I never once brought my own lunch. I always ate school lunch. For my full school career. Unless I ate lunch off campus, I ate school lunch.
I liked school lunch. It wasn't perfect, but it was food. I just had to scrounge money because my parents never bought me lunch tickets. I had to beg borrow and steal for lunch every day.
Seriously, my parents didn't bother to pay for lunch tickets so I had to find a way to hustle money to eat. My parent's weren't bad, they just didn't pay attention. They were busy working. That's kind of the GenX motto. "My parent's were busy."
KP-RNMSN@reddit
Isn’t that so wild!? My parents were “so busy”’as well. I wonder now what they were so busy doing, as all of the things I am busy with didn’t even exist back then!
RunRunRunRunFaster@reddit
Had paper bags .... lunchboxes were for rich people.
ReplyProfessional939@reddit
Funny, to us the rich people had paper bags. We were broke and couldn't afford to buy them all the time. But Mom would find lunchboxes at second-hand stores, or someone would give them to us, and they lasted pretty much forever. I went to school with the same KISS lunch box for several years. I remember it was dented all to hell and the picture was pretty much entirely worn off the thermos by the time it was replaced with a Dukes of Hazzard (which met the same fate...)

I had a metalJulia box (sixties TVshow where Diahan Carroll played a nurse), a metal Osmonds box and an orange textured plastic box. None of them ever made it to schook--my grade school is only four blocks from the house and I took my lunch in a paper bag in junior and senior high.
Come to think of it, I don't know what happened to any of those lunch boxes...

Snoopy. The first few lunchboxes I owned had the thermos with the silver glass inside to keep the drink cool. What were the manufacturers thinking? Of course, I would run near the classroom at some point, and toss the lunchbox against the wall where the others were, and the glass would shatter. For the rest of that school year, my drink would be milk bought from the cafeteria. 🤣

I loved those NFL team jackets from the 70s. Wish I could still buy them. They had the vinyl sleeves with the teams secondary color and the body of the jacket was felt like in the primary color. Logo on the front and name on the back. Every boy in my class had one of their favorite team. Lots of steelers, cowboys, raiders and dolphins back then.

Metal Strawberry Shortcake lunchbox for years. In 5th grade, I got a new one for the first time and it was a plain red pkastic one I could put stickers all over. Sadly, it wouldn't stay latched and the thermos leaked too, so I had to switch to brown bagging it. By 6th grade, I just bought hot lunch.

Komaisnotsalty@reddit
Grew up poor and schools in Northern Canada were these little buildings that were fucking freezing. We didn't have school lunch, so I would bring whatever I could scoop out of the house for lunch.
The last Friday of the month though? That was hotdog day and that was the Best Day Ever. I'd get a hotdog (or two - can't remember) and a chocolate milk and one of those little ice creams with a wood paddle for a spoon for about .50 cents. The hotdogs were hot, the chocolate milk ice cold, and the ice cream perfect.
It was breakfast & lunch all in one.

I had a raised metal Care Bears lunchbox with matching thermos. In 2nd grade, one friend had a Strawberry Shortcake lunchbox, and one friend had a My Little Pony lunchbox. We would pretend that our lunchboxes were TVs, and we would make up plotlines for whichever TV show we were "watching" that day. Late in the year, a new girl joined our school and our lunch table, and she had a generic fabric lunchbox that said "snack time". She decided that her lunchbox would be the commercials in between shows 🤣🤣

I tried to paint it but because I was a stupid kid, I just found some paint in the garage and did it. That paint never really dried for some reason and it stunk.

The beauty of the plain paper bag was that any sandwich would get flattened to a pulp because there was nothing to protect it. Nothing better tasting than a crushed peanut butter and jelly sandwich or a salami and cheese sandwich crushed beyond belief.

Does anyone remember the Tupperware lunch boxes? They came in brown and "poppy" which was an orange. I had a brown one. It was my fave color in the 70s. I got mine around 2nd grade. A site listed the release date as 1974 which seems to line-up. It had a thermos with it, but the top broke almost right away. I only took the lunch box to school a few times since I normally ate school lunch. For a while I used it store smaller toys, but then it got sold on a garage sale several years later.

I had so many of them. We moved a LOT so pretty much every school year was in a new school with my previous stuff tossed out, given away, sold, whatever.
So the lunchkit list is longer than it should be. I'm sure there's some I'm forgetting, but what I remember for sure is Happy Days, Dukes of Hazard, Holly Hobby, and at least 2 or 3 different varieties of Snoopy and/or Peanuts. I think I had a '60s kinda gingham patchwork quilt sorta pattern on a metal one in the early days too.
I was notorious for losing my lunchbox or leaving it at school for months on end, so while I had a bunch of lunch kits, I more often than not just had a brown paper bag.
I usually made my lunch myself past age 9 anyway - my parents were not around too often, so my lunches were sketchy sandwiches (like Cheeze Whiz & Miracle Whip (which I still eat sometimes, tyvm!)), though on really really good days, I'd have a bigger brown bag and I knew that was an awesome day because it meant my mom took the time to make hot soup for me, and I'd have something nice & warm for lunch in winter.
