What size bed do you have? How many people sleep in it?

What is the most common size of bed Americans use?
stonedngettinboned@reddit
i have a king. 2 adults but 2 dogs and 3 cats lol
AlternativeCraft8905@reddit
King. 2 adults. Occasionally 2 adults and a 5m old. Rare occasion 2 adults and a 5y old. Ultra rare 2 adults 5m old and 5y old
Before anyone comes for me, I sleep with the baby on my side and can’t sleep when she’s in the bed. I just watch her sleep as I lay in delirium until I can get her back in her bed
TN_fun_cpl@reddit
King. One most nights. 2 and a dog other nights.
Firm-Plantain8151@reddit
I have a queen for me and occasionally my dog. mostly it's me, my computer, my crafts, and possibly some snacks.
Organic_Eggplant_323@reddit
We have what I like to call an XL king. Basically we had a split king (2 twin XLs pushed together) and when we upgraded our mattresses we decided to keep one of the old ones so now we have 3 twin XL mattresses pushed together. 2 adults and 1200 pillows sleeping in this bed along with the occasional young grandchild (who replaces most of the pillows) on a sleepover.
Alarming-Substance82@reddit
Queen bed, 1 adult. Sometimes my daughter makes a guest appearance
IrreverentSweetie@reddit
Queen, 1 adult
karebearofowls@reddit
King. Two adults.
Pinikanut@reddit
This was me and my husband but it started getting tight when we got our third dog. So, we bought a second king and stuck it next to the first.
Now it's two kings next to eachother with 2 adults and 3 (large) dogs. I still get kicked all night.
karebearofowls@reddit
I spent years sleeping on a full size (that I was to tall for.) with my feet hanging off the end. I got my first house and upgraded to a king. Now I wake up most mornings with my feet hanging off the bed again. Since I keep moving myself to the end of the bed, in my sleep.
mfigroid@reddit
Upgrade to an Alaskan King.
iMom561@reddit
This is the answer. Sheets and blankets would be a bitch to find.
Bright_Ices@reddit
I’m 5’3”, sleep in a king size bed, and wake up with my feet hanging off the bottom.
iMom561@reddit
Me too. I sleep better that way. Lol
Fyrestar333@reddit
Doing that helped my plantar fasciatis(sp?) took some getting used too.
procrastinarian@reddit
6'4", sleep in a king, often have my feet off the edge even though i can fit perfectly fine. I think it is just a thing after many years.
BirdsEverywhere-777@reddit
I feel your pain.
ginamegi@reddit
That’s a big bedroom sheesh
Pinikanut@reddit
Well....my bedroom isn't that big, it is just 85% bed at this point. I have to roll across it to get up every morning because there's no room to walk around. Worth it.
fearain@reddit
This is legitimately my wife’s dream
AGirlNamedRoni@reddit
Mine too!
Still_Want_Mo@reddit
Nah that’s a huge bedroom. Congrats!
gremlinguy@reddit
If you can fit 2 kings side by side, you have a bigger bedroom than I've ever had in my life, and I had the entire finished part of the basement for a while as a teenager. But not a single spot would have allowed two kings touching each other
Fluffy-kitten28@reddit
That sounds sooo cozy and awesome.
SupKilly@reddit
Sorry, but the simple fact that you can place two king beds next to each other...
Your bedroom is big.
InspectorMoney1306@reddit
Mine must be huge cause I can do that with quite a lot of room to spare. The biggest bedroom in my house has a king size bed and a sectional sofa.
TiberianSunset@reddit
That’s sofa king big
PirateSteve85@reddit
I see what you did there
PineappleFit317@reddit
That’s not a bedroom you have, it’s a roombed.
TheBigMotherFook@reddit
I like the way you think
oneislandgirl@reddit
That's a pain if you have to get up at night to go to the bathroom.
Original_Staff_4961@reddit
lol this person is lying. It’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard.
“My bedroom isn’t that big” if you can fit two king sized beds in it, your bedroom is fucking massive
27eelsinatrenchcoat@reddit
A 14''x14' room would fit side by side kings. Not small but not what I'd call fucking massive, particularly for a master bedroom.
Original_Staff_4961@reddit
Sure, if you literally don’t have a single dresser, bedside table, or any space to walk.
Anyone who can afford a room that can fit two kings, and can afford the absolutely ludicrous expense of buying an additional king size bed due to pets, is not going to push to beds together like they’re back in the trailer park. Buy a California king
27eelsinatrenchcoat@reddit
I mean that's exactly what they said they did, pushed it together and had no room left.
Also I don't know where you live but around here a large bedroom doesn't mean an expensive house. We could fit two kings next to each other and wearing a hundred-year-old bungalow in a cheaper part of town. It's not that unusual.
And a California king is actually less wide than a regular king, it's just a tad longer.
Original_Staff_4961@reddit
