What is the nicest part of the UK?

Posted by Desperate-Drawer-572@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 361 comments

If you had to tell someone from overseas what the nicest part of UK, what would you say? Cotswolds? Lake district? Peak district? Yorkshire dales?

Careful, this his how it begins. I came on a dive trip years back, then a few more dive trips, and now I live here. And it’s wonderful.

My daughter worked there last summer so we went to visit. She loved it but the work was seasonal, so she had to come back. I'd love to but there's no work for me there, and it's too far from my mother, who will need more support in the next 10 years or so. It was absolutely magical but sadly just not practical for me. I'm glad you're living the dream!

Eh, got multiple parks, multiple pretty areas with nice architecture, little hills in it, bigger hills in the distance, literally attached to crammond, two castles the superior of which is basically in a council estate. Like sure there are some parts which are standard uninspiring suburb or slightly grim estate (sorry Moredun, at least you have that really great bakery as a small compensation), but it's not actually possible to be a city without that being true - no city in the world is stunning from edge to edge, that's the kind of thing on villages or exceptionally small towns could achieve.

A place that is hugely under-rated, but really deserves to be better known, is the Malvern Hills and their hinterland. Lovely English towns and villages nestling in the lee of some beautiful hill walking territory. It's right in the heart of the shire, classic English countryside that has barely changed in centuries.

Totally agree, people genuinely suggesting Bath or Norfolk when Skye, the Fisherfield wilderness & Knoydart exist for a lot of people in the south of England, the north of Scotland is basically Narnia. Cos if you're in e.g. Kent/Essex, it's effectively a full days' travel to get anywhere north west of Perth, so it gets treated like a foreign country that people will go on holiday to once in their lifetime

I live in Swindon and there are actually some lovely parts to it, some beautiful villages around it, too. The problem is that about 90% of people either come into the centre of town or go from the M4 to a trading estate. Which look like shit. Nearly everyone that isn't living here sees the absolute worst parts of it. Photo attached is Wood Street, which if you didn't know better, you'd think was in some bougie Cotswold town. https://preview.redd.it/0hdfy2z8syrg1.png?width=2500&format=png&auto=webp&s=bdcad59393efad459791a53510c58dd12ca05c5b

South Wales is a cheat code. I’m surrounded by insanely beautiful countryside, beaches and mountains within a short drive. A few train stops and into the city. And can get to Bristol in 1hr, London in 2. I think it’s only the M4 choke point that’s suppressed prices. Wouldn’t live anywhere else.

Haha it’s not that bad but also depends where and when you’re going - summer in St Ives or Newquay, yeah no chance. But a quiet February weekend near Lands End, for example… much more manageable. That said, you’ve got the Dales on your doorstep, so you’re equally winning :)

View on Reddit #81870128

trysca@reddit

For seafood Newlyn is the best Mackerel Sky for example they send the best fish up to London and the rest of Cornwall but also Looe. I would suggest Mevagissey or Fowey on the south coast. St ives is lovely off season but St Agnes and the Tintagel area are lovely - I actually quite like Padstow despite the Rick Stein hate.

Can’t comment too much on seafood as not my specific cuisine of choice but I’m western Cornwall, so anywhere from Lands End up to St Ives (so Sennen, St Just, Zennor etc) have lovely coastlines - highly recommend Nanjizal or Lantic Bay (near Fowey). Equally on the other side there’s Mousehole which is a wicked little town and Portcurno with a lovely ‘hidden’ beach and the outdoor Minack theatre. Falmouth is extremely popular and expensive comparatively but nice. St Austell probably a more appropriate town for ‘not too touristy’ v the other big hitters like Newquay.

The Scottish Highlands are very beautiful but I don't like the small towns. All the young people moved away so they're pretty much empty and there's nothing to do unless you drive like 50 miles. Then again, Inverness is the self-styled capital of the Highlands and it's lovely.

Spent so many family holidays from a little kid to adulthood in North Wales. Absolutely beautiful. Stunning and magical. Can't imagine a more wonderful place. I can never go back now as it would be too heartbreaking without my parents and grandparents who have all passed away. Every place would remind me of thier loss. But it's the most amazing place. You never knew what would be around the next corner. Literally has everything. Mountains, lakes, rivers, beaches, castles, cute villages. For me it's the most beautiful place I can think of.

