You reminded me... I'm a foreign doctor, just started work in a UK hospital A&E and cannot believe the amount of people who NEVER drink water here. Most are older people.
One guy told me: "I just don't like how it tastes". Another said: "Why would I drink water when I can drink tea"
>"Why would I drink water when I can drink tea"
Perfectly valid. It's just water with other things added, after all.
People get very precious about drinking water. Yes, it's important, but people are taking it very seriously this last couple of years. Unless there's something wrong with you, your body is pretty efficient at using water that's ingested not only alone, but in drinks and in food as well.
Also, just know that for maybe fifteen hundred years in England, people would have been asking "why would I drink water when I can drink beer".
For a long time beer was the only SAFE thing to drink, as the brewing process killed off dangerous microbes
Water was commonly too dirty/polluted to drink safely!
That's an [urban myth](https://www.ianvisits.co.uk/articles/the-myth-of-medieval-small-beer-19763/). People did have access to clean water, but drank beer for the calories because they did a lot of physical work.
This is true. However I'm coming from a rural homestead standpoint here, which I apologise for cause I didnt state that, where ales were typically brewed at home, and not only used for hydration but also as energy because they were made more thicker, thus higher in calories. So in that case, for the working homesteaders beer was the main source of hydration. Watch Tudor monastery farm, and tales from the green valley. They talk about this heavily.
Depends how you define "average". The mean life expectancy was brought down artificially low by the high rate of infant mortality. Generally speaking, if you made it to ten you could make it to seventy.
No, mostly they could. Most settlements have been near water sources until pretty recently. A lot of the time they were drinking beer like people today drink soft drinks and hot drinks. There were varieties of small ale that were full of barely-fermented malt that were used like an energy drink by workmen.
Tea is fine for hydration though, isn't it? It's very mildly diuretic but you don't pee more than you drink.
To be honest, water in hospital plastic jugs tastes of the plastic jug. There's usually a bottle of squash available though.
>Tea is fine for hydration though, isn't it?
Your body probably would need more tea than it is healthy to drink in order to hydrate adequately, especially if you're as old as the patient who told me that. For this person the diuretic effect was enough for him to collapse.
I can't find anything that suggests that drinking tea in "normal" amounts is unhealthy. Normal being up to about 4 cups or about a litre. A little shy of the 1.5 litres of fluid recommended a day but an orange juice for breakfast and a couple of glasses of squash should make up the difference shouldn't it?
Of course, all of these guidelines are for the average person, normally fit and healthy. Normally fit and healthy people don't spend a lot of time in such places. What was the old guy in for, out if interest?
That's about half the recommended fluid intake for the average height/weight adult male.
Most people do not drink enough water over long periods of time, and survive on 'just about enough' - leading to (varying severities of) chronic dehydration (rather than acute dehydration, which is what many people think of when they think 'dehydration'), which can have serious long term effects on health, everything from fatigue & brain fog, blood pressure issues, dry skin, constipation, headaches, all sorts.
Combine that with the average diet containing far too much salt, sugar, sweeteners, caffeine, etc, and it's very understandable how people get into this situation despite feeling like they're doing nothing wrong.
I just feel like it's vital info that needs to be spread!
Similar to the whole '5 fruit and veg a day' thing. In reality, that's more like the minimum and people should be aiming to eat more like 10 portions a day of mostly veg (roughly 80g a portion, fruit contains too much sugar to eat enough daily without eroding tooth enamel or increasing sugar intake by a substantial amount), but people take it as 'the target to hit' and leave it at that.
People don't run their cars on just the bare minimum amount of fuel, so why do they run their bodies on minimum amount of fluid and nutrients?
\-- Sorry for the long reply, but here goes... --
I used to think the same, but now I strongly disagree - a veg heavy diet is the cheapest diet around, unless you are in such a tight spot that the only option is to go for cheap bags of frozen processed foods, and even then, you can get frozen bags of veg to supplement that stuff, but even if just eating pretty basic home cooking, it is incredibly easy to get more portions of veg than you realise.
Eg; By the time you make a bog standard weeknight dinner bolognese, you roughly have added about half of this 10-a-day just from the sofrito base & tinned tomatoes.
For example, the average banana in UK supermarkets tend to weigh above 100g, 20g over the recommended single portion size, apples and oranges tend to fit the spec too, but as mentioned above, fruit is not particularly recommended to make up much of your 10-a-day, and can be a little more expensive due to being shipped from around the world. Local seasonal stuff will always be a bit better when it comes to price point.
Regarding fresh veg, a bell pepper is roughly 2 portions worth, a decent sized tomato can easily top the rough 80g--per-portion-weight guide, spinach is a cheap and nutritious leafy green, and more shelf-stable veg like carrots, potatoes, onions, turnips, parsnips, etc also tend to be incredibly cheap while lasting a long time in storage.
Frozen fruit & veg tends to be extremely cheap, too, as well as (situationally) technically better than fresh fruit and veg - EG, peas are more nutritious frozen, due to how quickly they are frozen after harvesting, though frozen bags of mixed veg (such as a sofrito mix, as mentioned above) can also be found for incredibly low prices - about half a kilo for roughly a quid in many supermarkets. Frozen berries are also often harvested in season & are a nifty easy addition to things like porridge (Oats are another excellent store-cupboard staple that don't cost much) or desserts.
There are also tinned varieties of many fruit and veg for even cheaper (like tomatoes mentioned above), and while some might be preserved with additives, there are also many versions that have minimal unwanted extra added to them, such as black beans, chickpeas, etc.
Dried goods are also excellent, such as lentils, some types of beans, and other legumes, which are also much cheaper than buying purely fresh fruit and veg, and are store-cupboard staples which will last a long time.
Combine that with the fact that many of us over-consume meat, which is a lot more expensive than veg, so can spend less on that and more on the veg portion of their diet, and it really is a lot more friendly on the purse than many people realise. (300-500g a week is recommended for meat, so roughly 3-5 portions, or approx. 1 medium pack of mince.)
It's largely just a case of actually going shopping with this kinda stuff in mind and being incredibly surprised by how full your fridge and cupboards.
I guess it depends on your circumstance. I don’t eat meat but most of the cost of our food shop is fruit & veg. We go through things like tomatoes, apples, carrots, pepper, cucumbers etc already and it used to be affordable but it’s getting harder and I couldn’t imagine spending any more.
We don’t buy much else, normal things like granola, pasta, rice, eggs etc, so we can’t cut back elsewhere.
I think, to be able to afford to have a ton of veg, you need to have plenty of time and ability on your side and I’m disabled, so I probably have a different perception than the average person
It really moot. Grains and cereals are fortified these days. It's really difficult to be malnourished even on what would be a bad diet. Occasionally a student gets in the papers because they got scurvy, but that's from not eating or some ridiculous diet. Most would get vit c from other things even if they didn't eat fruit.
The problem the UK has is an obesity epidemic.
And maybe there are a few people with low Vit D over the winter.
And doctors see ill people all day. Often they confuse this with how everyone is. It's like when a copper thinks everyone is dishonest because he only ever meets criminals and other coppers.
Fortified foods definitely help avoid serious cases of malnutrition, but there are plenty of macronutrients that are required, which these kind of things do not fulfil. It may not emerge as something as obvious as scurvy, but having a less-than-great diet for long periods can have all sorts of effects. One specific example would be that males that don't get enough zinc and selenium over long periods may experience lower levels of testosterone.
Also that is before considering the effect of a healthily balanced & varied diet on the microbiome. A quick big example here would be how the gut provides the majority of a persons serotonin, if you are truly interested and want examples to read further into.
When did you test my hydration levels? Or health.
Seriously just parroting dumb shit you've read on the internet as fact.
You had a patient who collapsed. This was not because he drank tea.
The 70 million people in Britain are not collapsing all the time.
Based on what?
e.g If I go cycling or climbing I probably drink 2L. But not if I don't. If it's 30 degrees I might drink double that.
There's no set amount you need to drink per day. That's just garbage not science.
This guy is confused because he only see ill people - and, for sure if you're ill (just as if you're doing a ton of exercise) you might need more fluids.
>There's no set amount you need to drink per day. That's just garbage not science.
I agree, but 2L is a guideline for the average person doing average stuff, not a hard and fast rule.
This isn't my hill to die on, but, based on anecdotal evidence and experience only, I think I agree that most people probably don't drink enough water.
>Most people do not drink enough water over long periods of time, and survive on 'just about enough' - leading to (varying severities of) chronic dehydration
Complete nonsense. When were you tested?
>That's about half the recommended fluid intake for the average height/weight adult male.
Depends who you talk to. I've seen 6-8 glasses, 1.5 - 2.0 litres or more, certainly not less, but 3 litres as you suggest seems excessive, other than during hot weather, active job/lifestyle etc.
I get through 1.5 - 2.0 litres a day, am otherwise healthy 6'3" 95kg and have had great medical interest in my kidney function the last two years after multiple organ failure in July 2021 and, apart from some recent stones, they're functioning very well and my pee colour is nominal. I was drinking more but I was on the loo endlessly and my pee was almost colourless!
The 2-ish litres of water a day assumes the rest of your fluid intake is coming from food, but many people do not make up the rest from their diet, due to not eating enough veg daily, and consuming too much salt/sugar/other additives that require the body to use liquid to process. It just isn't viable to regularly make up the amount required through purely tea/squash/drinks other than water unless you have a diet that regularly includes quite liquid-based meals (eg, a nice big noodle soup daily for lunch - a standard ramen bowl can easily have 500ml of fluid for you, but this also goes for soups, stews, etc) - this is how many people in hotter climates get enough fluid without just constantly having to drink - but many people, especially in the UK, eat quite dry meals. Meat and 2 veg, fast food, etc, just doesn't cut it without drinking extra fluid on top.
