What thing have you recently done for the last time?

As we get older we start to have anti-milestones. By that I mean things we do for the last time ever, whether we realize it or not at the time. For example, I recently re-roofed my house by myself. This was the fifth roof I’ve done in my life and after I finished (and my back and knees locked up for 3 days from the work), I realized that i’m now officially too old to be climbing on roofs while bending over and nailing shingles. What is your recent “last time” milestone?

Roofing your own home is impressive as hell and I'd be wrecked if I attempted that even in my prime. I still go up on my roof and my mom's roof to clean out the gutters, much to the chagrin of my husband. Last time I did my mom's house, one of my tennis shoes started feeling weird and it was because the heat on the roof had melted the adhesive holding the sole on the shoe and it was sliding off. My husband and I painted the entire exterior of my mom's house in 2021 and we will not be doing that again. I painted the entire interior and ceilings of my house when we moved into it and I am still okay with painting inside the house, even with ladder involvement but outside, never again. About a year and a half ago I had the opportunity to ride a mechanical alligator at an event. Was it a good idea? No, it was not. Did I do it anyway? Hell yeah because how many times in your life will THAT opportunity present itself? Fortunately the only thing injured was my pride and I blame the slippery ass leggings I was wearing for my poor showing. I'd like to say it was the last time I would do this but if I had a chance, I WOULD probably opt to go ahead and attempt some redemption from my initial poor performance.

Of course if you are strong enough to resist adopting the pup you foster. We successfully fostered two times and the third time we failed and we have a dog after our last one passed away 13 years ago. But of course we don't regret one minute of it. I just didn't think we were ever going to get another dog.

So sweet! Yes - I have fostered many, many dogs. At present not sure I can do another, and anyone who has fostered understands that without a back yard that is fenced, it is hard to responsibly take care of one if you are alone. (HOA means no fence.) I just got home from the doctor and have a broken bone in my foot, which means it is hard to take care of me.)

Because of my disabilities, I've trained this tiny baby to use puppy pads. I bring her outside for walks and enrichment, but she pottys on pads for my convenience. Nothing is worse than walking a dog outside on a migraine day. Ugh.

Yes! I have a friend who exclusively fosters elder dogs and dogs "with black on their tongues" (they used to be the first to go at kill shelters). I am a believer that the right dog finds us - not the right men, necessarily, but the right animals. To that end, I did send some feelers out before I went to the doc this morning regarding kitties.

Do not ask me about the time we thought it was a good idea to give Misty half a Xanax to calm her down so she would not jump on my toddler nephew, whose Thai mother thought Misty was trying to kill rather than kiss him. I would tell you I was an hour away with my 4-yo twins, and that my mom and I loved terriers more than each other and possibly our twins, and when she said the sedative seemed to make Misty more agitated, I told her to administer the other half. A hybrid pogo-poltergeist ensued. We were so happy when we got there.

The vet prescribed the medication and I suggested trying one-half a tablet first, rather than a whole one, because during the course of treating an epileptic foster Golden with Valium suppositories, one fact I learned was that dogs have a vastly greater tolerance to benzos and that they will not kill humans, let alone dogs. Unless you have spent a day or two putting suppositories in a dog, covered with shit, tears, maple syrup, and saliva, I suggest you keep your sanctimony to yourself.

Benzos CAN absolutely be fatal. I have multiple epileptic animals of my own. They're not fosters. They're mine. Two of them get three meds three times a day. One has an ativan script for long seizures. They came from the rescue I volunteered with for more than a decade. See I actually *have* spent a lot of that time caring for animal casualties of the misbegotten asininity of fools who thought it was a good idea to randomly treat their pets out of their medicine cabinets rather than take them to a proper vet. Such dipshittery not infrequently caused irreversible organ failure or outright death. I took plenty of these animals to ERs. I held too many as they died. I paid those bills out of my own pocket and I adopted seven medically complex cases myself. You sounded like one of the jackasses, having given no context in your comment other than "I thought it would be a good idea, and hoo hoo, it shore wasn't! haw! haw!" So You can shove my sanctimony up your ass. Come back for seconds and I'll insert them myself on the end of my boot.

It seems to me that you, with a few years under your belt, still have a lot left to give. I understand though that you are concerned about not being able to care for a dog when you get older. Can I suggest that you get a dog that, like you, has a few years under its belt? That way you have a companion, an older dog gets a home, and you don't have to worry about time running out anymore (well, not in that way at least).

