Left a job where I was undervalued, navigated three competing offers, now my manager is making my exit difficult. How do I make the right call?

Posted by thenetsecguy24@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 199 comments

Clean break. Less money than your new offer and more work expected? You'll basically be at the highest pay at your old job. In two years, which company has better chances of giving you a raise? Go with that company.

Take the new job. If you're so key at your current employer, your old place *might* take you back if you find out this Manufacture IT job is not what you want. It's always better to find another job while already employed. If you stick with your old job, get burnt out and quit, you will be more desperate to accept any job when you're unemployed.

CTO banned the use of remote access tool

*"However, the IT team from the old group won't allow us to add any new machines to this access tool during the migration."* Sounds like he's giving you less work...you aren't going to be able to support the new PCs. you've already voiced your concern. It's no longer your fault. You may not be in the CTO's future organization chart. Put your head down, update your resume/CV and apply to jobs.

Sysadmin wants every Windows server to be a fileserver for redundancy?

Posted by iingot@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 265 comments

danieIsreddit@reddit

SharePoint 365 is not a file server. At my last company we migrated our file server into SharePoint 365. It was a hot mess. You run into issues if there's a large folder structure or long file name. Don't migrate file servers to SharePoint 365.

danieIsreddit@reddit

Also, you wouldn't need just one big NAS, you would need two for redundancy. Maybe there's a cost factor involved. But I still agree with what you're thinking.

I am in a similar position as you. Just wait until he retires and implement it your way. There are multiple ways of doing it, and a single big NAS would be easier to manage to me, but there's probably some back story. I am waiting for my manager to retire so I can start implementing my own changes. There's no value in fighting back now if you just need to wait a year.

I totally agree. You were brought on as a Junior Sysadmin. It's your management's responsibility to make sure the infrastructure is supported. If you can't do or figure out something it's okay. You have been put in an uncomfortable situation. This is a great chance to learn, as well as see what you want to specialize or learn more about within IT. Take this as an opportunity. There will be mistakes and issues, but your management is the one that needs to be worried about their job, not you.

If I was hiring someone on my team, I would find someone willing to do basic tasks. You're right, for many companies, you are only allowed to do specific tasks for your title. I would prefer to have someone that can cover if a team member is on vacation or not around that day.

Abnormal Cloud Email Security, but it's a lot more expensive than CheckPoint. Similar protection with more features. My last place had Avanan (now CheckPoint), and my current employer uses Abnormal. I think you have to spend at least $25k/year to be eligible to be an Abnormal customer.

I've been through this before, my advice is to only be proactive in things that interest you. You trying to plug all the holes of a sinking ship, but that will just make your management that they can stay afloat a little longer. Each month they do not hire someone to help you, they are potentially saving thousands of dollars. Change (department headcount) will only happen when things fail, or deadlines aren't met. You can either keep doing what you did in the past, and let management solve the issue (that's their job), or you can take this opportunity to dip your toes into other parts of IT (firewalls, networking, server administration, cybersecurity, etc). I hope that helps. It's always okay to tell your management that you can't figure it out. They put you in this mess.

Staying as a contractor for previous employer? How do I do this properly.

Posted by issa_username00@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 34 comments

danieIsreddit@reddit

My last company laid me off with one month notice and then kept me on as a contractor. We agreed at double my hourly rate (because I need to pay for my own medical and retirement account. They kept me on for 2 months. Each invoice I sent them, I kept half in a high interest online checking account (Wealthfront was at 4% at the time) and the other half went into my regular checking account. I just paid my taxes, and what was in my online checking account was more than enough to cover what I owed in Federal + State taxes. Hope that helps. Congrats on the new job!

How hard should I push for a promotion at a job I really like?

Posted by BemusedBengal@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 19 comments

danieIsreddit@reddit

When negotiating salary, I look at the job market to see what I should be getting paid. I ask for a little above what the market is at right now (due to the company crumbling without you) knowing that my employer will send me a counter offer. If the counter offer is too low, but above my current pay, I accept the offer, and then I start job hunting. If they accept my offer, then I will accept and work my butt off for the next year, and then ask them again. At the end of the day, the only way to get the salary increase you want (something way over 3% of what you're currently making) is to ask. I think the title change is the least of your worries. You don't want to be a senior so soon that you have no where to move up afterwards. Keep your existing title, get more money.

2-man IT team → solo admin for 300 users, no raise. Stick it out or leave?

Posted by Ilovemybf_3990@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 568 comments

danieIsreddit@reddit

I've been in a similar situation before. I asked my new manager (CFO) for a raise, and we compromised on the salary increase amount. I was told we are acquiring a company in a few months, and I would be the head of IT. I took 3-days off, and when I got back, I found out that they chose the other company's IT guy (similar level to me) as the IT manager. It was very frustrating. From what I can tell from your story, is that the company doesn't value you enough. I would not expect anything, ask for the raise, and even if you get the raise, update your resume and start looking around. It may take you a year to find another gig, but at least you're putting yourself out there. Ultimately the IT manager saw how much of a shitshow it was and went to a competing company. The company I worked for got a new CEO and laid me off a year later after I was with the company for eleven years. Loyalty means nothing. Put yourself out there and get what you should be getting paid.

Was promised a promotion... again

danieIsreddit@reddit

You are cooked. If they don't have the budget to promote you, and you've been doing the extra work at the same pay as before, it will be harder to explain to them why you should get the salary bump. The worst that can happen for the business is that job duty gets neglected, something breaks, and then they hire a junior and tell you to train the junior admin what you used to do for free.

During my last office move, I had the users put labels with their name on all of their electronics. We also defined a lost and found area for electronics that didn't have a label. It worked out pretty well. Lost and found took about one month to clear.

Fresh cybersecurity graduate offered soo underpaid solo IT role to build full infrastructure from scratch — good experience or bad move?

Posted by Signal_Crow_9675@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 37 comments

danieIsreddit@reddit

If you take this job, since the role is underpaid, don't overwork yourself. Do not overwork yourself. You should only do this if you have an IT mentor or know at least two or more people with experience doing this. You should also find out what your budget is, because it sounds like they won't have much of a budget which will make things complicated for you.

If your office internet goes down, an on-premise VOIP solution will not allow you to receive calls from the outside world. Same with if the power goes down in the office. If VOIP is hosted in the cloud, if the office is down (power or internet) your mobile phones can still receive company phone calls.

I used to wait every two years, but u/supervernacular is spot on, pay increases annually. This is a business. They will treat you like an expense. Nothing will stop them from being savage to you. No harm writing down the accomplishments you've achieved in the year, and then asking for pay increases. Good luck!

My last place used Checkpoint (formerly Avanan), and my current place uses Abnormal. Abnormal is great, but I think it's the most expensive. Both Avanan and Checkpoint's email security solutions & POCs take less than 15 minutes to deploy if you're using Office 365 (hybrid/full cloud).
