport options. More food produced within the uk to bolster our self sufficiency. A care service that allows elderly people to live out their final years in comfort and dignity. Clean waterways & shorelines …..not asking too much eh

It you’re not visiting English heritage sites then there aren’t going to be any discounts. To be honest these people are politely telling you that you have requested a discount attempting to use an un-associated membership card and that no such discounts exist. If you were told something else by the people who sold you the card then you need to take it up with them.

What does leading a fulfilling life mean for you?

Posted by Olduvai_legend@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 81 comments

monkeyclaw77@reddit

When I was younger fulfilment meant experiences & discovery so I spent a lot of time travelling & living / working abroad. I met people from all walks of life and saw and did things that I’ll never forget. It shaped who I am today. Now I’m older with a wife & kids my fulfilment comes from providing the best possible life that I can for them and continuing the adventures but this time through the eyes of my kids. I figure the next stage for me will be to save enough for a meaningful retirement & quit work young enough to enjoy it.