Also, pee should generally be very pale yellow/almost colourless as you describe.
I think that I probably spent at least a decade not being properly hydrated for enough of the time.
But yes, the 1.5-2.0 litres per day is fluid intake and I guess we don't "eat" enough fluids either.
I can certainly tell, now that I'm a bit more conscious of my fluid intake, when I haven't had enough; normally by a headache.
The tannins in tea can bind to iron and prevent its absorption into the body. So if you’re finding you’re having iron deficiency, check that you’re not drinking tea within an hour either side of a meal.
Don't guidelines generally suggest upto 400mg of caffeine is fine? Tea has what like, 35mg caffeine a cup, say 300mls a cup - you could take in 3 litres of tea and still be consuming reasonable amounts of caffeine for most people.
I think you probably can adequately hydrate with mostly tea in most cases personally.
Yeah I think so; hydrating on doppio espresso is probably not a good idea, but don't tell the Italians. As with everything, it's all about being sensible. My parents both only drink caffeine free coffee and tea.
>I can't find anything that suggests that drinking tea in "normal" amounts is unhealthy
In normal amounts it's not unhealthy, it's just not enough, especially if that's your only method of hydration over years. In higher than normal amounts it starts raising blood pressure and may be the only cause we can find in people with new heart rhythm disturbance.
>What was the old guy in for, out if interest?
Just passed out while queuing for something.
Is that true for decaf tea? I only drink tea and switch to decaf at night. I have 6-8 very large mugs a day. I have POTS/dysautonomia so have to keep very hydrated.
Same here, love tea, have a variety with low caffeine content and also have decaf variety, as I am not tolerating caffeine well.
6 mugs a day is my norm especially when I'm at home. If I'm outside I usually have extra water. Idk
I’m no healthcare worker, but I’ve seen social/care workers offering their elderly patients tea as it helps them hydrate while being social, in cases of dementia for example.
I do agree tho (as I continue to drink blueberry sports drink)
The diuretic effects of tea are overwhelmed by the amount of fluid you consume in a mug of tea. The only way to get a negative fluid effect from tea is to suck on a teabag.
There's something else wrong with your patient.
Tea is counted as part of your daily intake of fluids. Especially, if the person won't drink plain water. The important thing is to not add sugar.
https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/eat-well/food-guidelines-and-food-labels/water-drinks-nutrition/
NHS guidelines state that both tea and coffee count towards your daily water intake as the amount of caffeine is so minimal, the diuretic effect doesn't apply.
I dont see why this is a problem. Virtually all diluting juice is sugar free, whats wrong with a bit of flavour? You're still drinking the equivalent amount of water except it has a taste.
I mean the jury still seems to be out on long term consumption of sweeteners but overall, yeah, they’re fine. It’s more situations like my coworker going thirsty one day because it was “too hot for tea” and not wanting to go up and down three floors to the shop for squash or a different cold beverage. The refusal at all costs is weird to me.
Squash in your water is fine.
The reason they are saying drinking tea exclusively is bad is due to the caffeine content which causes your body to produce more urine that can then reduce your overall hydration.
It really doesn't.
Firstly the idea you drink water and don't pee it out is pretty silly. If that happened you'd be swollen up like a big balloon by now.
Secondly the idea that if you drink tea you will pee out more water than is contained in the tea is just garbage.
If you drink salt water then yes you will be in for a bad time. But not so much for tea. Not unless you're drinking huge amounts.
Thirdly most of the stuff about how much water you need to drink is old wive's tales not science.
That said if you want to drink a lot of tea I'd suggest decaf teabags.
Egypt. Work is highly disciplined and focused, no lack of resources that could hamper basic service provision. There's a healthy level of focus on education within the limits of available time & staff. 99% of coworkers are respectable and genuinely nice people. Patients are often very grateful to be seen despite waiting for hours. Work-life balance exists.
I'm in a well supported hospital in a posh southern city, though. So won't assume all England is the same since I've never been anywhere else.
Thanks for coming to work in England. We have a shortage of doctors and healthcare professionals in general and you’re making a real difference in keeping the nation healthy!
Come off it mate. It’s a net positive that this person is here, wouldn’t you agree? It doesn’t hurt to practice a little gratitude. I’m trying to be thankful for one thing a day to stay positive in these troubled times.
>who NEVER drink water here. Most are older people.
It's more common in younger people thank you think. The amount I've heard who literally refuse to drink water is so mind boggling to me.
My mum suddenly realised she was doing this to us and one day announced she was banning squash and we all had to drink plain old tap water. We were furious at the time, but it was a great decision. We did live in a place with good tap water, which helped!
I’m glad my mum was similar. I meet loads of people who say they struggle to stay hydrated through the day. Meanwhile my biggest problem is that I maybe use the toilet slightly more often than I otherwise would.
Tap water in the UK tastes terrible, just like in the US (at least where I lived/live). I always have to leave it in the fridge to “air out”, and even then I still put squash in it.
I think a lot of older (as in elderly or almost elderly) people will drink less water simply because they don’t want to get up for the bathroom as often. Or at least that is my limited experience with some.
Yeah, my sister is like this, she used to exclusively drink coke and ribena, but for health reasons has switched to the flavoured fizzy waters 😅 i did try to tell her that once they've added flavouring, sweeteners and carbonation it's not water anymore, it's just pop, but she was having none of it 🤷
My dad doesn’t drink water. He was late being discharged after prostate surgery because he hadn’t passed urine, because he hadn’t drunk any water. Madness. I constantly have at least one glass of water on the go at any given time.
I'm a doctor from the UK and it still baffles me. When I was a medical student on GP placement I had a patient with complaints of a headache. All red flags ruled out, not migraine etc. When I enquired further about how much water the patient drinks it turns out they drink no water at all. Only 1L full fat fizzy drinks because they "can't" drink water. When I asked why they just kept saying "I can't" with no real reason - no obscure water allergy. And when I pointed out that fizzy drinks are carbonated water they said that can't be true because they can't drink water.
I was at a loss. No wonder you always feel unwell as have a headache if you only drink half the recommended amount of water and it's full of sugar!
Why did they get the headache though? I assume they've been doing what they've been doing for a while up to that point, so if the sugar content was causing headaches then wouldn't they have had that much longer?
Ah I see you've met my dad.
The man literally can't stomach it, it's like his body rejects it.
Must've had some traumatic experience with water as a kid.
I’m originally from the US and also shocked by how many people here never drink water. In the US it’s basically gospel to drink as much water as possible every day (I’ve always heard you should drink half your weight (in lbs) in oz of water every day, so if you weight 200lbs, drink 100oz). Admittedly, we are probably overdoing it a bit in the US but the lack of water drinking culture (evidenced by the responses in this thread) here was surprising.
Sir Doctor, I do not drink water I also just drink tea and if I have to I drink 1/4 water rest juice.
I seriously hate the taste.
Do I have to drink water? Is that not enough.
Thank you for your service and for supporting the UK and the NHS.
Reminded me of how I keep telling my mum this. She will complain endlessly about light-headedness and lack of energy. Asked her if she's drinking enough water during her day, she said nearly 2L. Imagine my concern when I realised she meant nearly 2L of Coca-Cola. Nearly blew my mind.
It's mental that some people don't take proper water intake seriously.
When I was pregnant and wanted to feel like I was drinking something a little bit fancier than water I would make homemade ginger iced tea or virgin mojito.
When I was breastfeeding, my grandmother would bring me alcool free beers as she said it increased milk supply. I like the nanny ipa 0% from brewdog.
At the time I took the recipe from bbc good food I think. I can’t find it but it was something like this.
https://www.bowlofdelicious.com/iced-ginger-honey-lemon-tea/
You make a syrup with fresh sliced ginger, raw sugar, and some lemon peel, (black tea optional). Let it cool and mix with either fresh still or sparkling water and mint.
Erdinger alcohol free and Heineken zero are my go to.
If you like guineas the Guinness zero is almost indistinguishable as others have mentioned.
Becks blue is okay for a shandy.
Becks Blue is pretty good. Cobra makes a quite nice one too. I really liked the 0% Guinness, a little malty but not too bad. The 0% Bud, for me, tastes like one of those Malt drinks that are in the Caribbean section of the supermarket.
Spirits... there are some okay attempts but I've not found much that really works that well. The 0% G&T cans from Gordon's are alright but to be honest treat yourself to a Fever tree over ice with some fruit in and don't bother with the fake gin.
Wine. Tesco does some okay reds but the whites and sparkling I've found haven't progressed much since the 80s.
If you have a Middle East shop near you then you are well in. There are 4 huge brands on non alcoholic malt beverages. These come in original malt (which is passable) but also with fruit flavours added. My wife loves the Barbican apple flavour but there is something for everyone there.
That all is if you miss the taste and want to join in. If you want to treat yourself and maybe skip the usual diet coke and think "if they are spending £8 on a pint why can't I treat myself too" then hit the soft drink section and look at some of the pricier things. Bottlegreen is great but there are others like that as fizz or as cordial that you can add soda too. Some pubs stock premium cordials and similar now.
Also when you are out check out the mock tail menus, there are some great mixes.
Take care xxx
Oh god and there's always some idiot saying "why risk it?" that you want to punch in the face
There is no convincing scientific evidence that quinine is harmful to an unborn baby
This is a link to a reputable website discussing use of quinine in pregnancy (as prevention for malaria so much more than in tonic water)
https://www.medicinesinpregnancy.org/Medicine--pregnancy/Quinine/#:~:text=There%20is%20no%20convincing%20scientific,after%20your%20baby%20is%20born.
Honestly it does feel like a new thing every day.
I will cut down a bit but only because I discovered the alcofree summer martini stuff that pairs with fizzy water and crodino which is as close to a spritz as i will get this summer.
