Why is the news being so dramatic about the heat wave?

Posted by ChelseaMourning@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 465 comments

RefdOneThousand@reddit

Overall, they are not being dramatic - it is exceptional weather, with health implications, and people need to be aware. If they downplay it, people may not be aware. It will very likely be very hot over several days (ie a heatwave) so vulnerable people (young, elderly, sick) and their carers need to be made aware and protected. A lot of new news sources tend to be click bait-ey / overly dramatic, whatever the news, but the reasonable news sources are not being dramatic - and if they are, they may be justified, as this is extreme weather and not good for us as a country.

Do you microwave baked beans?

Hob is best for thickness / flavour, but micro is easier (no stirring/sticking, easier to clean pyrex). Good compromise: microwave on low power (300w) for 7 minutes, stir halfway through; similar to the hob, thickens up nicely, easy to clean.

In the UK, someone who delivers fresh milk to homes etc, usually early in the morning. Very long-standing joke (popularised by TV comedy from the 1960s onwards) is that they had lots of affairs with housewives.

Lots of people just don’t want to take individual responsibility and just say “but look at the rich! Look at the Americans! But it’s society / big oil companies forcing me to do this” etc. There is some truth to this, but just saying “i can’t fix it myself, so I’ll just carry on regardless” is cowardly and ultimately self-destructive. People need to take individual responsibility and take individual action, however small, while also organising with others to campaign for action at the political level, and boycotting / lobbying businesses. Otherwise we are all screwed.

There’s a massive outage with Sky Q boxes, their app and website. Down Detector website is showing tens of thousands of reported issues, and it’s all over Twitter and Facebook - but nothing to n Sky social media admitting there is an issue.

I think it makes most sense for certain high usage electric vehicles like taxis, emergency vehicles, and delivery vans. It could even be scaled up for larger vehicles like buses and trucks - maybe they have multiple batteries that can be swapped out, rather than one big battery. But i agree it will be very hard to standardise without some form of compulsion. It’s not like all batteries are located in a nice easy to access location and there soften good design reason for that.

Yes, you are right. Chinese company Nio are doing this. You drive in to a small building (like a car wash) and a robot removes your battery and replaces it with a fully charged one. It takes around 4min 40 seconds to do: https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/nios-uk-swap-stations-will-change-ev-batteries-under-five-minutes

How do you wash your pillows when they go all yellow? There has to be a good tip out there!

It may be obvious to you and most people, but OP didn’t appear to wash their pillow at all, so they need some guidance on how frequently to wash a pillow protector 🙂

Definitely agree about pillow protectors. Bit you also need to regularly wash your pillow protector: at least once a week, along with your pillow case, or whenever you have woken up and noticed it is damp from sweat etc.

How familiar are people in UK with these products? In the Faroe Islands, they are very popular, and are mostly in every grocery store, so I’m just curious.

Used to live by the Jacob’s factory in Liverpool, which was also next to a jam factory (Nelson’s, now closed). Going past on the bus on way to school was great - the smell from the two places was amazing. And loads of neighbours worked at Jacob’s, so we got “broken” Club biscuits cheaply, plus twiglets. Glad I didn’t go to a different school and have to go past the dog food factory… not a great smell!

Almost everyone is has gone home because the office wifi is down. I leave on Friday - should I just go home?

Make sure you have it in writing, and agree with your manger if you need to take it or are getting paid for it. Remember, if you get paid for owed leave and you are on a salary then it never works out that working 5 days leave is like getting paid for a whole working week (I’ve found out the hard way in the past!) so sometimes it’s better to just take the leave - but if you haven’t got another job lined up you may want the money!

RefdOneThousand@reddit

Yes, very good point. HR should have done a calculation for OP (and OP’s manager) of the remaining leave they are entitled to when OP handed in your notice. This should be used to work out OP’s last WORKING day, and OP’s last day of employment - they are not necessarily the same. OP: eg if you leave halfway through your “leave year”, you are only entitled to half your annual leave, so if you have already taken over half of it, you have to repay them.

Stick it out - don’t do anything rash, you will very likely need a reference from them for your next job (or even two - some employers ask for last two employers for references). Use this time to sort out your handover / finish off any work. Also, agree with your manager IN WRITING TODAY what is happening with your leave - are they expecting you to take Wed/Thur/Fri off, or are they going to pay you for it? If you need to take the leave, then this is effectively your last day and you should be handing in your entry pass, etc. Good luck in your next job!

How can we encourage people to stop cutting through our driveway?

Remote controlled electric gate on the exit onto main road - this will block off the cut-through. It would be remote control to open / close and retract behind your front wall. Make it a tall-ish one so people can see it before trying to walk through, or they’ll just try to jump over it. Looks like you don’t have land to fit one on the one-way road side, otherwise that’s also an option; even if you did, you don’t really need two gates, though it looks better. Cheaper option would be a manual opening gate on the one-way road side, but you’ll need to spot your car to open - a pain and a car-jacking risk (unless you switch off engine) each time. You could always have this as a back up
