What makes a car guy a car guy?

I've got a friend in his mid 30's who I feel likes the idea of cool cars more so than actually owning a cool car. Professes how he'll one day own this enthusiast car or that one. Cool is subjective of course. His opinions are mainly derived from anime cars, Initial D or whatever. He has no actual experience driving or working on cars, or enthusiast car ownership. He drives a camry. He's well off enough he could buy a new C8 and not blink. Spends dumb money on magic cards and shit like that. He sends me car memes all the time - and I all I can think of, is, bro you can't relate to this, you haven't had this experience or anything like it. Idk it's kind of weird to have him comment on things like the finer points of how I did the welding repair on the rockers of my 90's shitbox when he's never left the armchair he speaks from. Maybe I'm gatekeeping or some shit. I haven't expressed to him that I don't consider him a car guy, and that he likes the idea of cars, and not actually cars. What makes a car guy a car guy?