I was stuffing my face with pate on crackers and Brie n ham toasties when I was pregnant 🤰 I only found out after my during my second pregnancy that Brie and Pate were a big no no for pregnant people 😂🤭
Brie should be ok on a toastie, heating it up kills anything harmful (states this on the NHS website) eating bree, blue cheese, camembert cold is what is risky
Oh no not the Christmas PATE?!?! After my second was born my lovely sister pinched me a bottle of Moët out of the showroom at her work (she’s an interior designer) and got one of those cheeseboard mixes and pate from Aldi for me.. 👸 I’d been pregnant for what felt like two years, as I’d had my first then 3 months later got pregnant with my second so it was like a two year pregnancy 😂.. so champagne and high fat savoury treats were a winner in my opinion
Oh very nice, I got a wine voucher for Christmas so going to pick some nice bottles for after birth. Plus a baked brie and red wine night. Also sushi! And Italian ham!
Just so you know as to why, OG tonic water has quinine in it, which has a bit of a yes/no history as to is it good/bad etc. etc. and is on the list of you shouldn't while pregnant just in case. It is actually possible to get some types of more modern tonic water (the fancy ones) that do not necessarily contain quinine.
It is, but the world is a very different place now, information and knowledge mean that people have become very risk adverse, even though the likelihoods are very low. But everyone can make their own choices as long as its not hurting anyone.
Glad I've read this thread! Currently pregnant and a tonic with lemon is one of my go to drinks. I've never seen this recommendation to avoid on the NHS site and (like someone else before) had it recommended to me in previous pregnancy for leg cramps because of the quinine.
I'll do a bit of research into it now though, thanks for sharing.
So was I, first saw it on a menu in Prague where they are offered everywhere. Tried it and whilst not for everyone I'm sure it was nice! Have it with a twist of lemon, put the tonic in the glass with ice and then make the espresso over the top. Don't stir it.
Why isn’t tonic water advisable? It has quinine in it which is great for cramps and let me tell you those night leg cramps are no joke. I lived off the flavoured fever tree tonics when pregnant with both my children.
My used to be pregnant wife loved drinking tonic water without the gin, so much so she carried it forward into the current day and doesn't drink much gin these days
Just be mindful of the caffeine in those drinks, I stupidly thought Coke Zero was zero caffeine when I was pregnant and had way more than I should have
Doesn't it have caffeine in it though? I had my first antenatal appointment today and was told absolutely no caffeine. Which sucks because I've having the odd can of coke zero as a treat. (I agree that Pepsi Max is the superior beverage but it upsets my stomach)
Honestly, I'm looking at a post-mix set with a CO2 gas tank and Pepsi-Max syrup boxes used for pubs/bars etc. I love Pepsi Max but hate all the plastic waste. It would be an expensive output but I think, long term, I'd likely save money.
I’ve always been a Pepsi fan (original, max and diet taste like shit) but since they’ve changed their sugar content now it’s disgusting. I just don’t get why they’ve done it. So now I’m buying Coke, which I’ve never done.
Nah Diet Coke is top.
Pepsi max and Coke Zero are overly sweet and headache inducing (because it’s sweetened with ace k) and Pepsi QC is hit and miss to boot.
Horrible stuff.
From the way OP expressed themselves it sounds like they are suffering from alcohol withdrawal - when was the last time anyone you know said they were **desperate** for a soda or a cup of tea?
You can definitely be desperate for the taste of something
They very well might be craving the actual alcohol but if they drink something that at least tastes alcoholic then it might satisfy them for a bit
Lots of alcohol free beer and wine are regular beer and wine that have been "dealcoholised". This type of alcohol free drink has an average of up to 0.5%, but the process isn't always accurate, so there is a chance the drink can be around 2.4% abv. Companies can still legally lable the drink 0.0% alcohol free.
I've heard of people who, after drinking ten 0.0% beers, set off a breathalyser (but passed a blood test at a police station).
Tbh, i have no idea whether a few 0.5% drinks would have any adverse effects. You'd have to do your own research/ come to your own decision.
There are some drinks (eg: some brands of gin or sparkeling tea "prosecco") that are made without fermentation and genuinely have no alcohol. Or you could make yourself a moctail or explore hot or cold caffeine free teas (like roobos).
Tldr: Companies can lable 2.4%abv drinks as "alcohol free 0.0%"
Mine has to be Guinness 0.0% it is actually very similar to the alcohol version.
I have tried quite alot of different 0% beers. Below is a list of what I thought the better ones are.
Any of the brewdog beers
Shipyard
And in a pinch Becks
Guinness has definitely been the best.
I didn't like alot but the worst was Corona
Corona 0% is bad.
Of the lagers, San Miguel and Heineken are OK. I'm not a fan of Becks Blue, can't put my finger in why though.
If you're supermarket shopping, Lidl's FreeDamm 0% is good (blue stubby cans), as is Aldi Rheinbacher 0%.
If I'm out I'll often have a coffee, or a pint of soda water and lime.
You can get FreeDamm in Tesco/Waitrose as well. It is great especially considering the price
Brewdog Hazy Jane/Nanny state are outstanding, with wonderful character but more expensive, Guinness 0% is also good
Corona 0% is actually one of my favourites. Not a fan of the san miguel and Heineken is what I'll get if there's nothing else. I've tried basically everything on the market and the top runners for me are Corona 0% and lucky saint.
I just tried that FreeDamm at the weekend and was very impressed.
Of the AF brand lagers I’ve tried, Heineken is about the best. Moretti is a bit watery; Becks tasted really weird when I tried it, but they were early out the traps for AF beer and things have improved a lot since then.
Guinness 0.0 is really nice.
Tbf the alcoholic Corona tastes bad, so never bothered with the AF version. I read somewhere that all Corona has essentially gone off because it's kept in a clear bottle.

Please everyone: recognise that these are not 0% alcohol. They are typically 0.04% or 0.05% alcohol (i.e. a small enough amount of alcohol to get away with marketing it as 0% alcohol), but that's still alcohol!
They are NOT suitable for pregnant people!
WRONG
They are suitable for pregnant people. The NHS and Tommy's recommend alcohol free beer
https://www.tommys.org/pregnancy-information/im-pregnant/alcohol-in-pregnancy/tips-alcohol-free-pregnancy
Impressive selective reading skills.
First paragraph on that link:
"There is no known safe level for drinking alcohol during pregnancy , so it is best to avoid it completely to reduce potential harm to your baby."
Without a link to back it up, but I’m sure I read a brioche burger bun can be higher than 0.05% ABV, making 0.0% drinks a similar ‘risk’ to common foods.
That sounds quite extreme, I’ll hunt out a link!
In looking for links - the websites for these drinks (Guiness and Thather's cider) seem to be quoting 0.0%, which is similarly unhelpful.
I remember seeing the percentage on the side of (what I thought was 0% lager) and finding it to be something non-zero (0.04% or 0.05%) which shocked me/annoyed me.
If anyone has a link showing what 0.0% means (whether it's 0.04% or like 0.00004% etc), I'd be interested to see it.
To me - they'll stay "tiny amount of alcohol" drinks and I would suggest pregant people avoid, in favour of soft drinks.
https://www.irishmirror.ie/news/weird-news/unexpected-alcohol-everyday-food-drinks-26108414
Duck me that’s an abomination of a website for ads and clicky things, but yeah… American style burger rolls 1.24%, grape/apple/orange juice up to 0.8%
Finding 0% Guiness was amazing. As a former alcoholic with lots of friends that still drink, I thought I had lost my social life. 0% Guiness is almost identical to the real thing! Absolutely love it!
As a former Guinness drinker, the 0.0% is very good at matching the taste and consistency of the real thing, although I’d say it’s slightly thinner than the real thing. If I was on a sesh and three Guinness’s deep then I’d probably not notice if I was served a 0.0% instead of the real thing.
I had to give up due to non-drinking related liver issues, I do miss getting on it with my mates, and having a bag of 0.0% has been the closest I’ve been to being on the sesh that I come to. A pint of lime and soda doesn’t quite cut it
Are you my twin separated at birth ? Almost exactly what I would write. Swap the Becks for Heineken 0% tho.
Can also add athletic brewing Run Wild ipa and the golden ale upside Dawn.
Avoid doom bar ( all versions TBF) and st peters . Both taste like liquid shreddies and are disgusting
Big drop brewing are purely alcohol free and do some absolutely great ones, their citra and also pine pale ales are amazing, the stout is a bit too rich though and their larger falls into the trap of all alcohol free largers of being far far too sweet.
Have you tried Erdinger Alcohol Frei? By far my favourite AF beer. Pretty sure that GB Ultras were handing them out to runners at the finish line of the pennine barrier 50 miler a couple of weeks ago!
Lucky Saint is good as well. Neighbour left a can and I tried it, tastes like normal lager. It is 0.5% though so not sure it's OK for pregnant women. Becks Blue is my go-to as it's like £9 for a 24 pack.
Don't know about the UK, but Irish hospitals used to supply new mother's with a bottle of Guinness. Supposedly has a high iron content.
My Irish nan used to give me a mix of Guinness, warm milk and dark brown sugar in a glass when I was ill as a child. Best ... sleep ... ever.
The part about the hospitals is true but the iron content of Guinness is a myth, it only has trace iron. They used to advertise Guinness being healthy simply because it wasn't illegal to do that back then, like it is now
>Don't know about the UK, but Irish hospitals used to supply new mother's with a bottle of Guinness. Supposedly has a high iron content.
Yes, UK hospitals did this. Not just a bottle though - from what older relatives told me, it was a crate, either of Guinness or of Mackeson's Milk Stout.
0% Corona tastes exactly like normal Corona, though.
If you like the latter, you’ll like the former.
