Has Anyone got anyone tips for getting the weekly shop bill down?

Posted by Throwaway945384@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 487 comments

Rinlow05@reddit

Don't be loyal to brands - there are other options that will be cheaper and taste just as good. Don't shop when hungry. Draw up a weeks meal plan, buy only what you need for it, and stick to it. Batch cook - if feeding 2 cook for 4 for example, and either freeze the extra or have the same meal a second time that week as Leftovers. Or for a lunch. If applicable or appropriate, consider a diet. Mine did wonders for my shopping bill and got a gold star from my doctor for it 😂

How do you plan your meals and do your weekly food shop?

Posted by Parsnip_Mondays@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 34 comments

Rinlow05@reddit

Single person household. I plan my weeks meals mostly based on my shift pattern for that week, working on an alternating Late/Early finish time, with every Monday being a WFH day. I do home cooked food Sat & Sun, but also Mon if its my early shift. My home cooked meals are deliberately 2 person portions so I 'cook once eat twice', preserving the 2nd portions for 'leftovers' on Thur & Fri. On Tue & Wed I usually do something simple such as a 'meat & two veg' or a supermarket ready-meal that I add additional fresh cooked veg or a salad to go with it. My primary weekly shop is done Sunday morning. In summary my week looks like this: Mon - WFH - Home cook if Early, if Late meat & veg or ready-meal with side portion Tue - meat & veg or ready-meal with side Wed- meat & veg or ready-meal with side Thur - Leftovers from homecooked meal made previous weekend Fri - Leftovers from homecooked meal made previous weekend Sat - homecooked meal (2 person portion) Sun - Weekley shop & homecooked meal (2 person portion)

Do you believe that taking vitamins and supplements actually helps you?

Posted by TSC-99@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 51 comments

Rinlow05@reddit

Yes. Before I started taking Vit D supplements it was a nightmare to get myself out of bed every morning. I had not energy even after a good night's sleep. It took about 4 weeks once I started taking them to notice the difference, and it became a dramatic difference at the 8 week mark. I was a totally different person. Then my jar ran out and I was slow to re-order, and I immediately noticed I was backsliding into the sluggish, exhausted person I used to be. I will never go without Vit D ever again.

I don't buy clothes, games, or go out much. I have a total of one TV subscription service, and no more. I clean and maintain my house and garden entirely myself, no paid services. But I do buy food. Lots of food. I buy from online retailers thing my local shops don't sell, or don't sell cheaply. Examples: mutton meat instead of lamb, wild game meat like venison, eggs from rare chicken breeds, products from foreign countries from specialist importers, single original chocolate.

Any recommendation for kitchen companies? Would you recommend Wren?

I work in administration for tradesmen. Every single one of them say avoid Wren. Any other kitchen installer except Wren. They are awful. I personally had a new kitchen fitted Feb 2025, designed by Wickes, and installed by one of their registered contracting companies and was reasonably satisfied. The only thing that went wrong was my own fault and not theirs.

Do I really have to do microsuction for ear wax buildup?

Posted by One-Secretary844@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 68 comments

Rinlow05@reddit

I must admit I preferred microsuction, as the water jet of the syringe has a very, very small chance of rupturing the ear drum. That is also why you need to soften the wax with oil before hand, so when it's removed, it doesn't take anything vital with it. I can't recommend anywhere specifically as I had it done privately as I am lucky enough to have a private practice offer this service only a 2 min drive away, and he was very good. I have been there 3 times in 10 years.

Do I really have to do microsuction for ear wax buildup?

Posted by One-Secretary844@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 68 comments

Rinlow05@reddit

Microsuction or water syringe. You need to soften the wax with drops of olive oil for 2-3 weeks before having it done. Neither option hurts. The water syringe option feels like being under water, but you aren't, so feels slightly odd. This option is very fast to do. Microsuction is very noisy, and took longer than water syringe, and my ears rang for 30 mins afterwards, but utterly harmless. It almost tickled. When I had mine done this way, my ear was so full the olive oil hadn't soaked all the way to the bottom of the wax plug, so the guy poured a chemical solution down it that loosened the wax - it fizzed madly and it sounded like I had fireworks going off inside my head. I found it almost funny.

Try taking Vitamin D for the 'tiredness'. Most people in the UK are Vitamin D deficient for most of the year, and one of the big symptoms of it is feeling lethargic, demotivated and tired, even after a good night's sleep.

Most of the UK population is deficient in vitamin D for most of the year due to limited daylight hours, or limited access to daylight due to their working environment. I was extremely grumpy and lethargic for decades before I started taking vit D supplements. Really changed my life after taking them.

My dad ran his own small shop, and after seeing the long hours & endless paperwork involved, I vowed I would never run my own business. I would be happy at a corporate desk job. My mum was a nursery nurse, and hearing the stories she told of both the children & the parents, convinced me that I will never want to work in a child related industry, and that I will never, ever, have kids of my own. My sister says the same. I have been employed at the same company now for 15+ years, and am happy with my desk job, that doesn't involve children, and the paperwork has all but been eliminated due to computers. I will never be rich, but my life is stable, and I can afford the hobbies, treats and small luxuries that I prefer without too much worry. And no kids either 😂

Iv got £18 left, and as its my Birthday next week, I am seriously thinking on using it to get an £18 cake from M&S for it.

In terms of cookware, do you use both words - 'a pan' and 'a pot' (to cook soup or boil water for pasta, for example)?

I see pans as cooking equipment that can only be used on the hob top of the oven. A pot is cooking equipment that can go inside the oven to cook things like stews.

Genuine question. Why are tradies in the UK so unreliable?

Posted by SunnySosej@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 611 comments

Rinlow05@reddit

There is a shortage of tradesmen, so they can pick and choose what job they do. However, they will agree to do any job to your face, just in case the one they want to do falls through or is delayed. They can then do the less desired job, thus avoiding being in a no work situation.
