How are you bored of the same songs on a flash drive but you wouldn’t be bored with CD? You can put 1000s of albums on a flash drive but realistically you might have a few dozen CDs in your car at most.

BTW.. You dont "own" that music... a cd is essentially a license to listen. Just read the disc.. probably says it right in the liner notes. Thats why if your cd get scratched you have buy another. Stay limited to your "collection" but you are missing out on tons of great new bands. And if a band sucks... just skip them. No buyers remorse for spend on crappie music.

What I would be missing out if I only listen to streaming music would be the extensive collection of interesting local and underground bands that I've collected through the years that aren't available on streaming. That's the entire point here.

Yeah I understand that you can rotate through which CDs you keep in your car, but once you're putting in the effort to do that you might as well put every CD you own on a drive, plus whatever you want to download, and not have to worry about it.

Why? 10 seconds I select a cd and walk to my car. Ripping? However long that takes (usually a couple of minutes to rip, a bit to transfer). Waste of time when I can just grab what I want and go. Especially since I've got over 4000 cds

I have A LOT of CDs. When I went through the uploading of CDs to mp3 phase, I didn't rip every song. So my digital library is mostly hits. Today I heard "Brain Stew" on the radio and that got me nostalgic for Green Day and thinking that somewhere in the basement is "Dookie" and how much I used to love listening to that album front to back in its entirety. Enjoying a whole album like Beasties "Check Your Head" or NIN "Pretty Hate Machine" like we used to. And enjoying those hidden gem songs that you liked but weren't popular. I know you can do that on streaming services or usb but i just found myself wishing i had the old mini case laying in the passenger seat today.

If you really miss the fidelity of CD audio compared to MP3, you can use uncompressed audio formats. The CD is already digital, so you get zero loss, and even with the larger file size you can fit the equivalent of dozens of CDs onto a cheap flash drive, and many hundreds if you want to pay a little more.

Protip: a car's CD player likely has MP3 playback capability. So if you burn a CD with MP3s as a data disc, rather than an audio disc, you can fit over 100 songs on there.

All of my music is on my iPhone. All of it. all my old CDs, and all the new stuff I've found over the years. The only issue I have is that bouncing between two cars, the bluetooth in my car goofs up my iPhone and having my phone on 'shuffle' it will restart about every third time I get in my car. So, I listen to my music alphabetically. That way, when it messes up, I just go back to the song I was just listening to and continue. I hear every song in my catalog.

I have a free Pandora account. Had it since they launched (20+yrs?). Yes it has ads, but it's one 15 to 30 second ad per 5 songs. Way better than commercial radio. And I like that Pandora feels more like old school radio, you don't pick a specific song or album, unlike Spotify.

I think I would be devastated if something happened to my Spotify. I spent so many years making playlists and walk into my house and Yo Alexa play my Superhot 90's rap and metal mix, or my Superhot PG mix for when my kids are in the car, or my Superhot Driving Mix . I literally cultivated a playlist for every possible scenario in my life and have 10s of thousands of songs that I like. I could probably go years without hearing a duplicate if I really wanted to. Question. Did you really miss out on ripping CDs and loading them onto a much larger media like flash drives ? You said you get bored by a flash drive? A CD holds no more than 750 megabytes while a flash drives can now go up to like 1 Terrabytes! That's 1,000, 000 megabytes! Even a budget flash drive can hold like 16 Gigs and they go for like $10 on amazon! That means with a $10 - 16GB flash drive, you can essentially have 16 CD's worth of music on that one flash drive! And that's only if the CD is used as a data disk, othewise music CDs used to have like 16-20 songs at max. The question is do you have enough songs to even fill it? If you don't, CDs aint gonna help you, unless you have your CDs, which you could rip with a CD burner to your computer and copy over to that flash drive.

Just keep music on your phone and CarPlay it or android auto it. I turned all my cds into mp3s in the early 2000s and have purchased every song that I want since then. My phone has 54 GB of just music. Playlists for every genre. I put my CDs into storage when I moved into my first home in 2004 and they have not come out of those rubbermaids since then. I moved again in 2010’and they live in my mechanical room storage closet. I probably still have half a dozen 12-disc cartridges from my old car audio cd changer. Those discs were the original home of my mp3 collection. I had (6 cartridges x 12 disks each) 72 disks of just mp3s at all times in my car. That’s approximately 7200 songs

One of the reasons we got a 23 Forester instead of a 24 Crosstrek was that it had a CD player and more physical controls. Our 2013 and 2020 cars also have CD players. I didn’t have an actual in dash CD player in MY car until I put an aftermarket one in my 97 around 08-09 so I’m in no hurry to move on.

