Ricky_Martins_Vagina@reddit
At first I thought you meant people are driving through your drive as a shortcut 😂
RoscoeBass@reddit
The ‘insurance claim’ diagram with irrelevant detail was what did it ..
MyLifeTheSaga@reddit
I did too, until I saw your comment
CheeryBottom@reddit
Oh god! That’s what I thought too. Never read all the text beneath the image. 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️
Ravenser_Odd@reddit
Same here. I was thinking 'the cheek of some drivers', until people started asking how bollards were meant to stop pedestrians.
IAdoreAnimals69@reddit
I saw those rectangles as examples of cars driving through. Ok you can turn left or right onto that road so cutting through from the one way doesn't really help, and coming off the main road to get onto the end of the one way doesn't present any advantage either, but every nanosecond counts in this fast paced world we live in now.
imfranksome@reddit
Using rectangles to designate people is wild
katya-kitty@reddit
They're the owners' parked cars!
suazzo77@reddit
They have motion arrows!
katya-kitty@reddit
I took it as showing us where they park and how they get their cars in and out
imfranksome@reddit
Ah that’s quite reasonable
sympathetic_earlobe@reddit
The haphazard parking of OP or their spouse is what has led to the misunderstanding as it looks like a comic showing the direction the cars are driving.
...that and not reading the text.
Pellellell@reddit
I also thought this
ScottOld@reddit
The fact that it doesn’t surprise anyone people would is a bit of an issue lol
User11223123@reddit
The number of roads that were used as shortcuts that have been turned into dead ends is crazy though
ScorpioTiger11@reddit
That's the UK for ya!! 🙈
Lilz007@reddit
Confession, I did read the text beneath the image, and I still thought OP meant drivers, not pedestrians
🤦🏻
Neat_Expression_5380@reddit
So did i…What kinda pedestrian are gonna scratch cars?
renebelloche@reddit
I read your comment and I’m still under the impression its pedestrians.
ScorpioTiger11@reddit
Ok now I'm doubting myself. Did I reddit too much today?!
ScorpioTiger11@reddit
I'm with you fellow crucial info misser!
RedditUser092120@reddit
So did I 😅
MaskedBunny@reddit
I read the text and I was wondering why so many pedestrians were walking around carrying big boxes
crypto_grandma@reddit
There's text beneath the image?
CheeryBottom@reddit
Apparently so.
Repulsive-Lake6668@reddit
I did read it and still thought they meant they were driving through lol.
Neat_Expression_5380@reddit
So did i.
ScorpioTiger11@reddit
It took me til now to realise OP meant people not cars..I have adhd and always miss the crucial sh1t in text, but I wasn't the only one for a nice change!
tobotic@reddit
It's the rectangles with arrows on the diagram that give that impression.
ZestyData@reddit
My dumb ass had to flick back and forth between this comment and OP's description because I was convinced you misunderstood and that people were obviously driving through the drive.
Penny finally dropped that OP means pedestrians are walking through, not driving through.
Ricky_Martins_Vagina@reddit
😂😂 I was getting mad on OPs behalf, especially the 'squeezing past our cars' part like on what planet is it acceptable to just drive through someone's front yard, never mind when their own cars are parked up!
MateoKovashit@reddit
Why dont they just use walk ffs. I thought it was cars too
JonnyBhoy@reddit
I thought people in OPs area are completely unhinged.
newfor2023@reddit
I wouldn't rule it out
Ravenser_Odd@reddit
I wouldn't put it past some people to try.
Driver tries to squeeze car through incredibly small space
Justboy__@reddit
Ohhhh. I definitely thought they meant people were driving through. I was confused as OP said there was already two cars on the drive. I was wondering how big this drive was lol.
BeeBoth5141@reddit
This is exactly what I did 🤣🤣
Parker4815@reddit
Ooooooh. Yeah OP didn't need to include so much of the road in their picture.
banisheduser@reddit
Ffs!
I too thought they meant cars cutting through!
Festivefire@reddit
If it's pedestrians, and not people driving their car through, what's going to scratch their car? I can see a driver scraping a parked car as they try to squeeze through, but if they're worried about their vehicles getting keyed by a pedestrian, nothing short of a fence is going to do it, although I don't really see how people walking through the drive as opposed to around it makes the car any less likely to get keyed. If somebody wants to key your car, they're going to key it.
Ricky_Martins_Vagina@reddit
I don't think OP is worried about anyone being malicious like that, it's more the carelessness.
People squeezing through are more likely to scratch the paint inadvertently with stuff on their clothing like zips / buttons / buckles / jewellery etc, even more so if they're carrying bags / handbags.
Festivefire@reddit
If that's what they're worried about, then i hope for their sake they never use a parking lot, a place notorious for pedestrians squeezing between cars :/, or park on the street for downtown for that matter. I'd be way more worried about that than a pedestrian dinging my car while walking through the neighborhood.
Ricky_Martins_Vagina@reddit
What's to say they aren't equally concerned about that? Difference is that's a known risk when you park is such places and you can mitigate by parking further away / in an end space / etc, not something you expect to have to worry about in your own drive.
Aggravating_Aide_561@reddit
Same
username994743@reddit
Same, thought perhaps there are traffic lights and people jumping those
MonsieurJag@reddit
This. I assumed they were using it as some sort of car U-turning area which would be incredibly cheeky of them!
TemporarySprinkles2@reddit
Ah good, I thought the same.
As it's pedestrians, it's like trying to divert water using a fork. If people are doing it then they're not going to stop because, I want to emphasise this, people are pricks.
realchairmanmiaow@reddit
yup, you have to go out of your way. Had people sitting on my small garden wall at the front, drinking, leaving rubbish. Destroyed the wall, put paving slabs down for bins, but bins are only there 1 or 2 days a week. Then teenagers want to sit there and somebody decided it was okay for their toddler to walk across and piss on my tree, okay fuck it. Garden centre, spikey plants please. Problem solved. You cannot solve people being pricks. You just have to make it a bad option from their point of view. Nobody gives a shit about your property but you.
NERV-Miata@reddit
Can’t you cover your wall with some kind of sticky substance?
realchairmanmiaow@reddit
That'll inevitably end up in conflict, hard to argue with a wall that doesn't exist, or plants that do.
TicklyTim@reddit
Yeah, I was trying to work out how a car was trying to defeat the one-way system. 😃
Ricky_Martins_Vagina@reddit
Or the relevance at all of there even being a one-way system
TicklyTim@reddit
I thought if the one-way was stopped, they were nipping through the drive to join the flow of traffic down.
iGhost36@reddit
omg same! especially with the diagram. Then I had to re-read it haha
MJLDat@reddit
I read it and still thought it! Had to reread it.
LiveFastDieRich@reddit
I think its the denotation of the one way system, a system typically reserved for motorized vehicles
Ricky_Martins_Vagina@reddit
And the pictures of the cars with the arrows coming from them
GakkoAtarashii@reddit
This is shitty communication.
Ricky_Martins_Vagina@reddit
Absolutely terrible. I feel like OP knows that if they'd just said "pedestrians cutting through my drive" we wouldn't really give a fuck.... The fact that they sketched it out and everything 😂
slade364@reddit
Me too. Short attention span and lots of words means I jump to conclusions, clearly!
catsnstuff17@reddit
So did I! I was raging on their behalf 😂
Gauntlets28@reddit
That's what I thought they meant as well. Even reading through the writing underneath, I didn't realise that it wasn't meant as a "they're also walking through" comment.
UtopiaFrenzy@reddit
Same! I was thinking the junction must have really slow traffic lights if people are opting to squeeze their car past OPs!
kurtanglesmilk@reddit
I thought maybe the road was no right turn so people were driving through the driveway in order to circumvent it
undercovergloss@reddit
I’m so dumb I still don’t get it😭🤣
Elgin_McQueen@reddit
Took me 5 attempts. It's pedestrians walking across their drive they're annoyed about, not cars.
tipytopmain@reddit
Thought the same, assumed there was some seriously crafty drivers in OP's area.
Repulsive_Soup_9015@reddit
There’s really only two solutions to stop pedestrians. A physical barrier whether it be a gate or a lot cheaper yet still an inconvenience to yourself, a chain. I’m struggling to see how so many in the comments are getting the wrong end of the stick or genuinely suggesting ridiculous ideas.
ssramirezss@reddit
Put those one direction ramps in.
lovesorangesoda636@reddit
Short term - bins. People aren't likely to want to squeeze past icky bins.
Longer term - you might need to get yourself a gate.
olimeillosmis@reddit
Get retractable bollards. Really popular in my area.
dth300@reddit
Bollards wouldn’t stop pedestrians though, unless you have them really close together
Proper-Principle-878@reddit
That’s a fence.
szu@reddit
Big potted plants then? Just enough to line them up so that with the cars, you don't really have any space to walk past. I suppose they could still walk past on the other side but that's just a bit creepy..
Orange_nut@reddit
I think plants sounds like the best answer in this situation.
You need something that will stop a small fleshy thing, but let through a large metal thing. Nearly all solutions which block the route for pedestrians will also frustrate you trying to park there.
But plants could looks big, overhang a bit, and discourage walkers. But if it's the right plant, a car could just push the foliage aside without damaging the vehicle. Choosing the right plant would be key I guess - something that doesn't have a lot of woody internal structure which could cause scratches. A big palm or something maybe.
JCOl68@reddit
Spiky plants to annoy pedestrians too
CrazyPlatypusLady@reddit
I recommend Mahonia.
Secundum21@reddit
My mum planted pyracantha to seal off the short cut through our garden. Beautiful berries, big-ass thorns.
BeatificBanana@reddit
Are you suggesting op and their partner get out of their car to manually move loads of big potted plants every time they want to drive in and out of their driveway?
Normal-Height-8577@reddit
You need something that's moveable by remote control, otherwise you're just ensuring that you can't use it either.
The goal isn't to seal it off completely, or you'd just get a brickie to create a fence. The goal is to make sure you have sole use.
gravity_fed@reddit
Why would you get a brickie to do that?
Normal-Height-8577@reddit
I'm tired. I meant a wall, not a fence.
ukbeasts@reddit
Add lava around the bollards
COMMANDO_MARINE@reddit
Just stand in your driveway with a bible and ask people if they have time to talk about their lord and saviour Jesus Christ. After a while, you'll find people won't even use the public pathway next to your house but will cross the road instead.