I at least appreciate that it tastes like the regular stuff, rather than some uncanny second species of drink that is neither here nor there.
I've tried a lot since giving booze up over two years ago, agreed Guinness is really good. Stella 0 is surprisingly good, I wouldn't touch the real stuff when I used to drink, but the 0 version has a nice dryness that is missing in a lot of 0 beers.
Most of them fail when they try to imitate the real beer, the best ones are usually ones they try something unique.
I tried it last week for the first time. I'd say, no, not really. Bit like a perfumed fizzy apple juice. But, popping the cork off the bottle and having it ice cold from a prosecco glass was nice and refreshing. Felt like I was having a drink but no worry of a hangover - lovely 😊
I am very boring in this regard, I mostly only drink orange squash and water. I don't especially dislike tea and other drinks ( though I don't drink fizzy drinks or alcohol) but they're worse than water and water is simpler so why ruin the water?
My 3 go to beers to cover all bases
Lucky Saint - Lager
Guinness - stout / winter ale
Brooklyn Special Effects - IPA
And Sheppy’s for a cider.
Noughty is also good as a 0% sparkling wine
That’s my go-to, they do deals if you buy directly from them too.
Zero-alcohol Cobra is probably the worst thing I’ve ever drank though, so avoid that one.
Lyres do an alcohol free spritz similar to Aperol and Campari. They’re great either with just soda or especially with nozecco! They’re just called Italian Spritz.
Heineken Zero, San Miguel 0% are great tasting AF lagers… there’s a LOT of great AF beer & cider out there now… Market has exploded over the last few years!
I’ve been having ginger beer or ginger ale from Fentimans. It has that similar burn to what alcohol does from the ginger and it’s overall just a nice drink!
Lemon lime and bitters (popular in Australia - you may have to explain it to bar staff over here).
Lemonade, lime cordial, a healthy shake of Bitters (most commonly Angostura Bitters), ice and stir.
Most bitters **are** alcoholic (40% or so to dissolve the herbal contents) but TBH you're having like... less than half a teaspoon.. so the whole thing is usually considered a zero alcohol drink (technically less than 0.5% counts - seem to recall it has less alcohol than a sandwich contains in the two slices of bread which has alcohol as byproduct of the action of the yeast). Bitters without alcohol [do exist](https://boisson.co/blogs/news/non-alcoholic-bitters-guide) but can be hard to find.
Bitters are a common ingredient in cocktails so it has some of those complex flavours (or it may remind you of cola cube sweets depending on your age)
Thatcher's Zero and Rattler Zero are my personal favourites. They both actually taste like cider and not some overly chemical fruit drink like the Koppabergs and Rekorderligs of the world
Disagree on thatchers zero, can't stand it personally
Sheppy's alcohol free is pretty good
The fruity ones can't tell the difference between 0 and normal because the normal tastes like pop in the first place
I've actually recently discovered I prefer the alcohol free mixed fruit kopparberg to the alcoholic one, it gets rid of that edge of flavour I'm not keen on.
I've never tried the Sheppy's one as it's 0.5% whereas the others are 0%, and as a former heavy drinker I like to stay as close to zero as humanly possible. Rattler is my preferred choice but I can't find it anywhere near me annoyingly (I will be buying a crate when I'm in Cornwall on the next bank holiday weekend)
Literally the only place I've seen it outside of Cornwall was a random shop in York. I make a point to look out for it but it's elusive in the north west
[This one from Sainsbury's](https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/product/drinks-/sainsburys-medium-dry-low-alcohol-apple-cider-500ml) is very good, but it does have a bit more alcohol than most, 0.9% rather than 0.5%... but that's still very low.
My personal faves are Heineken 0.0 and Guiness 0.0
Was never a fan of either when I used to drink but they've both got the taste pretty well matched to the original drinks.
I find all the Brewdog stuff to taste quite water-y and have a really strange aftertaste. Not a fan at all, and I usually love Brewdog (and actually get a discount online with them but still don't order it).
Also pregnant. Obviously everyone's tastes vary but for me these have been my go-to:
Beers - Peroni 0%, Erdinger Alkoholfrei, Beavertown Lazer Crush (the last two have a bit more favour, but the Peroni I think is the closest you will get to an actual lager)
Wine - They're all pretty foul to be honest. The best I have had is Thomson & Scott Noughty Sparkling Chardonnay, which they sell in Waitrose, Sainsburys and Majestic. It's pricey but I think worth it for a special occasion if you don't want to feel like you're missing out.
Spirits - Have only tried the alcohol free gins but they're all pretty decent. Am on Tanqueray 0.0 at the moment and it's a pretty good immitation.
Co-Op garnacha rose 0% is amazing, it’s about £3.40 but be on the look out for it as it isn’t stocked everywhere and may be randomly placed on the shelf
When my Dad has a small health scare he quit drinking for a short while. I think he said a couple of like IPAs and beers are quite good. Avoid white wine and gin like the plague, they’re overpriced and nowhere near the same
Non-alcoholic drinks have a minimum threshold which they have to be under, to be able to call themselves non-alcoholic. There is often still alcohol in them, but a small amount.
Exactly what kind of risk are you willing to tolerate, that you can't just drink something that actually doesn't have alcohol in it?
This has to be a troll or outrage-boner post. Half the posts in this thread are about how awesome or ridiculous it is that the UK prides itself on being a country of alcoholics. Now a pregnant woman can't lay off the taste of the sauce for 9mo?
If you like lager type beer, alcohol free Peroni is surprisingly decent.
Consider as well getting some recipes for alcohol free versions of cocktails you like.
We got some free gin 'aromatics' in a HelloFresh box, from one of their partners/advertiser's. I can't remember what it was called, but it had a blue label, and when mixed with a good tonic, tasted very nice indeed! Hopefully someone else got the same and can remember the name!
If we want a taste in the drink beyond just water, The Werefrog would say cream soda. The grandma of The Werefrog introduced The Werefrog to it, and The Werefrog love it.
Highly recommend the german beers. Weheinstephan is my fav. I think your aldi or tesco may sell it. Helped me move away from the booze.

Though while pregnant you’re also meant to be keeping your caffeine intake in check. Not necessarily zero caffeine, but wouldn’t recommend switching to large amounts of coke.
The canned version of all kinds of Coke no longer lists caffeine as an ingredient or mentions it anywhere on the can. Not sure if that's just the bulk stuff we can get at work or a general thing, and google doesn't reveal much, but I'm getting suspicious at this point.
Yeah, I just didn’t want someone skimming down Reddit, seeing someone recommend Diet Coke as a drink for pregnancy and think it’s fine, then have a miscarriage etc.
The caffeine volumes needed to induce an actual miscarriage aren't known precisely (you can't experiment on pregnant women) but are believed to be very very high. The dose that induced miscarriage in rats was equivalent to 40 cups of coffee for a human.
You still shouldn't overdo the caffeine, but we should put these risks in perspective.
Most people aren't aware but the diet stuff and zero/max/xtra versions of colas have more caffeine than the sugar ones. Just to keep in mind if you are watching your intake
Aside from the caffeine side of things, ‘sugar free’/‘diet’ usually means added sweeteners. Which are not sugar, but are something else, a chemical(s) which doesn’t occur naturally in the context.
From a company whose name revolves around cocaine, perhaps be wary of what they include in their ingredients, and what you consume.
That’s why I do my exchanging of possibly dull information here, where people can disregard it at the flick of a finger if they wish. Parties are for fun ;)
I’m also pregnant so I can give you my feedback based on one’s I’ve tried during this pregnancy.
The most alcohol-tasting non alcoholic beer I’ve tried was Innis and Gunn 0.0%! That would be my number one. I wouldn’t have thought to try it but I won some cans of it in a raffle and they were actually my favourite out of everything I’ve tried.
Next would go for Heineken 0.0%, you can tell it’s non alcoholic but at least for me it’s readily available in most if not all pubs I’ve been in and tastes almost like the real thing.
Guinness 0.0% is next on my list as tasting similar to the real thing but quite watery consistency and it’s slightly sweeter than real Guinness.
I like the non alcoholic ciders I’ve tried but most of them just taste like fizzy fruit juice. But what I will say is they gave me the biggest placebo of all the drinks I tried.
Bristol Beer Factory do a fantastic 0% IPA - it's called Clear Head and you can order it on their website. I love it and can't tell the difference between that and an alcoholic IPA.
Came here to say this. It's the only alcohol free beer I've had that actually tastes like an alcoholic beer. I think technically it's got like 0.25%, but I'll let that slide haha.
Can buy it in packs of 12 too, rather than the four packs most 0% beers come in.
Ginger ale with ice and a slice of lime. Good for digestion, tastes like there could be a hint of brandy in it if you use your imagination, and it looks pretty.
Make a juice if you have a blender just put heaps of strawberries blueberries etc I’m there like the whole packet always a winner don’t put a lot of water in so it’s thick
Big Drop, anything they do
Lucky Saint
Beavertown do Lazer Crush, it's nice
Just avoid Heineken Zero or you'll be airborne with the farts, also it's absolute piss
Go to B&M's and load your trolley up with Three Mills 0 alcohol wine. It's absolutely incredible, I love it. It's better than nosecco (although you can get that too), so have an experiment and see what tastes good.
Stopped drining a year ago - personal favourites Square Root AF negroni spritz / mojitos
Zingi bear switchel
Flat tyre non alcoholic lager :)
You can get them all online.
Seconding the recommendation for Adnams Ghost Ship alcohol free, or Brewdog Punk AF is nice. Or if you just fancy something soft, lime cordial and soda water with loads of ice is grand.
Oranhe juice and lemonade is good. I can't have alcohol because of my meds and I also can't have grapefruit which is weirdly becoming more of a problem.