I've also been buying digital music off Bandcamp. I have a Spotify family plan for the missus and kids but uninstalled it about 6 months ago once my collection got big enough. I don't miss it. I rip the CDs and put them on my phone. Funny thing is that these past couple of years between CDs and Bandcamp my music listening and discovery has been so much more enjoyable. I'm a young GenX (1979) and CDs have been so nostalgic for me. For Christmas I got given a pre order for Kula Shaker's new album. Comes out end of the month and includes a t shirt, bonus CD, signed CD, and signed postcard. Can't wait!

My car has one and I love it. Yes, I'm familiar with streaming, but album listening is fantastic and a completely different experience via CD (or cassette). No, it's not a mess, I keep a small 16-CD wallet in the car and rotate discs in and out. Sound quality is outstanding. I must be honest here, I love driving it. It is so choice. If you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up.

I still have my old iPod. Bonus, it’s easy to mod them and put more storage and an extra battery in them, and most cars still have the iPod controls and stuff in the stereo, even the newer ones. I’ve got over 20k songs, I plug it in and hit shuffle and I’m my own radio station that never repeats, never has a commercial, and always plays music I like. I love Spotify and pandora for discovering new music, but I also love my iPod, and it loves me. So that’s an option that’s better than cd’s.

I loved it to. But I swear they play the exact same songs in blocks. For example, if you have 80s Hair Metal or Ozzy's Boneyard or Petty - there are hundreds if not thousands of songs that can be played. So to hear the same ones over and over and over and not even be the popular ones, what's the point? (Bullet Boys Smooth Up In Ya - I despise that song and never heard it once in the 80s but they play it on the hour on Hair Metal. ) I love when they do the free Thanksgiving and Memorial weekends. I’m battling this now. Been trying various streaming but just not into it. I have a large CD collection and like grabbing a handful of CDs before heading out based on my mood at the time. I search through what I have & pick them. With streaming I have to brainstorm bands/singers and rarely come up with ideas…that’s just me, I get it. I’m cool with a simple portable plug in but everything I see on Amazon looks cheap. I already sent one back because it never produced sound and wouldn’t pair up for more than 5-10 seconds (wth?). So I’m stuck on CDs…I like what I like. Wish I could enjoy streaming but I’m not inventive enough to make my own playlist on the fly. I have to see something physical and choose from that. Grandpa-ish I know…m’eh.

My 2021 Crosstrek has one, but I have only used it a couple of times. I like that it’s there, but I was always horrible about CD’s in the car. I would end up with a collection of CD’s, none of which had the right CD in the right case because I was always changing CD’s while I drove, and wouldn’t put the CD back in its original case. Always with the idea of “I’ll fix it later.” But, of course, I wouldn’t.

When I got my car in 2017(!) I insisted on it having a CD player due to my huge collection. My prior car had a CD changer! Well, I've used it maybe twice in 8 years! "Hey siri, play XX on Spotify" is much easier! ;-) $12 per month is more than worth it. Back in 1987 when I was a kid, I'd routinely shell out $15 for a CD (about $43 today). I have nostalgia for CDs but that's about it.

My 2019 Crosstrek has a cd player. But I love the hell out of CarPlay, use it with Bandcamp and quboz as well as our local files on phones. We get the Current over the air here and that’s also a decent station (I believe you that commercial radio is repetitive and full of commercials, but avoid that garbage) That said, I kinda miss my CD collection, ripped and ditched over a 1000 of em in 2011.

It's not so much that I miss having a CD player in my car because I love technology and how far we have come. With that said, I miss the art of buying the CD. Especially when Madonna would put out a new album. Waiting for the release date and figuring out what paycheck will cover the cost. The excitement of looking at the art, etc, that would be in the CD case. Blasting the new songs in my car as I drove the long way home. And going ot a video release party and "illegally" taping the video premiere. Good times. These days, I'll stick to my cheap Amazon music subscription lol.

You must be using a small USB drive, 32 gb and I've got like 2200 songs playing on random. Occasionally get repeats but I guess it depends on how much you're in the car. If you're technical maybe look at adding your music to plex media server on a home computer and PlexAmp on a phone to play back... That gives me 22,000+ songs