Runaroundheadless@reddit
COMMANDO_MARINE, not that it matters at all to most folk, you deserve, imo, a massive amount more upvotes. The amount of up votes for pointing out that bollards need to be close together is astounding. There are a lot of wise engineering folk out there /s.
Bin idea is really on it though. And the gate coming is realistic. So fair enough.
My best mate just had to slab his driveway and put in a fence diversion, in fact extension to kerb, because the Cooncil just stopped the pavement and the footfall has worn out his cheap 30yr old newish build thin tar driveway. The private housing caul de sac is American Style big driveways. No pavements. Point is I do sympathise with the OP.
Runaroundheadless@reddit
That suggestion from c_m is brilliant. I may use it myself as I live on a busy street. It’d be nice to get parked more easily. I have added a suggestion for a back-up plan when patrolling is not possible.
A couple of large, badly made signs with slogans like, “Not today Satan!” Or,for eye catching, I’d use the one I’ve uploaded.
That should allow you to nip indoors for a while and have a cup of tea and a sandwich. It will also help to reduce foot traffic to a minimum when you are out or on holiday. Only a few really evil folk will go through. Well…scratch that….probably only very saintly and selfish folk.
PepperSpree@reddit
“Not today Satan” is just 🤣
AlternativePrior9559@reddit