They actually do mocktail bottles in tesco, they're pricey but if you like it that much, they taste exactly like alcohol
If you're looking for something to replace an alcoholic drink I'd suggest a fruit cocktail. Get different kinds of juices and go at it, did alcohol free cocktail parties with friends before which were all hits!
Appletiser, by far the most delicious drink in the world, I like to chill it and drink it from a fancy glass and pretend I'm a grown up (I'm 40, I just never grew into liking wine 😅)
Went through this with my wife for the last 9 months… never really found non-alcoholic flat wine or cocktails that worked, everything tasted too sweet. She found her favorites were Heineken 00, non-alcoholic brut sparkling wine, and the phony negroni bottled cocktail!
There's a brewery that delivers nationwide called Glen Affric. They do completely 0% (rather than the "slightly less than 0.1%") alcohol free cocktails. My partner doesn't drink alcohol and absolutely loves them! I've tried some of them myself and they taste quite similar to the real thing
Teetotal for 10 years, Free Damm is what I'd buy if available every time. Corona Cero is decent, I've given this to guests who haven't realized it was the 0% version.
Honorable mention for Guinness 0% too.
Not alcohol per se but I'll order lemonade with a splash of blackcurrant squash in a gin glass with the normal garnishes that come with a gin when I'm out and don't fancy something alcoholic or having to explain why I'm not drinking. Might make you feel a bit like you're having a drink
I love their Italian Spritz, tastes exactly like an aperol spritz when mixed with tonic (though nosecco would probably work as well or soda water, maybe).
This! Great actual advise. All lyre's spirits are really great IMO. Non alcoholic amaretto and "whisky" are great too. Especially if you make a sour cocktail with them! There's eggless foamy available on the market too.
Lidl do a 0% gin called CeroCero that is actually really good, got me and my wife through pregnancy.
Avoid any red wines, they just aren’t worth it.
Waitrose has just started a big push on 0% stuff, the wines are all pretty good, can’t speak for the other “spirits”.
M&S do a really good 0% sparkling nosecco, though to be fair most 0% Proseccos are pretty good.
The best sparkling wine substitute I found was the Sainsbury's taste the difference one.
Punk AF, freedamm are the lagers I buy.
Seedlip gin (aromatic specifically) is good but expensive for what it is.
None of it tastes as good as coke though.
Asahi 0% is actually well decent. Rate Corona as an alcohol free beer that very closely resembles the alcoholic version, don't really rate Corona in general but if that's your thing then go for it! Other good ones are Big drop brewery, Days Brewing is a good one i've tried recently, really beer like, and Lucky Saint is lovely too.
Non beer related, Seedlip Gin is amazing, and CleanCo tequila is good.
A drink that isn't trying to be alcohol but hits the spot for me when I get that feeling of wanting a drink is Dash!
While I was pregnant I treated myself to some fancy sodas and mocktails from a company called Square Root. Some were a bit hit and miss, but I enjoyed their AF negroni with lots of ice.
Have a look at mocktails for sure. I also occasionally had a Sheppy's Cider (which is 0.5%, and though my midwife assured me it was safe I still didnt have more than one a month out of guilt 😅)
Mash Gang stoop for one of the best lagers (it beats lucky saint), I’ve found kombucha is a great alternative, or even a bit of white wine vinegar with sparkling water. Most wines are just grape juice.
Ghost Ship 0.5% is quite nice. I know it’s not technically alcohol free, but fine if you’re the designated driver. Also counts as a soft drink at Wetherspoons so makes a cheaper meal and drink combo
The most alcoholic tasting non alcoholic drink I've tried so far (and the one I enjoyed the most as a 0%) is the freixenet 0% prosecco. 0% kopparberg is nice but definitely feels like it's missing something without the alcohol plus you can't drink too many without your teeth feeling horrible. 0% gins are okay until you taste it on its own and realise its just the taste of the mixer you've got it with as the "gin" itself is basically just water.
If I've got money to spend, I'd definitely go for mocktails. If I haven't, then a lime and soda is always good.
My partner had some ‘Nosecco’ from Morrisons and said it was best during her pregnancy but she’s not a big drinker. Just enjoyed the social aspect of it
The non alcoholic Guinness tastes really good.
Also non alcoholic German beer like nom alcoholic Franziskaner Weizen, they have it in most supermarkes.
So may bars now do Mocktails, they are a big thing at bar conventions (if that's what the are called) I know a few places that don't have them in the menu but will make them to the 'vibe' you want. I know a pub that makes a great passion fruit notini
My wife’s pregnant at the moment, so apparently that means I can’t drink either.
Stay away from the Brewdog stuff and it vaguely tastes like it was stored near some beer.
Also not a huge fan of the non alcoholic gins (although I’m drinking one now). They tend to be flavour heavy and overpower any mixer you add.
The Gordons G&T premixed cans are pretty good, as well are the Kopparburg ciders.
Seedlip Grove 42 for gin replacement
Fortnum and Mason sparkling tea - not a nosecco, but interesting and so tasty.
But in general, I just like serving a drink in a wine glass with ice. Feels fancier. San Pellegrino, kombucha, Dash water.
I also like pink grapefruit juice and soda water, and ginger ale with fresh lime.
Gordons 0% gin is lush. I also quite like Nosecco from Sainsburys (i think), but my sister in law thinks it tastes like wee so...might be a preference thing.
If you’re pregnant definitely try the 0.0 Guinness. When I was pregnant my midwife told me to drink a small can of standard Guinness a week to help with anaemia.
To be honest, from pregnancy experience, I discovered all kinds of pleasures with non-alcoholic drinks. Simple things from elderflower and sparkling water with cucumber or lemon according to your tastes. To ‘mocktails’, which are really starting to be appreciated in some places, and can be very good. There are some okay non alcoholic wines and beers, see if you like those. I prefer things being what they are, rather than pretending to be something else. There are great fruit/vegetable combinations out there.
Brew Dog, Nanny State if you like beer. Bought it for my son because he doesn’t drink but turns out he doesn’t like the taste of alcohol either so I drank it and it was good even though I love proper alcohol.
Aldi have a 0% pilsner which is very good
Pentire and seedlip are good gin alternatives
Kombucha is nice for something different
Cawston press have some lovely fizzy drinks which are not overly sweet
Waitrose seem to have the best alcohol free wines but I'm not 100% sold
From an also pregnant person dying for a drink!
Vandestreek Playground was excellent, Peroni Libera, San Miguel 0.0%, the Smashed range and a lot of BrewDog AF drinks to pick from are my normal go tos. I’ve been alcohol free for 6 months and it’s been pretty easy.
Kombucha if you like a non sweet taste but make sure you buy proper (usually organic) kombucha because some companies add sugar to take the edge off the slightly acidic/sour flavour. I love it
Nozecco[Sainsburys link](https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/product/ProductDisplay?storeId=10151&productId=1197800&langId=44&istCompanyId=1e096408-041f-4238-994e-a7cf46bf9413&istFeedId=689af7a8-5842-4d88-be59-1ee5688a81b5&istItemId=wimiwmqrx&istBid=t&&cmpid=cpc&utm_source=Google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=15426723355&utm_content=shopping&utm_term=%7Bsku%7D&utm_custom1=129125419326&utm_custom2=759-449-0952&gclid=CjwKCAjw9pGjBhB-EiwAa5jl3A8D35Df7Q41v-aiA1ZZg6OwU58xXpeQwB97YuAKU1lW4YpdBhcKphoCSS4QAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds) is actually quite good - I bought it by accident and didn’t realise it was zero alcohol until I’d drank the best part of a bottle and wasn’t drunk…
Best tasting non-alcohol lagers I’ve found are Corona Zero and Heineken 0.
Erdinger 0.0 Weissbeer is really nice too.
As far as traditional soft drinks in the pub, I love a ginger beer.
If you're a lager drinker basically all the 0.0% beers ive had taste pretty much exactly the same and they have that nice beer garden in summer refreshing feel to them. I see there's also ciders and fruity ciders that do alcohol free now as well.
I don't vouch for the spirit equivalents personally, and I haven't tried any wines.
My husband has been making me a non alcoholic mojito. It’s Mexican lime soda, muddled lime and mint with agave syrup over ice. It’s so good that he’s started drinking them with me 😂
Alcohol free beers I like are Lucky Saint, Clwb Tropica Non-Alc, and weihenstephaner alcohol free (a lot of wheat beers actually go alcohol free quite well).
Failing that, a tonic and lime is surprisingly convincing without the gin. As is a coke with a lot of lime. Or a virgin Mary if you're into that kind of thing.
We love Becks Blue. Much nicer than normal Becks and so refreshing and crisp. Actually hits the spot when you fancy a nice lager but can’t/don’t want to drink.
My wife is pregnant - she has been enjoying
Highpoint Apertif with Tonic
Clean Co Alcohol Free Gin & Tonic
Tanquerey 0.0 Gin & Tonic
Lucky Saint 0.5% Lager
Beavertown Lazer Crush 0.5% IPA
Or sometimes just a Tonic Water with a dash of Agostura Bitters
There are so many great options out there nowadays - enjoy
Recently discovered Brooklyn Special Effects. Don’t think it matters massively but it is 0.4% but tastes good and available at Tescos…
https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/products/307745115?sc_cmp=ppc*GHS+-+Grocery+-+Alcohol*MPX_SEA_All_OT_Smart+Shopping+Alcohol_Online+Budget_1009392*Alcohol*PRODUCT_GROUP307745115*&ds_rl=1116322&gbraid=0AAAAADiyNavvNUHvTSjJkhqBaIM_Pd-et&gclid=CjwKCAjw9pGjBhB-EiwAa5jl3Olnoy86wXma_QGMp_1vF1s8L8zi30hqDj-JBU89-2-tJuRfQguUVxoC0twQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds
Stryyk not rum is good if you like dark rum.
