People who have moved around a lot in the UK, where's the best place you've lived and why?

Bristol is cool, great walks around, but the city centre isn’t all that for me. Everything is sooo far away from eachother, it’s quite a trek to get to parts of town. Plus it’s so expensive for what you get- dirty, cramped housing. The whole of Bristol just feels like it needs a good shower. But then, I lived nearby Bristol where I grew up and my home town was basically Bath, so maybe I’m slightly biased.

I travel to Glasgow for work a lot and my god, the city has a good feeling to it, and it weirdly feels like I’m “going home” when I go there. Lovely friendly people, good buzz, near to rugged landscapes… just stunning. Edinburgh is nice too, but there’s something real/ gritty about Glasgow, like it’s the real Scotland city, if that makes sense.

When you ask for a pan au chocolate, how do you pronounce it?

Sometimes local French people call them “shock-oh-tee-air” Source: friend lived in Bordeaux for a year and she’d always order one by saying; “Je prends un chocotier”

Apparently we’re all vitamin D deficient. What are most people doing about it and how effective are they finding it?

Posted by Spicymargx@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 316 comments

craftaleislife@reddit

Not a scam. I had blood tests to confirm and vitamin D also helps your body to absorb calcium for better bone health (as someone who’s susceptible to tibial stress fractures from regular sport) It absolutely works.

Would you be happy with a below inflation pay rise ?

craftaleislife@reddit

But it’s true. People get what are essentially pay cuts and it’s met with “well at least you have it better than others” It’s not helpful and that mentality allows businesses to take the piss

craftaleislife@reddit

This whole “not great but you have it better than others, so think about it in perspective” mindset needs to stop. Or we get nowhere. OP is completely valid is showing frustration at getting a pay cut. Millions of workers are being squeezed and people need to join unions, collectively push for better pay etc.

How do you deal with scrotey neighbours who sleep during the day and (try to) party at night?

Posted by RonnieThePurple@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 186 comments

craftaleislife@reddit

You have to make it more annoying to deal with you than the issue itself. Pester the council weekly, call them once a fortnight etc. Get other neighbours who are disturbed to do the same. Seems the only way to get action these days

I’d imagine: 1. Par boil for 15 mins 2. Roast with garlic bulbs, rosemary for 1-1.25hrs in duck or goose fat 3. After 1 hour roasting, I get a masher and gently squish the pots down to get more surface area for the fat - makes them really crispy. Always come out looking like OPs, can find the recipe from Jamie Oliver’s Xmas book

Because they don’t get proper ramifications for their actions as younger kids. Soft parenting is the new thing, kids aren’t shouted at by teachers or parents anymore for messing about. Parents don’t properly tell off their children. Kids get away with a lot, and increase the antics because they “get away with it” and don’t see real punishment. To be clear, I’m not talking about slapping your child. When I was in primary/ secondary school, the one disruptive kid in class would be shunned, not celebrated by other kids. Teachers would actually raise their voice and maybe throw in a swear word when telling them off for fucking about in class. They’d embarrass them. Parents would actually firmly tell their kid to stop running about in supermarkets or pubs, or tell them they “wouldn’t get to do “x” , or leave, if they carried on” and stand by their word.

Yeah so it’s most likely around the £1-2k mark for the unit and fitting but it’s cheaper than ripping up the floor, you’re right! Luckily we have the external wall to mount it on, so will spend my week researching a/c units now!

What’s a fact that almost nobody believes but is completely true?

craftaleislife@reddit

I also agree- I would condemn someone for holding that opinion/ belief based on someone else’s protected characteristic. But, at the same time, they are entitled to that opinion… maybe their religion preaches it, maybe it’s simply their horrid, twisted belief. We can disagree with their opinion and, as long as they’re not directly discriminating against, or treating them differently, due to being gay (for example in the work place), they are allowed to have that opinion- as long as they don’t act on it.

It’s ok to have your own opinion, it’s not ok to have your own facts, as Obama said. If you want everyone to hold the same opinion as you (“incorrect opinions”), that’s not democracy, it’s pretty dystopic.