A new king sized bed and mattress can be purchased for under 1k????
Sure, if the mattress is literally filled with straw. wtf you on?
TychaBrahe@reddit
I just bought a queen size frame and mattress off Amazon for under $400.
27eelsinatrenchcoat@reddit
Yeah, easily. When was the last time you bought a mattress? They've come down massively in price over the years. Mostly because the foams used on spring less models has become a mass produced commodity.
The very first mattress I see when searching the Costco app is a memory foam king sized mattress for $579. You can get them even cheaper on Amazon, though I'd prefer a more traditional retailer in case I don't like it. The king bed I slept on last night was under $300 and a quick Amazon search shows other options currently at that price.
Original_Staff_4961@reddit
Yeah, you only need the mattress for sure. Bed frames and box springs.
Go buy a $300 king size mattress. It probably is literally straw
Quinlynn@reddit
I just found a Zinus memory foam king matress on Amazon for under $500.
27eelsinatrenchcoat@reddit
I'm telling you, go check Amazon. A memory foam mattress and bed can be had for a total of less than $700. And you don't need a box spring. Honestly while I might spend a bit more most foam mattresses are pretty similar, and are certainly not straw. I'm speaking from actually looking at prices as well as personal experience I'm curious what you're speaking from.
Quinlynn@reddit
My bedroom could pretty easily fit two kings. Right now I have a king and a futon couch right next to it. It would be tight but still functional. My house was built in the 60s and we bought it in 2022 for 290k in Atlanta.
Lcdmt3@reddit
Our bedroom is 14x14 And we could do two kings side by side and still have room for a dresser on the other wall. And have a stand-up dresser. Nothing would block the bathroom door but it would block the walk-in closet door.
In our master bedroom is considered smaller in our neighborhood
Original_Staff_4961@reddit
Mainly because it’s an absolutely preposterous thing to do lmao
JustARandomBloke@reddit
I think I could fit two kings side by side.
You'd only have about 2 feet free on 3 walls to walk around them though.
Rare_Independent_814@reddit
I thought about doing this cause my kids crowd be so hard
SassyGirl0202@reddit
My grandparents had 2 kings in there room, one for each of them lol.
oneislandgirl@reddit
My parents each had a king bed but in separate rooms because my dad snored like a freight train.
Euphoric_Ease4554@reddit
This is the way.
PhilaRambo@reddit
Having separate bedrooms & bathrooms is the best
RoseHawkechik@reddit
Yeah, we have queens in separate rooms because we both snore and he, to quote my late sister referring to her own husband, "flops around like a landed trout."
Bright_Ices@reddit
Like most TV couples before the mid '70s.
sfdsquid@reddit
Except they all had twin beds.
Bright_Ices@reddit
True
Nightcalm@reddit
No dogs in the bed, always been our rule, they have very nice beds at the foot of ours.
PJ_lyrics@reddit
Lol we have a king and a queen right next to each other because of 3 dogs. And yes they still want to lay right where we're supposed to be sleeping.
stevemm70@reddit
MEGA-BED!
Individual-Fox5795@reddit
Sounds like a nightmare to change sheets weekly and make bed daily.
Pinikanut@reddit
I don't make my bed daily but changing the sheets every week is a total nightmare, I'll admit.
StormFallen9@reddit
Currently have a queen with my wife, a medium size dog, and a small size dog. It's a little squished sometimes
ThimbleBluff@reddit
Your wife is a medium size dog?
StormFallen9@reddit
Oxford comma dilemma meets interjection dilemma
SandraMort@reddit
Sometimes you're going to be ssquished regardless of the layout. I was in bed with my husband, 2 kids and 2 dogs and got pushed to the edge all the time... even thick it was 2 kings pushed together! Everybody wants to cuddle with mama, even if it leaves 80% of the bed empty.
Neeneehill@reddit
Wow that is crazy. You bought a whole extra king size bed for your dogs? And you still let them sleep in the bed that you actually sleep in?
SandraMort@reddit
Back when i was married, very pregnant, had two kids and two German shepherds, we had two kings side by side. I did have a fourth child but not until after the first dog died and two of the kids moved out of the bed. And now I'm down to no dogs and the first three kids out of my bed in a queen, so my husband gets to sleep on the couch if my youngest wants to "steal his spot".
Euphoric_Ease4554@reddit
I would take one king and give the other bed to him and the dogs.
thankyoufriendx3@reddit
Queen. One adult, 3 dogs.
Sheliwaili@reddit
And it’s still too small for my husband! He also moves around A LOT, but I don’t. I couldn’t imagine that we slept on queens before
smwisdom@reddit
This. King, two adults plus sometimes our large (60lb/ 28kg) dog.
_handlemewithcare_@reddit