I'm thinking a moat filled with bollards. Should a pedestrian climb into the moat, they'd have a job getting through.
Son_of_Atreus@reddit
Bollards plus dynamite, perhaps?
hippodribble@reddit
No, if the pedestrians were close together, they'd just squeeze between the bollards.
hatthewmartley@reddit

Runaroundheadless@reddit
Hampstead?
olimeillosmis@reddit
Moseley, Birmingham.
Lots of gravel driveways with retractable bollards.
Runaroundheadless@reddit
Why? Seriously, I do know what they are. Do you have a problem with strangers cars parking there or something? I am aware of developments that are adjacent to less salubrious areas having them ( a bridge over a river) to stop through way or entrance and in that case residents have a fob to allow passage.
olimeillosmis@reddit
My neighbour has a Porsche 911 and a BMW i6 and he keeps them both on the drive. Key fob attacks are a thing, so he has bollards.
Runaroundheadless@reddit
Got it. Apologies. I was off on keep out.( to be fair that was original post) Now I understand there are places where keep in is priority.
hopscotch77@reddit
bollards look so much worse than gates
Uvanimor@reddit
The issue isn’t cars, it’s pedestrians.
stoatwblr@reddit
in that case add chains between the bollards
BigBunneh@reddit
Yes! And a CCTV to record the inevitable tumble as someone tries to step over it - fun days!
stoatwblr@reddit
they won't step over a chain that's higher than 1m off the ground at its lowest point (ie, relatively taut chain)
but yeah, cctv to show them trying to get past it is useful for fending off bogus injury claims
(let them make outrageous claims and sign off a statutory declaration BEFORE revealing the existence of CCTV footage as it's a useful way of getting all your costs back and having them declared vexatious - which puts a dent in their ability to harrass anyone else)
BigBunneh@reddit
I was being serious, as in it would be fun to watch 😁 The odd occasion I've tried to go over those low-hanging chains I've almost come a cropper add they're so hard to distance judge at that level 😁 😂
wandering_beth@reddit
Or if they aren't on a water meter then just put a sprinkler down, nobody will walk through if they are going to get soaked
Yes this would be pointless on rainy days, and waste a lot of water, but you can guarantee it will stop most pedestrians cutting through
moscullion@reddit
Motion activated sprinkler system?
discopants2000@reddit

Jolly_Blueberry_6192@reddit

bollards look better than a gate is certainly an opinion that a person could have
goldkestos@reddit

theoht_@reddit
not sure how bollards would stop people.
Beedux@reddit
How are bollards going to stop people walking through?
craigstone_@reddit
One massive bollard that's the exact thickness and length of the entire opening. With a second, tiny bollard on top.
MrAnderson69uk@reddit
Gets some chains linked between them. When the bollards are done, so it the chain to drive over, but when up, the chain will be the centre of amusement as you see people try to be cool and hurdle it, only it’s a bit taller than they usually are. Perhaps even two chains where one is dangling down at half the height of the top chain - this should help prevent kids running under and make it harder for adults to step through. It’s also a bit more decorative!!!
theshortlady@reddit
Pointy bollards that are motion sensitive!
BlueTrin2020@reddit
lol I thought too that OP meant cars drove his driveway, I wanted to know where he lived to see such animals lol
MrAnderson69uk@reddit

completefuckweasel@reddit
I’ve got retractable bollards but I’ve put it down to the cold weather 😕
No_Negotiation5654@reddit
I disagree, a nice cast iron or well built wood gate looks way better than a couple of bollards plonked in the middle.
chasedarknesswithme@reddit
They really don't. I was mortified when our neighbours did it. Makes it look like we're in some gone in 60 seconds film where anyone would be bothered to nick their 2016 X3.
mitchanium@reddit
...and cameras, because some dozy tw@ will attempt to plough through them and do a runner.
Dans77b@reddit
I'd rather have people walking through my driveway than open a gate everytime I move a car.
utukore@reddit
Only need to block one entry though
BeatificBanana@reddit
But then either OP or their partner would end up blocking the other in, which would be annoying to deal with unless they are both on very predictable schedules and the first to get home from work is always the last to leave for work in the morning (which is unlikely)
utukore@reddit
Put the gate in the middle. Checkmate
Glad_Ninja2235@reddit
Best idea
Morkamino@reddit
You dont have to because the blocked side still has a gate to get out through. You can get one of those gates with a little remote for in your car and its easy leave easy park.
And unless you both need your cars at the same time, you can just use whichever car is currently parked in front.
janiestiredshoes@reddit
Or even just block between the cars - that way both can drive in.
Sorry_Software8613@reddit
With a one way system, and make them pay to exit.
D0wnb0at@reddit
That’s actually something I didn’t think of. Just block the least used out of the 2, and if you have to go out the blocked one, just replace it as you leave.
Means you can drive home without getting out the car to open it, and much less hassle opening it to leave than it is to open it to get in.
CrazyButRightOn@reddit
There is this little thing called electricity.
SrCikuta@reddit
I would try something else before going straight to electrocuting pedestrians, though.
300-Multiple-Choices@reddit
Well, waterboarding takes 20 to 40 seconds when electrocution can be instant. But you do you.
Extreme_Objective984@reddit
You also have to be able to catch the buggers, to water board them. Electricity can be delivered at range and remotely.
Throwaway91847817@reddit
The clear solution is a motion activated turret gun.
ScorpioTiger11@reddit
This is the only correct response 👆
BriefAmphibian7925@reddit
Yeah, but there's the cleanup, too.
CrazyButRightOn@reddit
I’m talking about an electric gate.
ldn-ldn@reddit
Why waste time?
MrAnderson69uk@reddit
You don’t need to go full electric chair electrocution, an electric cattle fence with give them enough of a wake up call and shock them into realising they’re inconsiderate arseholes walking through someone’s property - but just check first there’s no ramblers rights paths through where you want to deter pedestrians!!!!
HeretohelpifIcan@reddit

