So my mom didn't believe my cousin she got locked out in the 80's.

I only recall this happening once. It was summer and my mom locked my brother and I out after we kept coming back inside. I’m not sure what mom was up to, but clearly we were on her last nerve. When we came home for dinner the door was already unlocked.

Who was on your school lunchbox?

I got my brother’s hand-me-down Snoopy lunchbox which I used until 3rd grade and then got the red Tupperware lunchbox, which I thought was super cool. 😎

Does anyone remember Ring Around the Collar as an issue for adults?

My dad wore a suit & tie to the office every day. I remember my mom removing, reversing, and then resewing the collars onto my Dad’s dress shirts once the stains could not longer be removed in the wash.

Manual Transmission

TopService6890@reddit

I learned to drive on a manual and drove manual cars exclusively until I was 35. When it was time for my kids to get their licenses, my requirement for them is that they have to drive a manual transmission car. I think driving a manual transmission makes you a better driver overall because you have to stay engaged in what’s going on around you; it also makes it really difficult to text while driving. My son (20) drives a manual VW Jetta and my daughter (15) is currently learning to drive manual.

I got a visit from HR for not wearing pantyhose in 1993; I was 22. My manager had seen me put lotion on my legs in the restroom; prior to seeing that she had assumed I was wearing hosiery. I remember telling the HR lady that it was unfair/sexist that women had to pay for hose - which you could maybe wear twice, if lucky - while men could invest in a five-pack of Gold Toe socks and be set for the year. I wore pantyhose for the next week or so and then went back to not wearing them. #rebel 😉

What age were you when you had your kids?

I had my first when I was 34 and my second/last at 39. They’re now 20 and 15, respectively; I kind of wish I had started earlier because I’d really like to retire in a few years. It all evens out I guess, I just traded freedom in my 20’s for working like a dog in my 60’s.

Which clique did you belong to in High School?

TopService6890@reddit

I was kind of a floater in high school—I’d been in the same school district since kindergarten, so I knew and got along with pretty much everyone. If I had a ‘clique,’ it was a mix of cheer, choir, ASB, swim team, and the AP crowd.

I don’t intend to go even with future grandkids. I’ll happily pay for their tickets, though, and then my kids can show me the photos afterwards. Win-win! 🙂

Go to Disneyland. Last summer, my brother and his family were visiting for our mom’s 85th birthday, so we all (excluding mom) spent three days at Disneyland/California Adventure. At about 10:30pm on our last day, my husband and I were sitting on a bench waiting for everyone else to get off “it’s a small world” (I despise that ride) when it occurred to me that the sparkle is gone. I turned to my husband and said “I’m just taking it all in, because it just occurred to me that I have no interest in ever coming to Disneyland again.” Disneyland is so crowded now, it just isn’t fun anymore. I got no pushback from my husband; he grew up in Anaheim, and worked at the park as a teen so he was over Disneyland many years ago.

Mainly hung out at Plaza Camino Real - Carlsbad, CA. For back to school shopping my mom would take us down to Fashion Valley and/or UTC in San Diego. North County Faire, in Escondido, opened when I was in high school.

How many of you can/do sew?

Posted by SpreadsheetSiren@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 633 comments

TopService6890@reddit

My mom sewed well enough to make some of our clothes when we were little. When I was in high school I had a specific vision of a dress I wanted. Couldn’t find it in the stores so taught myself to sew (with some guidance from my mom) and made the dress. By the time I was in college I was sewing and/or altering formal dresses for many of my sorority sisters.

Are you also a "We didn't have cable so we only had three channels" Gen-X?

TopService6890@reddit

I first heard of “cable TV” when I was about 11 years old but it wasn’t even available in my neighborhood for another couple of years. I remember the cable guy coming to install it at our house the summer before I turned 14 (my freshman year in high school). The first thing I remember watching was Blue Lagoon (scandalous)!

How many pills are you taking?

TopService6890@reddit

I’m 55 and take one pill. I have to take it for four more years to (hopefully) keep my breast cancer from recurring. Other than that, I just take vitamin supplements. Fingers crossed that I continue to benefit from my Dad’s genetics (low blood pressure, low triglycerides, low cholesterol, no diabetes) because he’s 85 and doesn’t take a single pill.

Fast Times at Ridgemont High and Valley Girl. Grew up in San Diego County and Fast Times was exactly like my high school; the stoner surfers, the guy selling concert tickets at school, the cars, the after school jobs, and the slimy older guy hitting on high school girls - all of it perfect! Valley Girl had the most accurate depiction of the parties, the school dances, going to the mall, and the club scene. Also, the Driver’s Ed scene is spot on!

I remember a lot of cinnamon flavored items; close-up toothpaste, various brands of gum, jolly ranchers, Brach’s cinnamon disks, cinnamon gummy bears, and I remember in 7th grade everyone chewing on toothpicks that had been soaked in cinnamon oil.
