What characteristically 'Old man/Old lady' items or strategies did you scoff at in your youth but fully embrace now?

I'm talking gold bond medicated powder, granny carts at the grocery store at 8am, knee high dress socks, plain oatmeal every morning, etc.

Getting ten pairs of readers at dollar tree and just scattering them across my house.
creamywhitemayo@reddit
Between my husband and I, we have so many dollar store readers tucked all over the house and car. And somehow, we still end up in a situation where we don't have a single pair between us while out and aboutđ
PomeloPepper@reddit
You can get multi packs on Amazon pretty cheap too.
Enge712@reddit
I used to make fun of my dad fo this. Now I buy 6 packs of readers
Caftancatfan@reddit
The first time you try to put on glasses while youâre already wearing glasses is a real rite-of-passage moment.
PomeloPepper@reddit
Or doing the head, neckline, pocket pat down to find your readers.
artfully_dejected@reddit
I put sunglasses on over my âregularâ glasses. Had to see someone else do it to go âoh! I can do that?â

I found a pair of sunglasses thatâs designed to fit over regular glasses. $13 and changed my life.

For about 3 years I kept thinking I needed more light when reading. Then it out readers on and was shocked. My eyesight used to be incredible.
rotorocker@reddit
I asked my parents what it felt like when they first started needing them so I would know signs to look for, but they couldn't remember lol.
snail13@reddit
Iâm not sure our parents experienced the transition to needing readers the same way we do now because they didnât stare at some sort of screen for 16 hours a day.
I realized my vision was changing when I had to increase the fonts on my phone and how my eyes were getting fatigued because I am on a computer all day.
rotorocker@reddit
I turn 42 this year and have been using computers since I was 4 in 1988. I had lasik for near sightedness in 2011 (distance) but I haven't knock on wood noticed anything yet. I believe there is also newer lasik style surgery for far-sightedness. I hope that it's gotten good by the time I get there. I don't want reading glasses. I fucking hated wearing mine when I did when I was younger and Lasik was the best money I ever spent. I'm also a car enthusiast so that factors into my feelings. I need to have perfect periphery vision for racing.
Righteouslimpet@reddit
My old lady moment was getting my first pair of progressives. Had perfect vision until I hit 35, and itâs been downhill since then.
SlackerDS5@reddit
I do that with sunglasses. I can still look cool while being able to read my phone. I got tired of having to switch glasses just to read.
sugarturtle88@reddit

Holding something far away so you can read it
CastleRockstar17@reddit
I think the day I turned 40, I started holding things far away from my eyes to read them.. such an, "oh shit I'm turning into my mom" moment
xXWestinghouseXx@reddit
My eye doctor calls it "tromboning" when you're moving it back and forth to get the right view. At this point you should be wearing prescription glasses and/or moving up to bifocals or even trifocals.
illbringthedip@reddit

AssociateRemarkable6@reddit
Yes!!!! I hate that. I have two pair of glasses. Ones for reading and ones for driving because I didn't want bifocals. đ©âđŠł
travelingslo@reddit
I just got progressives because the eye doctor and the optometrist glasses person insisted it was the only way. Theyâre awful. My eyes burn in minutes of putting them on. I donât wear them and I need to go back and ask for two single focus pairs like youâve got. Smart move.
tlivingd@reddit
Uggg my optometrist has been fighting me on this but since my subscription hasnât changed I still have them. However. Discovered my lenses are too far from my eyes so adjusting the eye pads wider to get the lenses closer helped with the progressives
ominous_squirrel@reddit
Metamucil. But itâs gross as a beverage. I add it to my morning oatmeal
Treadingresin@reddit
Ok so look, going to the grocery store early or in the middle of a weekday means that there are no kids throwing temper tantrums or getting in the way of your cart. There will not be much if any line at check out. And I am dealing with real grocery shoppers, the people that know the items and what side of the isle to walk down. I don't have to ask some random guy to please move so I can grab the olive oil I want while he waits for his wife to pick up the phone and tell him which brand to get.
The same thing applies for the big Farmer's Markets. Those of us that really are there for fresh farm grown produce show up early. We don't have time to navigate around people on dates, or friends casually sipping coffee as they walk at a snails pace.
I get in. I get my supplies. I get out. I cook 80% of what I eat from scratch. I don't want to get stuck behind someone that doesn't know the difference between a grape or a cherry tomato.
Fabulous-South-9551@reddit
Maâam or Sir, so you get zero joy sipping on a delicious coffee with your compadres while browsing various stone fruit and your community membersâ farm yields?? Slow down some, bud!
Jcolebrand@reddit
Wait, what is the difference between the two? '79 and from the Deep South and those two were used interchangeably, even in the same sentence at times...
trainwreckhappening@reddit
One is crossed with a grape, the other is crossed with cherries.
Jcolebrand@reddit
I don't think that's how science works but I'm no scientist to argue with you ...
trainwreckhappening@reddit
Probably not but that's what my brain always told me.
Ok, a quick wiki search told me that grape tomatoes are thought to have originated in south East Asia. And cherry tomatoes are a cross between wild currant-type tomatoes and domesticated garden tomatoes.
sumthymelater@reddit
Saaaaaaame!
Treadingresin@reddit
A cherry tomato is a small, perfectly round sphere that tastes a more like what you get with the big beefsteak or globe tomatoes, more earthy, fresh and slightly bitter. They have thinner rinds so they are more juice and seeds.
Grape tomatoes are small, long oval shapes that have come to dominate the tomato section in the last 15 years. They are very sweet with a thick rind giving them a more noticeable crunch when you bite in and more meat, less juice. That and the sweetness is what has made them popular for snacking.
WeeDramm@reddit
I do enjoy a nice empty supermarket. Get in, get the stuff, get out.
Treadingresin@reddit

