Garden Hose Heroics

for context, this happened today: a small plane crashed in Wesley Chapel, FL. One person died in the crash. I took these screenshots from a TikTok video. The actual fire dept showed up right after this was taken.

Fuck off..? A plane crashed in his or his neighbor’s yard. He could be doing nothing, or he could be doing what he can with his garden hose. He’s doing what he can. Why is anyone shaming and making fun of him?
Jaded-Owl8312@reddit
Thank you for calling brain dead people out.

Something has happened and the intelligence and ethics of redditers has totally cratered. Reddit has had plenty of problems and bad behavior in the past, something has happened in the past couple years because I don’t remember it ever being quite this dumb.
swift1883@reddit
It’s not that hard: digitalization went too far somewhere during corona, and now we have tech bros, who are above the law, who depend on our frustrations, addictions and gullibility to make their money.
Janky_Pants@reddit
Also when you have a president who displays no empathy, people do the same.

You’re correct that these things happened, but that doesn’t explain the lack of intelligence or ethics constantly demonstrated.
massunderestmated@reddit
I think it does, frankly. The online world is a minmaxing game now. That leaves an awful lot of highly intelligent people with zero charisma to make their points, and a lot of highly charismatic people with zero intelligence to apply to a given situation. The regular people with common sense get shouted or voted out of the conversations more times than not. Ethics, at best, is used as a cudgel to beat people down.
Face88888888@reddit
Didn’t expect a fallout reference in this sub.
Ataneruo@reddit
Very interesting comment, I hadn’t thought about it that way 👍🏽
the_Q_spice@reddit
The influx of internet users during COVID really exposed a lot of this.
People need to remember that the median educational level in the US fluctuates between 3 years of high school (no diploma), and about 1 semester of post secondary education.
The bleak part is that post secondary education includes both community college, and trades apprenticeships.
Basically, the bulk of the US population never got an education that challenged them to synthesize new knowledge - only regurgitate facts… and we wonder why the internet seems so unintelligent…
Ataneruo@reddit
And then they missed > a year of even that
Extinction-Entity@reddit
3-7 IQ point loss per covid infection. Some people didn’t have much to begin with.
kitchenpatrol@reddit
Google results return Reddit threads for almost all queries now. This has led to a huge influx of people that would have never found their way here.
heyinternetman@reddit
I’m not sure redditors were ever particularly well known for their ethics
Livingforabluezone@reddit
It’s the youths. Never a straight answers, everything is a joke, group think.
cat_prophecy@reddit
It's been increasing lately. People have the mentality of "if something doesn't fix the problem 100% the first time then it isn't worth doing". Basically they wouldn't be happy unless homeboy here had a full pumper truck setup ready to go..
GrandMarquisMark@reddit
I totally agree. Half the comments on reddit have "lol" as a period.
NegativeAd9542@reddit
people on this app are extremely rude and judgemental. its disgusting at times
0------------------0@reddit
Judging posts and comments through upvotes and downvotes is a core feature of Reddit. This is why others don’t have downvotes and have other reactions. Reddit already went through various phases and judgement remains a defining feature. So if you are hoping to minimize judgment, the general wisdom would be to use an app with interaction features that align with what you are looking for.
bigfatfun@reddit
Sadly I can’t remember a time when it wasn’t just like this.
andin321@reddit
At least the guy did something other than stand there with his phone taking a video of it burning.
Milked_Cows@reddit
Would we rather society be victim to diffusion of responsibility, or let people do what they can to help? Cant have both

I used to buy hay from him. He passed away in a car accident a few years ago. Big loss for the ag community and was one to introduce no till farming on a major scale here in the US.

