Of course not. Listen, I think your efforts are noble and right in the money, for a whole host of reasons, but redditors are notoriously lacking in rational thinking, relying instead more on group think and a mob mentality.

Not enjoying studying CCNA. Should I still pursue it if I want to become a Sys Admin?

I cut my teeth in Cisco IOS over 35 years ago, and still prefer the CLI over the web interface in most cases. I have also found that while other venders have their own platforms and syntax, most of the commands and options have similar syntax and structures. We support Cisco, Nomadix, FortiNet, Aruba, Ubiquiti and Palo Alto.

The CCNA Cert is among the recognized industry standards in networking. Taking the time to master the concepts will help your career in ways you can’t begin to fathom, even if you never configure another Cisco device in your life. Merely having the cert, and maintaining it over the decades of your career, will open doors of opportunity, that you might not experience otherwise. Stick with it, because this too shall pass.

This is a foreseeable consequence. This pattern of Indian management replacing American workers with wholly unqualified H1-B Indian workers, had been demonstrated thoroughly throughout Silicon Valley. In my experience, while there are a small percentage of very intelligent Indians, the vast majority are demonstrably under qualified and the product of crash courses.

The first mistake was allowing anyone who has no idea what they are doing to access their domain admin panel. The same holds true to all domain registrars, which offer similar functionality. Computer names - by user

Posted by anticd@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 390 comments

SM_DEV@reddit

Terrible Idea. You’re far better off to name a computer by asset tag, location prefix or a combination, then separately track which individual is assigned to which device, which can be tracked and updated by automation. This allows rapid replacement of defective devices, upgrades and churn procedures.

MSP locked us out of Microsoft 365 tenant - need advice on escalation

Posted by eserg2000@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 25 comments

SM_DEV@reddit

I doubt that. You are hearing only one side, primarily whining about losing access, while admitting there is at least one outstanding invoice for services rendered, but there is no mention about how the suspension might have been accomplished. Did the MSP literally lock them out of their tenancy, or did they terminate a require service that allowed the client to access their tenancy? Did they suspend DNS service? Did they remove a suspend a VPN? Was the client thoroughly warned ahead of time? It seems likely so, given the whining mentioned at least one outstanding invoice. I don’t know all of the details, nor does anyone here, save perhaps the most whining client, who may or may not be privy to all of the c-suite level discussions between the MSP and the client.

SM_DEV@reddit

Businesses don’t pay taxes, their consumers do. Sure, people such as yourself like to impose taxes on business owners, but we literally don’t pay those imposed taxes, you the consumer does. Business owners pass those costs along to you in the form of higher prices. Why do corporations only rarely complain about higher taxes and in fact support tax increases for certain public works? Because they KNOW the consumer will be the one ultimately footing the bill. Tax the rich? They pass those costs on to you. Stop being foolish.

SM_DEV@reddit

I’m not disputing that. Losing access to services which you haven’t paid for however, isn’t a violation. It’s no different than MS cutting off access when the MSP doesn’t pay their bill. This is nothing more than a contract dispute, to be resolved through the procedures defined in the contract between the MSP and the client.

SM_DEV@reddit

You’re NOT a business owner are you? Perhaps you haven’t read the terms of their contract. If the contract the tenant signed, allows for suspension or termination of all services due to non-payment, then the MSP is on solid legal ground.

“They said it was for unrelated outstanding bills…” Did you listen to yourself? “They” being the debtor, who never lies. “They” are admitting there is an outstanding balance. They choice pay their bill and dispute the invoice using the means provided for in their contract, which I’m positive includes provision for the MSP to suspend all services, as one of them means for collection of payment.

Vibe Coding Is Creating Braindead Coders

You can either stay where you are, or invest in yourself. However, if you aren’t willing to invest in yourself, why would you think any one else would? For the record, we pay for all training successfully completed by testing or certification, but we do so reimbursement basis. There is no annual training budget cap. We chose the reimbursement method after being burned several times by people who didn’t take their training as seriously as they should have, because it wasn’t their money they were burning. The reimbursement method resolves that issue.

What you are describing, is being deceitful towards their client. In a similar situation, I’d probably continue to pay as a senior Java developer, bill as a very junior kotlin developer, while paying for your off hours training on a reimbursement basis. Advancing your pay once the twin of has been completed. Being honest is better for the client, for you and for the company you work for. It gives you cover should you make a rookie mistake, doesn’t setup the client to have unreasonable expectations and provides you a runway to advance your career. I get that not all employer operate this way, but in many cases ethics goes out the window the moment profits are threatened, even though in the long run, honesty bears more fruit than deception.

Hey, take my advice or don’t. What you elect to do, or don’t do, doesn’t affect me or my wallet at all. You do you. However, clients don’t pay developers to learn. They hire what they hope to be SME’s and SME’s are made by experimentation, failure and recovery. In short, gaining experience. The only question is where that experience is obtained and who pays for it. If your employer is willing to pay format, great… but it will affect how much they are able or willing to compensate you. If you pay for it yourself, you not only have control over your own what you learn, but the time necessary, and take additional training expense out of your employers quiver of reasons to pay you less. But again, you do whatever fits your life best.

That what off-hours studying and research is for. The project budget might NOT be there to pay for your learning the how and why the code works or doesn’t quite work, but investing your off time and effort into understanding the code, is investing in yourself, which pays dividends down the road. Average below average developers can be come superstars by investing in home labs, experimenting in their off time, etc. Highly recommended.