LordGeni@reddit
A tank?
Betweentheminds@reddit
Ha, yeah. That’s harsh. 😅
OP - INFO- why do they want to? Is it pure laziness; is it not clear it’s a drive, or is there something blocking pavement (like a bus stop with lots of people they are trying to navigate round).
I was going to suggest flower beds but if you still want to drive in and out that’s not great. I think if you can shed any light on why that might help? If it’s obviously a drive way I would hope most people won’t walk across it to save 5 seconds, so I wonder what they are walking round.
daveshuffles@reddit
Electric gates will solve that.
HELMET_OF_CECH@reddit
Pass on that. People will drop litter everywhere/spit chewing gum etc.
MrAnderson69uk@reddit
Electric gate, just use a 18 or 24” ram, like the old SuperJack (motorised satellite dish moving ram) and a garage door opener control!
FaMeSp3aR@reddit
Get a sign that says “beware of dogs” or “dogs running free” with a picture of a pitbull on it. Ought to do the trick lol
DementedDon@reddit
As it's pedestrians, probably gates, with locks. Bit of a pain if you're used to just driving in to park, but if peeps are just strolling through now, I'd imagine they'd have no problem opening a gate. Short term, you could try chains at an awkward height where peeps have to choose between limbo dancing under or high jumping over.
Shifty377@reddit
I think the psychology of removing an object would stop 90% of people. It changes the situation from a passive corner cut to knowingly accessing someone's property, which most people wouldn't do for a 3 second time saving.
intenseskill@reddit
Exactly most people might not even realise it's wrong. They will do without thinking
ScorpioTiger11@reddit
It's me, hi, I'm the problem, it's me.
DementedDon@reddit
That's kinda why I mentioned chains or even ropes with a no trespassing sign. Relatively cheap and something you could probably install yourself in a couple of hours, if you've got the tools.
BriefAmphibian7925@reddit
Yeah, I'd try the cheap plastic chains at both ends first, then switch to something that can't easily be stepped over (but at one end as that would likely be sufficient) if that didn't work.
manual_typewriter@reddit
If they opened a gate, they’d leave it open too.
MarrV@reddit
Eletric gate would work best: convince for the OP and family, and eliminates the route for the pedestrians.
janiestiredshoes@reddit
Another idea for prevention if you still want to drive in to park: something temporary between the cars. So you're not preventing access to the drive, just preventing access through, which is what the pedestrians are using.
Something like a rope or chain going across between the cars should do the trick and doesn't stop you driving in to park. Should be a quick fix as well.
HighlyNegativeFYI@reddit
How could they open the gate? OP said they do it WHEN THE CARS ARE THERE. 🤦♂️
xeroksuk@reddit
Probably just one gate needed, that would be enough to put the majority of people off.
Revolutionary-Mode75@reddit
electronic gates would solve that pain.
DementedDon@reddit
Whoa, listen to Mr. Moneybags here! Are we electrifying them too, so peeps can't climb them?

rik182@reddit
Short term / long term, just park your car in a way it's impossible for another car to fit through your drive..
BigBunneh@reddit
It's people they're trying to stop cutting through. Mind you, parking a pile of people in the way would probably be a good deterrent too.
rik182@reddit
Pretty sure you could park your car in a way that makes it difficult to cut through. Even if it was too force them to go round the cars instead, that ends up being more hassle than walking the normal way
Aggravating-Gap-3830@reddit
Some. In lockdown my neighbour was licking his fingers and rubbing saliva on bin and car door handle ls and licking between. Really weird
AffectionateAir2856@reddit
Get a big plant pot that fills the gap between the road and where your two cars butt up against each other, that will force people to do a wider path around the cars and probably just encourage them to stick to the pavement, but won't impact your parking ability.

batteryforlife@reddit
Is it walking through a garden if its just a bit of concrete that OPs are parked on? This exact same set up is on my road (well its a small block of flats with 5 parking spaces out front), and I cut over the corner every single time. Are you worried the concrete will wear out? Come on.

