Does anyone remember Ring Around the Collar as an issue for adults?

I know we all grew up fully aware of quicksand.
But does anyone else remember those ring around the collar commercials? I always thought when I grow up I’ll have to deal with that.
Overall-Avocado-7673@reddit
Remember the ancient Chinese secret?

Wisk!
OkHighlight6213@reddit
I loved that detergent. It’s been discontinued and Persil took its place.😐
VioletaBlueberry@reddit
My best friend in high school's house smelled like wisk! didn't know that was the source until a few years later... right before they discontinued it.
bobthenob1989@reddit
I like the hypothesis that air conditioning helped eliminate ring around the collar.
Apawling_Behavior@reddit
So true! Quicksand, and ring around the collar, were major issues at the time. There was also this time when I was soaking my hands, and it turned out it wasn’t my usual hand soak. but actually a gentle soap made from both palm and olive. Amazing. Ok now I gotta run. It’s time to make the donuts!
ejsell@reddit
Did Calgon take you away?
Bright_Broccoli1844@reddit
I wish Calgon would take me away sometimes.
Apawling_Behavior@reddit
almost.
but I looked around and realized I was alone at the top of a cold and wintery mountain. But then I realized, I was still right here at home and I had just eaten a York peppermint patty.

Head-Major9768@reddit
Synchronicity is real. I was just thinking about this topic whilst pretreating laundry. Was everyone sweatier then?
DVDragOnIn@reddit
We might have been sweatier back then. Not all cars had air conditioning or the a/c broke a lot more often than it does now. My college dorm wasn’t air conditioned (now each room has its own unit because that dorm is OLD). In contrast, my son never went to a school that wasn’t air conditioned, including all his college dorm rooms.

I am a theatrical costumer, and a big part of my job involves doing show laundry. Ring around the collar is very much a problem with makeup on actors. I’m working an opera right now with a ton of white tuxedo shirts, and let me tell you, pre-treating that shit makes a real difference. Also, the younger half of the crew had no idea when all us fogies started off on ring around the collar.
Wild_Read9062@reddit
I’m an adult. I literally have that problem. It sucks. Shout will only get you so far. Eventually you realize a white collar will only go so far.
YouShouldBeHigher@reddit
Try pre-treating with a clarifying shampoo. I use Suave men's on my husband's shirts. I soak his pillow cases in the washer with just the shampoo before I throw in the rest of the bedding, too. Much cheaper than Shout, too.
bgplsa@reddit
Yeah in all seriousness I’m a greasy sweaty guy and my white collars all get ruined

Spring-Available@reddit
I get makeup on collared shirts but what I’ve found that works is I spray dry shampoo on my shirt collars before I wear them. It doesn’t stop the makeup getting on but it comes out in the wash.
Cold_in_Lifes_Throes@reddit
I worked at a dry cleaners as a teen and can absolutely verify that ring around the collar was definitely a thing. Men who wore suits in the summer would have it on their button down shirts. I live in the south so heat was the reason and sweat left a stain inside the collar of many men’s shirts.
Mister-Spook@reddit
Everyone smoked back then, so a lot of stuff was nicotine stained.
ScooterMcTavish@reddit
Plus people did not do laundry as often. And more natural fabrics that held stains, like cotton. Amazing what they do with synthetic fabric these days.
Sure-Coffee-8241@reddit
Yes and it’s still a thing for anyone who wears white dress shirts
No_Parking_4195@reddit
It's possible that the laundry care industry made some breakthroughs back in the day and now our clothes are getting cleaner than they used to. Or maybe we're all better about washing our necks in the shower. Or both. Who knows?
okenthusiasm89@reddit
My dad had a desk job but my mom always pre-scrubbed his collars before taking them to the laundromat and he always wore an undershirt under his button-down shirts.
WorshipHim9713@reddit
Men don’t dress the same now, that they did back when we were young. Life is more informal now days.

um, it still is bro. I’ve ruined a dozen good dress shirts in the hot Oklahoma sun. I just throw them away because Dawn and Zout don’t work.
LevelPerception4@reddit
Why not take them to the dry cleaners?
Future_Inspector6645@reddit
I used to deal with it. Rubbing alcohol on the neck helps.
Not an issue anymore because nobody wear ties daily.

A friend’s uncle’s neighbor actually died from it. Scary times.
bgplsa@reddit
At least he didn’t get nuked, happened to my best friend. At least that’s what my mom said.

jcsnipes1969@reddit
It’s still very much a thing. I’ve had to clean collars at work that looked like someone wiped their bum with it.
Snarkan_sas@reddit
Had a conversation with my husband about this just last week! Why didn’t men, specifically, not wash their neck?
LevelPerception4@reddit
It might have been regional. Ever go to NYC in August? First, I’d be covered with a film of sweat from the humidity, and then grit and dirt (from the air?) would stick to it. Or maybe it’s individual, Manhattan is full of beautiful people who always look impeccable, and then there’s me, straggling along like Pig Pen with an Afro as my hair visibly puffs up and frizzes out.
I’ve never gotten a ring around my collar, but I’ve never worn a shirt buttoned to the neck in August either.
MadPiglet42@reddit
Everyone smoked, everywhere.
havanesegirlmom@reddit
Did they not shower ?
Psycosteve10mm@reddit
The ring around the collar became less of an issue with the blue collar worker having access to polo shirts as the new work uniform. The ring around the collar was dirt and sweat that would get ground into the shirts. With more people not wearing a button-up white shirt, it became less of a problem.

