Bullied in High School?

Youngest in my class with an unusual, not WASPy name which really sucked before HS. Didn’t really have a click. Was nerdy, sporty, and took shop class. Wasn’t ok physically until I hit my growth spurt and started lifting weights. The verbal never stopped though. Apparently I handled it well because running decades later found out that a decent number of people thought I was pretty ok.

Do you want any of your parents' stuff? If so, what is it and why? If not, why?

Not much. There is some stickley furniture but that’s it. My biggest hope is to not see something sold at the estate sale for $50 a few years later on Antiques roadshow that’s worth $500,000.

In my area it totally screws up traffic on main roads in a significant number of areas. 15 years ago I was chatting with a principal about it and she said that even back then they begged parents to let their kids ride the bus. It’s even worse now and it significantly impacts other people in the community.

Sadly I feel like it’s going backwards since it’s kinda like what I used to have to do. Plus takes up seat space or is crammed in center console.

Married Gen-x do you wear your wedding ring?

Posted by in-a-microbus@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 3167 comments

TMQ73@reddit

After a couple of work inquiries I put on enough weight that I couldn’t comfortably wear my wedding band. After a few months I found a nice fitting stainless steel replacement that was like $10. With the price of gold being what it is I am kinda glad not to worry about losing or damaging it. So yes I wear a ring just not the one from my actual marriage.

GenX peeps. You're going to a concert for a band you love. Do you wear that band's t-shirt to the concert?

Posted by bigpilague@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 1173 comments

TMQ73@reddit

Why is it Ok to wear a multi or billionaires merch but not some way lesser known band. At least the latter might see it and appreciate your support. And yeah I got a thumbs up from the lead singer after he pointed out my shirt from years back.

Am I just getting old or has the world really become more selfish?

Some I stopped calling and setting things up with since I was the only one calling. Some moved away. Some cheated on their spouses. A few went nucking futs during COVID. While I love my wife and family I miss having real friendships.

Realistically, Garbage played at a bar in “Waterside” in Norfolk VA just as they were blowing up. Buddy went and only told me after the fact. I totally would have gone.

Mom had a stroke a few years ago and is mobility impaired. Their house is four additions and is not easy for someone to get around in or maintain yet mom refuses to consider moving. Dad and try to keep it together/clean but it’s slowly falling apart and it’s a toss up which of the three of the house will kill first. Sadly my hope is mom as dad would put it on the market in a second hopefully while it’s still worth more than the land it sits on.

Satanic Panic!

TMQ73@reddit

“Heavy metal is the devil” Nothing like Metallica to keep you motivated when the Cross Country coach wanted you to do a long run. The result was I was in much better shape than allot of the church kids. The irony is that a couple years back my daughter was playing varsity game at the Catholic HS and they played Enter Sandman at the break of the Lacrosse game. “Dungeons and Dragons is satanic” well I learned allot of vocabulary that I kicked butt in English class and my SAT. Bible has some good vocab probably were comparable to the few that that actually read the non dumbed bible down versions.

Don’t forget improves vocabulary. I learned so many words that I would probably have never been exposed to that I did really well in English and on SAT. As a young 9th grader I maxed out a vocabulary test that was “equivalent” to a 35year old.

Did anyone else just never grow up?

Seriously! I’m a dude who does the overwhelming majority of grocery shopping, cooking, cleaning, laundry, and gardening. I also do the traditional man stuff like home improvement and take care of the cars. But yes I still have an old gaming system, skateboards, surfboards as I want to cling to some semblance of youth and have a few kernels of joy.

I miss having a CD player in my car

Posted by RSVPno@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 130 comments

TMQ73@reddit

One of the reasons we got a 23 Forester instead of a 24 Crosstrek was that it had a CD player and more physical controls. Our 2013 and 2020 cars also have CD players. I didn’t have an actual in dash CD player in MY car until I put an aftermarket one in my 97 around 08-09 so I’m in no hurry to move on.

I Wouk go so further and say that silent Gen/Boomers have an attachment since they lived it. Specifically, I have never seen my dad laugh/smile so much at a movie. He grew up in Michigan in the 40s/50s.

God Rest ye Merry Gentleman is probably my favorite Christmas song. Remember them playing it live in 97 on the old TNN at an Exs parents house and was loving it. The parents were like who?

I have been trying to get rid of stuff aka purge. I keep telling people I don’t want anything for Christmas but it seems even being blunt “l don’t want anymore $hit” does not seem to stick. I am so busy at work I just but have to use or lose PTO. I worked a full day on a Sunday/Today to get ahead of loose ends. I am salary so my only benefit is that I hope to avoid the inevitable “what do you mean it’s not going to get done before next year”. Blew my knee out at work and with two months of PT I didn’t go surfing for the first time in 20+ years. Wife and youngest are probably going to to be gone right after Christmas so it will just be me and oldest who did OK but not great at community college this year. Parents are alive but not doing great health wise. Every phone call I get my first thought is Oh crap something happened. The saying in the 90s was “life sucks then you die”. I laughed it off back then but now I’m kinda jaded.

Yup give me khakis any day of the week. Jeans are for when I’m in the woods going through greenbrier and blackberry vines that are even worse for thorns.

Been lucky enough to see Toad the Wet Sprocket, Gin Blossoms, Cracker, and The Connells in the past few years and all were good. Just saw triple bill of Sponge, Local H, and Everclear. Seeing Sponge play Plowed was a bucket list item. Everclear wasn’t great. Holy hell Local H who I had never seen before kicked ass and I am sorry I had not seen them previously. Would have liked to see the Wallflowers which was free but it was too damn hot and a Wednesday night (yeah we are old).
