Parents of young kids - do any of you not stay with your child until they fall asleep?

Posted by banwe11@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 834 comments

mayaic@reddit

Nope. Once my son moved into a bed (~18 months believe), we worked to get him to a place where we could leave after a bedtime routine and he’d put himself to sleep. Took about a week of small training. Now it’s read books, put the Tonie box on, and goodnight. He goes to sleep by himself. Much better experience than some we know who still have to essentially go to bed with their five year olds.

How can I help my partner find a job?

mayaic@reddit

He just needs to keep trying and hope. Getting on a spouse visa sooner rather than later will be helpful. The graduate visa is flimsy as employers expect everyone to need sponsorship that they most likely won’t want to give, so they don’t bother. For reference, I went through the same process and actually did get a grad job on a grad visa, but this was almost 5 years ago.

mayaic@reddit

Biggest question is what is his visa situation? Graduate visa? It gets 1000 times harder. He applied for anything and everything he can, having multiple versions of his CV tailored to the job. Ex. you don’t put that he has a masters if you’re applying for fast food. He drops the idea that he’s going to get a nice grad job. Apply for them if they’re there, but don’t only apply for them if he’s that close to running out of money.

Is anyone a data scientist and would you recommend it as a job?

Posted by don__gately@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 16 comments

mayaic@reddit

I have a master’s in data science and ended up working in credit risk modelling at a bank. I’m happy it’s worked out that way as I find the modelling more interesting than just strict analysis and I make decent money, but it’s also an incredibly saturated market that’s gotten even worse than when I started, which was 2021. On that basis, I wouldn’t put all my hopes on it being a life changing career choice.

Yup, we were going to use whatever money I won for a house deposit. I got told that was boring and had to think of something more exciting to say.

do we trust viagogo tickets?

It’s very hit or miss. Completely depends on the seller being honest. My sister bought tickets day of to a show and was fine. My cousin showed up to the venue with her tickets and was told they were fake.

mayaic@reddit

I’m selling some tickets on viagogo. I can’t release the tickets until the day of or possibly 3 days before because they haven’t been sent to me yet to transfer. That’s how most shows I’ve been to within the last 3 years are, so definitely not inherently a scammer because that’s just how digital tickets are mostly now.

Is routine hygiene appointments covered under the NHS?

I go to the hygienist at my NHS dentist every 6 months and see normal dentist once a year. My normal dentist is something just over £20, hygienist was like £47 or something last time I went.

Do you have any alcohol recommendations for someone with the taste buds of a wimp like me?

Posted by damaravore@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 54 comments

mayaic@reddit

People laugh at me but I’m the same. When I don’t know what to get, I usually straight up just tell friends “get me something that tastes like juice where I can’t taste the alcohol”. Some favorites over the years include: Kopparberg and Old Mout ciders, spiced rum and coke, mixed drinks wil Baileys or Kahlua, strawberry daiquiris, pink hooch, most very fruity cocktails that avoid gin.

How often do you go to the dental hygienist and how much do you pay?

What's your view on swearing in front of kids?

Posted by cheandbis@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 392 comments

mayaic@reddit

I’ve slipped once in a while in front of my own, mostly if I’m angry about something and ranting to my husband about it. But I consciously try very hard to not swear in front of my son, and definitely never at him. Definitely never in front of other people’s children.

Not true, I went through the process with both. Otherwise it wouldn’t be possible to get the UK license before you’re no longer allowed to use the U.S.

You can’t transfer your US license to a UK one, you need to do the whole UK process. But you can use your U.S. license for 12 months.

Do you think being able to test for all health conditions when pregnant, would ever have swayed a decision for you?

Posted by lisa_noden@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 32 comments

mayaic@reddit

Yes, my husband and I would have terminated a pregnancy that showed essentially anything abnormal. We’re not equipped to be decent parents to a child with additional needs. I know that not all are caught with testing and there’s always the chance that a physically healthy child could still have disabilities that result in additional needs and we would handle that the best that we could. But I couldn’t knowingly bring a child into the world with difficulties that im not in a position to handle.