My dad is 68 (he was a young'n when I was born), he just adopted a small dog from a local shelter after his previous doggy had been gone a couple of years. He got tired of being alone in the house. Best thing that he's done in quite a while. When he had emergency triple bypass surgery a couple of months ago he was so worried about her, but we took care of her while he was in the hospital and him getting home to her gave him something to look forward to and it helped him have something to focus on at home. You could become a foster for a local rescue, they're always needing fosters and you can still love on them until they find their forever home. I'm really sorry for the loss of your dog. Mine died a few years ago at the young age of 10 and I still miss that good boy every single day. I really miss his snuggles. He was the best couch snuggler while watching TV.

My sincerest condolences. We lost our 18 year old dog in 2019 and i told myself never again. I did enjoy the freedom from daily responsibility for a few years, but then in Jan 2025 we adopted two kitten brothers. They are my new heart :)

Me too, never made it without one for a week. It’s going to be 8 months in a week and it’s so incredible hard. But I don’t have the physical strenght or the health to do even simple things like cleaning dishes or take it out to walk and though my condition is not an illness but a genetic one, well, there’s also the worry of what if I die on them. So, no more dogs for me and sorry for the rant. It’s not a good day

Sorry to hear that. Our dog passed away a couple years ago and I got a new one within a week. Due to my age and a disability, along with a dogs life expectancy I knew I was at the last possible time to get a new dog. Little guy just turned 4 and while things are great I'm starting to look at later years. I've let my adult sons know they may need to take him in later on.

Thats so sad to hear, I don't trust anyone who doesn't like dogs including my mom. She have away our dog when I was 7 because the neighbors complained about his barking. He and I are incredibly attached to one another so if he had to move out he'd be devastated, but he also loves both sons who would bring him by for visits.

We went through that in 2021. It was heartbreaking to say the least. When I came home later that day and she didn’t run to me at the door, I dropped to the floor and bawled like a baby. She was suffering from seizures, couldn’t see well and we couldn’t handle watching her struggle and had to make a hard decision. Dogs are members of the family, I don’t care what anyone else thinks. Losing your best friend is painful. Sorry for your loss.

So sorry...I know what you're going though. :( I still have pets, but when my last house bunny died several years ago I opted to not adopt/rescue any more. Feeding them in New England winters was an expensive PITA and they didn't like the grocery store produce swill anyway since they were spoiled on my garden greens and field grass and clover from April through November. I've had pets since I was a kid and have lost so many over the decades so I long ago accepted death as a part of life with our short-lived companions. Doesn't make That Inevitable Day any easier though, no matter how many I've experienced.

I've had dogs for as long as I lived on my own and into marriage. I've loved them all more than I probably should, but I'm thinking this one might be the last. It's $300 every time I walk into the vet for anything. A 6 month supply of nexguard, the only flea control that works for us, is $250. The costs are becoming prohibitive. Pet insurance is mostly a scam (much like human insurance).

We lost our wonderful boy last month and that’s what I’m thinking. Vet bills are so high and unpredictable. I feel like we need to be rich to afford it. Also as my family ages I need to be able to travel more easily, and we never figured out a good way to deal with that. We had to put our boy down in May. It was awful and I said no more. My wife ( who is allegedly not an animal person) decided it was too quiet in the house and started campaigning for a new pup. I gave in and we now have a 4 month old lab pup. It took a bit for me to bond with him, but bond we did. And I am so glad. And now we’re talking about a sister for him.

I’m so sorry for your loss. I recently lost mine this summer and against my better judgement, got a puppy. I have realized this is probably the last puppy I’ll be able to do, I can barely keep up with this one. If I get 15 years out of him I’ll be a little past 60 when he passes, so it is very possible he is my last buddy. I feel your pain, my dog’s are my life!

Isn't that funny? I've been paying the mortgage for so long I hadn't actually even looked at how much more time was left on ours. Less than 2 years at almost nothing interest. No wonder we all get these annoying as hell calls and from the hedge fund people wanting to buy the house. Make sure to plan for funding what used to be escrowed, they don't hold your hand for that. Seriously, you no longer automatically pay your homeowners insurance and property taxes on a monthly plan, make sure it gets set up (or you set it up) so you don't have a drain.

I grew up going to Vegas. I know that sounds weird, but I was a super independent kid and my whole fam would go and I'd either wander and see what was what or hang out by the pool. Anyway, I've gone as an adult and WHO CAN AFFORD THIS?! Like, I make ok money but $20 for a drink is INSANE. And the food is all overpriced. And just...not good. For those prices the food should at least be good :( I remember Vegas being cheap and tacky...and wonderful. But now it's all just bananas expensive and not worth it IMO.

I line dry whenever it is above 60 degrees and not raining. Here that is about May to September. It takes me all day to wash, hang, and fold. I feel like an old lady at times doing this, even though I am a guy. The energy savings and the terrific smell are worth it.

