Did you cry when you lost a car you loved so much?

Rather it be you had to sell it or you lost it in a wreck, I just wanted to see if anyone else felt the same emotions I did towards cars , I hate the thought of losing my bronco
New-Job1761@reddit
No, but I wanted to. My daughter rolled my fully loaded 86 Grand Wagoneer Jeep totaling it.

I sold a very well kept, bone stock, low mileage, 93 MR2 in 2016. As the buyer drove it out of the parking lot the stock exhaust sounded so good on deceleration that I had to ask my wife “did it always sound that good from outside the car”? She said “yeah I thought you did that on purpose all the time. I always felt so cool when you picked me up from somewhere with the t-tops out”. A single tear rolled down my cheek and I started shopping for another silly two seater that same day.
FirehawkLS1@reddit
I felt that way when I sold my 87 MR2 and my 85 Celica Supra.

My first car got totaled back in 1999 when I was 18. 1988 Ford Thunderbird. Yeah it was tearful for me. I've always wanted another fox body Thunderbird, but I did replace it with a 1989 Thunderbird, and then later on, a 1997 Thunderbird that I did a lot of modifications to.

My 03 TL TypeS. I had wheels, JDM grille and badging, blacked out the headlights myself, coilovers, RSB, upgraded brakes, phenolic spacers and headers. First car I had that was paid off. Totaled. I wasn't the one driving.
RVtech101@reddit
Not so much a car, but a motorcycle. The crying could have also been attributed to my shattered leg. I still miss that bike!
OkBackground6217@reddit (OP)
Glad you’re still alive tho! How are you feeling today?
RVtech101@reddit
Great, but this happened almost 40years ago. A couple years later I wrecked on a dirtbike, same leg broken and had to crawl 3 miles to a road. That was unfun.
WikipediaBurntSienna@reddit
I really, really, really regretted letting go of my 01 IS300
diegoaccord@reddit
No.
But if someone hits my GT-R, they will be the one crying.

Chevy Trailblazer, hundreds of hours building it to be gone in a second

No. I lose tools in my garage all the time…and a car is just a bigger, more expensive tool.

The closest I ever got was when I sold my WRX. I loved that bugeye
Buffrider-52@reddit
My dad bought a 1961 Austin Healey Sprite for cheap. He got it running great, and it only had one minor dent. He wanted to give it to me to drive to high school. My mother vetoed the idea wanting my surrounded be a large car. I was very disappointed. Surprisingly, my first car was a ‘58 Triumph TR3 with that my uncle gave me for Christmas. My mother wasn’t happy about that.

Yeah I sold my nc1 Miata and cried a river. Just kidding, I’m never selling it.
Advanced-Fox380@reddit
selling my 12 yo Prius (for a deal I could not resist). It had satellite radio, and as I was cleaning it out, one of my favorite ‘80s songs came on and I started crying. Will always miss my teal tin can 😭
xtracrispy26@reddit
The 1994 GMC Sonoma I had with 400k miles. I learned that you need to check your fluid levels that day. 16 year old me didn’t change the oil or check the tranny fluid the whole time I had it.
SubstantialKick2452@reddit
I didn't cry, but I was really depressed when I sold my old 1999 Toyota Camry to an auto wrecker 5 years ago. It was the pandemic when things were already crap to begin with, and then someone stole the catalytic converter off of the car. It was a 22 year old car by that point with 187,000 miles on it, and with the car no longer able to pass inspection I just decided to let it go.

83 Saab 900 gave it's life to save my wife and baby in a black ice accident, yeah I cried
Many-Pomegranate-33@reddit
Had a car I bought almost brand new.
To me it was great.
11 Malibu. Dark red with chrome look 5 spoke wheels and sunroof. Tan interior.
Great small sporty car with great gas mileage and mostly easy to work on, on my own.
It got totalled when parked in front of my house by an underage DUI hit and run.
It was parked and got pushed 3/4 car length from where it was parked.
After that I feel DUI hit and run should be auto revoke license time.

My 92 Caprice. Fuck I loved that old girl
Medium-Pay-9057@reddit
I had a ‘98 civic ex coupe that I saved up over the summer for. It was my first car and I had it for about five months and it got stolen. It was found a couple days later after the stereo, sub and some other parts were stolen out of it. The people that stole it were doing donuts in it, hit a curb with the rear tire and bent the sub frame. My brother parted it out and when the shell got towed away, I just thought “Well that ends that chapter”
I was more sad when it got found than when it was stolen. I ended up getting an EP3 two months later which was awesome.

I will be absolutely destroyed if anything happened to my early 2000's 4runner. I never thought my favorite, best overall vehicle would be something that wasn't a truck. A friend convinced me to buy it 13 years ago. I don't wasn't anything to happen to it. I love that car.
FontainePark@reddit
I tore up my Blazer from a combination of snow and a bad alignment that occurred just the day before. I don't know where I felt sadder. That moment or now that I've been car-less for four months. Only blessings were no one got hurt and I got it off the road before I could get a ticket.
TurkishSwag@reddit
Was really sad to let go of my E46 M3. Was even sadder when I found out the moron who got it totaled it drifting in the snow (in an empty parking lot), 3 months later.
Magneto-Mark-1@reddit
That’s a crime against humanity.
TurkishSwag@reddit
Yep, this was back when prices were low and dumbass 20 year olds could get them. I was around the same age as him, but didn’t put so much as a ding on the thing in 3 years.
Unable_Answer_179@reddit
Absolutely. When my 96 Honda DelSol died last fall after 29 years of faithful service I genuinely experienced grief and tears.