If you wear a dress shirt to work everyday, it happens. Even if you shower. Largely dependent upon how much you sweat. Not many people wear dress shirts with ties, so it's not a big deal anymore. Also, those that do wear them get their shirts professionally cleaned and pressed now.
JapanDave@reddit
Yep, I feel this is it. It’s seemed to go away because not many people wear ties everyday. I often do and no matter how much I wash, it happens. The commercials for ring around the collar are still a thing in Japan, btw, where wearing neckties is much more common than in the US.

Not sure I get the quicksand reference? I've never been in quicksand, but back before developers built on every inch of waterfront property in Tampa Bay, there were some remote-ish areas on the "Bay" side of PinellasCounty (not Gulf). Mangroves and "sucking sand" not quiet sand but not mud and you could sink down an struggle to walk free. I went in too far on an old horse and it was a little harrowing.
mmpjd@reddit

I lived in Tampa Bay in the 90s. One of the news stations took a camera to those mangroves and found it was a crusing spot.
The video showed a reporter trying to question a guy that was speed walking to his car to get away...
Reporter: what were you doing in the mangroves, sir?
Guy (head bent down to keep his face hidden with hands stuck in his pockets): Fishing.
Reporter: Then where's your fishing pole, sir?
Lemon-Cake-8100@reddit
Yes, but I found an ancient Chinese secret to fix it, so now everything is OK.
Starkville@reddit
We were just talking about this!
My theory is that we don’t hear about this because men aren’t wearing dress shirts very much anymore. And not using hair oil/brylcreem the way they used to.
My husband does wear dress shirts for work, and every so often they start to get a little ring around the collar. Some Dawn Platinum power wash foam takes care of it.
havanesegirlmom@reddit
I was very resistant to the whole Powerwash movement but it’s incredible. I use it for everything
ginoenidok@reddit
In the basement I've got probably 20 suits, more sportcoats, and around 100+ neckties. Other than a funeral or something haven't worn them in forever.
There's no market for them even resale so they sit there in moth balls.
I used to get ring around the collar butodern detergents always tool care of it.

Will1732@reddit

Bogside_Bibliophile@reddit
Men’s hair ended at the collar back then, and they wore hair oil. I think that caused a a lot of the dreaded “ring”.
havanesegirlmom@reddit
Yes !
NarwhalPositive8232@reddit
That would make sense. I have a long beard and tried beard oil to soften it. The oils left light brown stains on my light colored shirts so I stopped using it.
DifferentWindow1436@reddit
It's actually on the inside of the collar. It happens if you wear white dress shirts buttoned up (like with a tie). Not sure how many people do that anymore. I have to for work.
CommitteeOfOne@reddit
I deal with it on a pretty constant basis with dress shirts.
eljefesuprem@reddit

I was just talking with my wife about this last weekend when I noticed my own dress shirt had a very light case of "ring around the collar".

Insightseekertoo@reddit
You must live in a moderate climate or move from a/c to a/c. In Brazil, it did not matter how often you showered and scrubbed your neck. The natural oils in your skin and sweat from 90 degrees Fahrenheit with 80% humidity just created the ring around the collar. I had to bleach the heck out of my shirts and replace them on the regular.
Beret_of_Poodle@reddit
Yeah, I live in the US, in the midwest. So it's bound to be a lot different than Brazil. TIL
0905-15@reddit
But it’s not. Sweat and oils over the course of the day will stain dress shirts, particularly when worn with a tie so it’s rubbing against your neck all day
FBS351@reddit
Men used to wear collared shirts on virtually any kind of job, including ones where you got dirty, so no amount of washing would have prevented it. I worked at a dusty lumber yard and RATC was definiitely an issue
FloridaSalsa@reddit
Wasn't Wisk the remedy for that? Where did it go?
HearingDue2119@reddit
Clothes don’t last long enough anymore to develop the ring
DadofJM@reddit

overmonk@reddit
I remember the ads about it and I have gotten it in a few shirts that lasted a while. I don’t wear this type of shirt often anymore so if I needed to look sharp I’d probably have to go shopping for a new white shirt.

I would get it on white shirts when I wore and tie and would sweat a decent amount all day. These days I don’t wear ties for more than a few hours if at all, air conditioning is pretty much everywhere now, and I don’t t wear white as much. As fashion has gotten more relaxed, I don’t think people see the issue as much. I also haven’t had to get shoes re-soled in years.

My dad wore a suite and tie to work for at least 30 years. I've probably worn a suit and tie less than 30 days in my entire life. I've gone on an interview and the VP was wearing a Hawaiian shirt and flip flops so what's the point of wearing a suit?
Winter-eyed@reddit
Yes. My dad had it wrenching on machines all day. I had to take over the housework for a year while my mom was a caregiver to my grandma after she had a medical condition hit and had to learn how to treat that laundry. Hand treating it with GOOP hand cleaner worked best.
SynXis_ps2@reddit