I'm Australian and all my laundry is line-dried (don't own a dryer....neither does nearly everyone I know). Frontloading washing machine, a good shake then hang on the line to dry with sun and breeze, best feeling and smelling laundry by miles

I grew up with line dried everything and it made everything smell like sunshine, but it just seems like such a hassle now. Guess that’s why my mom had ME doing the line hanging and not her - it is a lot of work compared to a dryer!

I read about it on another sub as a way to keep towels fluffy. I just drape them over doors and furniture (along with the other shit I am too lazy to hang up - or in the bathrooms). It works, when I care enough to wash towels ( I have an ambitious pile of whites for bleaching that has been in the same place for a while now!).

Ha! You just reminded me of another “last”. No more white towels or sheets! I got so tired f having to do two smaller loads of laundry for each category that i just stopped buying anything white. Now it’s all colored tshirts, towels, sheets, etc. Always enough for a full load and no more bleach.

They are mostly holding up good, but the washcloths are getting a bit threadbare at this point and have been taken out of regular rotation. The towels will easily last another 5 years. They were made in the USA, and I doubt I could afford a similar quality set of towels today. I can pretty much tell you how many times they have been laundered (on average), I have 4 sets, and each set gets washed weekly. So they have been washed on the order of 300 times.

Hubs & I are 59 and 60. A few months ago, we decided to go rollerskating at the local rink. Neither of us had been skating in the 40 years we've been together, but we were both skilled as teenagers. It was awkward for us; so much skill had been lost, but we're glad we tried it. Since then, we've purchased quality skates and go regularly, only on adult night to avoid tripping over little kids. We're slowly rebuilding skill and having fun with it. We've each fallen hard and fallen soft, but are determined to keep at it. 🛼

I will only fly 1st class seating due to Spine disease and 5 prior surgeries. Arriving locked up and in shitty pain is so not worth it. Any international flights will always try to book on a Boeing 777 flight due to the fully recline pods seating up front. It makes those long flights nearly pain free for me. Flew to Aruba last yr from Inland Pacific NW and was pain free for pretty much the entire 10 days. I haven’t flown packed in with the sardines for nearly 10yrs and rarely travel with more than a day or 2 of pain meds anymore. Paying large expenses as much as possible with the venture card has helped keep flight expenses at a reasonable expense to afford that luxury for my spine and mental health. And have the wife seated up there with me. She hasn’t complained with my decision to stick with that rule.

Yes, live music, festivals, Mardi Gras. With the exception of The Cure. If they come back (not at a festival) I am there! Went to a dive bar on Halloween to see a cover band. Same old songs, people try to talk to you while the band is playing… done….over it. Had a hang over and didn’t even drink that much. Probably done dressing up for Halloween, too. Costumes get expensive and are uncomfortable. I have run out of ideas. Oh my gosh! I can’t believe I just said that! I used to looooove Halloween!

Yeah, and I’d like to do a cross county ride on an adventure bike, and that’s my goal after I retire in a few years. I think when I reach 70, at the very latest, it’ll be time to hang up my helmet. I’m sure it will be earlier than that. Another dream trip would be to travel to an Alaska, at least to Fairbanks, but up to Barrow possibly. I live in Oregon and starting from there is doable. Longer shots are Patagonia (Chile & Argentina), New Zealand and Australia.

Go to Disneyland. Last summer, my brother and his family were visiting for our mom’s 85th birthday, so we all (excluding mom) spent three days at Disneyland/California Adventure. At about 10:30pm on our last day, my husband and I were sitting on a bench waiting for everyone else to get off “it’s a small world” (I despise that ride) when it occurred to me that the sparkle is gone. I turned to my husband and said “I’m just taking it all in, because it just occurred to me that I have no interest in ever coming to Disneyland again.” Disneyland is so crowded now, it just isn’t fun anymore. I got no pushback from my husband; he grew up in Anaheim, and worked at the park as a teen so he was over Disneyland many years ago.

Paid for license plates/registration. Oregon has a permanent vehicle plate for disabled vets, which both my partner and I are (they require 40%+ disability rating, so you dont need to be 100%). We recently moved to Oregon and registered our vehicles and our veteran status allowed both our cars to be registered "one and done". Will save us a lot over the coming decades! Woot!

Rowing. Long time weightlifter with a few managed but chronic shoulder issues. I used to do intervals on my rower for conditioning regularly. Dragged the thing out and did some the other week and realized how much it triggered my shoulder issues plus I ended up with a migraine. Rowing just isn't worth the pain for me anymore. .