Livid-Improvement953@reddit
King bed and two queen blankets so we can each roll up like a burrito and be comfortable in whatever thickness of blanket suits us.
UnicornWig@reddit
Best method ever!!
captainstormy@reddit
That's what the wife and I do. When we first moved in together I kept walking up in the middle of the night freezing because she would death roll like a gator and wrap herself up in the covers burrito style.
FlyingSpacefrog@reddit
My wife and I have three blankets. The other night she kicked two of them onto the floor then stole mine. I was very offended.
captainstormy@reddit
Lol, clearly you had the good blanket.
HipYip@reddit
OMG! The separate blankets thing is a total game changer!!!!!!
Midwesternsasquatch@reddit
Yes, this exactly, I like a weighted blanket myself, and am a rather large man, got a 45 pound cooling weighted blanket. I love it, most of the rest of my family can't move the damn thing.

Sounds like you and yours could benefit from the Scandinavian Sleep Method.
Kestrel_Iolani@reddit
Same, except we have a queen bed and two twin comforters.
Accomplished_Fox5662@reddit
One top sheet no top sheet?
Kestrel_Iolani@reddit
No top sheet. The whole point of us making the switch was that wide is a thief in the night. We tried two twin top sheets when we first divided the comforters but it wasn't worth it.
Accomplished_Fox5662@reddit
That makes sense! I’m considering this setup, but feel like the top sheet protects me from having to wash my comforter as often. Do you have an easy to wash blanket / comforter?
Alternative_Set_5814@reddit
This is what we have too- queen with 2 twin duvets. We use a top sheet, which i know some people forgo. My husband is a blanket thief but tends to leave the top sheet alone, so it works.
yay4chardonnay@reddit
Same but add dog.
Livid-Improvement953@reddit
Always add a dog! Sadly our dog is too elderly to jump on the bed anymore and enjoys her nice cushy floor bed.
Zappagrrl02@reddit
Separate blankets all the way!!!
CrabbyCatLady41@reddit
My husband was so scandalized when I suggested we each have our own blanket. But I started having hot flashes and night sweats in my late 30s, and he tends to fight an invisible bear in his sleep. Separate blankets are the only way!
NoelleElizabeth68@reddit
This is the way!
Accomplished_Fox5662@reddit
Same top sheet?
Livid-Improvement953@reddit
No top sheet. I like the fuzziness of the blanket in the winter and it gets washed regularly. In the summer I have a 4 layer muslin blanket.
FoundationAny7601@reddit
Absolutely this! Not sure why it's not more popular.
Daneeeeeeen@reddit
Ditto
etchedchampion@reddit

