I don’t know if it is you or lots of people on Reddit feel this way, but I talked with another Redditor recently about this. I think this is such a good idea. Obviously lots is planning involved, but it seems so useful and less wasteful!

Did you actually sneak out as teenagers?

As an outsider, the American concept of having a motorized "garbage disposal" inside your kitchen sink is fascinating. Is this standard in every home, and isn't it incredibly dangerous?

Snuggly_Chopin@reddit

My son couldn’t skip when he was little. It was part of a test to see if he could get in to Head Start. Apparently it’s a motor skill issue. He flunked that, and he couldn’t finish the tests with all the kid’s around because he got overwhelmed.

What is a good American dessert to share with my non American co-workers?

Apple pie is also pretty British. The Brits also refer to things as, ‘British as Apple pie’. I think a pumpkin or pecan pie is more accurately American. The chocolate chip cookies and brownies work well!

I live in a rural county is Washington, but luckily I get to say “I live in the gorge”, because everyone would be more likely to know that than my county’s name. I do have to specify it’s near the west end, though.

There is another story here, though. I’m in the doing all right category, but my parents were terrible with money and we didn’t have any savings. We ate brand name cereal because my mom would never have bothered to look for a deal even though we really should have.

Why are there distinctly Southern names, but not really for any other region of the United States?

Worst Disney movie?

I loved The Black Cauldron, but I was a weird child who enjoyed horror and dark fantasy. I agree with the rest of the 80’s. My grandma took me to the re-releases of the classics during that time, or I watched them on The Wonderful World of Disney. I do believe I watched Oliver & Company and liked it, but as an adult it doesn’t hold up like the classics do, so I chalk that up to childishness.

Reddit isn’t letting my reply to OP’s reply to me, but thank you for explaining this. I am ignorant of most of the French language. I was making a terrible dad joke and I didn’t mean any offense whatsoever. I thank you for the clarification because that’s what I understood it to mean in English.

Johnny Got His Gun was incredibly memorable for me as well. We also watched the movie and I kept thinking how weird it was watching the one particular scene with the nurse along with all my classmates.

What characteristically 'Old man/Old lady' items or strategies did you scoff at in your youth but fully embrace now?

Posted by canadasecond@reddit | Xennials | View on Reddit | 687 comments

Snuggly_Chopin@reddit

My issue isn’t a specific item or ritual. I have always been overweight and I never wore tank tops once I was in middle school. I didn’t start wearing them more regularly until my late thirties. Now that I’m in perimenopause I am hot all the time and I wear things now that I couldn’t have imagined wearing when I was young. I never looked at older, overweight women and scoffed or made fun of them, but if I saw them I subconsciously thought they ‘shouldn’t’ be wearing that. I grew up with a mom always on a diet and learns to hate my fat at a very early age. I find myself amazed that now I don’t care about that shit and for the first time in my life I look at my body and think I look good! The younger me never would have guessed that older me would rock tank tops and sundresses like the old ladies I saw and actually feel so pretty.

And what do we do if someone comes to the door?

Posted by Bradtothebone79@reddit | Xennials | View on Reddit | 211 comments

Snuggly_Chopin@reddit

It’s actually kind of a problem. We had some JW’s who were very nice people and I went to school with their son, but I don’t want to stand and talk at the door for 15 minutes when (at the time) I had little kids and stuff to do! They were super nice and I hate confrontation, so I started hiding when they came. We have a long driveway and you can usually get out of the room easily once they’re spotted. Unfortunately I taught my son that if I got out of a chair quickly it meant we had to hide. One day I was just adjusting my seated position a little too quickly and my son shot in the air, threw his iPad and booked it down the hall. I had to talk to my kids about anxiety and that the people weren’t actually scary. I was humbled that day.

And what do we do if someone comes to the door?

Father Knows Best, The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, I love Lucy, The Flintstones, Green Acres, Andy Griffith. I watched them mostly in the 80’s as I’m from ‘78, but yes, I do feel like I had a little look into what my mother watched as a child. I’ve had my kids watch Lucy and Dick Van Dyke. I adore The George Burns and Gracie Allen show. My much younger British husband even enjoys it. We haven’t watched these in a while. Thanks for the reminder!

When I was little, long before those movies came out, I used to be scared of those trucks because they looked like nothing was holding the logs in. I didn’t son a ton of time with my dad growing up, but he drove log trucks (that’s what everyone called them in the small towns we lived in) and he told me the weight of each log and they way they are stacked makes it quite safe unless the truck is in a disastrous wreck, which would be unsafe for everyone in the situation anyhow. It quelled my fears and when I finally saw that scene I was felt a little smug with my insider knowledge.

I think I could probably call on 2, but I never see them. My family life dynamic is really…weird, just through circumstances out of my control and I don’t ever see anyone but my nuclear family and my mom who lives on the same property. I have such a hard time making plans with friends because I feel like I have no time or money. It sucks.

Something is wrong with me because I loved scary movies as a kid. It’s the jump scares and kid noises that get me now. I took my kid to the second Five Nights at Freddy’s movie and I covered my ears most of the time, waiting for the horrible noise I knew was coming.

The most latch key you remember

Snuggly_Chopin@reddit

I guess I became a latchkey kid at 9, but my aunt told me a story about a particular NYE when I was 8. My mom and step-dad had gotten a room at a hotel about a half hour away that had a big party. I was supposed to stay with my grandma, but there was a terrible snow storm and my parents decided I needed to stay home and tend to the fire so the dogs wouldn’t get cold. Grandma was an hour in the other direction and it would have been a treacherous drive for her. My aunt and her boyfriend decided that wasn’t cool and called off their plans to instead come stay with me. I had a friend over and we all partied and I never knew any different. I had been left alone here and there before, but my step-grandmother lived on the same property and I knew I could go there. I’m not sure why SHE couldn’t take care of the dog’s, but there you go.

For a few years I kept aging myself up a year for some reason. I finally got if figured out, but I really am turning 48 this year and I really wish I was still getting my age wrong because it would be such a relief to know I was actually 46 instead of 47 right now, lol.