I learned an entirely new way to workout and move that is more forgiving and less injurious from GMB fitness (GMB.io). I’ve been following their workouts now for about 10 years. Oh I don't even know where to start. Working on my damn car. My whole life I have always maintained my own vehicles. I tried to crawl under my truck to look at something. Getting down was a bad mistake, because getting up was... challenging, yeah, let's call it that! I have never made enough money to afford a mechanic and I still don't, but I just don't want to mess with it. It's not the grease, it's the fact that it's all aluminum. If it was a cast iron anything, I wouldn't hesitate. Then there's love. Wife died a year and a half ago and I honestly think I would feel safer all alone. No one is going to play head games nor break my heart. I was tired of that 20 years ago when we first met. There's others but you have to remember that you are only as old as you decide you are. It's not as old as you feel because I have felt 80 for years. You can decide that you are too old for fun and wild parties and super hot sex with someone 30 years younger than you who in reality wouldn't give you the time of day. Or you can remember that age is just a number. Choose wisely

I think backwards break falls. I've been doing Japanese jujutsu for almost 20 years. It's brutal and painful. During warm ups we needed to do these backwards break falls. Essentially from standing, pretend someone shoved your shoulders hard and you fly down to the ground slapping to dissipate the energy. I needed to do 8, I did 1. Did it correctly, tucked in chin, double slap, but it just killed my back. I've already removed fighting from the knees, as they are shot. I'm slowly becoming the old wise man that teaches the techniques but has the younger guys demonstrate. I. Do. Not. Like. It.

I went to a Theory of a Deadman concert a couple years ago. Used to love going to concerts, and I was feeling old and washed up, so I drug my husband out and tried to make the most of it. It was fun, but I think I lost the last few hearing cells I had left. I've had a kid and a half since then but I'm hoping that someday I may be able to go to concerts again... Seeing as how I'm 45 it seems unlikely.

2 years ago I bought an e-bike. Wrecked it the first day. Still paying off the hospital bill. A year ago I bought an e scooter. Wrecked it 6 months later and cut my head open and gave myself a concussion and I consider myself lucky. Realized I'm too old for this crap and I need to keep my feet on the ground from now on. This is also why I moved away from ice and snow. My dad died from a fall and hitting his head in the wrong place.

Lay on the floor to get a dog toy out from underneath the sofa. I can get down on the floor and even lay down on the floor. It's getting back up that presents a problem. The arthritic knees and bad back don't like to cooperate. Next time I'll just move the sofa. It's lightweight -- the chances are slim that I'll throw out my back while moving it.

I can't pick up my grandchild anymore (she's almost 5 years old). Not in a sad "I'm broken" way, but more in the "why is this goblin so big now? Where did she get all this height!?" way. She's still a cuddle bug and her idea of fun is "hanging out with Gramsy" which is us sitting together under a blanket to watch whatever show/movie she is obsessed with right now. I just can't pick her up while I'm standing up anymore.

I had a similar one a couple of weeks ago...ever since he was not quite one our grandson has sat in my lap at my computer when he comes over and we watch Eric Carle videos on YouTube. We can't do it anymore because he's four now and so big his legs don't fit under the desk if he's on my lap. :(

On 11/7/25 I went to an Orlando Magic game because friend sent me his tickets due to a last second change. It was just blah to me and not memorable at all. Could have been my last NBA game. Much rather just enjoy my Bucs season tickets. Outdoor NFL much more enjoyable to me.

I had my roof done a couple of years ago and was going to get up and take a look around then realised I did not want to get up a ladder on the roof and risk breaking my neck. Other things, impulsive adventures or moves interstate etc are over. I’ve got medical issues to plan for if I go overseas for a month it all needs planning and doctors notes etc (I’m so old 😬😩). Anything that requires my knees to participate probably isn’t happening. No long hikes up mountains or sports.

I’m one of those weirdos who goes on and on in an annoying way about how much I deeply value all my travel experiences. Love water taxis. Will take tuktuks all day. Biking, boating, motorcycles, all fine. But transportation in India is just…my hard limit. I don’t know. Figuring out the subway in Chinese? No problem. Rush Hour Subway in Japanese city? No sweat. Train through a recent Yugoslav ceasefire? MAN that was stupid but I did it and survived. But those videos of 1300 people crammed on one Indian train for two days? *Scares* me. What was the worst and best of your experience? Were you ever scared? Did you go somewhere cool?

I did Eurail through Europe when i was young. Taking night trains to save on hostel fees and sleeping sitting up in 1950s style seats. It sucked but was also awesome - it broadened my horizons so much and made me appreciate home.