Lonely_Sale9707@reddit
Yes but some of us prefer duvets.
hammerofspammer@reddit

Lonely_Sale9707@reddit
Sure, we good
lisasimpsonfan@reddit
This is the way. We have to have our own blankets because I need to wrap myself up in a cocoon and will steal blankets in my sleep to do so. We each have extra pillows because my husband is a pillow thief so it evens out.
EffieBoohoo@reddit
Queen bed with 2 queen duvet comforters because I am a blanket hog lol
hausomapi@reddit
Same. We can’t do a king mattress as my husband thinks I am too far away and a queen duvet on a queen bed leaves someone half covered. Queen bed with king duvet is the answer. Everyone is happy.
False_Grape1326@reddit
I don’t like to share air - King needed in case both turn into the center lol
GlitterberrySoup@reddit
I have tried to explain this to my partner but he doesn't get it. I don't even like to share air with myself. There must be an unobstructed path to my face so I can get the good air.
lunacyaboundsin804@reddit
My daughter (27 autistic) sleeps with only a face hole, the rest is a lump of blanket-with the occasional foot out for temp regulation.
I wonder if that's why - she doesn't like her own air. Interesting.
This is why I come to reddit, to understand everyone better. Thx!
bluesubok@reddit
I'm 42 and have slept this exact way since I was a baby. And I have had 3 Drs this year tell me that I'm probably on the ASD after chatting with me for a little bit.

Temporary-Win4307@reddit
It’s comforting to know that I’m not the only one with this issue. I thought I was a freak struggling to breathe warm humid rebreathed air.
BoopleBun@reddit
My husband sometimes sleeps with the blanket over his head like a god damn maniac. I have no idea how he does it, I could never.
Desertbell@reddit
My husband feels the same way, but we have a king anyway. I can always move closer, and I like my space when I'm sleeping.
Semirhage527@reddit
I always feel too far away when we are on vacation with a king too lol, a queen is perfect! We also use a king top sheet & quilt
Lcdmt3@reddit
I feel so squished when we go on a vacation and we get a room with two queens. I'm so used to being able to stretch. I move a lot in my sleep, my husband has been known to jerk when he falls asleep. In a queen I got hit in the face.
V_is4vulva@reddit
This is the answer!
existential-koala@reddit
Sounds like you and yours could benefit from the Scandinavian Sleep Method.

penpapercats@reddit
We do separate blankets. Even on our honeymoon, with a king bed, we somehow in the middle of the night separated the sheets so we each got a top sheet and fleece blanket. Unintentionally.
Stop_Already@reddit
This was a game changer for us. :) We always ended up with a cat between us and it would weigh down the blanket so one person couldn’t pull it toward them.
Background-Cod-7035@reddit
I’d say we should do that but I get hot flashes and toss off the blankets all the time—our favorite moments are when weather and my body temperature align so that we can cuddle while sleeping. Do all these people with kings or double kings or three dogs not cuddle ever?
ancientastronaut2@reddit
I hate when quilts and blankets are "full/queen". They usually end up being too small for a queen.
Aspen9999@reddit
King, we make the top of the bed with 2 twin sheets and separate blankets per side… because I’m the blanket thief.
natigin@reddit
I feel seen, we have a California king duvet and it’s solved a lot of problems haha

And because manufacturers lie about the size of duvets and blankets.

Also, our queen occasionally accomodates 3 or 4 people when our children sneak into it in the wee hours of the morning.

Lcdmt3@reddit
We did that too until we went to a king, and now I'm so mad that nothing is wide enough.
I really think I want to go to Scandinavian where we have different covers.
RhymenoserousRex@reddit

AdamN@reddit
King bed with two duvets is the way to go

PurpleAriadne@reddit
This except when I snore and go to the twin on the other room!
leilani238@reddit
We had a queen for over a decade and swapped to a king a couple of years ago. There are downsides I hadn't anticipated, like with flannel sheets, a set of sheets takes almost a whole load of laundry!

Buckets86@reddit
Queen. Two adults, a French bulldog with her head also on a pillow, and a golden retriever at the foot. It’s…cuddly. The layout of our room won’t really accommodate a king but we’re moving this summer to our new, bigger house. We won’t know what to do with all that space.

