Car goes into limp mode during stop and go traffic?

Posted by eyesonkazuhira@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 19 comments

Realistic_Complex539@reddit

Very unlikely for an O2 sensor to cause a car to go into limp mode. Possible if its the upstream messing up the air/fuel ratio, but it would probably be constant and not just stop/go traffic. They didnt tell you what transmission codes you have, like overheating? Are you able to check your CVT fluid yourself? Any slipping that you notice? Unfortunately, CVTs are not known to be reliable, and its entirely possible that its simply going out.

I highly doubt it, the oldest vehicle i have ever seen in active duty was an old 5 ton expando van from the 70s. It was towed around everywhere because they needed it as a command shelter.

My issue isnt exactly with body lifts, I used them in the past when my issue fitting bigger tires with the amount of travel I had was the body. Suspension spacer lifts dont really do anything for your suspension, unless youre pairing them with expensive parts like new control arms or coils/shocks. Done perfectly right, which nobody does, a spacer lift can be paired with adjustable coilovers and longer travel tie rods, control arms, and CV axles on trail rigs to increase downtravel while keeping a small lift. But, without extra parts, youre just fucking the suspension geometry and having a worse ride with the same suspension.

I say low compression for those who dont want to get into the specifics of valve timing. Yes, a vehicle with 11:1 compression will need timing to be adjusted in order to run regular reliably. My trailblazer(11:1) an tacoma(11.8:1) both could retard or advance timing to prevent knock. On vehicles with higher compression and VVT, you CAN run premium for marginal gains that frankly arent worth the cost. Forced induction vehicles generally call for plus or premium since youre cramming more shit into the cylinder, which can cause knock without higher octane rated fuel.

Fuzzy wheel covers can be dangerous, they get in the way and can slip. Im not really talking about the ones with a 5 o' clock shadow, im talking about the un-tamed bust that Christine has in her Prius. I used to pump gas for a living, I have put premium in several stock cars where the fuel door clearly says "E87" because the customer asked. I also work with several people who get in arguments with me because I tell them that their stock v8 silverado does not need premium because its "better fuel."

I have a few. "Cold" air intake which is just an open cone filter in the engine bay. Any lifted truck with either spacer lifts or crossmember lifts. Premium fuel in a stock, non-turbo, low compression vehicle. Premium does not mean better. Fuzzy steering wheel cover. "Aero" mods. Anything that blocks the grill.

Im not European, but i grew up in New Jersey which is like a different country compared to a lot of Texas. I enjoy it, has decent food, a lot to explore, and some really good state parks. What I hate is all of the private land, there isnt much for public use.

How many times have you been pulled over?

Realistic_Complex539@reddit

4. First time was after putting a snorkel on my Jetta, floored it coming out of a turn and MP pulled me over. It was a 2.0, snorkel was loud as fuck but the car was slow, so I never made it over the speed limit by the time I saw the lights. Got a warning. Second time I was actually speeding in a Chevy Trailblazer. Empty road, state trooper pulled me over. I was apparently doing 20 over and had to go to court, got it reduced to improper use of equipment instead of points on my license. Third time was because I had my front plate in my windshield instead of on my front bumper. Got a warning and wound up bolting it to my bumper. Last time was just past Dallas going towards Austin. Going about 85 and following traffics speed, but got singled out of like 20 cars going the same speed. Im still mad about that one

Are there any practical downsides/dangers to a body lift?

Posted by Own_Kaleidoscope5512@reddit | overlanding | View on Reddit | 18 comments

Realistic_Complex539@reddit

I have a 1/2 inch body lift on my Tacoma to clear the transfer case for my 4x4 swap a bit better. Had a 2 inch body lift on a Trailblazer so I could fit 33s without trimming much while keeping decent suspension geometry. At the end of the day, its up to you and what you need your rig to do, the downsides are what you make them. In my Trailblazers case, I needed bigger tires for the ground clearance while also raising the body/intake 2 inches so it could ford a bit more water. Yes, my center of gravity was higher but its the same with a suspension lift, without the added benefit of more frame clearance between the ground.

Seeking Big Bend Suggestions

I was able to do every trail in 2wd just before the flood hit in July, ground clearance helped. Favorite drives, in order from best to less best are :Old Ore Road, River Road East/West, Black Gap Road, Old Maverick Road, then Dagger Flat Road. Bring fuel. Dog Canyon was pretty neat, just a boring hike trying to get to the cool stuff. There was water in the way of the trail so I had to do some climbing. Boquillas Canyon trail was alright, didnt really know where the trail ended so I walked A LOT. In addition, most of the trails that were near the Rio Grande will probably have trinkets laying around to buy. Its an honor system where you deposit money without a cashier, bring cash if you plan on buying stuff. Lost Mine Trail had great views, a bit of a climb. I would have done more hiking, but I was with my father so couldn't really go too hard.

Very uncommon unless you are military. McGuire AFB has one, but you need a military/veteran ID to use it. Do you live in an apartment? I live in a 10×15 barracks room and I'm able to keep tools to do mostly anything either in my closet or my car

I have a 3rd gen Tacoma crew cab with no rear seats. Im a mechanic, right now I'm working on one of our vehicles at a site about 1 mile away from my normal shop, so I've been shuttling parts and storing them in the truck. Right about now I've got about $50,000 worth of parts and 300lbs worth of tools sitting in there waiting for tomorrow. Good parts and tools go in the cab, broken/bad shit in the bed. Outside of work, it carries overlanding equipment.

Should I look for 0W16 oil or 5W30 is good enough?

Posted by ligonsk@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 27 comments

Realistic_Complex539@reddit

5w30 doesn't "flow" as good, it's a thicker oil, heavier weight. I can't say for certain but it might have done some damage, or everything could still be perfect, some things just work like that. 0w16 is super thin, with modern engines and their tighter tolerances, thinner oils are needed to flow through passages right. Just make sure your future oil changes are done right, the way your manual says.

Maybe try to find a way to pull the fuel pump relay/fuse either while driving or running. The car will run for a bit until it uses up the fuel from the lines, acting as if you ran out of fuel. At which point you take her to walk to the gas station, proposing as you kneel to fill up the fuel can
