Audience etiquette in 2026… is it declining?

I’ve had the exact same experience at the proms 🙄 maybe because they’re one of the most accessible ways to access classical music? Bizarre. Haven’t had it at the opera or ballet….. *yet*.

I’ve been in a shared box at the royal Albert hall for a classical music performance and had to shush the other couple there. It’s top to bottom bad behaviour!

My mum has my location, as does my brother, best friend, and husband. Most of my friends do too. In fact when thinking about it none of my male friends have anyone outside of their spouse, but basically all of my female friends do!! Using it for control is **not** okay though. We share it for safety/convenience/light entertainment 😂

You literally said you want triage nurses. And yeah DUH more money should be spent on the NHS. But you think nurses on the phone is the first priority? You and I agree; in a hypothetical world with endless NHS money and endless trained nurses then triage nurses are perfect! But we’re in the real world where it’s unfunding and understaffed, so I accept the less than ideal situation for what it is.

Posted by ParentheticalsAside@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 248 comments

lizziexo@reddit

They ARE trained for triage though. And to say healthcare *outcomes* are decided by them isn’t accurate at all, they’re helping to direct patients. And as you say you can refuse to tell them anyway. So what does it matter? I called recently because I thought I needed a doctor to refer me to physio, when the receptionist asked the issue she told me not only could I self refer; she could book me in for a same day physio appointment! Perfect! If she hadn’t asked and I hadn’t shared I could have been waiting two weeks for an appointment with a GP that I didn’t need. In an ideal world, sure, I want nurses doing triage. But I’d rather spend all the extra money you’d have to pay thousands of nurses that we don’t have to cover the whole of the UK and put that towards more actual GPs. You can’t have it all. What’s your real world solution? Millions and millions of pounds spent on thousands of nurses who could be used somewhere much more useful than a phone answering service?

I’m the same. Does anyone remember what the people looked like the last time they were in the doctors waiting room? Or the name of any of these people they overheard? Probably not. It’s just passing natter that no one recalls after 3 minutes. Obviously there will always be the occasional weirdo who will do something odd like write it down or record things they overhear but I doubt that’s a common issue.

lizziexo@reddit

Yup. OP can report them to the police, or to the DVLA, but there’s nothing either of those will do about it. Maybe the DVLA will send them a letter to ask about medical issues. It absolutely sucks. The boomers are getting older and older but just won’t give up their licences. Trying to join motorways behind someone doing 35mph happens to me SO much. It’s elderly people who are scared or just oblivious to the danger they’re causing.

Posted by PaddedValls@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 1626 comments

lizziexo@reddit

Oh for sure!! I didn’t feel going in to too much detail was necessary but it would be things like paying off their mortgage, setting up trusts, paying for their kids unis, etc. I would NOT be dropping a million in to anyone’s hands! More like that’s how much I would assign but then actually deliver that money in much more controlled ways.

Yeah my best friends are getting at least their houses paid off and amazing trips with us. They have kids, they work hard, they’re incredible people who have been incredible support systems. No mortgage can substantially change people lives! My family though are getting at least 1mill each. I love them more than anything. And my husband can decide what to give his family but I’d expect he’d give a lot too. I *know* these people would all do this for me too. Buuuut I might tell them I got 50mill and not 100 😂

I’m not sure how that relates to now though? Ambition may be seems as vulgar but success isn’t. Better be seen to be working and financially successful than at leisure and living in a terraced house with a mortgage. Generally they still value a high education for their children too.

My husband also didn’t have a job until he graduated university, but we have a great house, nice cars, financially doing very well, and he has an incredible work ethic (which along with no distractions allowed him to get a first and a great graduate role). His parents also bought him his first car! OP assuming the parents are doing a disservice to their child is coming off as a bit salty, like you said as long as they’re grounded and not entitled then who wouldn’t want to set their kids up for an easier life.

Posted by Upstairs-Ad-6952@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 1674 comments

Your first sentence is so true. I think we’re used to American media where they seem to have the space to have more defined high/low areas (ignoring the really high density cities). We don’t have the space for that so the fancy expensive homes are normally patches of them in a town or city that is very mixed. I can’t really think of many towns that are actually *posh* because of that.

I’ve never heard of a proposal in my friend group which wasn’t discussed before hand (not the specifics, just that the couple is ready for that), and all of them went ring shopping together. No woman I know waited around clueless, they were actively involved in making that decision in their relationship before the symbolism of the proposal.

How much did you spend on an engagement ring?

Posted by Brilliant_Lawyer_946@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 370 comments

lizziexo@reddit

Exactly!! The *engagement* shouldn’t be a surprise, but the *proposal* can be! My husband and I had conversations about what kind of proposal and ring I’d like way before it happened, I went to the high street shops trying them on and being sized so I knew exactly what I wanted but he took that info away and had a ring custom made independently, and then he planned everything about the proposal; where, when, how! He knew I’d say yes, he knew I’d love the ring, he knew I’d still be surprise by what he planned. To me that’s how proposals should be. When you hear the nightmare situations where the woman says no I always wonder why they didn’t even have a hypothetical conversation about marriage before the man proposes. But also I think mine was 5k. Not too expensive it felt wasteful (to us) but still expensive enough it feels a little special to me.