A standard king (76 x 80) has 6,080 total inches and a cal king (72 x 84) has 6,048 total inches.
The cal king is longer but narrower. The standard king is still slightly larger overall.
girlinthegoldenboots@reddit
Oh…then what is the really big one that is bigger than a king?
splatgoestheblobfish@reddit
My husband and I took our queen, turned it sideways, and put a twin XL at the end (or would that be considered next to it if it's sideways?) Voila! Texas king.
MarkNutt25@reddit
76 x 80 is a normal king. An Alaskan king is 108 x 108!
WoodwifeGreen@reddit
There are also Wyoming, Texas and Alaskan kings that are each bigger than the other.
Full_Satisfaction450@reddit
I learned this trying to book hotels in Ireland a couple years back. They’d say a king but I could tell in the photo it was not!
Frrv2112@reddit
Ireland isn’t the same as UK. I don’t give a single fuck but many do…be careful
MarkNutt25@reddit
But they do (generally) use the same bed sizes.
moien-yall-@reddit
Learned this the hard way when my husband gifted me a king size duvet cover from a UK company that we have to squish the duvet into and then it just barely covers the top of our mattress. Still use it, though, because it is extremely cute.
sparkles_7@reddit
Do you have a California King?
Regular King size is wider (76” x 80”), California King is longer (72” x 84”)
MaccyBoiLaren@reddit
Yeah, the US really doesn't know how big a king or queen should be. Haven't had one for a while.
AlienDelarge@reddit
A US king is just two twins hiding in a bed sheet.
MaccyBoiLaren@reddit
Not to be confused with the Alabama King.
Tennessee1977@reddit
Is there a size above king in the UK? (In the U.S. we have California King).
D__________________D@reddit
UK King size mattress is US Queen size, I learnt that one going the other way!
Even a Super King in the UK is going to be narrower than the US, unfortunately.
MoronLaoShi@reddit
All the beds are small. Like why y’all live like this?
Frrv2112@reddit
U talking California king??? That’s a different level
MoronLaoShi@reddit
My wife is British. The beds in her father’s and brother’s guest rooms were teeny tiny.
Frrv2112@reddit
Gotcha. They don’t even know what they’re missing while pretending it’s normal. US is land of excess and bed sizes have confirmed it for me
Cold_Captain696@reddit
It's just the names that are different. The UK king is about the same size as the US queen size. The UK then has a 'super king' size that's not far off the US king size.
Easily fixed if you just buy the bed by its measurements, rather than what it's called.
Frrv2112@reddit
So fair. I was being unnecessarily dramatic
False_Grape1326@reddit
Is it still a square versus rectangle like the queen?
One of the best parts of the US king bed is all four corners of the sheet work the same.
I am 5’2 with a split top king adjustable and my bed rotting has reached peak luxury whatever that might indicate 🫡🤷🏻♀️😜
SassyGirl0202@reddit
I know this just by vacationing there and asking for a king bed. Lol and their queen size is really a full size.
Footnotegirl1@reddit
American King Size (which we found out last year is different than what King Size means in the UK and Europe!) which is 76" X 80" (193 cm x 203 cm). 2 adults sleep in it.
gkpetrescue@reddit
King. 2-3 people. 2 dogs. 1-2 cats.
FloatingFreeMe@reddit
Wow, am I really so far off the curve because we have a full (aka double) for 2 people and a cat or 3? And we’re not skinny.
kellylikescats@reddit
Same, fiancée and I share a double. I think whenever we need a new mattress next we’ll upgrade to a queen but that’s far out. We were both poor students when we moved in together and it seemed silly to get a new one 🤷🏻♀️ we pretty frequently shared their twin when we started dating so it felt like an upgrade at the time lol
Alatariel99@reddit
Same exact story here!
DoltPish@reddit
Same! I've been begging to upgrade to a king because our cats are bed hogs.

Us too, minus the cats. We had a queen but the room is really too small, and we end up half on top of each other no matter how big the bed is anyway.
SandraMort@reddit
My plus sized impasse shared a full also. My husband and ijust couldn't imagine... until we ended up in one and it wasn't bad. I still prefer a king but we compromised and got a queen this time. My daughter can't squeeze in anymore, though, so will "steal daddy's spot" once or twice a week" and he sleeps on the couch.

Oomlotte99@reddit
That’s my reason as well. I’m not new to this I’m true to this.
jsmoo68@reddit
Same but add the body pillow, a cat, and a 25-pound dog.
ManiacalShen@reddit
Same. Old houses have small bedrooms...
CoderPro225@reddit
Exactly! My house was built in 1950. Small rooms.
ManiacalShen@reddit
Mine's not much newer! I had a queen bed originally, but the feng shui was a mess, and I couldn't use half the drawers (storage bed) because the bed was against a wall. If one does ever want another human to stay over, it's not great if they have to climb over you or even just crawl the width of the mattress to get into and out of the bed!
I have zero regrets about downsizing to full and rearranging everything
CoderPro225@reddit
My full size is a storage bed with drawers. LOVE the extra space as my house as precious few closets and cupboards. We have so much more junk now than people did in the past. 🤷♀️

That’s how we ended up with a king. Recently stayed in a hotel with a queen and it made me kind of miss how close we had to be.