I did drink a loooot of tonic water and orange juice too, the quinine in the tonic water helps with restless legs too!
I hope you have an uneventful pregnancy and a safe birth x
I would look out for a non alcoholic red vermouth (I think Martini makes one). That's really good with soda water, a twist of lemon or lime and even a glug of non-alcoholic prosecco if you have some.
Did a half marathon last year and knew the best thing to do was cut myself off from alcohol a few days before but the run was on a Sunday and I like a couple of beers on a Saturday night so wanted to trick myself into thinking it was a normal Saturday. Had Erdinger and Heniekan 0% versions and they were alright. Also I know everyone dunks on Brew Dog (not without reason) but apparently Nanny State is ok.
My sister doesn’t drink and says most alcohol free beers are decent. Spirits hit and miss. Alcohol free wine is apparently rank. She likes Nosecco though.
I lived in Germany for a few years and at the end of all the sporting events you usually got a 500ml of Erdinger 0% instead of water. Does the job perfectly!
I did the Yorkshire 10 mile race last year and Erdinger were a sponsor so you got a 500ml tin of it at the end for its isotonic properties... Same with the Hull 10k in 2019 (I think) - was pretty much exactly what I was gagging for after those races.
Water. Cawston press apple and ginger/apple and rhubarb. Straight apple juice. Decaf coffee. Fruity teas. Squash with lemonade.
There are way more alcohol free alternatives to alcoholic drinks than there used to be. If they say alcohol free then it's below a certain legal limit, and is no more likely to harm you or the foetus than a banana. Different supermarkets tend to have different selections so explore until you find versions you're happy with of the alcohol you usually like.
Thatchers zero is delicious! I pretty much never drink alcohol so can’t say how it compares to the alcoholic version.
For refreshing drinks that aren’t trying to be something they’re not, something like bitter lemon or flavoured tonic water both hit the spot. Grapefruit and sparkling water is great too, for me lemonade is too sweet. Mostly I just drink sparkling water with a wedge of lemon in it. Can’t get much more refreshing!
It's not really trying to be alcohol but the Belvoir non alcoholic peach bellini is lovely. They have a few others that I haven't tried but I'm sure would be nice too.
The Kylie Minogue non alcoholic rose prosecco is good, too.
Some of them are delicious. A few I've had do have a slightly odd aftertaste although most are only £3 a bottle so not expensive to experiment. Personally I love the popping cork and using a champagne flute to feel fancy, like I'm having a proper drink!
Surprised to see little mention of Heineken Zero.
I drink every weekend but still rate a couple of cans of Heineken Zero during in the week.
Apparently instead of making a drink that tastes like beer, they make real Heineken then withdraw the alcohol. Could be nonsense though
Crodino - you wouldn't know it doesn't have alcohol. It's lovely stuff made in Italy, vibrant orange and needs a dash of soda and maybe some fruit.
This is a test for your partner - it's really, really hard to find in the UK. Lidl do a fake one that isn't as good but is still OK.
Orange, grapefruit, lemon, lime, literally any citrus fruit that’s unwaxed and really fresh (solid feeling).
Cut the rind off with a knife, avoiding the white as much as possible, and squeeze the oils from the outside into tonic water, like good tonic water, or Aldi’s version of good tonic water, and loads of ice.
If you want mocktail versions of any of these then let me know because I’ve been making drinks for 15-odd years. These really don’t need booze:
Pornstar martini, Cosmopolitan, Espresso Martini, Dark ‘n’ Stormy, Mojito, Caipirinha, Margaritas, Bramble, daiquiris, Pimms. If there’s a drink you like it can probably be mocked. I’ll put the recipe up.
I had a non alcoholic Negroni in Blacklock in London with Three Spirit Livener in it which was very nice. I was tempted to buy a bottle but was put off by the price. Also be warned it goes off because there's no alcohol content.
According to the menu it had the following in it:
Three Spirit Livener, berry shrub, verjus & orange
I own an alcohol-free bar, so feel suitably qualified to comment!
Lucky Saint is my go to beer. Its amazing. Probably my favourite beer, alcoholic or not.
Kopparberg AF ciders are also fairly similar to their alcoholic varieties.
If you like cocktails, search for Lyre's spirits. They taste so close to the alcoholic spirits they're trying to replace, just without the kick of alcohol.
Mockingbird Tequila was the best one we found but they've sadly stopped making it, but if you can find it anywhere that's a great one.
Feel free to DM me if you have any specific questions or if you're after a particular drink.
A friend gave me a Big Drop Citra IPA last night and it almost tasted like the real thing. Looking it up it is described as "never more than 0.5%" so probably not appropriate in this case.
Heineken silver, drinking one right now. Delicious.
Would also say lucky saint. Many a drunken night where I have had to spike my friends with sobriety just so they can get in the next place or not kicked out! Never noticed the difference
Can’t say I’ve tried many but I did have a couple of Amstel 0.0 as I was driving back. They were fairly nice and hardly noticed a difference (though Amstel isn’t one I drink normally)
- Best I’ve tried is a brand called Brulo. They do them in Meat Liquor restaurants. Taste just like a fruity IPA.
- Brooklyn Special Effects is a really nice pale ale style no/low beer. Tasted more like a red ale but it tastes very much like a beer.
- Paradise Citra from Big Drop brewery is ok if you want more of a citrus flavour. I found it a bit watery though and the flavour a bit weak.
- Heard good things about Days too but not got round to trying it yet.
- I’ve never really warmed to Lucky Saint. Never been able to finish a can as the taste just isn’t there for me.
- Of the bog-standard brands I don’t mind the Heineken and Peroni ones if you want something that tastes of lager. I’d even go as far as to say the non-alcoholic Heineken is better than the alcoholic version.
- Worst I’ve had is non-alcoholic Doom Bar. Tasted like mouldy bread.
Have you tried the mystery flavour purple one? Tastes like strawberries and cream with a twist of citrus. I think the fruit used is Soursop / Guanabana.
Lucky Saint beer! The one and only supreme 0%.
I’ve been sober for 3 and a half years now… didn’t start delving into the 0% world for the first probably 18 months because I didn’t want it to trigger me into getting a real beer.
But yeah, Lucky Saint is the closest to real beer in my opinion!
Try ginger ale or ginger beer. I had whooping cough a while back so was on the heavy antibiotics where you really couldn't have alcohol. Ginger has a similar burn to alcohol which at least tampered by desire for an alcoholic drink
Best by far is Erdinger, the one in the blue bottle. Adnams Ghostship tastes quite nice also. Guinness 0 is great, Bavaria 0% is a good cheap one. I quite liked the prohibition Bud (weirdly theres an inverse thing where the worse the beer, the better the zero)
Just a wee disclaimer these may be 0.5% alcohol, but i assume that means theyre ok because as I understand it's so little alcohol your body instantly processes it
I've been making SO MANY virgin mojitos since I got preg. I know it's not beer. I do like the Old Mout Berries and Cherries alcohol free cider!
The 0% beers all exasperated the metallic taste in my mouth. Shy.
Heineken 0.0 isn't bad. It's my drink of choice if we stop off at a pub whilst we're driving about. Lidl do their own brand 0% lager which is really good.
I usually drink 0% rekordelig strawberry & lime if I’m in a fruity mood, or Heineken & corona 0% , tastes the same as the one with alcohol. I haven’t drank in over a year so 0% are my go to, however, now I’m pregnant too I find that most 0% give me heartburn and make me feel dehydrated
IMHO…
Bud and Heineken 0 are good
Strykk is a good rum replacement
Most alcohol free IPAs are good if that’s your thing
Old Mout and Kopparberg are decent
I haven’t tried wine so can’t comment
Guinness 0 is alright
Avoid becks blue and san miguel, gin and bitters
i gave up drinking a year ago but sill fancy a beer now and then, i find the Heineken 0% beers are lovely, feels like im having a beer without the awful hangover in the morning.
Soft drinks aren't really available where I live (Spain) like they are in the UK. But passion fruit and also pomegranate are like crack cocaine to me now.
Honestly, a lot of them are better than you’d think these days. I had a few a few years back and they sucked, but recently started some medication I can’t drink on, and have been finding them pretty solid.
I will say, alcohol free wines are generally shit though. They’re not even close. I mean, they taste fine - they’re not *unpleasant*, they’re just *not wine* lol.
Spirits are a bit eh as well. They sort of work, but they’re also the same price as real spirits - and some are super hit and miss. If you’re a huge gin and tonic fan then maybe it’s worth giving a couple a try, but otherwise I’d pass.
Beer wise, guinness 0 is probably the best. It’s just the closest to the real thing out of all the ones I’ve had. Like, I’ve had worse tasting pints of ACTUAL guinness at pubs, than the guinness 0 - especially if somewhere has it on one of those semi-draught machine things. It’s pretty damn good from that.
And beyond that, most of the bottled 0% beers I’ve had have been fine. Peroni 0 and heineken 0 are both not quite the real thing, but they’re close enough that if I was given it blindly, I’d say ‘this beer’s a bit odd’, and not ‘this isn’t beer’. Same for a lot of the bottled IPA’s I’ve tried - they all sort of manage to hit the same spot as a beer does, even if not quite as well.
Cider seems to work alright as well, but I’ve not tried many of them!
I gave up alcohol 2 years ago but I love the taste of beer and cider, best cider is the koppaberg strawberry and lime 0 alcohol and the best non alcoholic beer I think it s stella
I've recently stopped drinking and it's really hard to find 0% beers that don't just taste like stale fizzy water. The best I've found IMO is Thatcher's 0% cider. At least it tastes more or less like cider even if the lack of alcohol is still apparent.
