Father's day, is it awkward for anyone else?

Zanki@reddit

Well I was forced to make and take home a father's day card for my dead dad when I was in school. Not only did I get in trouble for refusing to make a card and being forced, I then got in trouble when I went home and mum found the damn thing in my bag. Teacher caught me trying to throw it out and made me take it home. The 'my teacher made me make it' excuse didn't fly. She was pissed and thought I did it just to hurt her (that's what she always screamed at me if I made a mistake). I'm shocked I didn't get hit. I was terrified. She tore it up and threw it out. I told my teacher my dad was dead. I wasn't shy about it. He died a few months before I was born so for me, it wasn't a big deal, but I know I wasn't the only kid in a weird situation there, I was just the one who spoke up and none of the others followed after that. That teacher was an absolute ass hole. I would punch him if I ran into him now. I don't care how old he is. He deserves it and far more.

I've noticed this recently, there's no amazing deals anymore. I'm lucky to get 50p off something going out of date that day at any supermarket now. It sucks. I remember walking out of a Morrisons a couple of years back with two full bags of food that only cost a couple of quid because no one wanted the vegetarian/vegan stuff, so the women priced it up in front of us and gave it all to me. 20p for kieves etc. No one was fighting over the food. People were waiting their turn calmly and I just got lucky. No one wanted my gross fake meat! The people working it were distributing the cheap food fairly to everyone waiting so there was no fighting.

Aldi still had good pizza for under £2. Some have gone up in the last month though. I noticed the curries I buy went up by 40p. I'm not happy about that.

It's cheaper than seeing a movie in the US though. It's £12 to see a movie here, but we get reclining chairs. Back where my boyfriend lives you can see a movie for £5, but it's on the old chairs. I like the recline seats, I'm less fidgety in them.

Somehow, when my flat was empty and the power turned off at the breaker for two and a half months, it racked up a charge of £170. Now I'm sure it was a estimate because we had a fight to get our new provider to take our readings seriously. We were charged £17 by octopus to be with them for less than two days for gas and electric. I wasn't even staying in the flat, I was mostly at my friends place next door because this place was disgusting. Oh and even though we proved to octopus we moved in on the 25th, they sent the previous owners bill to collections and now they're hounding us for it, even though it's not our bill to pay. Their website doesn't work to submit evidence that we have only just moved in and give them the previous owners name and address. I'm scared they're going to start coming round and demanding money we don't owe.

I hobbled in on the left. I don't bruise or swell much when I break something. They checked my knee, ignored the fact that my leg hurt, not my knee. Told me my knee was fine and kicked me out. I kept insisting it was my leg, then they told me they'd call security if I don't leave and to not come back unless I have a real injury. I had to stand and work ten hours a day on that leg because work wouldn't give me any time off or believe me when I told them I had a broken leg. I tried my GP, they sent me for an MRI eventually that confirmed I'd broken my leg. The pain I was still experiencing was due to nerve damage caused by me being forced to walk on it every single day since I broke it. What fixed it? Quitting that job and resting my leg properly over a year later. Since then I've broken fingers four times, my hand once and the only thing that was treated was the dog bite through my hand. I barely swelled, zero bruising. One finger was verified after a GP saw my makeshift splint and I explained the situation. A broken bone isn't a reason to go in. When I complained later of nerve damage and no strength in my hand after a dog bite, I was told by a physio that I was lying for attention and needed therapy, not physio. Got switched to a new woman who did new checks, including nerve tests, I have severe nerve damage in my thumb and moderate in all but two fingers. That's why it's so damn weak. Oh I also had dengue fever and they just sent me home because they didn't know what was wrong with me. I figured it out later. The pain in my joints was some of the worst pain I've ever felt. I also couldn't bring my heart rate or fever down. That sucked and was scary. I don't have a fever right now. No increased heart rate. Currently no pain because I haven't moved yet. This is the problem. There's no constant pain, or if there is, I'm not feeling it right now.

I have signs of appendicitis right now. I went to the GP only to be asked if I'm sure I'm not pregnant or on my period. Then told they've already booked me in for a scan so I just need to wait for that. The pain won't go away, I'm scared but I'm not in agony, so no one is taking me seriously. I'm not going to A&E. I've been kicked out of there with a broken leg before. I'm not going through that again. They think I'm just after pain meds and wasting their time, even though I always refuse pain meds. They make me a little high and that makes me unmask (ADHD), it's not fun. The pain starts up and gets worse when I move around. I don't feel good, it's hurting more as my bowls move. It's half two in the morning and I'm awake because it started hurting again because my stomach is bloated because I've had digestive issues for a while now and it does that sometimes. But if I go in and say my stomach hurts more because of bad gas they'll think it's just digestive issues... I've been in pain since Thursday. I can't do much of anything. When the pain hits I get weak and shaky. Yay me...

