My mum complains she never has time to do anything. She watches TV every night from 5pm-10pm. I mean, she's 70 so fair enough but dont complain you dont have time when you spend 5 hours a day watching murder dramas.

What can I do with my day/weekend as a single person who’s feeling a little lonely?

I have kids and I'm always down for a pal to come round on a Saturday night for a few drinks! I dont get the chance to go out really so its nice when my friends take the time to see if I'm free / ask to pop round. So I say text them! Worse they can do is say they are not up for it!

Tradesmen of the UK, why do you book in jobs that you don't turn up for?

Posted by hyper-casual@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 182 comments

koalateacow@reddit

I'd also like to add, jobs can evolve and delays happen and it can make scheduling difficult. We try to add in buffer zones between jobs to mitigate for this but it's not perfect, especially if you get more than one hiccup (e.g. additional work is required, materials not available immediately, labourer off sick). It has a cascade effect and will impact 2 / 3 / 4 jobs down the line. Everyone likes to slag trades, but just watch 1 episode of grand designs and you can see how quickly things can get mismanaged by those who think they have the skills to project manage.

Similar happened when I had my second. The midwife on my ward came to check on me in tears apologising for not coming sooner. I had heard someone just having a go at her. It broke my heart how understaffed they were and how hard she was working. I had my first kid at the tail end of covid and they were better resourced then. The change was quite stark and really sad tbh.

Do you think there’s a problem with work ethic amongst tradesmen in the UK?

Posted by existingeverywhere@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 710 comments

koalateacow@reddit

"Is it ok to wait till next week to pay you when I get paid?" is something we hear a lot! For every prompt payment we receive, there's a late payment. I spent last year chasing a customer for 2 months for a 3k bill. We are a small, family run business. Late payments have a huge knock-on effect for us. And it's often the same customers who nip at you to finish the job on time who are the ones that delay paying!

Why aren’t universities insanely profitable?

Posted by wayanonforthis@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 281 comments

koalateacow@reddit

I used to work at a university and needed specialised software for a project I was working on... it took over 12 months to get approval before I could even fill out the form to go out to tender. By that point, the software company I wanted, lost the bid and I was left with something that wasn't entirely fit for purpose. Honestly, the entire process is archaic, all in the name of "transparency".

Agree... also a lot of people are just looking to save some money but could definitely afford new. My friend who earns considerably more than me, for example, is always getting her LO's stuff on marketplace. It's totally valid and it's environmental etc but I would rather give stuff away to people who can't afford another option.