Apfelschorle! It's a German soft drink which is delicious. You can make a decent approximation by ordering half a glass of apple juice and half a glass of soda/sparkling water. Not too sweet and a bit more excitement than plain old water.
Freedam and lucky saint beers are the best. Nosecco is pretty good as is the non alcoholic gins. I’ve been off the booze for 2.5 years now though so at a point now where I can’t really remember how the real stuff tastes. Nothing has ever come close to red wine though and it’s the one thing I miss
Guinness 0% tastes just like the normal version. Any beers from Mash Gang if you’re looking for alcohol free craft beer. Adnams Ghost Ship has a 0% version. I give up alcohol for lent every year so I have tried a few! Hahaha
If looking for an alcohol substitute, ive really been enjoying Nosecco on it’s own, and making mocktail Hugo’s with nosecco and elderflower syrup/cordial and sparkling water. Cannot advise if this is fine for pregnant women to drink, so please double check that with an expert!
As someone who doesn’t really drink in general, i only drink water or flavoured water in the house, or if im out and don’t want to get rinsed for a mocktail I’ll drink soda water and lime.
Air-up are really (surprisingly) good!! It's a water bottle which you get scented pods for and it makes you think there's a taste. No calories, all natural stuff. I was very skeptical but my wife bought one and it's been fantastic!!
Also just came back from Romania and they are big on home made lemonade over there. It's really refreshing and you can add different fruit and/or syrups to it. You can also add soda water to make it fizzy if you like. I'm getting to the age where I can't drink every day so alternatives like that are great
Elderflower cordial and slim line tonic - muddle a bit of mint while you are at it if you can be bothered (and then it's just apple juice for the full virgin mojito experience) but you can get away with the cordial and tonic
A lot of the 0% gins are good. I preferred Tanquery to Gordon’s but both are fine.
For beer, Kaiser is good and Lucky Saint is also fine.
Someone else has mentioned fruit ciders, which I drank in the summer while pregnant. They were nice and refreshing, without being overly sweet.
If you like craft IPA type beer, Beavertown’s Lazer Crush scratches that itch better than any other.
Be careful with Brewdog they stretch the 0.5% leeway in the wrong direction for those of us avoiding alcohol for health reasons.
For lager Lucky Saint is good (I don’t like lager much but it’s good!)
Steer clear of 0% cider. I had a Thatchers the other day and it got drain poured after a few sips as it tasted like feet. I’d stick to Apple juice and soda water if that’s your tipple.
Otherwise: Ginger beer, lemonade with lime cordial and Lilt are my go toos (not mixed together!)
Fever Tree Tonic waters and sodas are pretty good and satisfy my urge for alcohol when I'm cutting down. We often drink the no alcohol "proseccos" too and the best one of those is Nozecco in my opinion. Obviously not the same but good enough.
Non alcoholic kopperberg is the best. Tastes exactly like the boozy version, and has the added bonus of not making me anywhere near as bloated and gassy. And it's half the price too
I quite like the ghost ship 0%, I've found that if I try and drink the 0% of anything I normally drink it just tastes like watered down pish, so the key is to drink something you wouldn't normally go for.
If you like wine, fizz, the Freixenet sparking wines are the best I’ve tried and much nicer than Nosecco. In terms of beers, Lidl’s lager is surprisingly good. Erdinger, Free Damm, Bavaria are all favourites of mine. Heineken is alright. The gins are usually nice. M&S do a good gin which isn’t as expensive as some.
If it’s a soft drink, I love Crodino. It always feels like a fancy option. I’m also quite partial to a soda water with fresh lime.
I'm not sure if it's been said but there's one called speak easy IPA by tiny rebel
It's really refreshing, best I've had anyway but is 0.5% not completely AF
Sipsmiths fake gin. It’s distilled and has a very distinct orange/citrus twang. It’s really nice. Didn’t like the garden version but the citrus one is lovely
Tempest Brewery do a couple of great tasting 0% beers, highly recommend.
now there is so many craft breweries a lot will do a decent no-low alcohol version
I don't drink much anyway so had already tried alcohol free gin before I was pregnant, and continued to enjoy it through pregnancy. Having it in a nice glass with ice, a mixer (I like flavoured sparkling water or diet lemonade) and some berries if you're feeling fancy, allows you to feel like you're joining in with drinking on those special occasions.
I find a pint of fresh orange and lemonade with lots of ice is really refreshing. When I was pregnant I also ate a lot of fruit pastille ice lollies. Not a drink but still a treat for the mouth.
Crodino - if you like things like Aperol or Campari. Bitter sweet sparkling aperitif drink, over ice in a wineglass with a slice of orange, really nice. It’s also made by the Campari group.
There’s tons of great zero beers on the market now
Fruit ciders too if that’s more your thing
I’ve not found a decent zero% wine but the beer is getting very close to the real thing
Theres a few a i could mention but i wont, i think the closer to the genuine article the higher the risk there is of saying "time for a real one"
I love mocktails, but the closer they are to the real deal the worse my craving for the real deal is, for me i just now avoid all non-alcohol alternatives as dangerous to my mental well being.
No offence to those it works for, go for it, just for this alcohol-cat close enough to 99% too close.
If you like wine, you can look for Nozecco in Tesco. I wish I knew about this when I was pregnant. It tastes really nice and I am quite fussy when it comes to alcohol free stuff.
The best 0% beer I’ve had is Brulo’s Lust For Life DDH Pale Ale.
Actually tastes like a good craft beer. Brewed in Edinburgh but shipped throughout the UK. Occasionally available on draft in good craft beer bars.
Free Damm is the best alcohol free lager.
Lucky Saint is nice and malty, so not to everyone's taste.
Brooklyn Special Effects is a bit hoppier and is very nice but has to be drank cold. Once it sits for a bit, it is rank.
Stowford press low alcohol is really good. I used to drink the zero alcohol sparkling wine from Sainsbury’s and mix it with juice like a mimosa type thing. Quite a few of the zero beers taste good. Heineken, becks, San Miguel were some I tried and enjoyed. Not just limited to pregnancy. Sometimes you’re driving or don’t fancy an alcoholic drink.
If you want some bubbles, this stuff - Oddbird Blancs de Blancs was surprisingly good when my wife was pregnant:
https://drydrinker.com/products/oddbird-blanc-de-blancs-sparkling-wine-750ml-non-alcoholic-wine-3-or-6-case-size
Not cheap but you get what you pay for.
Fortnums also do a very nice sparkling tea that’s not quite a mimic of sparkling wine but hits a lot of the same notes without trying to be de alcoholised wine:
https://www.fortnumandmason.com/fortnum-s-sparkling-tea-0-abv
For beer Low Tide made most of my favourites when I was doing no alcohol in solidarity:
https://drydrinker.com/products/lowtide-mixed-case-0-5-low-alcohol-beer-8-x-440ml
Robinson's do a posh lime and mint cordial. My MIL makes it with soda water and mint leaves to make a very refreshing virgin mojito.
I'm pregnant too and weirdly I really want an alcoholic drink? Very bizarre as I pretty much never drank alcohol before getting pregnant. The body wants what it can't have.
When I was off drink for a bit I wanted something completely different, so I made up some mango lassi which I'd not tried before. Absolutely delicious stuff.
Rochester Organic Mulled Berry Punch - its kind of like a mulled wine but very tasty, also it has herbs and other bits that make it really hit the taste buds, so its got a kind of non-alcoholic kick. Its best served hot, but it kind of works chilled with ice too. You can get it at holland and barratt.
Find a nearest polish shop and try to find alcohol free Lech beer. You'll thank me later. There is wide variety of alcohol free polish beer. All much tastier than stuff available in supermarkets.
I like the BrewDog range of alcohol free beers. They are all pretty good in their own way, but I particularly like Elvis Juice, which has a grapefruity taste (which is odd as I don't like grapefruit much). My wife can't stand it, though.
Brooklyn low alcohol IPA is also great (Special Effects).
If you want something that tastes more like a grown up cocktail, you can make a Rock Shandy, which is 50/50 water and lemonade, with a damn good slug of angostura.
(All of the above are technically low alcohol, not zero, but so is orange juice, so I'm assuming you're not too worried about that).
I've also got all the ingredients for a low alcohol Aperol Spritz, but I haven't tried it yet. I suspect it'll be horrible.
idk if they're 0% or 0.5% but Brewdog's Lost AF is good, as is everything from Big Drop. Big Drop only do low alcohol beer and they're easily the best I've had. Full of sugar tho.
Also like the Ghostship 0% and Erdinger 0%
Hey Momma! I have a few suggestions for you since people seem to not really be taking your question that seriously.
Grab some grenadine, sprite and maraschino cherries. You can make a Sherley Temple Cocktail, sweet and definitely has a cocktail feel visually.
Ice Berry Cocktail, Tonic Water, a little lime/lemon juice, frozen berries of your choice and a dash of salt. Nice and sour, tonic water makes it feel like a proper drink.
Virgin Bloody Mary or Caesar cocktail, celery salt rim, a few dashes of Worcestershire sauce, a dash of tobasco, top with Clamato or Tomato juice and a stick of celery or pickled bean.
Lastly, being pregnant can be stressful often I found my alcohol craving when pregnant was always in line with stress from a difficult pregnancy. Make sure you are taking time for yourself and self care. Love ya future mama good luck
The 0% Guinness is brilliant (assuming you like Guinness in the first place), Lucky Saint is great (low alcohol rather than 0% though), Becks Blue is pretty good out of the regular lagers, Peroni is grim, the Brewdog ones are quite good (although I avoid giving those tossers any of my money), the beavertown one was quite nice.
Source, my wife is pregnant and I've been 'supporting' her / stealing her drinks.
Before I could legally drink I loved the alcohol free kopparbergs and now I am of legal age of drinking they both taste pretty similar so I'd happily drink them regularly like pepsi if they weren't so expensive.