I will just slam a metamucil in the morning so I don't have to think about it

Sugar-free orange metamucil is part of my morning routine.
I get genuinely excited when CVS or the local grocery has them on sale.
MesabiRanger@reddit

touslesmatins@reddit
I drink my fiber at night so it doesn't mess with the absorption of nutrients or supplements I take in throughout the day. Which come to think of it, is my old person trait.
GreenApples8710@reddit
Wait. Talk to me about this.
As someone who also takes supplements throughout the day, am I screwing with their efficacy by doing the fiber first thing in the AM?

Would also highly recommend Carbe Diem pasta. 24g of fiber per serving and actually tastes the most like regular pasta than any other 'alternative' pasta I've tried.
imnottheoneipromise@reddit
Oh nice! I usually make my own pasta or buy the barilla protein pasta. Iâm on a GLP1 (102 lbs down!!! In maintenance now) so protein and fiber are my words of the day everyday lol. Iâve seen the carbe diem, I may try it out. Thanks for the recommendation
Jo_MamaSo@reddit
Of course! I think the only shape I would avoid would be the rotini, it tends to fall apart. But I use the fettuccine, elbows, cavatappi, and the orzo regularly!
kjb76@reddit
How do you eat/prepare them? I find them so doughy and canât get on board unless I make them as a quesadilla. They have such great nutrition creds but I canât enjoy them as an uncooked wrap.

According_Love2510@reddit
I have never felt more old lady than when I realized I actually look forward to my nightly glass of Metamucil. Like, this little ritual had crossed over from being a chore to âoh no- I canât miss my orange drink!â
CheesyRomantic@reddit
Is it? I started using lax-a-day.... is metamucil better?
BringBackHUAC@reddit
Metamucil comes in gummy form! Adult orange or kid mixed berry- same amount of fiber per gummy, just different dosage- one for kids, two for adults! Long term laxative use isn't good for you. Focus on fiber and water to help regulate and laxatives only when needed.
SixAlarmFire@reddit
I take a fiber capsule and it works well for me.

I feel so old lady but I talk that stuff up to eeeeeeeveryone. It's amazing. She said she tells her 20-year-old patients to use it - like literally everyone. She also always recommends the powder as it works better and ensures you get enough hydration with it. I take pre-measured little scoops in bottles on vacation with me. That is how much I appreciate my well regulated digestion now.
Billy-Ruffian@reddit
With no other change but getting about 40 grams of fiber a day, mostly from regular food, not supplements, I've lost about ten pounds in 3 months.
Righteouslimpet@reddit

Well, thanks to a childhood injury resulting in spinal arthritis, Iâm 42 and using a cane to get around. Iâm doing everything I can to beat it, but honestly, the cane does more for my condition than aleve and tylenol. I think its going to stay in my arsenal a while. The only trouble is deciding how I am going to mount it to my mountain bike.
elysiumstarz@reddit
Consider a holster across your back, if you can reach that way, like a warrior would carry a sword (across the back, not the hip).
Checked_Out_6@reddit
Lol, like a samurai. I appreciate the fun idea. But, nah bro, I donât want anything on me like that while riding, and it could cause injury if I land on it in a crash, or even cause a crash if it got hung up on something. I say this as an experienced rider who does 2k+ miles a year and rides across states for vacation. I have been looking at fishing pole holders, those might work if I modify it. I have also found mounts for canes that go on walkers that could mount on the bike. Shit, I been thinking I could probably just strap it to my rack, but even collapsed down the fucker is long, lol. I can probably strap it to my front fork on my gravel touring bike, it has cargo cages mounted on it, but it might interfere with the handlebars. Sorry, Iâm kind of spewing all this out because its been on my mind a lot. This had been a hard recovery, and Iâm excited to ride again. I got 11 miles in the other day. bottlebowling@reddit
I've had the same pair of custom-made orthotics for the last ten years, and, I can not stress this enough, they changed my life. I've always had very high arches, but as they started to collapse I went to a podiatrist and had some made. They are the best $135 I've ever spent. My back pain is significantly less, and most days my feet don't hurt at all.
tampapunklegend@reddit
I buy Skechers these days, because they have a really good insole already.
imnottheoneipromise@reddit
Yup the slip in! Sketchers are the only shoes that are wide enough for my feet
knittinghobbit@reddit
Do you buy wide width or is regular ok?
imnottheoneipromise@reddit
I buy their regular width. I have short, fat, thick feet that are wide where my toes meet my foot. Like I wear a size 5 shoe. But they are thick too not just wide. I went to the podiatrist because I had a tailors bunion and he told me to get sketchers. I only wear them now and no issues with the bunion at all now.
knittinghobbit@reddit
Awesome, thanks! I have bunions both sides (tailors bunions are the small toe side?) that need extra room but my heels are narrow, so wide shoes donât always work. Itâs so good to know about Skechers!
imnottheoneipromise@reddit
Yes tailors bunions are on the little toe side.
Iâll tell ya something else that helped a lot (this may or may not be an issue for you so just take it as an fyi for anybody) was losing weight. I was 215lbs at 5â1 and Iâve lost 102lbs over the year. I had to buy new shoes and now shoes fit me a lot better. I was ashamed to learn even my feet were fat! I still have wider feet than most but itâs much better now.
Key-Shift5076@reddit