At what age was you first allowed to cook for yourself at home?

I think around 9/10. I was allowed to use the kettle around six to make her a coffee. I was allowed to use the microwave around then too. I was making sandwiches around that age too. The only issue was I was only allowed to make what she let me have, so it was rare. If I was caught making extra food because I was hungry, there was hell to pay. We weren't poor, she just didn't want me eating like a normal person.

I was in America with my American friends and they were all debating on getting a taxi to the closest Target. I look on Google maps and it's like a mile away. I was just like come on, it's only a short walk. They were acting like I was crazy. I started walking, then eventually everyone was with me. One guy was so unhealthy I thought he was going to have a heart attack in his early 20s. I was amazed. We were walking at a snails pace. I may have told the out of breath ones they needed to do this every single day, just go out for a little walk because you're literally killing yourselves. I was scared for them. The next time I saw them, they could walk to the store so I guess it worked.

Omg, big open road. Zero traffic and a cop watching the crossing. My American friends grabbed me and taught me about jaywalking the first day I was in the US. Can't cross unless the green man says you can, even if there's zero cars. Absolutely ridiculous. It was crazy hot as well, but the cop was watching. We had to wait five minutes for those lights to change. I did cross that same road later, without the lights saying I should go. My friends were not happy! I liked NYC, the rule became just cross safely after a day or so and I stuck with that. No one cares there!

Three weeks??? Last time I tried to get a simple phonecall to reinstate my asthma meds, I had to wait two and a half months. Two and a half months without my meds because it wasn't seen as a priority because some women on the reception refused to book me any earlier. This is the same woman who kept telling me there were no appointments to get the implant out of my arm, it was full. The "full" appointment list was just a Google doc and I wasn't the first one who complained about that.

I was in the toilet one time. I walk in and this little boy has the door wide open, doing a Butters, peeing into the toilet. I was amused. Went into my cubicle only for the little boy to find his mum's and ask her if she was doing a big poo. I was gone. Super cute and funny kid. I hope he didn't get in too much trouble. Same toilet, different time, I rescued a stuck kid from a cubicle. No one could get it open. I tried a few different methods and managed to get it open. If it didn't open I was just going to climb over, but that was my last resort.

I used to have a little torch I kept very well hidden. I used to play my Gameboy a lot and used to blame it on needing new batteries all the time when it was really that little torch zapping the power. I was reading after bedtime. The ring road is pretty good for getting around the city quickly and it rarely ever gets clogged on the actual road. I used to live there and found driving on it easier than the other roads. They're slowly taking the city center apart. Unfortunately they took out most of the unique shops though when they closed down a huge portion of it. Some places have relocated but most haven't. I visited friends a few weeks back and saw the noodle bar is now across from the banks, the gay bar moved onto the same street. I saw one of the Chinese supermarkets I loved is now above a restaurant near smiths. It's interesting, but sad so many stores were lost. Tesco is now in a bank??? That was a weird change.

Well my place keeps getting threatening letters from collections after octopus sent the account to them when we didn't know who owed them money. Could have been the previous tenant or the old owner. Now we're having to deal with that. We paid octopus £17 to use them as a provider for less than two days. That's as much as we owe. Now we have to prove we have just moved in and don't own nearly £200. It's fun.

I used to, not anymore. I didn't have a car because I didn't really need one. Then I couldn't get anywhere during COVID so I bought one, relearned how to drive and now I don't use it often, but enough to justify owning it. I need to go to the hospital in a month, I'll be taking the bus if I can't get a lift. I'm not dealing with that car park, no thank you. Sometimes it's so busy you can't move and get fined for no leaving fast enough, even though traffic is at a standstill.

