What's the best American sport to watch?

I remember sitting in a frozen stadium, watching a college football game in November. The sequence went like this: 3rd and medium. Time out called. Commercial break Run off-tackle, fail to pick up first down. Punt, fair catch called. Full media timeout This is when I realized that football was designed for the TV audience, not the people in the stands who could no longer feel their fingers and toes.

Why does the USA have only 2 political parties?

Posted by neonurban@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 37 comments

bladel@reddit

This is one of the better explanations I’ve heard recently. Some countries have a lot of parties, but always form majority & minority coalitions after elections. In the US, our “coalitions” are pre-formed and persistent. Even if the factions comprising them change.

I’m from the QC originally and i always make a point of having Quad City pizza when I’m back. I love the spicy sausage and the cheese. Growing up as a kid, this was just what we knew as “pizza” and my cousins and I would always fight for the edges.

This was in the late 90s, on a flight from PHX to SFO. SFO was fogged in, so we circled for a while (back when this was more common). I was listening to ATC on channel 9, and heard our pilot say we’d hit our fuel limit and needed to land or emergency divert to OAK. ATC sent us to OAK, where we landed to a closed terminal. They had to wake up some poor soul to come in and unlock the fuel services and refuel the plane. Took about 2 hours. Then, we had the wonderful experience of flying OAK-SFO in the middle of the night. I think the gear was up for about 10 minutes. To this day, I wonder why they didn’t just wake up a bus driver.

How common are clothes dryers in your part of the US?

Posted by renegadecoaster@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 1410 comments

bladel@reddit

Moved from Iowa to Arizona, and we’ve started line drying things more often. The dryer heats up the house (working against the AC), plus laundry dries quickly in 10% humidity. It does leave things like towels a bit scratchy, so sometimes we’ll get clothes 90% dry outdoors and then use the dryer just to soften them up.

How do americans keep their houses warm in winter ?

Posted by HUMANKIND0@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 1776 comments

bladel@reddit

The answer varies regionally. In the northeast, older homes usually have a boiler that burns heating oil to make steam, which is distributed throughout the house via radiators. In most of the country, natural gas is delivered to a furnace that blows hot air through the ventilation system (which is also used in the summertime by the air conditioner to cool the house). Natural gas can be delivered via piping to the house, or (in rural areas) is stored in the yard in a giant tank (propane). In warmer areas of the country, we use electric heat or (increasingly) heat pumps, just to help those chilly nights in winter. In some mild climates, the houses might not have any heat at all.

Can I buy a car as a tourist?

Posted by Proud-Koala687@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 253 comments

bladel@reddit

Agreed, I don’t see how registration would work in this situation. OP doesn’t have a permanent mailing address in the US, and sounds like they’ll be moving around so even a hotel or PO Box isn’t going to work. The DMV is going to issue a temporary plate or sticker, and then want to mail the permanent plate/sticker to…where? Long term rentals are going to be the best option.

What is a 401k?

Posted by 20dollarsinmapocket@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 421 comments

bladel@reddit

Folks are correctly highlighting the tax advantages of contributing to a 401(k), but not enough mentions of the employer match. It’s optional (but common) for your employer to match your contribution to your 401(k), up to a certain percentage. So if you have a 5% match and you contribute 5%, your employer will effectively double your contribution.