Oh I own two of the aforementioned kids, they know full well if I catch them straying beyond stated boundaries, outside privileges will be instantly ceased. I hate that some people would have to go to such lengths to preserve their plot, a bit of conscientious neighbouring goes a long way and is not difficult
Slyspy006@reddit
Meanwhile, here in Blighty, I'm astonished that fencing seems so novel elsewhere.
PatserGrey@reddit
Oh don't get me started on that. As an immigrant I'm used to brick walls between gardens, front and back. I've just become acclimatised through time that at best we can expect in the UK are rubbish fences (that will rot) at the back and be lucky if there's any partition at the front
Mr-_-Steve@reddit
Don't get me wrong, if me and my wife didn't spend ages doing the garden and didn't have a dog we let run around the property I may not have invested in blocking our property off. May not.. though probably still would as im a miserable fucker

Hedgehogosaur@reddit
really annoying to deal with everytime they use their drive though, especially when coming home
wad11656@reddit
Right? Every time you leave your house, you have to:
1) undo the chain 2) Enter the car 3) start the car 4) drive out into the middle of the (presumably busy 2-lane 1-way) road 5) put your hazards on so people don't rear end you while, once again, you're a sitting duck IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD 6) get out of your car 7) re-clip the chain 8) get back in the car and drive away
Then you have to do all those steps over again, but backwards, when you arrive home. I have No idea what these idiots are thinking. You need something remote controlled or sensor-automated. Like a fence or large parking spot blockers

Close one of the entrances. Simples. You will have to perform a bit of car ballet on occasion, but it might be worth it.
saywherefore@reddit
If each car only needs to enter/exit through one entrance then you could add a low fence or hedge across the middle of your drive. It would need a gate to allow one of you to get to your car, but I suspect people are less likely to physically open a gate as part of a cut-through.
Otherwise I would suggest trying to make the drive contrast strongly with the pavement so there is a clear edge to your property. A low curb would be ideal, but at least a change in colour and texture e.g. from a tarmac pavement to brick drive.
Troyseph91@reddit
I suspect there is limited parking space, so both entrances are needed to avoid having one car stuck behind the other
royalblue1982@reddit
I agree that a different colour is going to be the best option that causes you the least amount of hassle long term. It would create a psychological barrier to entering your property.
United_Common_1858@reddit

ClingerOn@reddit
Exactly. These people know what they’re doing. The fact they’re squeezing between the cars means they don’t care.
What-problem@reddit
Yes, I agree.
We had personal experience with this. Our last house was on a corner and it was a nightmare with people walking across it, driving across it, even walking their dogs over it and allowing them to shit in our flower borders. It was very obviously a private garden and we tried numerous things to stop it, including making it a distinctive driveway, putting hedging all around it and putting large rocks around it. People just continued to walk over it, let dogs shit over it and kids scoot on it, and destroyed our hedging.
Sorry OP. We couldn't put up a wall or fence because it would have blocked eye lines for drivers. We were glad when we moved.
d3montree@reddit
Clever idea, of all the ways to physically block the trespassers this would probably cause the least inconvenience to op .
TheDevilsButtNuggets@reddit

The only real way is gates.
There are other ways to discourage people.
A simple chain hung across is often enough to stop people walking through (people won't step over.
Make it look more "private" ,put up signs, plant flower beds etc. again people are reluctant to walk in private areas so make it look private.
cassandra112@reddit
Chain might work. but, likely only if its attached to a brick wall, or iron fence itself.
If its just a chain across the pavement, attached to a post.. they will just go around the post. Trampling any hedge/greenery in the way. (maybe if its a very well established and thick hedge.)
Smoke-me_a-kipper@reddit
I like the chain idea, would need a camera up though because there'll be at least 1 person a month decking it face first.
Paulstan67@reddit
Just something like this (a different sign obviously)
tigbird007@reddit
I think this is the best and probably cheapest idea, strung between two plants in pots if there’s room. Do you park cars dead straight, is it possible to park them at an angle to make it a little awkward for people to walk through?
I do sympathise, we have a driveway that holds 3 cars to the left of our house and there’s a school not far from us. We’ve had to put traffic cones onto it to stop people parking there when dropping and picking up their kids. There’s signs and it’s very clear it’s parking for our house and people still park there. I’d never dream of doing this and it’s so lazy, to save themselves from walking a few hundred yards.
Smoke-me_a-kipper@reddit
Oh, for insurance reasons...
I was thinking more on the lines that it would just be funny to watch back. But you're absolutely right, cover your back first, laugh at them later.
Smeeble09@reddit
Had the same thought.
Didn't think you'd need a sign for your own private driveway that isn't part of a business or right of way, mad that you might need one.
Paulstan67@reddit
You need the sign.
It's just an extra deterrent. It won't deter everyone but plenty of people blindly follow signs just like this...think "keep off the grass" signs. 95% of the time it works.
Smeeble09@reddit
I meant a sign to free op of any liability, not as a deterrent.
Paulstan67@reddit
Oh yes I misunderstood.
No you shouldn't need one
Sadly in this day and age where people claim against anyone for anything...
CommercialPug@reddit
The only law that springs to mind is the one that prevents you from laying traps even on your property. For example, you can't rig a shotgun to a tripwire to shoot someone who is trespassing in your house.
Some numpty could claim you set the chain too low to purposely trip them up I guess. Not that I think any judge or police officer would take them seriously

An archway or pergola over the entrances would help to denote privacy. Unless you drive a Chelsea Tractor could have it low so you can drive underneath but pedestrians using the desire line get smacked in the face. Also you could have a vine or other plants hanging down so they’re in the face of pedestrians. And some fake spider web. Additional tubs with plants that you can move around to block the direct route so it becomes less obvious/ less desirable.