Northern Monk's Holy Faith IPA
Fell Brewery Beck Pale
Ridgeside Light & Sound IPA
Big Drop Galactic Stout
Ilkley Brewery Nowt Mary Stout
Maisels Weisse AF
Hands down the best AFs out there. I've tried a lot.
OK, so 0.5% all, but that's a background level of alcohol that you'll find in a carton of fruit juice, or a ripe banana etc.
Will have zero effect on you or child.
Big Drop do some excellent 0% beers.
Freedam / lucky saint are probably the best lagers I've come across.
The 0% gins don't really taste of gin so I'd probably just grab a tonic water with a splash of angustura bitters.
Sainsbury's do an ok sparkling white wine.
Wouldn't bother with no alcohol cider buy some apple tango instead.
Erdinger is the best of the ones I've tried. But it's a bit like being asked what your preferred steamed vegetable is, brocolli or cauliflower? Ultimately they're all a bit bland.
I'm surprised no one's mentioned [Drop Bear Beer](https://www.dropbearbeers.com/) yet. They are all great but my fave is the New World Lager.
Also (bear with me on this one) [Kylie Minogue's 0% sparkling rose](https://www.kylieminoguewines.com/product/no-alcohol-sparkling-rose/)
Also [Belle & Co](https://www.belleandcobubbly.com/products) sparkling white and rose
For ones that aren't *trying* to be alcoholic-drink-like, some recent discoveries of mine that I love are:
[Double Dutch](https://doubledutchdrinks.com/collections/our-drinks)
[Nix & Kix](https://nixandkix.com/)
[Punchy Drinks](https://www.punchydrinks.com/)
I've been told Free Damm lager is pretty good. You can get it from most big supermarkets.
Sparkling tea is also worth a try. If you're feeling extravagant Fortnum and Mason do a nice one for £18.
I can answer this! I went on an alcohol free beer journey after a heavy lockdown and the one O eventually landed on was “Jever Fun”. Runner up is Henekein alcohol free.
Bavaria is really nice, or my local has alcohol free Cobra so I’ve been drinking that recently too. Both really nice. I’m sure if you had a proper pint then followed it with one of those alcohol free drinks you’d be able to tell the difference, but otherwise it’s all good stuff.
St Clemon's. Orange juice and lemonade, basically a fancy orangina. On a hot summer's day a nice tall ice cold glass is the best. Especially due to my alcohol allergy, I have this weird thing happen whenever I drink alcohol whereby once I start drinking I break out in handcuffs and usually wake up feeling dread, shame and covered in my own piss and possibly vomit. Ah alcoholism what fond memories I don't have with you. 7 years sober in 6 days.
I don't get 0% alcohol drinks.
If it's a soft drink, your after then coke tastes much better than any 0% beer.
But I can't drink my emotions away on Dr Pepper!
If you like wine, I tried all of them (or so it feels!) and the nicest fake wine is Nozeco. Hardy's Alcohol Free Chardonnay is also nice.
Avoid Eisberg, it tastes awful.
These aren't related to my taste in alcohol, because I don't like fizzy alcoholic wines or Chardonnay. But for whatever reason those are the ones that taste the nicest once you've removed the alcohol.
Alcohol free beer is really easy to get right and there are loads of nice ones. If you make them really cold, most of them taste pretty good.
I stopped drinking a while ago; I like Gordon's 0% & a posh tonic, a NOTgin and tonic. I also had quite a bit of "just tonic please" when pregnant.
Also Lidl has a not-prosecco called Belle & co which has a nice taste quite like real prosecco and is only about £3
Heineken 's 0% is quite a nice light lagery taste for a sunny day, good in a shandy too.
In my experience (any opinion) having been pregnant twice (breastfeeding my 5 month old now):
Nozeco - check Amazon they have a few flavours. Normal, pink, aperol, bucks fizz and Bellini!!
Schloer pink bubbly fizz (has been on offer for £2.50 in Aldi and on occasion Tesco - my favourite)
Clean & co. Spiced rum is great with coke zero. They also do others vodka, tequila and gin - I tried the pink gin and it's better on its own rather than mixed with tonic or lemonade, with it being non-alcoholic it's not strong enough in my opinion.
Bottlegreen have some nice ones but expensive for what it is.
Fizzero from M&S is tasty, have normal and pink!
The Gordon's non-alcoholic G&T cans are good if you like botanical.
I have a rotating selection of zero cans (coke, Dr Pepper, fanta)
Aldi have started doing mocktails, although very sweet!
Others have already been mentioned but Becks blue, Guinness and Brewdog beers are good. Adnams Ghost Ship is my husband's favourite (on offer sometimes at Tesco for £1)
More are coming out all the time so haven't tried them all (yet haha)
Cobra is probably the best lager I've had. Other than that, just stick with soft drinks. The Mocktails are the same price as the alcoholic version and are just fruit juice and shit. The faux spirits are an utter ripoff.
Most alcohol free beers are pretty good.
If you like your bubbles, codorniu had a zero alcohol "cava" which is great. Get the white. Not the rose. Most alcohol free wines are disgusting, this one is nice.
martini also now make their alcohol free vermouths you can use as mixers for cocktails
Aperitifs: look for Sanbitter or Crodino.
I find anything with a flavour that overpowers the alcohol does the trick best when I’m the designated driver. Virgin mocktails, particularly anything with a spice
Martini Vibrante is an excellent aperitif at a decent price in the no/low spirits section at superstores. If you like gin the 0% Tanqueray’ are not bad.
The red wine and the guinness are the only ones that taste convincing.
Oh and the beer obviously but I can't drink beer the hops gives me headache even with zeros
Depends what you liked before I guess. My partner is pregnant and enjoys [this](https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/product/drinks-/sainsburys-medium-dry-low-alcohol-apple-cider-500ml)cider they do in Sainsbury's it has 0.9% alcohol in it, which I'm sure is low enough not to count, she only ever has one, but says it's the closest to the real thing that she's had.
Alcohol free mojitos or bloody Mary's are very easy to make and taste close to the real thing, litterally just leave out the booze.
If you like craft beer some of the non alcoholic IPAs are good, I find the taste of hops makes up for the lack of alcohol better than the lagers which all seem a bit bland IMO.
For wine there's a brand called Odd bird that's quite good, you can find it on Amazon. The wines do tend to be a bit disappointing but we found these better than most. We didn't like Nosecco.
Heineken zero is probably the best AF lager I’ve had from the big names. Brewdogs alcohol free stuff is pretty decent too.
The alcohol free gins are ok but seems ridiculous they basically cost the same as normal gin - I thought most of the cost on alcohol was tax? Find you have to add quite a lot to make it taste of anything other than tonic so the bottle doesn’t last long
I like alcohol free lager type beer, it’s not too sweet. Also quite enjoy a campari equivalent called Aecorn that Waitrose used to do. Ideally with fresh OJ and sparkling water. I haven’t found an alcohol free wine I’d go back to but nosecco is pretty fun.
Have you tried those Seedlip alcohol free spirits? They are reasonably pricey considering that there’s no actual booze in them, but they are nice and summery on ice and give you that feeling of drinking something slightly special.
I like Caleno Light and Zesty with tonic. It gives you a bit of the mouth feel of gin and tonic and takes away that overly sharp and fizzy taste of just tonic.
It's very marmite (i.e. love it or hate it, doesn't taste like it) but I think Leffe 0% has something going for it.
Guinness zero is great if you like stout.
Of the 0% lagers I’ve tried, I’d moretti zero, free damm, and lucky saint are my favourites.
For other ales, beavertown brewery and brewdog make some solid 0% beer.
Some of the 0% ciders I’ve tried are pretty good (but unfortunately they can be rammed with sugar).
I’ve not much experience with 0% wine and spirits, but there appears to be plenty of options available in supermarkets.
You might also enjoy kombucha or making mocktails as an alcohol alternative. And of course, there’s always fruit juice, water, fizzy drinks, tea, and coffee.
The 0% Adnams Ghost Ship isn't too bad, most low alcohol ales I've tried haven't been that great all too sweet for my tastes.
Low alcohol European lagers are a little better, Adli have got an inoffensive Rheinbacker Pilsner.
You have to watch out for that in a lot of low alcohol beers. Erdinger’s effort is rammed full of sugar - I think they technically call it an ‘energy drink’ although it’s marketed as low alcohol beer.
As mentioned about I quite like Lucky Saint. Infinity IPA isn’t too bad either.
Recently visited the booze free shop in soho called Club Soda, they have an amazing variety of alcohol free drinks, they might be available online to order.

If at a function where you may not wish to be seen obviously drinking a soft drink, I like Becks Blue or Heineken Zero. Or a posh tonic water. But there is now a pretty big choice of true zero alcohol drinks. But will resist paying the same price for an alcohol free gin as the real thing.
Noughty af fizz is 0%, they have wines as well but they can't guarantee 0% and only <0.5%. They don't have loads of sugar in and taste close to the real thing.
for ale like stuff, any Low Tide brewing are excellent. The beavertown 0% is also good. check out the wise bartender online shop - there's loads of good stuff. I usually get a mixed case.
Nozecco is great.
You can also get a rose style kombucha which as that fermented punch that 0% often lack.
I was on holiday with my grandkids who are in my care atm and really fancied a drink so tried Corona Cero and was pleasantly surprised, the bar served it with the slice of lime you get with corona and I couldn't tell the difference.
I've taken to drinking it at home too
nozecco, or free damn lager were good for me when I had to have no booze.
sometimes its the fizz that you miss, get yourself a bunch of those flavoured fizzy waters.
or get a sodastream and go mental with the cordials.
alcohol free cider I also tried, honestly just get apple juice.