I have an older friend (man in his 90s) who sites seperate bedrooms as one of the secrets to a long marriage. There is time for hankypanky when everyone is awake. 70 years is a long time to be waking up at 5am because your partner is an early bird who wants to see the sunrise.
Oee0@reddit
Separate rooms with your spouse/partner is honestly underrated!!!
samiwas1@reddit
My wife and I also have very different sleep schedules, but we share a bed. Luckily, we can both sleep through the other getting up.

same situation. 12 years.
she likes her peaceful morning time, and i thrive by staying up until 1:30am like a degenerate.
RegularAstronaut@reddit
Degenerates unite! I go to bed around the same time lmao. I mostly watch streams, play games, and craft (crochet usually). I call my time after he goes to bed my “witching hours.”
nordic-nomad@reddit
Yeah I’ve known a few couples where one works in construction where they have to get up super early and the other doesn’t and they’ll do something similar.
diredachshund@reddit
Yes, this is the way! Except I am the early bird and he is the night owl haha. I sleep in a twin, he has a queen we sometimes cosleep in when we want extra closeness. When I invited him to live with me it was with the caveat that we would have separate bedrooms 😂
getElephantById@reddit
Sleeping in separate bedrooms was not unusual historically, just recently. There's nothing wrong with it, and it makes a lot of sense.
isobane@reddit
My wife and I will be celebrating 14 years this year and we've always had separate beds. Her room has a King mine has a Full and we're both super comfy.
katlian@reddit
Same here except he has the king bed because both large dogs sleep in it too. He gets up at a ridiculous hour to take them running.
Becks128@reddit
I’m currently on my phone and my husband went to bed 3 hours ago lol maybe we need separate rooms!
imthe5thking@reddit
Girlfriend fell asleep close to an hour ago, but there’s NO WAY we could have separate rooms. She physically can’t fall asleep anymore if she’s not resting her head on my chest. Her words when she tries to fall asleep on her own are “Sir, you broke me. I’m no longer a strong independent woman!”
Becks128@reddit
Ha ha ha my husband can not sleep without me. I on the other hand AM a strong independent woman. Also I literally say that every day because I am ha ha ha it’s a running joke now.

Very similar to me! I’ve got a twin, wife has the queen. The queen used to be the only bed so we shared it. But I have a sleep disorder and we both have very different sleeping needs, so I’m usually in my twin now with the two cats. I’m short so the twin fits me fine.

I spent almost my entire life in a twin sized bed, including when I bought my house. I didn't realize how horrible it was. For contacts, I'm 6'2, 240ish pounds, with broad shoulders. My feet hung off the bed, and didn't touch the mattress until about 6 in or so above my ankle. Then I upgraded to a queen, and it was life-changing. My girl at the time was very small, 5'2ish 90ish pounds, and would she would sleep over had to lay on top of me, otherwise there was nowhere for her. When I got the queen mattress though, suddenly we actually had space. I remember the first night we slept on it, I actually woke up in the middle of the night thinking that she left because she wasn't physically on top of me lol

I am married, but we have separate bedrooms - he has a queen bed so we can cosleep in there when we want to, but I sleep the majority of nights in my little twin.
frisky_husky@reddit
Queen, and two adults. My partner is 6'3" (190 cm, if you're not from the Anglosphere) and a double/full (which in the US is the same length as him) means that he has to fold his knees up, which means I have no space. We had a full for several years, but neither of us slept particularly well in that bed. It seems like most adult couples sleep in queen beds these days, though as Americans have on average gotten larger in multiple dimensions, so have our beds. My bedroom at my parents' house has a double bed frame that my grandparents originally bought for themselves. (My grandfather and his brothers would always make major purchases together so they could bully salesmen into giving them a group discount, so there are 4 identical bedroom sets in the family.)
Bear in mind that different countries have different standard bed sizes, which may use the same names. North American beds tend to be smaller than their equivalents, at least in Europe. The bed size options in Europe at any particular width tend to be slightly longer than their North American counterparts, and there are common sizes in some countries (like 120x190/200 cm, which is a comfortable size for a single adult) that don't have an equivalent size here.