I just scrolled through the responses to make sure my suggestion hasn’t already been made - but do forgive me if it has and I missed it! You asked for a solution that wouldn’t come across as “annoying”, which would still put people off from walking through. If I was you, I would purchase some tall plants in long, movable, low planters (e.g. something like this , or the ones shown here. Then place them between where you and your partner each park your cars. This will create a psychological barrier that people won’t want to walk through, while also still being visually appealing and saving you the hassle of adding gates (which isn’t just expensive, but also annoying on an everyday basis, as you’ll have to get in and out of your car every time you leave/arrive to open and shut the gates behind you). You can also pick plants & planters that are low enough not to rise above your level of vision when looking out of the house - generally, as long as they’ll roughly reach the height of your car windows, 99% of people won’t bother clambering through the gap between the planters. They’ll arrive at the corner, see that the “shortcut” involves much more effort, and will instinctively follow the “normal” route. And because it’s an unconscious psychological barrier, chances are that people won’t even notice that’s what you put them there for! So you won’t be perceived as annoying. The added bonus is of course that this option can become an aesthetic upgrade to your front drive and view into the house as well! You can choose planters and plants that go with the rest. Also: lots of planters come on lockable wheels, so if you ever need to move them, you totally can. But the planters & plants are usually big enough that passers-by won’t bother (or dare) to do this when walking past your house. Hope this helps! All the best!
PS if you do end up doing this, I’d love to see photos of the outcome!

Put a gate on the north exit, and a fence on the west side to the pavement.
Car a needs to leave for work, they open the gate and exit. Pedestrians will still not choose the cut through as car b is in the way. Car b needs to leave for work, they close the gate and leave via south exit. No pedestrian cut through.
Car a gets home earlier than car b? Enters via south exit. Car b then does the same. Gate stays closed.
Car b gets home earlier than car a? Enters via south exit and opens gate. Still no pedestrian cut through but car a can enter via north exit without blocking in or needing car b to move.

For vehicles, park in such a way that a car cannot pass. If you have two vehicles, position them so rash one may use a different entrance. For pedestrians, try a polite sign to start - This is our home so please respect our privacy by not using our drive as a footpath. Last resort, install a CCTV camera, or even just a fake one, and let people know that they are being filmed. I feel really cross about this, and it’s not even my problem. Good luck.

Split the driveway into two. Build a short fence, T'd off (90° to) the existing fence to the house. One of your driveways you'll only be able to enter from the one way street, the other you'll only be able to enter from the main road, but at least people and cars won't use it as a thoroughfare. You could even put a gate in it so YOU can use it as a thoroughfare when you choose.

If you don’t mind losing the ability to drive through, you could build a wall, or place a flowerbed between the parking spaces of the respective cars. One of the drivers may end up with a longer walk, but it would ruin the cut through with out needing a gate.
Another option would be to widen the driveway on the main road and build the wall on the one way road.

Put a fence across the middle, one car parks on one side of it, the other car parks on the other side. You can have a latched small gate on the side next to the house to get to either car. I’m a garden designer, there’s a thing called defensive planting to (mainly) stop people cutting corners when it comes to flower beds. The catch all is spiky things, or big tough lumpy things; the nuanced option , for the right crowd, is something so beautiful people won’t stand on it, or an arch of some sort so people will or won’t go through it depending on whether it feels like an entrance they should use or shouldn’t use. the other option is a hedge of some form. Thinking about the last one, you could have something soft fronds and wavy so you can drive through it without harming your car, but it’s a bit annoying to walk through.

Buy some chunky chain and carabiners from a DIY store and hang it across both entrances at a height that is inconvenient to both step over and duck under. You used to be able to get decorative chain with spikes/diamonds in which although harmless looked a bit more intimidating to anyone thinking of going over/under. It can easily be unclipped to get your cars in and out or for slightly more security attach it with combination padlocks.
Another trick is to get an enormous bone, a chunky dog chain and a huge dog food bowl with a name like "killer" or "world's cutest XL bully" written on it and leave it in your drive!

I don't think you need much - probably some 'clues' to indicate private property.
I would suggest a strip made of large pebbles ( you have probably seem them around) that you can easily drive over, but are uncomfortable to walk on. This would give visual, physical, and tactile 'clues' to pedestrians to keep on the other side.
If they really wanted to cross, they could, of course, but mostly people dot think about it.
EmmaInFrance@reddit
If OP really wants to keep both openings completely barrier free - and I can understand that, as the roads may be too busy to allow OP and others to stop to open/close a chain or gate, or lower/raise a bollard - then discouragement tactics are the only remaining option.
I think creating a pebble strip at each opening is a really good idea - a bit like giant Lego blocks set in the ground! - and perhaps neater than trying to put down loose gravel.
I would also suggest adding thorny or just obtrusive planting wherever possible next to the openings and along that long edge, where people like to squeeze between it and OP's cars.
OP needs to take a trip to the garden centre this weekend, just to wander around and look for sources of inspiration. They should look at different types of paving, stones, pebbles and boulders, but also different types of hedging and shrubs.
The plants don't have to be thorny, they could just be sticky, or fluffy, or fuzzy - something that's just a pain in the arse to get too close to!
Perhaps something that's a great pollinator, so it will be covered with bees in spring and summer, and so deter anyone from getting to close? There's some really beautiful pollinator plants.
I also suggest that OP and their partner could simply just change up their parking habits for about a month, maybe 6 weeks, and maybe reposition their cars so that they block the way more, if possible?
It may be less convenient for them temporarily but they will also be inconveniencing the people who use their drive as a shortcut, hopefully forcing them to use the pavement.
4-6 weeks should be long enough for the repeat offenders to break the habit and form a new one.
'They' say that it takes three weeks to form a new habit.
As someone with AuDHD, I'm not 100% convinced! :-D
But even for someone like le, that should be enough for most people.
And depending on just how many people are doing this, I would also just try talking to them - use some common sense though on who you try this with!
If OP knows their neighbours, OP could chat to them about how it's bothering them and then let that info cascade outwards through the local gossip network. Hopefully, slowly, the better part of the locals will start remembering not to take a shortcut through OP's drive.

