heck- even worse is that business script deal where a town passes a ordnance that allows businesses to return change that is"town script " My memory is a bit rusty- but I went on a 5th grade school ski trip to Italy when I lived germany Parents paid up front for hotel, travel, ski/lift fees We got there and every one was having a good time. only after kids kept getting change in a different currency that the adults quickly determined was script and not legal tender did things get tense kids were handing over 5 and 10 dollar bils ( local equivalent) to buy a 15 cent candy bar expecting change in same currency used ( i am pretty sure it was Marks since this place was pretty close to germany ) when the adults caught on to what the local business people were doing to the dumb American 5th graders- they wouldn't let the kids into the shops. dont recall any further details.

Cuban sandwiches. From using wrong kind of bread, going "fancy" with type of mayonnaise and/or mustard, using any cheese but Swiss, wrong cuts of meat, dragging the sandwich through the garden, just popping it in the oven ( not pressing it correctly ), cutting the sandwich the wrong way, wrong type/cut of pickles - etc. And the sad thing is how many local resturants here in Florida fail at making a proper cuban sandwich.

Did y’all think Fonzie was cool when you were growing up?

Posted by Groovy-Pancakes@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 3527 comments

lothcent@reddit

nah. I was a 7 year old American kid going to a DOD school on base with other American kids. My interactions with local German kids my age revolved around Soccer, swimming, and volksmarches. Television shows never once entered our Television viewership. The only media I remember ever talking to local German kids about was in 1977. Star Wars.

between my father who came from the projects and got a masters at William and Mary and was a career army officer- and my mom who was a southern country girl where all of the children got degrees despite growing up in an austere environment- I learned a bunch of life skills from an early age. I was cooking around 7 or 8 years old. Changing tires at 10 or 11, changing oil- about same age, chopping firewood with axe and maul at about 14.... and so many other skills that a lot of people never learned I am not going to lie- I really hated having to do those chores and such at the time. I wanted to go play or goof around with my buddies. I was allowed goofing off time- but it was also balanced out with the whole learning skills that school is not teaching you.

I have seen people parking at pumps- eating lunch, doom scrolling on their phones, taking a nap/nodding off, etc. This is Florida- i get that it is hot- but there are plenty of other places with shade to do all of that stuff. Way too many people in Florida think that they are special when in fact they are not. parking at gas pumps is yet another sign of the disintegration of a working society and a deep dive into anarchy.

ive never been married, no kids, my house is paid off and I have no crippling debts and I have had a steady job since I was 20. I've tried relationships and wow- they just keep getting more bizarre. The single mother with kids looking for a wallet. the single mother with kids who wanted me to sell my house and move in with her to pay off her condo in a sleepy retirement type town. The single mom who had 2 different psych meds from two different doctors that didn't know she was doubling up- and she would alternate and double up her doses ( and chaos resulted ) the single mother with the need for constant hand holding ( calling at all hours of the day, having "emergencies " to try to get me to drive 45 in middle of a work night ) yeah- I haven't given up. it is just that the available market is flooded with poorly maintained models that will require a lot of time and money to fix - and there is no guarantee that the time and effort will work.

memorizing phone numbers of your bestie. Writing down and carrying phone numbers ( and addresses ) of everyone you ever wanted to talk with later. walking, biking, skateboarding, etc- when you wanted to hang out with friends-> which led to - getting a driver's license so not only could you go visit friends- but you could pack them in and go visit more friends walking down the street and someone from school recognizing you and stopping to give you a ride The ability to have a party that was not segregated - it was just a party made up of people who all sort of knew each other because of school or church or neighborhood giving out mix tapes that actually conveyed a message/meaning to the recipient and all of the above are the "safe things" that we did.

So my childhood TV memory is very sparse. ( it was the 70s. - so kids playing outside till the street lights came on was a real thing )
