Why do new cars get so much hate?

This is my boomer hill to die on. Too much shit to break, too much plastic, too reliant on computers, and they all look the same. I miss my '93 silverado. It was a piece of shit but it never broke down lol

My girlfriend can not drive with automatic transmission, please help me convince her she can?!

I switch almost daily because my daily is a manual and my work vehicle is an auto. I've never made a mistake that was detrimental to the car. Maybe went for a button that wasn't there but that's it lol

If you were shopping with a lowest cost of ownership in mind, what would you get?

Posted by jules083@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 127 comments

ThatOneSnakeGuy@reddit

Probably an s10 for me, my 93 Silverado was a tank but also my trans was basically a bag of gravel with asome linkage in there That said I barely had to work on anything and if I did it was easy to get to and parts weren't bad.

My niece just bought my wife's car, and I went to pull the plates, and the screws will not move. I put PB Blast on them, I've tried screw divers and vice grips. Do I have to drill these out?

You may have luck with an extractor bit! I have a small set of those. The only other thing I could think of is using a Dremel to cut a groove and getting a big ass flathead on there lol

How hard is it to learn manual?

Posted by Previous-Mechanic914@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 246 comments

ThatOneSnakeGuy@reddit

Not hard. Understand why you're doing what you're doing and it's just repetition after that. I learned on a Toyota tercel then a 5 speed civic, both were very easy transmissions. The car I have now has a Subaru gearbox which is a little weirder bc the gearing is different and so is the bite point (where the clutch engages with the engine). There are tons of YouTube videos but the best way is to get a beater and start throwing gears. You're going to grind them, and stall the car, but it's ok. Just don't money shift, there's a reason it's called that. Money shifting is when you're rowing through gears and you accidentally downshift instead of upshifting, this usually happens in 2nd->1st instead of 2nd->4th and grenades the transmission. You can stop it if you push the clutch in before you actually let it engage. That sounds scary typed out but just go slow and watch videos and you will be fine 😂

Hello! I am a 33 y/o dude and I was in your position when I was 18, I was pretty far away and this site didn't exist, forums were popping up but that is neither here nor there. Point is, YouTube will save your life. Chrisfix is a highly recommended one. I also recommend car mechanic simulator the game. It won't tell you nearly all there is to know about it, but it will help you to understand the main parts of a car/engine. I kind of had to YouTube/Google stuff and fix it as it broke bc I was too poor to bring it to someone. Keep up on maintenance and buy a Haynes manual for your car, it will give you helpful info. Lastly, whenever I have a problem now, I Google first. For example, "2000 Toyota Avalon gas smell running poorly" and almost instantly, a forum popped up discussing there being an issue with the evap system on that year. That has been my experience I would say 8/10 times, and the remainder could be worked through. Be safe, watch videos first and feel confident in doing it before you start, you'll be fine. Maybe watch a general safety video first lmao

Posted by Ok_Cranberry_9075@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 26 comments

ThatOneSnakeGuy@reddit

New intake air and cabin air filters, new spark plugs, I'd do an oil change just to be safe. Probably don't need to worry about transmission fluid. Stay on top of oil changes, and do t go nuts before it's warmed up 30 seconds to a minute for fluid to be moving throughout engine, then slow driving (under 4k rpms) until the engine is heated up which is probably like five mins of driving.

Oil filter?

Posted by Cloudyyy0_0@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 36 comments

ThatOneSnakeGuy@reddit

Oh okay gotcha. I've also heard that, but it can be done with some socket extensions and willpower/elbow grease. That said, if I get a $400 quote it may be enough to say fuck it and let them do it lol

I literally learned because I had to and then fell in love with cars. Didn't have a ton of money so had to fix my old cars then would sell and buy other shit... I am not above youtubing a goddamn thing my man. Keep watching videos, go get someone's broken lawnmower and take the motor apart. Join groups and talk with other people who like to work on or discuss cars.

After i watched few reels with japan gtrs which could easily drive 400-450km/h, seems that no girl will be with you if you don't have such car, is it so?

What are car guy thoughts on the belief that early 2000s Toyotas are somehow “better” than current models?