Line of something like potted plants to block visibility between the two exits and how "obvious" any shortcut might be.
Is your drive obviously distinct from being just more pavement? A surface change to gravel (or pavings/paint) etc could help denote it as someone's drive.
Plastic chains. But the you need to put them back.
Place something ( potted plants or bins) on the edges of the openings. At the moment a pedestrian blindly turning the corner would end up in your drive without even realiseing it potentially. Delaying that turn for a step or two gives a second the realise.
Bubbly_Inspection270@reddit
Get remote controlled gates for each end, that are at least 1.8m high. Have your front fence built from brick, to the same height. This will give all of it a feeling of a solid barrier.
A chain is too easy to step over.
Keep your gates shut.
Yes, it'll be expensive, but at least this will be a permanent solution and end the nonsense.
Alternatively, block off one end, and have a 1.8m brick fence across, again so that it's too high to step over.

Easiest solution is to go to your local farming supplies shop.
You need 4 circular hooks, 4 gate handles and a roll of tape for electric fencing. No battery.
You get someone to attach the hooks onto the wall at the beginning of the arrows on your diagram (non pointy end). Make them about 3ft up, stomach height.
You measure the width of the driveway on each entry and cut 2 inches of tape shorter than that.
You tie the tape to the electric fence handle and hook it over the circular hook. You tie the other end to the opposing circular hook.
Now you have a "gate" that will deter people from entering without the space consumption of a proper gate. If needed you can get some plastic mesh from any garden centre and weave the electric fence tape through that to make a larger visual barrier that goes down to the ground.

I like the idea of a chain, the motion detecting sprinklers are also a good option. Maybe a Ring camera (or similar) that says “You Are Trespassing! this is a private drive!” When it detects motion. That’s so annoying. My mom had a similar thing. She’s a bit more rural in a neighborhood but people cut across her driveway to walk their dogs and it drives her dog nuts cuz she can see them and it sets off her Ring motion sensor. She put up a cone with a sign attached to a stick that says “private drive”. It helped a bit.

I can tell you to not bother with any signs, used to live in a town centre ex-office building, and people would casually just use our drive and parking spaces, sometimes blocking us in, and if challenged and I pointed at all of the many private residential property no parking signs would just mutter "I thought it would be fine" or something equally lame. Some even had the cheek to say that they were empty spaces, so why I was being difficult, but never had a reply when I asked if that meant it was fine to park on their drive without asking. In the end, though it was a pain, got a chain to put across the opening.

Dans77b@reddit
My friend lived in an old shop with parking spaces out front. They got equally frustrated when a car would park there (thinking it was a closed shop).
They installed folding bollards and had to go through the rigmarole of putting them up and down every morning and night. Then one day they forgot, and drive into one of the bollards cracking the bumper on their brand new car.
Sometimes an occasional major inconvenience is better than a regular minor inconvenience.

I had a similar thing where a storm pulled a fence down, between the time of getting someone in and the finances to fix it, people decided they'd walk across my flower border and over my drive to access the pavement. I won't get into the specifics as it's boring a needs a diagram to explain, but effectively people will do whatever they want unless you make it near impossible to do so.
I'd preferred to have a half height fence for seeing the cars approaching on the main road, but if I had people would have vaulted over it, so I had to go full height.

Easiest solution is to just angle the way you park so there's not an easy way to walk through without having to dry hump a car. Park the one on the major road so as to block people. Strategically place a planter or two in there to close off the space a bit more. If the planter has a nice thorny rose all the better.
People will waltz through a meter+ wide gap, but if you make it slightly more awkward than going the proper way they'll go the path of least resistance.

United_Common_1858@reddit
Joking aside, it's worth evaluating all of the responses you get here with the idea of Elephant Paths in mind. The architectural term is desire path. In short, absolutely nothing will stop a pedestrian taking an easier route that is available to them. Nothing. No signage, no disincentive, nothing. A pedestrian will ignore a path is mere centimetres away.
Your only option is to block off access to the route through an obstruction such as a fence. It does not need to be anything significant, it can be as small as a knee-high chain that looks decorative.
Have you ever wondered why pedestrian crossings are at roundabouts? As a driver you often come off a roundabout into a red light and it can cause traffic obstructions on the roundabout itself.
It's because pedestrians will not walk even an extra 20 metres further from a potential crossing point. The crossings are placed where pedestrians will use them not where it makes the most sense for traffic. If the crossing was placed further down the road the pedestrians will ignore it completely and cross without traffic lights.
Desire paths are a real thing and the link can give you some informed ideas. There is even a subreddit dedicated to documenting them over time.
https://www.reddit.com/r/DesirePaths/

I had a very similar scenario at my old house, knee high wall people just hopped and walked across my plants and grass. Problem is people don't care and will do what is most convenient for themselves even when asked, so you have to make them by making it inconvenient. I planted some thorn bushes and set a sprinkler on a sensor, solved the problem pretty quickly. It was hilarious when the thorn bushes were still low enough to hop, so people would and then enter my trap. Maybe put a locked gate on the side you use the least at the minimum, so there isn't a way through and they have to go around.

Simple answer is, there's nothing you can do unless you are prepared to get a gate, although it's your property and people lawfully aren't allowed on there without some sort of permission, they will. It's a natural instinct. That being said, if it were me I wouldn't be that bothered, unless I was there when they did it, I'd say "do you mind, this is my drive" other than that, get a gate or leave it be. Sorry to be blunt.