When my then-husband and I were newlyweds, we went shopping for a bed to replace his that we were sleeping on. The salesperson was quite insistent that we must be mistaken that we were sharing a full mattress, because most people thought that and discovered after measuring that it was actually a queen. You should have seen her face when we came back with 54" x 75" measurements, proving we were definitely two adults sharing a full mattress.
I grew up sleeping on a double bed my mom had inherited from her grandparents, or rather, from one of them. When she first told me as a young adult that they hadn't shared that bed, I was surprised, but she pointed out that (a) they had originally met via correspondence after one of them wrote to a farming magazine for a pen pal, and they turned out not necessarily to have that much in common, though they got along all right and went on to have four boys, and (b) "there wasn't really much birth control in those days, dear." I'd heard for years that the older double beds were ever so slightly smaller than today's full beds that are called by the same name, which explained why my childhood double mattress fit and I can't find a full mattress that does, but from what I can tell that may not be the case. It may just be that the mattresses we used to get happened to squeeze in to the slightly smaller frame and the ones today are more standard.

The queen and the toddler bed are in the main bedroom. I sleep alone in the queen until the toddler wakes up and climbs in (he also usually falls asleep in the big bed). My husband sleeps on a twin in the office/guest room, usually with a cat. My elementary-schooler sleeps on either bunk - his brother is supposed to move in with him but thinks Mama will also sleep in the bunk bed… (we’ve even tried having both boys on one mattress but they get too silly, and the younger pretty much won’t fall asleep without me, specifically, unless I’m actually out of the house).

For example I typically sleep on a queen and have one in storage but since im staying with someone right now Im on a twin.

possessoroflimbs@reddit
King size, two of us. Most couples share a king or queen. Most (privileged) Americans will sleep in a twin bed until adolescence, when they switch to usually a full or queen. I’ve noticed people in other countries sleep in twin beds well into adulthood if living alone, which is uncommon here. I’ve also noticed that well-to-do people in other countries sleep on spring mattresses, which is the bottom of the barrel for us. Memory foam mattresses or mattress toppers are the norm here, I’d say. Americans are very into comfort and that translates hugely to beds. Our bed is one of the most expensive things we usually own, everything from the mattress to the sheets.

"The biggest one I can fit in my bedroom" is usually the mentality- Twin XL when you're in college with a roommate, or if you're a couple you get a full. Full is also an appropriate size for a guest bed. Most people move up to a queen/king as soon as they have a room that can fit one. Goal is always the California King. Couples usually sleep together, sometimes younger kids (age 2-7) sleep in bed with their parents, but it's intermittent. Usually they have their own bed, and when they get scared or have a nightmare or something they'll crawl into bed with mom and dad, and I'd say most people have 2-3 kids in that age range for a time, and for that you'd need at least a queen for +1 and probably at least a king for +2. All that being said, would I Cali King all by myself if I had the room? Absolutely

On rare occasions all 5 of us are in there but that probably won't last much longer with the oldest getting so big.

Queen, me and two 80 lbs dogs who should only take the space of a single person but somehow they feel like three more people in the bed. My husband sleeps on the couch. It’s a full sized pull out and his sleep schedule is very different from mine so he would wake me up when he goes to bed and I’d wake him up when I get up if we were in the same bed. Sometimes a dog joins him but somehow it does not decrease the amount of space available to me at all.

King size. Two fat adults. No pets.
When the Mr and I first started sharing a bed it was a queen size but we were much thinner then and it felt like a football field. In fact we would stay at a friend's house and share a double bed and that was a cosy goodness. Back then we even thought it was cute when the other person farted in their sleep.
Now that we're old and fat we need a bunch of room so it has to be king size. I prefer separate beds but he doesn't.

FarFarAway7337@reddit
Queen size was what my husband and I always had in the US. It was regular length, but that was a bit too short. My husband is tall. Unlike in much of Europe, there is just one large mattress, not two put together. Americans also use one large duvet/comforter, not two individual small ones. Also, a large flat sheet more often than a duvet cover only.
Now we live in CZ. Our bed is what other Czechs have.