Posted by NewMexicoJoe@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 245 comments

ThatOneSnakeGuy@reddit

I think simply put, they had a great design and as everyone progressed with computers and other shit they didn't need it started opening up new ways to have issues. That and the fact that they changed some motor stuff and now everyone's complaining about their Tacoma's and tundras needing new engines, that shits crazy. That said, I have a 2019 gt86 and I've had no problems so far (knock on wood and yes I know it's a toyobaru).

What’s one thing smart drivers do that shows they’ve been driving for years, and one mistake that shows someone is new on the road?

Posted by Purple_Winner5411@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 680 comments

ThatOneSnakeGuy@reddit

Anticipation of traffic, goes both ways. I'm usually looking way down the road but you'll see a lot of people riding ass going 65+ then act all "wHaT a TrAgIc uNaVoIdAbLe AcCiDeNt" when they inevitably crash. Generally speaking, you can leave enough space to see brakes in front and coast almost all the way to your stop instead of wasting your brakes and gas.

Car ideas for first car?

I mean unless you're loaded I would stay away from anything German. *When* you hit a curb and bust up the suspension, it will be expensive. I'm partial to Honda's but I drive a '19 Toyota 86 TRD se right now. These cars are great but you have to watch out for a few things on them so careful around boxer engines if you don't know much about cars

Is it okay to go to higher speeds and gears before the car warms up while keeping rpm low?

Posted by UnitedMetalheads@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 60 comments

ThatOneSnakeGuy@reddit

I know for my car (2.0 boxer) it is recommended to keep the rpms under 4k while the car warms up. Going a higher speed at a lower rpm would be okay, you just don't want to ask the engine to turn at high speeds before everything is "primed" or you'll cause damage. I'm sure the design of my motor makes this more prominent, but the principle stands

With a sawzall and a 1998 Chevrolet blazer Seriously though, look up ads for broken down cars for sale and find something for a couple hundred bucks and try and fix it, never work on your daily for fun that's a hard mistake to learn.. if it breaks it breaks, no harm no foul.

Know a lot about Human Resources and NOTHING about cars. What could be wrong with my van after accidentally putting diesel in it?

Posted by 406MaMaJo@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 44 comments

ThatOneSnakeGuy@reddit

Yeah that should've just been a drain your fuel and clean everything type deal, not $3k and wouldn't really have damaged anything. If you put gas in a diesel it'd be fucked but $3k is wild.

I would not take a pt cruiser if someone offered it to me & paid me $700 on top of that. They have a plethora of issues and I've known two people personally who've owned them and they were aggravating money dumps the whole time.

Posted by Big_Pog11@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 56 comments

ThatOneSnakeGuy@reddit

Yup. They break constantly and parts are not cheap, if you can find stuff, im not even gonna ask model. Get a civic or a Camry and call it a day, save for a car you really want. I abused the everloving shit out of my seventh gen civic and that car never let me down

Any tips for new drivers?

Posted by Mindless-Craft-5511@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 30 comments

ThatOneSnakeGuy@reddit

When you go to leave, it doesn't need to warm up for ten mins. Sit in there, crank it up, and after like one minute you're good to drive, just keep it under 4k rpms until it's warmed up fully. Like the other commenter said, stay on top of your oil level, I check mine every few weeks. It also seems to want to be revved higher than other cars I've driven with manual transmissions, I usually shift around 4-5k as opposed to around 3.5

Memories! To some people a car is a tool to get to and from places. For others it's sentimental and our own little space. It's a real bummer when a car that worked for you for years finally becomes too much trouble for the money. I will never stop missing my '93 Silverado :/

Scratched someone’s car today and they told me not to worry and we both left. What now?

Nope that's that. No insurance company would take them seriously over a scratch anyway, seems like they just let you off the hook since they didn't care that much.

Can someone help me get a good base understanding of how cars work?

Posted by societies_worstak@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 71 comments

ThatOneSnakeGuy@reddit

YouTube. There are loads of videos on how engines work and which cars do what and were made when with whichever specs etc. Donut is a good place to start, but watch the older videos with James and Zach and Nolan and Jerry. Those are beginner friendly because they discuss a lot about the cars and don't start with complicated shit like manuals on diesel electronic fuel injection systems.