I don't see anyone else out there with a charged hose line.
Get some, sir. Stay safe.
Unusual-Economist288@reddit
Everyone who calls pilots heroes for missing things on the ground…uh, if he/she could control the airplane, it would still be flying. Pure luck where it augurs in.
SiBloGaming@reddit
Or get this, malfunctions are a thing and might cause a crash, no matter how good the pilot is?
Unusual-Economist288@reddit
You missed my point. Must’ve intentionally flown past it…
SaltLakeBear@reddit
Almost always, but it has been documented to have happened at least once. Look up the crash of an F3H Demon flown by Albert Hickman, who could have ejected when the engine failed but instead made sure to fly it into the ground instead of likely hitting a school.
Unusual-Economist288@reddit
Ok, I’ll give you that, especially with a power loss.
SaltLakeBear@reddit
Yeah, very much an edge case scenario, and you're right 99.9% of the time, but it's one of those interesting "never say never, never say always" exceptions.
cgar23@reddit
I mean, it's better than nothing, right? Why are we blasting this guy? I don't think he was under the impression he was getting the plane back into the air, but why not try to limit damage to the evidence of whatever happened, body (in this case sadly), and surrounding property?
Annual-Advisor-7916@reddit
I'd go as far as saying it's not just "better than nothing" but actually effective in preventing the fire from spreading.
lovestobitch-@reddit
The lady who owned the house indicated her porch was starting to catch fire. Lol she grabbed her little fire extinguisher to help. She indicated the pilot did a good job from crashing into the house/neighbors house. The interview was on reuters tv channel.
Makkaroni_100@reddit
Inhaling this smoke isnt a good idea. So better stay away from it if there are no people left. Still would not call him stupid.
MinionAgent@reddit
I think he is probably doing it to prevent the fire catching his house.
discographyA@reddit
Keyboard warriors berate people for standing idly by tragic events, keyboard warriors berate people likely trying to just stop the spread of flames to adjoining neighbors, etc. Can’t win with people.
cat_prophecy@reddit
It's the same answer to the question of "why haven't people of country X done Y". Because most people aren't in a hurry to die.
ManageThoseFootballs@reddit
I think anyone in that situation with a heart would try to do whatever they could even if deep down they knew it was futile.
SpacialReflux@reddit
Genuine question - if a plane crashed in my yard, like this situation, is water helping put out the fire or making it worse? Kitchen grease fires see water make it worse. Is the fuel/grease/oil in a plane going to act similar to a grease/fat fire in the kitchen?
DisregardLogan@reddit
It’s not gonna make it worse, but in most cases, it probably won’t do too much.
The best thing you can really do it block it off/control it as best as you can before professionals arrive.
no-but-wtf@reddit
Agreed. I don’t know shit about planes, but I know plenty about firefighting. Just keeping the grass and other fuels around the fire wet is important to stop the spread, even if you can’t put out what’s already burning.
The plane is already gone. But the houses and the grass don’t have to be. That’s what he’s doing.
J_C_Davis45@reddit
Wonder if they had just left Sun n Fun.
DullMind2023@reddit
Why all the downvotes? The plane had just departed from Tampa Arrow Park, right next to I-75. Alas, suburbia has grown nearby.
J_C_Davis45@reddit
Yeah, wow. Lotta hate for a simple question. I was at SnF all weekend and am always amazed at the outbound traffic Sunday morning. Was hoping it wasn’t someone from the show.
Derp800@reddit
When I was a kid I lived next to some crack head renters next door. One day these idiots burned their house down while my family was at school or work. Luckily, some random person saw the fire, ran and got our yard hose, and sprayed down our house on the neighbor's side. He drenched our walls and our roof to make sure the fire didn't catch over to our house. He probably saved our house. We never found out who it even was.
So yeah, good on this guy.
lockerno177@reddit
is there a deadbody in that wreck?
CouchPotatoFamine@reddit
Yes?
Pro-editor-1105@reddit
So slap that nsfw label on
RobustManifesto@reddit
That’s ridiculous. You can’t see anything. Do you put NSFW on any pic of a fully clothed person because “there’s a dick in those pants”?
kylleo@reddit
You cant SEE the body, theres one in there its just not visible.
mitchmarner1693@reddit
Where the hell?
Last-Storage-5436@reddit
better than standing around filming so low IQ Reddit members can watch the video
Specialist_Reality96@reddit
Slowing the spread down with whatever you have available is a perfectly reasonable thing to do until the professionals arrive.
Redneck-ginger@reddit
Especially since that area of Florida is in a significant drought right now
s0ul_invictus@reddit
man prob has 10 extinguishers in his garage but he's so proud of his hose handling skills he had to try it. look at the yard of the year watering stance right there, perfect support grip at a 45 deg angle, oh yea, this man is absolutely convinced he can put out a volcanic eruption with that damn hose.