I sleep in a full. I'm married but we have wildly different work and therefore sleep schedules, so we sleep separately. The night starts with me and one 30lb dog. By about 1am (so now), it becomes me, a 4yo, a 6yo, and the dog. If husband wanted the join he would not be able, but it works for the four of us in here now.

Used to have a full sized bed but when my boyfriend started sleeping over I concluded that while it worked for me and my dog, it’s not a practical solution for two large adults hahaha. The moment we signed a lease together I told him we’re upgrading. We considered a king but settled on a queen since we want enough room for furniture and walking.

We have a king. Starts with two people, usually contains four by morning.
To answer your other question, the most common size for adults is certainly Queen. Most people go from a crib mattress to a twin and stay in the twin until they move out or get big enough that the twin is kind of silly and move up to a queen. Double/full is also popular enough (slightly smaller than a queen), but the price difference isn’t terribly significant and is usually only chosen if there are size constrictions. King and California king are popular enough that you can buy sheets for them at the store, but they are considered luxuries.

Anianna@reddit
My husband and I switched from a queen to a split king, which is two twin XLs butted up against each other. It's great because we each can have the mattress and bedding we prefer, but still sleep together. His mattress hurts my hips and he hates how soft mine is (our queen mattress was soft because we had got it when I was pregnant and really hurting, but he hated it, which is why this was our choice when we switched).
He's an early sleeper and I'm a late sleeper, so we snuggle for a bit on his side before he gets up for work and then I scootch back to my side to save my poor joints from the pressure. That's when the cats take over his bed and the foot of my bed, so two people and/or up to four cats at any given point.

Two separate Queens and one person each because we sleep in separate bedrooms. When we had dogs, we had huge dogs and so we had a king because two adults and two big dogs in a queen doesn't quite work. That was before we switched to separate rooms. The guest bedroom has a queen also. I'm glad we don't have a mixture anymore because all the sheets fit all the beds LOL

Full size/double bed. Two adults. Occasionally a cat, but usually not for the whole night and he likes to snuggle up in a little ball under someone’s arm. We are both small and like to cuddle as we sleep, plus our bedroom isn’t that big. We could fit a queen, but it doesn’t feel necessary. Sleeping in queen or king sized beds in hotel rooms feels kind of weird at this point.
That being said, if dogs or children young enough to climb into bed randomly were a thing, we would definitely have a queen sized bed.
I think queen size is pretty much average in the US for a couple.

Full size, it's me and my two year old. I had a queen with my ex but downsized for space atm. Moving into a bigger place soon and I'll keep the full bc it's plenty of space for just me. I've shared a full with another adult though and it wasn't bad. Sometimes the queen even felt too big-- too much rolling to get out of bed, but I figure that's probably a less common opinion. I've always heen one to sleep on the literal edge of the bed.
This is not related but I just remembered, i used to sleep so far on the edge of the bed that I would just fall off at night. And it got to be so normal for me to fall off the bed that I stopped waking up and I would just wake up in the floor in the morning 🤷♂️

Queen, two adults Kings are probably the most common for adults. Twins for kids/teens, and less common size of Full usually for teens

King. It's supposed to be me and partner but a 55 lbs dog and small child always end up in it too.
We were married for 10 years with a queen bed before we had a room big enough to hold a king bed. It would not have worked in our old house at all.

Queen, and I'm typically solo but once per week my fella shares it with me. And once per week I sleep at his, but he has a full, so one size down.
We could probably share a cot. We mostly just cling to our respective edges.

I had a twin as an adult and all my friends made fun of me. It was usually just me and it was pretty snug fit to share with a lover but they never complained to me, lol.
Now i have a queen and i sleep in it with my dog.
improbdrunk@reddit
A European queen is actually a king. It's not a gender thing, just there's a very real chance people are talking about different sizes here.

I have a twin day bed, but I also live alone in a studio. It's me and the dogs.
If I had a bigger place with an actual bedroom, I would probably wanna upgrade to a full sized bed, at the very least.

Queen, two people sleep in it. It’s not big enough but, we paid a few thousand dollars for the mattress so we’re waiting on it to wear a bit more before upgrading to a king.