What can Britain do to “bring back childhood”?

My child has been using a fork since he was 1. That’s with two parents working full time. He’s also been toilet trained since 2.5. There’s no excuse for the level of kids that aren’t ready for school at four if everything is normal developmentally. Please, asking parents to work a job when their child is THREE is hardly unreasonable.

Brits who dated or married non-Brits, what culture shocks did you experience?

Also American here. The class thing has been a difficult one for me. There’s such an obsession here with wanting to be portrayed as working class even if you’re squarely not. I struggle with the idea that no matter where you go in life, you are the class that you are born into, and that there’s a shame in bettering your situation to a certain extent.

Married people with kids: how many of you are in unhappy relationships but you stay because of the kids?

We were together 4 years when our son was born and got married nearly two years later. Very very recently married being the caveat to what I’m about to say. I think for us doing it backwards was a benefit. We were engaged when our son was born, but we obviously could’ve split up before getting married. Watching my husband be a father has been incredible. He’s so great with him, much better than me, and still is an incredibly kind partner. We obviously have our fights sometimes, but I truly cannot imagine raising our kid and living life without him. We both came from broken families. My husband’s dad walked out when he was young and he barely ever saw him. My parents divorced when I was about 11 and the decisions made after by my mom really fucked me up. It was really important to us both that we fight hard for our relationship so our son didn’t have to experience either of the options we did.

In my BBC subscription, I stumbled across a show called "Naked Attraction" is this a popular show? Because this would be off the charts in the US, and there would also be the "Moms Against Indecency" groups trying to get it banned, but what is the feeling about it in the UK?

OP, I’m American who now lives in the UK. I remember this was one of the first shows my now husband showed me the first time I visited this country. I had the same reaction of like wait this is just allowed on normal tv when it turned on and some guys full penis was just there. Things can go truly wild by American standards after the watershed.

My little sister is 18 and living in America and up until last month, still CHOSE to get her pay by check. I literally had to explain to her that direct deposit (which is bank transfer) better because she swore she would get paid a couple days earlier if she used the check.

Where the hell did "elf on the shelf" come from?

I’m an American with a British husband and son who lives here now. I fucking hate the elf and I said I wasn’t gonna do it. Didn’t stop my sister from sending one to our house from Amazon. Elf is just another Christmas decoration and hangs from something. That’s it. I don’t have the time or the energy or the desire to set up some stupid little scenario for him every day.

Fairfield county, CT. I was raised in CT, but not Fairfield county. It’s one of the richest counties in the country. I wasn’t rich to live there, but I had a good stereotypical New England upbringing of private schools, suburbs, and outdoors. I moved to the UK at 22. I love the UK. Life is easier here day to day, especially with regards to healthcare and I feel that money goes further. But sometimes I definitely miss the space and the openness that came from being in the northeast US. If I was rich enough to not worry about healthcare and be able to afford a house, I would love to be back over there. And I would say guns would have to be outlawed. I lived 20 minutes from Sandy Hook in 2012 and I was in school at the time. That’s when I realized gun control isn’t enough and America doesn’t care.

What Age Did You Have Kids?

Barely 24. My son’s birthday is 5 days after mine. My fiancé was 27 when our son was born. We’re still very new at it as he’s only 18 months, but we don’t regret it. Family is my motivation. I didn’t have a passion in work, but I went through two degrees to secure a good job because I knew I wanted to have a child and give them a good life. We got very lucky as we were not doing well financially when I got pregnant, but I got a good job and he finished uni and we’re doing well. I also really appreciate that I’m young. My sister had her first at 27 and her second at 33 and she says it’s so difficult even at those ages. I’m tired, but I can get myself up and run around and do activities with him. The only thing I wish was that financially we were more together in terms of owning a house. I’m sad that my son won’t have his own painted themed bedroom for probably another few years. I know they don’t remember and we’ve made something cute in our rental, but I wish I could do more.