keep_it_kayfabe@reddit
What I usually do is cut a chunk of fresh ginger, "skin" it, and then squeeze juice out of it with my lemon squeezer. Then I put the chunk of crushed ginger in my mug. Then I squeeze the juice of half a lemon using the same method. After that, about 2 tablespoons of honey, a few shakes of pepper, a few shakes of cinnamon (and add a cinnamon stick if I have any), and then add boiling hot water.
Takes about 5 minutes total! I usually have 2 mugs a night and the ginger at the bottom of the cup is tender and sweetened, which I then eat.
Complex-Canary7927@reddit

Remember to always use black pepper with the tumeric, it makes the anti inflammatory ingredient in the tumeric be absorbed 2000% more by your body
keep_it_kayfabe@reddit
That would fit right in as I already add pepper. I'm definitely going to hunt around for the fresh tumeric!

I never looked at older, overweight women and scoffed or made fun of them, but if I saw them I subconsciously thought they âshouldnâtâ be wearing that. geniusjunior@reddit

MercyfulFrigate@reddit
Keeps your dry bits dry and stops you from getting rashy and/or smelly. Its deodorant for your feet and junk.
geniusjunior@reddit
Ahhhhhhhhh okay. Lume is good for that too, maybe Iâll stay in my lane lol
No_Poem_2169@reddit
Lume is another amazing product, but Iâd categorize that as preventative. Gold bond does that too (not as well) but after the rash starts, the powder absorbs any moisture and adds a much needed slipperiness against any clothing that runs against it. Old people know whatâs up.
MercyfulFrigate@reddit
I find gold bond works better than other powders but like with most things ymmv. If lume stops working then you've got a fallback.

For camping or staying over at someone else's place.
Many a time have I slept on the hard ground or floor with nothing but the padding of a comforter because I had the impression that's what you were "supposed" to do.

My mom always used to tell a joke about "old" people sex. 40 year olds have hallway sex. Where when they pass each other in the hallway they both shout "fuck you" to each other. As you may infer, I grew up in an incredibly happy home and my parents totally stayed married to each other and my mom didn't become a criminal mastermind and remarry a less brainy criminal loser who was jealous of any attention not paid to him and she also definitely didn't get a matching tattoo with me to then later have it surgically removed (while having a diff surgery for normal reasons) and framed and sent in the mail to me to show me how much she loved me and my dad definitely didn't disinherit me because I was "never there" for him.
Anyway, so, hallway sex.

Powder toothpaste!
Always thought it was incredibly old fashioned, but decades of coffee consumption and a low income steered me to the concept of a weekly deep clean.
It's fabulous. Makes your teeth feel lovely and smooth, and definitely gets the stains off, too.
I use a hard, manual toothbrush for that job, as I figured my sonic toothbrush would damage the enamel with the powder.
Highly recommend.
I use this.
It's still only around ÂŁ1, and seems recession proof, like a lot of the old timey products eg, Barkeeper's Friend (same idea, abrasive powder that you wet and scrub with a brush, but it's for cleaning your house)

I'm up at 5am, and I drive slow down my road in the morning. I try not to get in anybody's way, turning down a side street if a car is coming up fast behind me. Why drive slow? In my area, 5 to 6am is peak critters-jumping-in-front-of-the-car time and I really don't want to hit a rabbit or something. You might think I'm overcompensating, but on a half mile stretch of road I'll have up to five or six animals bolt into the road daily. How people go 50mph down that road at 5:30 in the morning without hitting anything I'll never know.
So that's it, driving slowly.