77 jimmy, yep weeped and didn’t even want to drive again. Refused to for quite a while and didn’t want to get another vehicle. But had to eventually.

92 300ZX twin turbo. I got teary eyed when the buyer drove off. Replaced it with a C5 Z06 so I got over it quick. 😄
zyarelol@reddit
I actually cried when i lost my 09 malibu. It was falling apart, i bought it at 200K, and shepharded it to 300k before the headgasket blew and had too much oil leaking to be worth fixing.
coyoteatemyhomework@reddit
Never thought i would hear of anyone being upset over an 09 Malibu. Lol
coyoteatemyhomework@reddit
My buddy did more than cry! He tried suing his family! He lost his father/ son project car in a garage fire the night after it came home from the paint shop. (66 Beaumont SD) was ready to be assembled. If losing the car wasnt enough his dad got a huge insurance payout for the garage and tools, contents, etc ... but the car wasn't covered under household insurance and my buddy never got a dime from his parents!
BackgroundGrass429@reddit
My 66 mustang. Got rear ended. Yes, I cried over that car.
Herpty_Derp95@reddit
My stepdad had a 76 Mustang. It caught on fire at a gas station. It is one of my first memories because it was a big event! I don't remember him crying, but he really enjoyed that car.
Years later he bought another one and put an engine and transmission in it.

My 1989 Mustang GT convertible. Sold it to pay for school. I bought it for $18k new in ‘89. They are now at $60k.
OkBackground6217@reddit (OP)
A base GT now with no options is $48k and a fully loaded one is $70k…..
the_real_MBAPROF@reddit
I was close…saw one on a dealer lot in Detroit modestly equipped for $68 and change.
OkBackground6217@reddit (OP)
I found a base GT 10 speed for $45k but I don’t pull the trigger because you can get a slightly used S550 Mach 1s for 45-50k so right now I’m searching a bunch of different ones
Magneto-Mark-1@reddit
1991 Mitsubishi Eclipse 5 speed. Red on black, pop up headlights. Used to run the hell outta that car. Ended up nuking the engine. I’m on the Internet once a month looking for another one. I LOVED that car.
LomentMomentum@reddit
Didn’t cry, but was a little melancholy when I surrendered both Honda Civics I once owned. Not because the cars were that special, but because of many years of life experiences I had with them.
HighGroundIsOP@reddit
Yea, there was a car that I had in college/grad school/all my 20s that I loved and was there for some of the best memory making of my life.
It basically died and was replaced it with a better newer version, but that one never had the same place in my heart. There is nothing to regret because it had to go, but do think about it nostalgically, in a good old days sort of way.
Ok_Two_2604@reddit
Only car, motorcycle, or boat I’ve ever really regretted selling and wanted back was an Evo 9. I bought an STI years later but it just didn’t have the same feel. Been looking off and on for a clean one for a decade but the good ones are all stupid expensive.
Rough_Cancel7265@reddit
Most car guys share your mindset, I however do not. I like the cars I've had in the past, but there are so many out there to experience still. If I lost my car now it would kind of suck in the moment, but I also have three or four lined up for when I get rid of it anyways.
Monster51915@reddit
Yes, it was my 2006 Subaru forester. It was my first car and it was a high mileage beater abused by the past owner with some issues but it was still such a cool vehicle that I love and I really loved it because it was a smaller station wagon which is a vehicle class which I love and we lack them in the USA. We were moving cross country so I couldn’t keep it. It’d be a long drive since I was newer to driving and it started to have issues right before the move. It was a move from ID to WV and I did really miss it and it was sad but I did get a 2024 Crosstrek sport once we got to the new state and settled in a bit.
It was a great vehicle though and it was a fun off-roader
Fragrant_Bathroom283@reddit
Yep, I broke down on the side of the road… First car which I actually bought myself. Owned it from 43-107k miles and almost 7 years! 2014 bmw 335i.
I quickly forgot about that when insurance paid me out $4k more than I paid for the car at 43k miles…
Paid $20,700 off the lot in 2018, got a check from insurance for almost 25k in 2024.
ButchDeanCA@reddit
Currently an AMG owner but miss my old Focus, that car carried me through some challenging times in my life without any complaints. I gave it to good will when the transmission failed - kept it for a while afterwards as I looked at options to hold on to it. It just wasn’t economically viable anymore.
I took pictures and movies of my last day with her and said goodbye. I still well up thinking about it. I totally understand where you’re coming from.
Wolfsburg78@reddit
I miss cars I sold too early, but have never gotten emotional over it.
My wife on the other hand... yeah. Some people get very attached to cars and the memories attached to them. Dropping her New Beetle off at Carmax for the check when it was too much to repair was rough.

I was in the street screaming bloody murder when I got hit and ran in my vintage Crown Victoria. I still miss a Lincoln MKZ I had over 6 years ago.