View on Reddit #81872291

coffeewalnut08@reddit

I love both, but I feel the Lake District is more intimate because everything is more bunched together. So you can see a lot of colours, environments and natural features in a short distance there. Wales feels more spaced out, so feels less intimate to me…. Just my opinion. Both are beautiful though, I adored my times in Wales :)
View on Reddit #81871868

Well yeah a lot of the time it comes down to just which is easier for you to reach. Living in Newcastle, if I have a full day free for a countryside outing, 9/10 times I’ll go to the lakes because it’s a 2 hours very scenic drive away. Wales it obviously amazing too, as are the Scottish highlands and other areas. But ultimately the best place to go is just what is relatively easy to reach from where you are, at the start anyway.

Slough'als nightlife is incredible; it's got two nightclubs. It's got Chasers and New York, New York. They call it the nightclub that never sleeps. That closes 1am. There was a themed nightclub called Henry the Eights. This was incredible. It had the Anne Bol-inn, this is true, as you went into the loo, there was a sign that said "mind your head" (nice!), and underneath someone had written 'and don't get your Hampton Court!' It's not there any more. But not a day goes by that I don't think about it.
View on Reddit #81869351

Krizzlin@reddit

I was thinking about this the other day and it genuinely only just occurred to me that the Hampton part is a legitimate rhyming slang term. I had always thought this was simply a throwaway line like you can make anything sound like penis in the right context and Hampton Court was just relevant because Henry VIII but no, it's layered. Hampton is short for Hampton Wick in rhyming slang. Hampton Court is obviously the palace of Henry VIII. It's actually pretty hard to imagine the residents of early 00s Slough were able to put this little pun together whilst off their tits on vodka red bull. Just another example of the laughs we have around here. So...

From hot countries - generally very green areas (the lake district being the obvious place), somewhere landlocked - beaches (Gower peninsula). somewehere flat and hot - north wales (small mountains, greenery, rain), somewhere with a lot of natural scenery (yanks, Aussies) - old towns and small villages. I grew up there so I'm biased but the answer is the Hebrides, South Uist specifically. >The Good One made the Hebrides on the eighth day and this was the way of it. The world was finished and the Good One was mighty tired and took a rest and, while He was resting, He thought “I have shown my earth-children the power of my mind, in rock and mountain and tree and wind and flower. And I have shown them the likeness of my mind, for I have made theirs like my own. And I have shown them the love of my mind, for I have made them happy. But halt,” says the Good One to Himself, “I have not shown them the beauty of my mind.” So the next day, and that was the eighth day, He takes up a handful of jewels and opens a window in the sky and throws them down into the sea. And those jewels are the Hebrides.

Thats a hard one. Ive lived all over and spent lots of time elsewhere too. Grew up on the edge of the Peak District. Holidayed in Cornwall and the Lake District. Lived on the South Downs, Kent, Dumfries and now in Northern Ireland and the coast is just stunning.... https://preview.redd.it/gsgua636evrg1.jpeg?width=1226&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9cc25c83397d30de301bf80e32046c2de64582b2

I grew up around Yat Rock. It's lovely, and perhaps I'm just overly familiar with the place, but I think the Lake District and parts of Cornwall / Devon are nicer. I'd probably prefer the Highlands too, though I've not yet visited.

Hes-behind-you@reddit

I suppose it's a small area and maybe more of a postcard type nice. There's nice countryside around it.

Cotswolds are notoriously racist so it wont be nice from someone from overseas, someone of colour anyway. London would probably be the best answer.

The north east of England underrated. Amazingly friendly people. Long sandy beaches. A forest. Numerous castles. Endless lovely villages. Quiet. Each to their own though.

There's a reason that Kent is called the Garden of England. Probably because of the compost heap tucked away behind the shed in the Isle of Sheppey. The nicest part is the furthest from that compost heap - Cornwall.

I would say the Peak District (because I’m from near there) but definitely I would accept the Lake District, Cornwall, Cotswolds … it’s super hard to answer this Q. I’d say Peak District if pushed, because it’s not just beauty it’s also people. And they are so friendly.