I was once written up for doing that. I woke up started getting ready for work and puked. I phoned in as soon as I knew someone would be in the store, but I started puking as they picked up so my ex took the call for me. So I got written up for not calling in an hour ahead of time to let them know I was sick. No one was in the store until half an hour before it opened. I also got in trouble for giving the store number out to my ex. I was like wth, I gave him my phone, he does not have the store number, he took over the call because I was puking. I called in asap, I wasn't even awake an hour before my shift started and telling me to call a supervisor on their private phones an hour before? Wth? I don't even have their private numbers and they would be pissed if I did that. In the end this big meeting to try and fire me over a big incident was cleared up by me showing them my call logs. My phone made the call, then showing them my daily alarms to wake up. I was up only half an hour before my shift started. I showed them my contacts, not a single supervisor in there. So yeah, that was fun. I hated that place. The supervisors were horrendous people who liked the power and control. I caught a 32 year old bullying the 16 year olds and spent half my time protecting the younger staff from these monsters. I became their main target after one guy quit and they fired another guy and girl. My manager was pissed when I quit and handed him a detailed account of what they'd been doing to me and others when he wasn't around and the systematic abuse. When I quit, others followed pretty quickly because they couldn't handle it/they didn't want to be fired. One poor guy was framed in a big way for something he would never have done. I knew this kid well. Apparently there was this huge investigation, but nothing really came of it. The way they abused people cannot be proved well. The silent treatment, the little insults etc etc. They did every single thing the company handbook lists as bullying in the workplace and then some. Also, one supervisor was fired for having a medical emergency and not calling in. He was stuck in A&E having a prolonged asthma attack and there's no signal in the hospital building. No data. Nothing. At the time there was no public WiFi either. There was no way he could have called in and surviving the attack was more of a priority than calling into work.

I ran home from school to watch the new episodes of the Power Rangers on TV. Time Force had only just started airing that month and I was super into it. I turned the TV on in time to see a tower fall live. I wasn't that old, but old enough to know I'd just seen something really, really bad. I ended up watching the news until 4, when the Rangers started, then I was switching between Fox Kids and the news until it was over. Instead of watching the Rangers again on +1, I just kept the news on. What I really remember was the weather. It was beautiful outside. The skies were blue, it was warm, sunny. It was a beautiful day. I remember sitting in front of the TV, watching the news. I was young enough to be wishing the power rangers would save those people or Frank Parker would go back in time and save them, but I knew they weren't real and couldn't help, but I still wished it. I knew I'd just watched the world change. That was the weirdest part. The world changed and I watched it happen. It sucked. The next day, my crazy school was subdued. That was weird, but we'd all just watched people jumping/falling from a building, people dying in a plane crash, the towers collapsing and knowing there weren't going to be any bodies to recover because the building was too big a pancaked. Being a smart kid sucked sometimes, I understood too much of what was happening.

Did you have Japanese day in Year 7?

Posted by haddock420@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 59 comments

Zanki@reddit

No. But when I was in sixth form everything Asian was banned after a guy killed a bunch of people at a college in America. The media decided to tell the world he was obsessed with Korean horror movies. It was absolutely insane how my school reacted. I was very badly bullied and now they thought I was going to hurt them (I never would). I was told by my teachers I needed to quit my karate class, because it was threatening the other students, stop watching Asian stuff in my free time and be normal. My peers treated me even worse. One girl started screaming at me down a corridor for standing near her, we were waiting for our next class and the door was locked. I wasn't paying any attention to who was around me and had absolutely no idea she was there until she started screaming... I had an innocent Death Note live action wallpaper on my personal laptop and I was told it was inappropriate. Didn't have the name of the movie on it, no one knew what it was. I argued it was Japanese, not Korean. I was told it was Asian and to get rid of it. So I changed my wallpaper to the Wild Seven from Battle Royale 2 in protest. My teacher took one look at it, realised he was going to lose that fight and gave up. As you can tell I was from a very white area, there was one east Asian kid in my sixth form and two others in the entire rest of the school. Probably only ten or so none white kids in the entire school of 1000+ kids. I think the worst part about the whole thing was if anyone in my school actually got to know me, they would have known I would have never hurt them. I don't want to hurt anyone, it's not fun being forced to hurt another person. I only ever fought back in school if I really had to. They hurt me far more than I hurt anyone else. Yes, I was into those weird horror movies, the original Oldboy is a movie I watched once and never wanted to see again. I prefer my horror to be more paranormal, ghosts, demons, not human. This was very human and gross. Battle Royale is an exception!