I had a similar problem with cyclists, and planted trees and shrubs
A day later one of the trees ended up in a neighbhors garden thanks to one of the cyclist who complained I had blocked her right of way.
Her right of way is my front garden and drive.
The only way I found was to make the route as unpalitable as possible with planting and planters.
caniuserealname@reddit
The only real way to do so would be close off one of the ends of the driveway.
If you insist both sides need to be open to allow you both to park off street, then a semipermanent barrier like a gate would be necessary.
Anything short of that would have almost no impact.

There are a few ways: - Park your cars in ways that other cars can’t get past (if the space is tight enough) - Put up signs warning against driving through - Put something in the way, like a garden statue or something similar so that another car would have to physically drive through it - Install some electric gates on at least one of the sides (the more expensive option but the most effective one)

Is there a fence or wall between your driveway and the main road, where you've drawn a black line, or is it just a paved area right up to the pavement?
If there's no fence I can imagine people cutting the corner. If there is a fence, then it must seem like a commercial premises, rather than a private property. If you don't want to put gates on one of the entrances, can you make the whole area seem more like a front garden, rather than just a driveway? People will be less likely to cut through if it is obviously a private front garden.
But really the best answer is a gate on the side road. Keep it closed except when trying to drive in (obviously!).

You could probably achieve a lot with a clear visible distinction between your property and the street. Chain across one gap. Not too droopy so that people are not inclined just to step over it. Just a bit of a pain to have to put it up and down.
Otherwise aim to park your two cars as far away from the house side as possible - people less likely to cut through if close to the house? Also they'll be less close to the cars if they do choose to do so.
Some form of motion detectors linked to a speaker ... makes an announcement that this is private property. However you don't want it to be tripped by people correctly using the pavement outside so may be difficult.
It happens to us too as we are on a corner ... however we only have one car and it's garaged so not so stressful.

Cheap option is to put a rope/chain across one entrance, (or even across the middle if you fancy getting one of those temporary bollards). You only need to block one end to make it inconvenient and it should only need to be a temporary measure as once people get used to not being able to cut through they'll mostly stop.
If you have a child available (either your own or you can rent/borrow one from somewhere) then give them a super-soaker and tell them anyone who steps over the line is fair game. If you want to automate the process then you could go for a motion activated sprinkler.
If it remains a consistent problem then you could go with a sliding/roller gate along the wall, but that seems like an expensive option.

Are there any clear boundary markings on the ground? For example, some kind of concrete trim or line that indicates that this is a separate space? Or is it just one continuous tarmac surface?
If it's the latter, it might play some part on a subconscious level where people don't really think about the fact that they're breaching a boundary.
Whereas if you had some clear markings that require people to mentally 'cross a threshold' that might be enough to deter them.
Just a possible cheap and simple solution that doesn't involve erecting actual boundaries, just perceived boundaries, so it's still easy to get your cars in and out.

Could you extend your front fence around the corner slightly? Just enough to block the "shortcut". If you can put it on hinges you could open it up when driving out and close it back up once you're parked again.
Or failing that, I was thinking something like those raising arm barriers you get at car parks. But made of wood and hinged in the middle so folds in on itself and stays up against the wall in a bracket when not in use. Would also need a post for it to sit on at the other end when its laid out. Rocks, large rocks. Seen an IG page of some one doing this called rock cam, captured video of people driving over the large rock at the end of his drive. Rather funny actually.

I’d go with some bollards, or if you don’t want to be digging holes etc get some big planters

get some bollards that lower in to the ground, or perhaps a nice gate that retracts in to the wall on both side?

at either entrance: two posts about a metre high at either side with a chain strung between them. simply unlatch the chain whenever you enter or leave and re attach it right afterwards

Remote controlled electric gate on the exit onto main road - this will block off the cut-through. It would be remote control to open / close and retract behind your front wall. Make it a tall-ish one so people can see it before trying to walk through, or they’ll just try to jump over it.
Looks like you don’t have land to fit one on the one-way road side, otherwise that’s also an option; even if you did, you don’t really need two gates, though it looks better.
Cheaper option would be a manual opening gate on the one-way road side, but you’ll need to spot your car to open - a pain and a car-jacking risk (unless you switch off engine) each time. You could always have this as a back up

A chain is probably the route here.
The alternative is to make it seem a bit more... domestic? This is kinda an unusual setup and I'd guess they think they're walking through the forecourt of a shop. Plants, gravel driveway, that sort of thing might convey the message a bit better.

GoldenGolgis@reddit
Could you put some sort of temporary fencing across the middle of your drive? So people can't walk all the way through and only realise when they are halfway & have to turn back?
Thinking of those big orange/yellow plastic things that you see on pavements when they want to divert pedestrians away from roadworks etc.
Or just put a permanent fence or hedge across and treat it as two driveways (ooh, fancy!) I guess it depends how useful it is to you to have it as one continuous drive.

A gate on the side entering the one way street
I imagine you’ll likely use the main road to enter more often?
Have a closed gate on the one way side, which you conveniently open when you wish to drive out, perhaps only closing when you drive in and park.

Get a motion activated sprinkler system. You can buy them online for like $75US. I use them to deter deer from my garden and they work well.
Dr-Moth@reddit
If you block the top end completely with your car or some "garden delivery" a couple of times, it'll catch some people when they try to cut through and they'll have to double back. Next time they'll be less likely to cut through because they learned that it doesn't always save them time.
Equally, something between your cars that means they have to snake around towards your front door, rather than taking a straight line will make the shortcut longer and put them off
No-one_here_cares@reddit
I want to say remote control gates so you don't have to get out the car when you want to park, but if someone has already parked then you don't want their car in the way of the gate opening which constrains how much useable drive space you have. Unless you get one gate facing the main road but it slides back and forth rather than swings.
One gate should be enough to deter most people.