Bit younger again and yeah, completely normal. I think the majority crackdown happened towards 2010. Before then I could buy age rated things without an ID with ease. I think I was 18 when they started demanding IDs everywhere I went. At 16, buying 18 rated games and dvds was easy, I did it all the time, then I needed ID at all times from 18. No one cared as long as you didn't cause any trouble. I was encouraged to drink with my karate class before I was 18, never did, but I could easily have done. The fear of my mum finding out anything was enough to keep me in line, even after I turned 18. I think I was 23 before I actually dared drink anything, and older when I first had a drink in front of her. She was pissed. I was still getting into places before I was 18.

Play fighting carefully with my boyfriend. We have to be careful, last year I was showing him how people spar in karate compared to other styles and he did the beginner panic thing and smashed his arm into my hand. I didn't have a tight fist because I wasn't going to actually hit him. Busted my finger. Stupid accident. It's not the first time a beginner has done something stupid and taken out a finger. I had a little fun scaring a guy before a Kung Fu class after he broke my finger a few days before. It was hilarious watching him panic, sifu was like, crap! When I got to him I just grinned and told him it was cool, accidents happen and I wasn't really mad. Anyway, me and my boyfriend play fight in silly ways and never actually hit each other, more like a little nudge, mostly done in slow mo! As for actually hitting someone, outside of martial arts? Hmm, I don't think I've ever really punched anyone. Kicked, elbowed, but punching? Not really. Maybe the kid in sixth form who threw my personal laptop across the room for absolutely no reason? He just walked in, grabbed my bag and threw it for absolutely no reason. He knew it was in there. Teacher told him he deserved it when he walked in and caught me hitting and kicking the other kid. Well, after I angrily told him what the kid had done. Plus I'm not stupid, I didn't hit him anywhere that would give him a visible injury, that helped. That was a long time ago. Not had to physically defend myself in a long time and I hope it stays that way. It's not a good feeling, hurting someone. I didn't learn martial arts to hurt others, I learned because I just love it. I don't know why, I just do.

I lived in a terraced and had to put something up because when crazy kicked off across the street, I'd get dragged in if she could see me. I'd just contact the police, but even if she was screaming to call them, she wasn't happy when they arrived. Best to stay out of that chaos. I only had the curtains down a couple of days... Her on/off boyfriend was a right ass hole and was usually the cause of the chaos. He smashed all her windows in one night just to get back inside and torment her more. It was awful. Police eventually arrived. After I'd called them I went on the chat and gave them a play by play of what was happening in case they needed it to get him. I don't think they really cared because he was back the next day causing chaos. It was a nice street in a nice area otherwise. She was ok when drama wasn't going down and she loved her dogs. I helped her with them one night after they got into a bad scrap and hurt each other. She'd just had a hard life and made a bad decision in her partner.

COVID was in the UK in late December, early January. I got it and it was hell. We didn't know what it was and I ended up at an out hours doctor, begging to be seen because I couldn't breathe. My chest was so bad and they just shrugged it off and sent me home. They said I had a bad chest infection and to just keep taking my asthma meds... I argued they weren't working (I could only whisper because my throat would close up if I tried to talk and laughing was terrifying) and eventually I was prescribed a steroid pill and it felt like I could finally get air deep into my lungs. It took me three months to recover. That severe sore throat messed up my voice permanently and my asthma got worse. I also have allergies now. That was an interesting one. I was one of the people demanding the UK shut down asap because what I had was absolutely terrifying and if I was that sick, other people weren't going to make it. I wore a mask before it was mandatory because I was still recovering from whatever I'd had, not knowing it was COVID. I had an old man literally point and laugh at me when I was still struggling to walk around, because I was wearing a mask. How did I figure out it was COVID? Well when I got COVID again, I had the exact same symptoms and it started with that awful sore throat. Plus when all my friends got it at the beginning of lockdown, I was the only one spared, because I'd already had it. I had immunity thankfully so I didn't have to go through it alone (I lived alone at the time).

I got a bunch of random points from scanning for other people when they realised mine worked, with the blessing of a stressed employee who couldn't do anything to help. I explained how to add the card to their Google wallet so I'm guessing a ton of people did that when the app came back online. That was really bad, there's no backup system if the app goes down. People have to pay full price or leave their stuff behind. I also won't be surprised if Tesco go this route, but I can also see them collapsing hard if everyone decides it's ridiculous and go shop elsewhere. It would be suicide to do that right now.

Do you speed or know why others speed?

Sometimes, but not by a crazy amount. Empty long road, can see for miles, no speed cameras, sure. Never in an area where there's pedestrians or in medium/heavy traffic. I'm always mindful of people pulling into my lane as well. My boyfriend speeds far more than me in areas he shouldn't speed. It's a losing battle with him on that. Luckily his car has damn good breaks because his close call would have been my car hitting a person if I tried driving around like that (my car has a huge breaking distance).

Have you ever been the subject of a Facebook neighbourhood watch or gossip post?

My car caused a lot of drama where I used to live. Basically there's no off street parking. Me and my friends had a car each to get to work. Wherever I parked my car was an issue. Me and my neighbours all had our own parking spots unofficially. I parked across the street in front of a corner lot that wasn't actually part of our street officially. We had to have a permit to park on our street. My car was also insured, taxed and had it's MOT. Nothing wrong with it. The amount of times I saw traffic wardens and the council surrounding my car, looking in the windows etc was insane. Some angry old woman came out and started arguing that my car, that I admit only moved once a week during quarantine, was abandoned. I was like, I live right there, you know that and you know it's my car. It didn't stop until I moved away. My friends saw people checking out my car and would tell me when it was happening. No idea what I did to piss her off. My cars tyres also mysteriously were punctured one night. That was fun. I was parked in front of my house when that happened in my friends spot (he used his car daily so it was fair) to try and avoid anymore car drama. Didn't work.

Do you know anyone who survived The Blitz? Do people still talk about it?

Not in it exactly, but my grandad lived on a farm in Lancashire as a child. When the German bombers were fleeing Liverpool, they'd sometimes head his way and if they had any bombs left, they'd drop them to lighten the load to get away from the UK fighter pilots. His dad had fought in WWI and he refused to get out of bed when the sirens went off. He said he got up for the last war, he isn't getting up for this one. So while my grandad and his mum were huddled under the stairs, he stayed in bed. One time a bomb landed so close it took out all their windows. When they emerged, my grandad found his dad still in bed, covered in glass. That's the only story I have. My grandparents are long gone.

Why do lots of cyclists not use designated cycle lanes?

Parked cars, huge pot holes, abrupt ends with nowhere to go, pedestrians, can't ride as fast. Some are great, but a lot are just not maintained or become parking spaces.

I just thought it was hilarious, get hurt, get a wet paper towel like it was going to fix a broken bone. They tried it more than once!

We used ours. I got one hell of a black eye from one and a huge swollen face. I tripped on a mat that had been set up wrong and fell face first into the frame. I screamed, it hurt so bad. I was dragged from the room and given a wet paper towel to stick on my face. I should have been sent home, instead I had to go back to class, with an obvious head injury, finish up PE. Get changed and was then kicked out of my last class because my face was distracting everyone. A kid with a very obvious head injury was kicked out into the hallway to sit alone. My classmates didn't care, the older kids were panicking when they saw my face. Also, the stupid class assistant tried to blame me for the incident in front of me. Me being the impulsive kid quickly corrected her, told her I tripped on the middle of the mats because one was put over the top of the other. It was a stupid accident, I didn't try and dive between the bars, I'm not that stupid. The head teacher checked my story, as everything was still set up and verified it. From what I remember after school ended, I was slow in getting myself packed up to go home. I remember that much. The kids in year six ran to my house to tell my mum I was hurt. When I was about to leave she appeared asking wth happened. Instead of getting me checked out, she made me walk around Tesco with her, didn't even ask how I was feeling or anything. The next day my face was so swollen my eye wouldn't open. She dragged me out for a day of shopping when I just wanted to stay home and sleep. Tuesday came around and my teachers were all mad at me. Turns out the headteacher had them sit through extra mat training Monday after school. No one cared that I may have cracked my skull (again very bad injury that wasn't checked because no one cared), that my eye was still swollen shut, they were pissed at me and told me they were because they had to sit through a stupid lecture. I agree, that was stupid, but blaming a ten year old for an accident? It wasn't fair. No one cared I was hurt apart from a couple of kids in year six. Everyone was just mad at me. Eventually it healed, took weeks and I still have a little lump of scar tissue under my skin right where I hit the frame even now.

What’s something that’s way too overhyped right now but everyone still seems obsessed with?

I want a yellow or orange car badly. My car is classed as "grey" but it's more beige. I like cars with colour, hell, even white is better than the colour of my car. I just chose the best out of the cars I could afford, I didn't pay much attention to the colour.

I agree. It halves cooking time. I don't really care either way if I have one or not, but my boyfriend has one, so I have one and I use it since it preheats faster than the oven. I only use the oven for pizza nowadays.
